This flick is one of the better pieces of sci-fi to be released in the past 10+ years. Dread, Robocop, and Upgrade would make a terrific sci-fi triple feature. And for reference, I usually lean more toward flicks like Alex Proyas’ Dark City for my sci-fi but Upgrade worked quite well.
Iain telling Gary he’s grasping at the ending made me laugh while he’s grasping at every little thing to criticize it. Once he asked why the couple didn’t have children I knew I was in for it 🤣
Out of all the films you guys have covered, Ian seemed most eager to criticize this one. Which is weird since Upgrade is one of the better sci-fi movies to come out in the last decade.
This film is a gem. Genuinely loved it. And it’s another example what you can do with very little. I think Upgrade cost something like 3 million dollars. To make. How does a film that costs so little relative to the big blockbusters of today look so much better than those blockbusters? Crazy. Highly recommend Upgrade. And Invisible Man
Cyberpunk meets Saw! It's loosely based off of R Talsorian's Cyberpunk 2020 a table top RPG published back in 1990, Blade Runner, Max Headroom and Robocop. All the while being directed by Leigh Whannell! It's absolutely brilliant!
I enjoyed Upgrade, the Cyberpunk aesthetic was believable and realistically within reach, and was used sparingly enough to whet the appetite without being bogged down with it. The action scenes were entertaining and really cool to watch, the story was fast paced and never seemed to drag it's heels, and the acting was good throughout. Cool movie all round. Great review guys, cheers.
Him writing the code, to me, read as Stem fighting off what the company man was trying to do and only having it in it to say it instead of to use more processing to write it out.
I was lucky enough to see this at the cinema. I remember it got taken off rather quickly which was a shame. Such a great film! Got it on bluray now. Cheers guys!
half of what makes this movie good is the camera gimmick in the action scenes. its extremely effective at not only upping the visual interest but also making you feel in place of the character being led like a puppet through those actions.
I absolutely love this movie. It's definitely one of the best sci-fi flicks I've seen in the past decade. Thank you guys for the review! Great watch as always.
Typically AI movies don’t usually do it for me when trying to show the horror of it, its a preference rather than a criticism, but this movie and Ex Machina are the 2 that really made me feel the horror from it
I loved this one The camara work is so unique The fight sequences It kinda has a robocop vibe to it Yes maybe Ian has some fair questions but I guess it's all subjective in the way that maybe some details were not really required that much at least I didn't need them Because I knew that the movie was trying to keep it simple while being entertaining at the same time.
This was a combination of 90’s cyberpunk like Strange Days and 70’s sci fi the two rocks the cars all of that felt like the 70’s view of the 2000’s. That’s why it feels essentially timeless and disconnected. Also did he get compensation? Where do you think the robots came from! Stem knew he wouldn’t accept help until he tried to kill himself. The fact that he was entirely virgin territory was why he was picked.
I took it as STEM needing Gray to think he had control at the end so he could slap the guy into a mental simulation. Gray seeing his wife was STEM testing to see if he could actually affect how Gray's mind perceives things.
The parts for the cars that Grey rebuilds aren't mass produced. They're likely produced at a small scale or repurposed. And they're expensive. Just like in the real world, Gray refurbishing that Firebird is no different from someone rebuilding a 59' Caddy or a 71' Charger or a DeLorean. You can get the parts, the materials, the lights, even the paints. But it takes research, connections, forums, assistance from classic car communities, shipping parts from all over...and it's not cheap. Which is also why the client he was building the car for was a rich guy. There's a reason that if you search the net for a "mint condition" 69' Boss 429 (John Wick's car) that they're priced between 80 and $130,000 USD; because of the cost and man hours involved in their restoration. You're not being charged 130K for a 50 year old car because it looks cool. And that being said, it's easy to imagine that while Gray's income isn't as steady as his wife's because it's dependent on how many jobs he can finish in a year, each job he completes can easily pull in $100K or more given his clientele. Much like with the history of Gray and Asha'a relationship or the exact timeframe of the story, or the state of his post accident litigation or wife's life insurance payout, Upgrade doesn't spell every detail out. It trusts that through the show-don't-tell model of storytelling that the audience will be able to use basic knowledge to understand aspects of its characters and its world while allowing the pacing of the narrative to move along at a clip. Focus on the steak and not the peas. Don't worry about unnecessary information that doesn't impact the story directly. It's like watching a Batman movie and wanting to know what Bruce's annual income is from Wayne Enterprises. It's immaterial. He's the CEO of a publicly traded company started by his father and it offers him great wealth. The exact depth of it doesn't matter.
Again Gary proves he’s the only reason to watch these videos. I wonder if Iain understood Se7en as they don’t tell us where the city is or what year it is hahaha
That was my thought as well. So use to bad movies giving you every piece of information you can't watch something that show rather than tell without complaining. That's not on the movie. That's on you.
indeed well made movie, the concept is interesting and has cool twists as the movie progress, director and cast did a great job with the production, and is a cool movie to experience
Watched this one with the wife. Tom Hardy light performed well enough and I’d say it was a decent B movie type flick with a budget. The premise while not original was well executed and has a proper downer ending.
Great review guys, just as fun as the movie I'd say. I love that this movie gave Iain so many questions, it shows that he was really invested in the whole world. I don't think he realizes that's what makes good world building. Little hints of the world around them, tho I will admit it's very isolated, so his questions are completely valid. There really isn't any reason for them not to go more into that stuff xD, and maybe they did but it got cut? You did both mention the fast pace.. I also loved all the fight sequences, the choreography was so precise and really interestingly shot. I totally believe James Wan saw some of those scenes and decided to make his own "dark-fun" movie. I also really love that they opted for the title Upgrade, because by the end of the film it takes on a different meaning.
Great review. Iain does seem a little too concerned with shit that just doesn’t matter though!😂. I need to watch it again to see if I see what he sees the second time around!
The venom movie we all deserve but will never get. Great review guys once again never disappoints. I agree with Iain too. Terrible sci fi but the film is kick ass!
Cracking sci fi movie with some great twists and messed up gore. I cant help but notice a few parallels though with malignant (which I enjoyed in a so bad its good way). The fighting scenes are very very similar as is the notion of not being in control of yourself.
Mate.....who cares if Stem needs to eat or drink? Not everything needs to be spelled out. This is an absolutely mean spirited, lean and brutal little gem of a flick. Great review overall though, love you blokes content.
Great film. My takeaway from this review is that Iain needs everything spoon fed to him because he can't make deductions on his own. Maybe watch Transformers or something.
I was able to see this in theaters. I've been telling everyone to watch it for over 5 years now. Terrific movie

