In this Do It Yourself video tutorial series, I am explaining and demonstrating How To Paint Old Weathered Barn Fast using Zinsser Peel Stop Triple Thick Binding Primer and Top coating it with Sherwin Williams Rejuvenate and Sherwin Williams Duration Exterior Paint. I Prep the Barn first by pressure washing the surface with a gas powered MI-TM Work Pro 3000 PSI pressure washer. Pressure washing before painting is a chance to remove all dirt, debris, and cobwebs before priming and painting. It''s Important to wash your house or barn so that the new coat has the best chance to bond with the undercoat. by cleaning off all the gunk, we can make sure the paint goes on smoothly, not just rolling over dirt. I also pressure wash the concrete stairs. I show you how to sand down the peeling door casing and peeling areas on the barn. I use my Makita hand sander and a 5 in One tool to achieve this. I then Prime or Seal in the weathered surface with Zinsser Peel Stop Triple Thick Binding Primer. This High Build Primer/Sealer goes on easily with little to no surface friction, and preserves your paint brush from getting ruined or worn out. I apply the Zinsser Peel Stop Triple Thick Binding Primer with a 3 inch angled Corona Excaliber Chinex bristle paint brush.Home renovation. Home restoration

I made a comment, in jest of the dry paint snowstorm you were experiencing while sanding the jamb. BUT... Honestly and as usual, I learn so much from you by the end of your videos.
At 70 years old, I am often surprised when I learn something I haven't already known. Your instructive videos always show me that I have a lot left to learn. Thank you Russ.
Hello
Thank you for your sincerity! I also love to learn. What did you learn?
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow I learned that painting a top coat directly over a weathered/damaged surface is just asking for trouble in a short period of time. I am pretty good about prepping, interior wise, but I haven't done much outdoors painting and this was a great video for me. This video backed up your previous video about using a good quality primer sealer to make top coating smoother and easier and to save brushes.
Don
Hi Leston
What did you do wrong?
Russ
Yes ok! When you put down a primer like I did, it makes brushing in the paint really easy!
Just what I was looking for! Thank you!
Thanks! U have a similar job?
I’m def gonna pick this up - didn’t know you can tint it - nice tip
Hi
Great! Have the paint store tint it to whatever top coat color you choose! It glides over surface and provides a thick flexible membrane for top coat to stick too
Awesome content Russ!
Thanks Jack!
Hi Russ, I was looking for a way to remove peeling paint on our mailbox stand and paint the stand in the correct way. Your video has helped me to do a perfect job. Thank you.
Thank you Veronica!
Im using untinted peelstop (white) for my siding but am having trouble getting a nice thick coat with the roller. Even a freshly dipped roller only tints the paint underneath slightly white and it is pretty thick. It's almost like the peelstop is mostly clear but a little white tint. If I put on a 2nd coat then it starts to whiten the color. couldn't even get it very opaque with my brush on some trim, and i was trying to load it on thick.
Yes u are exactly right! You can apply peel stop with a wide brush and lay it off thicker. It won’t tint white opaque! Use a good covering top coat paint to help with this. The real beauty is applying the top coat over the peel stop. It just glides!
Perfect timing , Russ. It's time to paint my shed this year. It's not in too bad of shape, but I guess I'll prime with the Peel Stop. Looks like it seals those cracks very well. Thanks for the video.
Hi
Thank you! Let me know how you make out?
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow Sure will! Can you use Peel Stop on a painted deck then apply Deck Over or Arborcoat on top? A friend wants to repaint her deck. Thanks
Hello
Peel Stop is not recommended for
application to floors, decks, or surfaces subject to
immersion or prolonged contact with water, or for below
grade applications. It is not recommended for use on
polyethylene, polypropylene, Teflon, or nylon.
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow Thanks Russ. I'll pass on the information.

thank you for this video! very helpful!
Thanks Sandra!
I was told that peel bond was excessive for most exteriors. I told a client that I wanted to put a coat of this on before putting two coats on her exterior wood trim. Began having second thoughts about recommending this to her since she’ll have to pay for both the labor and materials for that second coat. The trim I quoted for was in not too bad of condition.
Hi Chris
You can’t go wrong with this primer. It’s thick and binds to the substrate, while building up the surface and hiding imperfections. It’s also brushes on effortlessly even over flat paints or porous surfaces. Then you apply your topcoat on top of this thick primer and it goes on easy with no surface friction. It’s always better to apply a topcoat to a primer rather than the substrate. It will last longer and your top coat can dry and cure how it’s supposed too.
I recommend this primer for even pre primed trim. It will definitely last a lot longer starting with this primer and it so easy to apply by brush. Once it’s applied, your top coat also goes on effortlessly. Try this out sometime!
