Guild sent me the newest version of their classic Polara model, the "Polara Deluxe". Great sounding pickups, a light weight body and a neck with a unique shape. But what do you think?

A totally Pro Rock guitar for $700.00 USD. It can only be argued to not be as good as others at 3 times or more the price, using a 100% totally subjective argument. I hope in future they offer it in white as they did in the past.
They just announced a White Kim Thayil model. Previously the white KT model was $6k and custome shop only.
@@werewolfonwheels Thanx for the heads up 🙂
woah. I've always been very meh about the SG look, but these are somehow some the sexiest guitars Ive seen. Kudos to the design team.
The original design team made this guitar as the 1970 Guild S-100. The exact same guitar but with a licensed Hagstrom whammy instead of the the stop tail piece. It only came in vintage sunburst. The designers wanted the stop tailpiece. They even designed one that was flatter than an SG and put on at a slant. The marketing guys want a whammy at the last minute hence the Hagstrom. In 1974 they switched to the 1970 prototype flatter style stop tailpiece.
This design was created in the 70s. So the current design team had nothing to do with it . Soundgardens Guitar Player uses Guild Polara 100s from the 70s .
Nice to see an actual Indian Rosewood fretboard on a budget friendly import again. Also glad to see they can pull off a $700 made in Indonesia guitar unlike the overpriced Epiphones coming out of China.
Super cool guitar!! Thanks for playing it.
The little markers in the body remind me of antique furniture finishing tacks, just a little fancy detail.
I'm definitely getting one in voltage yellow. These things slay.
22:39 whoa... that sounds very gnarly
I own the Kim Thayil sig model and totally agree with you. The neck is awesome and I have never bonded with a guitar the way I bonded with this one. I liked it so much I bought a Guild Starfirefire 1 Jet 90 semi hollow (which is also amazing) to keep it company.
I'm wondering how the neck compares to say a Gibson slim taper? ''Soft U'' sounds like it's maybe a D profile? Want one of these but would like a neck on the slimmer side.
wonderful guitar!!
That is just a fantastic looking guitar. Lovely warm tone too.
Love Guild guitars. Your review of the Surfliner Deluxe actually pushed me towards Guild. I picked up a Starfire I Double Cutaway with the trem and I absolutely love the thing. Same pickups and coil splitting as this Polara Deluxe, but semi-hollowbody. I can't put it down, it plays so nice.
Ryan I know you surf man but your stoner riffs are always so KILLER
Yeah plus he can Shoegaze like a Pro
My thoughts exactly!
Nice! I've always liked Guild!👍👍👀
Nice guitar! Guild has been off my radar for a long time. Not that there was any problem with any I have owned in the past mostly bass guitars. I still have an old Guild/De Armond Jet Star Bass husk I am planning on rebuilding/customizing.
One of, if not THE favourite of the many guitars ive been lucky enough to own was/is my very much missed '73 S100. I will regret selling that wonderful guitar for ever. It had the best humbuckers ive ever had the privelige to play through. They were so dynamic and had that magic ability to go from Sabbath to the sweetest 'edge of break-up' and beyond to the creamiest jazz tones. Being a vintage one there was no coil split option but there was an out of phase mini toggle which was very surprising giving you a cool pallet of colours. Theres was incredible. Mine had grover tuners too. It was natural coloured with a real thin, clear nitro lacquer. Now ive made myself all upset and blue. One day i will find that guitar and i will have it back. She will be mine, oh yes, she will be mine☝️
Guild makes really cool fiddles! I had a Starfire 1 that had, what I'm guessing, are the same pickups. Not overly hot, but not weak, either. Just well balanced and well voiced.
The only reason I let it go was to get an Epi Sheriton. Not something that I regret, I consider them equals. I just prefer the neck on the Epi. If that makes sense.
Good demo on this one, Ryan!
Between this and Surfliner, your channel has given me a huge appreciation for Guild Guitars, a company I'd never heard of. My next guitar will most likely be a Guild.
I bought a Starcaster Classic Vibe based solely off your video from NAMM a few years ago. I am 100% comfortable ordering one of these sight unseen based off this video. I can't wait!
Did you get to try the guitar before tou bought or did you buy it online?
@@lonelyboy6864 Pre-ordered it sight unseen without ever touching it. The Starcaster is still one of the best guitars I own, better than some of my american-made Fenders.
wow this is nice. even if it's a sunburst finish...(please don't beat me up on the internet, sunburst fans).
