- I've been meaning to film this video for a while. I've been super busy riding MTB recently and making videos, but this one is super important for you people to learn what works for you if you want to start working with brands from your sport. Comment if you have any questions and I'll film another video like this soon!
But in all honesty, this was the best how to get sponsored video I've seen. Your tips really did make sense.

As someone who works within the sponsorship industry, your comments are spot on. It is totally about what you offer and how you can help brands achieve their objectives. Never fall in to the trap of telling a brand what they can do to help you i.e i need money, i need stuff. Class comments pal

Hey Matt, thanks for this video. I have only been mountain biking for around 6 months, but I wanted to try to get sponsored. I reached out to a pedal brand and I asked if I can do a video on their pedals. They said of course, I didn’t ask for anything free but after I made the video they decided to send me some free pedals! Thank you so much!

Tip for younger riders, don’t worry about those small brand sponsorships and wait until you really feel like you’re up there with your riding, and keep in mind that local bike shops are the most attainable and easily the best sponsors

How the hell was 'helicopter blades' the first thing that came to your head
This video could not have come at a better time for me personally. I watched this Saturday and it motivated me like crazy. I've been off the bike (i am indeed a roadie lol) since sept 26 when I had knee surgery #2 of my life. Well that one was a failure and i just had knee surgery #3 on nov 14 and will be off the bike until sometime in January. I started contacting companies telling my story and telling them my unique idea for documenting and getting back into race shape. I'm currently in further talks with 3 of the companies and couldn't be happier. Just wanted to say thanks Matt! Cause honest to God without u making this video, i never would have had the ba**s to ask companies for support as I'm not that type of person to just randomly ask lol but i have a unique story/plan and was able to put value in my proposal for myself and the company as well. Keeping my fingers crossed as this would be an amazing, amazing opportunity. Thanks again!!!!

Plenty of genuinely useful advice in this vlog. Sponsorship is a two-way street, even if it seems a little lob-sided early on. Always keep the ego on the down-low with deals until you're "actually" a big cheese. Obviously being mindful of who's getting what out of any deal (you wouldn't ride Rampage just for a set of grips!).
I assume a "responsible adult" brokered the deal you got at age 12, and things grew from that? Local bike shops can be great at sponsoring local talent, even if it's just for race fees. As you say, it's a way in, and then you nurture it. You've obviously had good advice along the way Matt and want to pass it forward. Good on ya :)

I see I've come to the comment section 8 months late, behind the times as usual, but as others have said, this is the best how to get sponsored video I've ever watched, and I have rewatched this over and over as a recap over the months and am still trying to build up my master plan for sponsorship, and thanks to this I might even have a chance. Most riders when asked this question is just have fun on your bike, which I've come to realize is an amazing tip as people ride trying to ride like a pro when they aren't that good, and it takes the fun away, but just having fun really does help and makes you a better rider because your naturally progressing instead of forcing it whilst at the same time having fun; but they don't tell us how to actually come forward with companies and get that sponsorship, which this video does. Good job Matt and Marin and halo are lucky to have you on their side!
I think it's quite valuable that you're speaking about being sponsered. In my optinion it often seems a bit mysterious and hardly anybody understands what it's about. thanks dude, peace :-)

Thank you for this video very much. I think it's doable for me with my offroad race team. Its gonna take a lot of work and to turn a new corner with sponsoring would be everything. It's been 7 years I've been desert racing and 2 with my own car. This is a starting point for me unfortunately because I came to racing not knowing anyone. I've been really down because it's my dream and I know I'm good, but was considering giving it up because sponsors. I've raced in two utv world championships with not one handout from a company because I didn't know were to start. I really appreciate this post more then you even know. Thank you

Sponsorship relationships can start very small. I was at my LBS a couple of months ago and got a great deal on tubeless tires (and great service too). I asked for a couple of business cards, turns out they are stickers. There's one on the tool box I take to the dirt jump part. It's visible so if my box is out anyone can see the sticker. More returning the favor than real sponsorship, but both parties benefit, even if it's only a few bucks here and there. It's all about relationships. Say please and thank you, be polite. If I was half my age (still older than Matt) I'd continue to leverage the relationship with the bike shop beyond just spending plenty of money there. ;)

Really, a big factor, you have to be good. No one is interested in a rider than can’t at least top 10. You do have to be a talented rider.

And sometimes brands try to find ambassadors! Apply to them and thats good way to start! But allways guys dont be sell off! Try to get sponsors that has same values as you and you really belive in them and like their product

Great video. Although I'm sure these tips may work, something I have noticed with most sponsors is parents. For example I do all sorts of races and get podiums and all the racers around me, even the people I did better than, are sponsored in some way mainly due to their parents.
I find this quite unfair for riders like me that have a much lower chance of getting sponsored.
Hey Nathan. I know what you mean. It might seem like other riders are getting more support, but that's not always the case. Keep doing what you're doing. Talent is important and it sounds like you have lots of talent. So keep riding fast and getting videos of you smashing corners and hitting jumps :D