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow any insights on using this primer vs the XIM peel bond primer?
They will both do a great job, but I feel the Peel Stop Triple thick is thicker than XIM Bonding Primer!
Russ
Nice vid Russ.
Thank you!
very helpful
Thanks Susan!
Try and brush the groove and roll the substrate with a cigar roller. You’ll save your wrist and have zero brush strokes.
Hi
I would normally do this when using other primers that don’t spread so easily over a dried out substrate. But this just glides over surface with little surface friction.
Will this primer work on new wood?
Yes it’s great for new wood.
Is there any benefit to applying multiple coats of this primer?
Hi JD-
Yes, Indeed! I will show you this in a future video.
Russ
How long does the paint job last using the peel stop. My last paint job lasted 8 yrs with oilprimer.
Much longer. Going on 3 years so far. It also depends on your topcoat also. What did you topcoat over the oil primer?
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow i used glidden premium paint.
@cindyk4145 Thanks for sharing that!
Dude you should spend some $ and get a surf prep sander {vacuum style} it’ll change the way you sand. U won’t regret it
Hi
Thanks for the suggestion. I will check it out!
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow I bought a small Stanley vacuum and I hook it up to the sander it makes sanding interior trim especially easy because of adhesion purposes and then you’re not adding a whole bunch of dust into somebody’s house
Do you do mostly interior?

What if all you have is a sunny deck? that is what I am painting... the sun doesn't stop hitting it util 4 or 5 right before sunset! If it is cool in the morning would that work ok even if it is sunny?
Hi Sandra
Yes always start when the door is cool! Probably in the morning or on a cloudy day!
Russ
Why not do a second coat with sponge roller?
Hi
Do you like using a sponge roller?
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow yes I do and its perfect for squeezing paint in to hard to reach places.Do you not like them?
Hi
I don’t prefer to use them. They leave air bubbles on the finish and they tear apart easily!
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow they do tear .You use the roller and can always swipe with a brush. They are really great for popcorn ceiling.I never had an air bubble.
Hi
Thanks for sharing that! What size nap do you use?
Russ
I found out the paint on my old building is oil based. Any recommendations to paint latex over oil. Is there a primer that would allow the two to bond.
Hi
The best way is to use an oil based primer first, then Top Coat with Latex. If you want to use a latex primer, you will have to scuff it up first.
Would you recommend painting this product on areas that are in pretty good shape as well as the T-111 areas? eg. the eves of the house and porch area?
Hi David-
Yes, It Seals the previous surface providing a solid base for the top coat to stick too, and is a joy to spread!
Russ
would you use this on raw cedar or go with an oil based sealer ?
Hi Bill-
No use oil based sealer to prevent bleed thru. The surface I'm going over is really dry and weathered with a lot of cracks!
Hi Russ, I really appreciated this video. I have already purchased 4 cans of peel stop. I have had conflicting information about tinting this primer though. Even Zinsser doesn’t recommend tinting it. Do you have any comments about it and what tint manufacturer did you use. Zinsser also recommends priming over peel stop with cover stain which is oil based. I wanted to do bare timber areas with cover stain but very confused now. Kind regards, Rod from Australia.
Hi
Thanks for your questions. Did you purchase the Regular Zinsser Peel Stop, or the one I’m using in this video, which is the Zinsser Peel Stop Triple Thick high build Binding Primer. It says right on the can that it can be Tinted. As far as priming over Zinsser Peel Stop Triple Thick, there is no need, unless you have knots that will bleed through. In this case, spot prime knots before hand with Zinsser Cove Stain or Zinsser BIN. It’s important to seal these knots so they won’t bleed through the primer or Top Coat paint. Where did you order primer from?
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow
Hi Russ, Thankyou for your message. Your absolutely right!, maybe the Zinsser paint rep was referring to the standard peel stop. I ordered the primer from a paint supplier here who gets it direct from Rustoleum. I asked at Bunnings what tint they could use and he said Taubmans which he said is from Rustoleum. Is this correct or is there a better tint to use? They say the tint could change the chemical makeup of the paint reducing the effectiveness. Some professional painters and suppliers say oil base paint is best for bare timber as it has linseed oils in it to treat the timber (cove stain). Do you think peel stop is good enough to seal and treat the timber? I was thinking about trying both paints to see which one lasts better but the Zinsser rep and you seem to think this is not necessary. Just go with high build peel stop. Thanks ♥️
Hi
The Zinsser Peel Stop triple thick is great for wood that won’t bleed. In your case, that bare timber will bleed, So please use the Zinsser CoverStain Oil first to cover entire area to help guarantee you seal every potential stain. The Zinnser peel stop can be tinted no more than 1 oz, but after recently checking there technical data, I don’t see that any more! What is the top coat color. This stuff dries to a milky clear
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow The top coat is called “minimalist” it’s an off white so if I put on 2 top coats it should cover ok. I just liked your one primer and one top coat idea. I have already painted a section and peel stop is not as thick as I expected, as you said it’s milky and the timber soaks it up leaving a clear milky finish. In the sample section I did 2 coats of peel stop and 2 coats of top coat to get a good finish. The timber is 70 years old and was possibly pre primed so I don’t think sap bleed will be likely. I might buy a small can of cover stain and do a section where I have removed all the old paint just to see if it holds up better.