Timely, I've been seriously considering the Polara, kinda want the Kim Thayil one but this is frigging gorgeous!
1 have a 74 the first thing is the one i have has a roller bridge sealed tuners no push pull but a faze switch
These look great. I’m a sucker for sg models. I love that they are doing just enough of their own thing
Check out the Reverend Sensei shape (best to look at Reverb because they’ve done a bunch of versions, even a Junior one)
BRASS MARKERS FOR THE VOLUME KNOBS. YES. This thing looks killer, I hope they offer it in other colors.
i have a 90s re-issue with duncan pickups and an s300-a with guild pickups. this sounds more like the vintage pickups for sure. a little surprised they don't have the phase switch on this re-issue
I'm impressed by the toan on this Guild, very ballsy.
I just love a guitar with twin humbuckers.
The original 70’s ones are glorious
It sound really good.❤
Guild current builds make some of the best built necks, fret dress, top quality manufacturing.
Thanks for the great review! Keep 'em coming! I'm looking for lightweight guitars. Based on your review, I bought a 6.2lb Squier Bullet Mustang & enjoying it! Would like to see reviews of the Ibanez Standard S561, Gretsch G2655 Streamliner Center Block Jr Double-Cut P90 if it's not too much to ask!
Mr. Moto, Apache, Sleepwalk and Lynxtail!😎🏄👍👍
The context for your artwork and pedals is well framed.
I have the new Kim Thayil version of this - it's really fun and super stable.
Cool .. not a typical choice for electric guitar, but definitely worth checking out.
Love my Polara Limited. Just wish it had modern tuners instead of the open backs.
I went and played one of these the other day and immediately fell in love. Hardly anyone is talking about this guitar on YT, just the Kim Thayil version which IMO is not as good and costs $200 more. The pickups on this thing are amazing, the overall weight, balance and general feel of the guitar is great.
That's a really gorgeous guitar. I am a huge SG fan, and have been looking at this as an alternative. Was thinking the Canyon Dusk, but that sunburst is hard to ignore.
Awesome review. Thanks
Hi! Thank you for demoing this "8" positions pickup guitar! (The middle position has four different sounds not 2)
Thanks anyway, chears!
The phantom green polara is so nice
I have a LTD Viper 400 so I am good for this category (my SG stand in is a Schecter S-1 Elite) even though the Viper is more of a Les Paul (heft and tone) meets a Jazzmaster (it's an Offset body). The only SG appointments are the Devil Horns.
This Guild Deluxe would be great as a touring guitar as it can cover so much ground. Pair it up with a Schecter PT Fastback II with a Bigsby and you have everything except a hollow body in those two guitars.😎👍✨
Listening to the stereo Fuzz section on studio monitors and having a great time.
Oooooo I gotta think about this one
I have done an absolute universe of research on what guitar I want to be my main instrument. This is it. It has the exact tones I want. It looks really cool and apparently plays well too. Count me in.
Me too.
Love it. My second favourite sg adjacent guitar , the first of course being the gretsch astro jet
Ooooh I need to go look at that Gretsch! I love this body style and I got the epiphone custom a while back. Now I want to check out the alternatives. Also really want ESP's Viper
@@amandamarinovich6164 the gretsch is bonkers, ihave one they are also huge , unforunately only made crom 64-67 , eastwood did a version whicn funnily enough looks a lot like the guild
I like it. I think that is tobacco burst with 8 pickup combos. I would enjoy splitter switches like that, never had them. So it looks like you run the pedal line -all of them- into aby switch and then the front of those amps. Have you tried running the gain stages to the front and then useing the loop for the time pedals? (i realize that may be a challenge with two amps)
YES I am all for it.
I like the looks of the Guild over the other "G" brand. Sounds great too with lots of tonal options! Now only if it has series/parallel switching too!
That's a very easy solder job. Plenty of schematics opinions to show you how to swap those volume push/pulls to where each rewires both pups in different ways.
@@rmaxtpmx yes it is. Its fun playing around with wiring options. It's nice when companies offer these options out of the box too.
I liked the Kim Thayil signature but this looks better
Agreed. And you don’t have to pay extra coz it has an artist “tax” on it but yeah i like the look of this too. Phase switches are overrated in my opinion but if your genre needs one then get the signature version.
This is top of my GAS list but if they release one with a trem/wiggle stick then I’m in.
Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
I've never bonded with an SG but I sure would like to try one of these. BTW in a different sub-culture people who can accurately "eyeball" are said to have Ohaus Eyes.
Guild is doing everything right at the moment. The Kim Thayil Polara is an absolute beast. I will get the deluxe and probably the Polara Night Edition aswell.
I got to check out the regular Polaras at namm and they are good quality too. The finish and hardware is a little different but it feels like the bones are the same. It’s a solid release, I hope people don’t sleep on it.
It sounds classy and expensive. Looks good too.
Cool guitar, love the doom fuzz!! How close is your neighbor to your garage!!!
keep doing what you do!
I like the Canyon Dusk version.
Sounds great, but I'm looking to move some things on.
Oof, getting some serious "Hung Bunny" vibes from 22:30 onward... LOVE IT
It’s pretty cool! I do not know of any guitar stores here that sell Guilds. GC here in Tacoma doesn’t, nor Ted Brown Music.
I’ve played vintage Guilds and they’re great.
You can find Guilds in Olympia down at Capital City Music and in West Seattle at Thunder Road
Fun demo as always, Ryan 👍
Guild builds some fantastic guitars for their price point. They are in a very competitive price point, but the ones I've played feel high end and have a great sound. They deserve to be a bit more respect imo.
Aren't these made by Samick though and they just put the guild logo on them? I wanted to buy the Kim Thayil model and the fact that it was made by Samick changed my mind.
Man, I've been wondering about this guitar in sunburst since I saw the Sweetwater exclusive that has the Bigsby, which I have no need for. I have the red version maybe from 2017 or so, which I love, but it is a heavy beast - if I had to guess it may be over 8.5 pounds. I may have to consider buying this one and selling mine.
They made 100 I believe. I was too late. They had a cracked one forever though.
Just seen the price points with the other models ... Guild needed to do this a LONG time ago !! Now my question is was this in place before or after the yamaha aquision ? Either way ..
Guild is the shit. This and the Surfliner are two incredible flagship solidbodies.
Looking through your videos, I'm surprised you've never tried a Hartwood Charger. Unless maybe i missed it...
Looks great, respects to you and the viewers from the UK
Ryan where’d you learn the Munster’s theme? And your surf riffs are outrageous!
I know this is off topic but what’s that 3 humbucker sunburst guitar in the back on your right behind the jagstang? It looks so cool!
As a Polara owner since 1996, let me point out a couple things about this guitar. Pro: unlike an SG, the input jack is moved far enough away not to be in the way of access to the tone knobs. Con: 3 big problems that start past the 17th fret. 1. No inlays or side fret dot markers past the 17th fret. You are a given a big block on the first fret where you don't need it and nothing on the 19th and 21st frets where they could help guide you if you go shooting up there from your cowboy chords. 2. And when you go shooting up there beware that you don't whack the base knuckle of your thumb on that strap button that is right in your way. 3. And be prepared for that huge neck heel if you survive that strap button. - Moving the strap button further into the body is an easy fix and I think it was after the third time whacking my thumb that it was an easy decision to move that strap button inwards where it is actually now mounted on the body rather than on the neck heel. I had a professional luthier add matching inlays and side fret dot markers on the 19th and 21st frets and I love the way it turned out. Unfortunately, shaving down that neck heel was just too much of an ordeal to go through which would involve finish stripping and refinishing.
I sold my shiny new SG because I wasn't in love. My very first "real" guitar was a Guild (thank,s dad) - maybe I gotta get this instead of a Gibson? I would have to take off the finish and replace it with a thin nitro, but I could gig it.. poly is more temperature resistant too. Tour friendly. Maybe. Maybe this.
He's like the Mr Rogers of guitar. I love it.
Another Guild Polara added to my GAS list !! Good price too.
Hey Ryan what’s the green guitar with black pick guard over your left shoulder there ?
Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
Cool guitar! Back in the ‘70s, when Gibson’s quality was slipping, Guild was a better alternative. I bought a Guild X-500 jazzbox new in 1976, couldn’t afford a Gibson L-5. That Polara looks great in sunburst! Guild has really been making a comeback in the electric guitar field in recent years-I like the new Starfires too.
Guild is considered a deft, fine axe by pro's and been under the radar a while now. Surf's up!😸
Reminds me of my DeArmond LP junior. That was £130 used. This was how much....?
Were you playing the chords for “Never Wanna Leave” by Hate Drugs while demoing at some point?? It’s my favorite semi-60s surfy beach boys sounding song
Guild guitar have always been great guitars.