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow I want to send you a photo but can’t work out how to do it.
Yeah T1-111 cheapest exterior constant maintenance & moisture problems & 🐜
Yes, How did you prime and paint yours?
any quality exterior plywood should hold up very well especially if sealed and painted
Hi Bill
Yes it should if done correctly. This wasn’t done correctly in the first place!
Dude, just stucco that crap. You need 1/4" of primer to fill that stuff.
How would u stucco this?
Thanks 🇺🇸👍..From Fontana California 🇺🇸
Thanks Larry!
I can attest to this stuff being amazing. Ive got a house built in 1949 with original cedar siding. Very rough shape. Lots of prep and sanding, even using diama brush on my grinder some. Spend a LOT of time in prep. Then this stuff goes on two coats or more. I cant stress enough how great this stuff is. It seals in all the old cracked wood and any flaking that ive missed. Sand a little in between coats if desired and the results are incredible. People say siding looks new. I even prime back over cailking repairs because it seems to really lock in the repair and makes it very durable. Rock solid stuff its worth the money trust me.
Yes it seals everything in and is flexible. Do you like how easy it spreads even over dry porous surfaces?
Also using Sherwin Williams Emerald Rain Refresh as top coat. Very very good stuff. Also using Sherwin Williams Shermax caulking and very happy with it as well.
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow Yes it applies so nice and even and leaves a glassy smooth surface. I will probably use this stuff even where it's intended use is not needed. You can never overdo on the quality of the products you use.. but you sure can regret not using quality products. I'm putting so much time and effort into my house why wouldn't I use the best stuff to ensure I get the maximum quality finish and durability?! Great content and knowledge!👍
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow I also agree with you about using a brush to apply. I take my time and pay attention and make sure I work this stuff liberally into every nook and cranny. A roller would not work it in as well. You don't want your primer to sit on top of the surface you want to manipulate it into the wood which I think is another reason not to use it in direct sunlight. You want good working time to ensure 100 percent saturation. I probably work the brush 15-20 times over everything 😂
Thank you!
You are an excellent teacher! Thank you so much for your efforts!
Thank you!
4:06... You are getting blasted with a snoot full of dried paint flakes. I hate when that happens! It's time for a cheesy fifty cent covid mask.
Totally agree!
I got this in white, its thick in the can, but goes on thin?? You can see right through it to the wood….
Yes you can see right thru it, but u have to lay it down thick. It spreads really easy. U can tint it also. This primer is meant to bind down the surface and seal it. What are you using it for?
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow im putting it on window trim today. I put on two coats. Then i put two coats of paint over it.
Nice! did your top coat go on really easy over the Peel Stop?
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow yes, it went on easy. Hope it sticks. In going to try it on my bathroom ceiling around the edges is peeling. What brand of paint in is your favorite for wood siding?
I use either Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore for top coats, but have used many Moore. Where you from?
why would you paint by brush??????? Use 1/2" roller for the bulk of it and a brush for the grooves.
Hi Terry
The Barn Boards are extremely weathered with lots of alligator cracking. I use The 3 inch Brush to work the Zinsser Peel Stop into all these areas effortlessly, while sealing all these areas. Again, the boards are extremely weathered with lots of areas that are cracked. The brush also allows me to lay down more of a film thickness. I would have used a roller if the boards where not so weathered.
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow You could have easily used a 3/4 inch nap and you'd have been done in 1/50 of the time.
Hi
Yes I do usually like to roll and brush, but again the wood was so weathered and cracked, that I had to use the brush to physically work in the the Peel Bond primer into all the cracks. The Peel Bond primer easily floats over the surface though with no paint drag or paint friction! I have many other videos where I use a roller along with the brush.
Russ
@@terry7893 yeah that was hard to watch
I could of used a roller but then I would of had to back brush. I normally use a roller with other primers, but this stuff just floats over the dry surface so effortlessly!