20:53 Wouldn't it be 8 total pickup options? I've got a schecter with the same layout (dual HB with coil-split for each PU) and I think it's 8 total possible tones
Yep, i want a Polara, i'm waiting for the arrive of the Kim Thayil signature in Mexico, i had seen that it has a D-shaped neck and i like that shape, also i like the sound of the HB-1s, but that Deluxe sounded great also.
I edit this comment because i had seen that these are not exclusive to Sweetwater, so i probably end buying it in Thomann, as usually, the prices are much lower there than in a gear store in Mexico.
Why? Guitars manufactured in Indonesia, and S. Korea have excellent quality, as just pulled the trigger on a Guild Polara S-100 Kim Thayil and can attest to this fact.
@@michaelgreen5206 I had read that lately korean and indonesian guitars have a much better quality than some american ones, so my guess is that the Kim Thayil signature is excellent and i'm crazy to try one, because i have relatively small hands and the "D" neck profile is perfect for me.
@@GuajoloteGonzales Will be trying one soon! I have small hands too but have no problem playing a 50"s series Gibson Standard, and am liking the heft. More mass on the neck = better tone than a thin neck imo.
@@michaelgreen5206 I must say that i'm very much skeptical about the relation of tone and mass on the neck, mostly because i had an Epiphone G-400 '61 Custom, it was a beautiful looking SG with 3 pickups, but apart that it had a "baseball bat neck" that was painful to play, it sounded like garbage, whether it was clean, with amp crunch or with fuzz, i had to use an EQ pedal to cut the mids because it was hideously boxy, while my Guild Jetstar that has a slimmer, but still kind of a medium "C" neck, sounds much better, both clean and with fuzz. Very versatile guitar, i must say, the LB-1s sound awesome and the neck, even if it's not as slim as i would like, it's much more comfortable to play for me.
@@GuajoloteGonzales Watch Andertons video where 50's Vs.60's Les Paul's are compared. When they strum each of those guitars (un-amplified), the 50's sounds better (resonate) cause the neck has more mass/weight
6:19 sounds just like Bobcaygeon by the Tragically Hip.
I liked the dinosaur walk with a swarm of bees , those to pedals together are killer
Guild is my brand. Guild is amazing
That reverb sounds fantastic with that guitar.
Does anybody know which reverb he’s using?
Is it really mahogany and rosewood?
Oh yes, it will...well I'm gonna buy it.
Two best under-the-radar new production guitar brands: Guild and Harmony.
Eastman not too bad.
will not be sold with a soft bag, as in no case at all or it includes a hardshell case? i miss the days when guitars over 500.00 usually included the case. in fact, one way that brick and mortar retailers ripped people off was charging extra for the matching case.
that thing sounds great. play some Soundgarden
How’s the balance? Guitars of that SG configuration are notorious for neck dive.
I think it would be 8 different pickup configurations/tones, not 7.
3-way on NECK has neck and neck split
3-way on BRIDGE has bridge and bridge split
3-way on MIDDLE has bridge+neck, bridge split + neck split, bridge split + neck, bridge + neck split
Thought I sounded better than ever
twang on a coil split is to be expcted especially on a single humbucker setting
I bought a new Gibson SG Standard which arrived with a cracked neck, it's replacement had a bowed neck. So I sent that one back and I ended up buying the Polara in Cherry Red, and now I wonder why I ever considered a Gibson in the first place. This is a riff machine. It really just wants to be played.
I panicked when the pandemic hit & I sold an emerald-green 2000 Guild Blues-90, in the parking-lot of a North Hollywood CVS & I regret few things more.
Completely asthetic, but I think I like the strings through the body on regular model better. I wouldn't be sad to have the deluxe. The coil split is cool. Sweet guitar!
Dude, what is that shirt?
It is almost as cool as that guitar.
Gibson’s gonna sue them
This body shape and headstock has been out for decades. Gibson wouldn't have a chance.
@@villageidiot9867dude just likes smelling his own farts. Let him enjoy it.
God of Doom and King of Shoegaze, your Awsome!!!!
Does this model have neck diving?
For 700 dollars that's cheap for such a great guitar 🎸. Keep those great reviews coming.
I really hope there is potential for putting a vibrato on this guitar...would love to see a bigsby on it.
Exactly what i thought. It would be perfect
Or perhaps, a Dusenberg Les Trem?