I actually watched this as a double feature with The Guest. Worked really well actually
We are close to Ian asking if Blade Runner 2049 is in the future 😂
Iain telling Gary he’s grasping at the ending made me laugh while he’s grasping at every little thing to criticize it. Once he asked why the couple didn’t have children I knew I was in for it 🤣
For the future I'd love to see you guys tackle Orca (1977), The Collector (2009), or Pacific Rim (2013). 3 very different films right there
This is Logan Marchel Green from Prometheus.
Out of all the films you guys have covered, Ian seemed most eager to criticize this one. Which is weird since Upgrade is one of the better sci-fi movies to come out in the last decade.
word. The lack of background info in some places actually adds to it
This film is a gem. Genuinely loved it. And it’s another example what you can do with very little. I think Upgrade cost something like 3 million dollars. To make. How does a film that costs so little relative to the big blockbusters of today look so much better than those blockbusters? Crazy.

Care. The thing many big studios nowadays, don’t have.
What a coincidence, I recently watched this film, alongside with Dredd 2012, on the 4th of July. What a great film! The ending is a cherry on the top.
Fantastic double feature. 👍🏻👍🏻
This is such a great underrated gem.
Another fantastic review gentlemen. Absolutely loved it

Have you guys done splice?

I forgot how awesome this movie was
I was lucky enough to see this at the cinema. I remember it got taken off rather quickly which was a shame. Such a great film! Got it on bluray now. Cheers guys!
With this movie I always thought it had a David Cronenberg body horror vibe with all the implants

"this suppose to be Venom movie"
I knew both movie but why I never realize that before
Iain nitpicking the hell out of this one. It's a masterpiece
This film is a work of genius. 20 years from now it will considered as good the first Terminator or any John Carpenter.
I took it as STEM needing Gray to think he had control at the end so he could slap the guy into a mental simulation. Gray seeing his wife was STEM testing to see if he could actually affect how Gray's mind perceives things.
I Love this damn film.
I had no idea that was Adam from Saw. Goddamn. Really good movie, too.

I don't want to know how they reload those firearm implants. Lol
Great jobs guys, you are both amazing! Love your reviews!
A bit like Parazyte premise: a sentient entity cohabiting in one's body and granting superpowers..
This is the best Venom movie made so far.
Thanks guys.
Bloody-lovely stuff. Never heard of this film, definitely going to seek it out now. Cheers fellahs.
Those rare parts - 3D printing. Kind of weird to call a mechanic tecnophobe because a car is a tech.
Hey lads Ive never seen this flick yet but it looks pretty decent! Cant wait to check it out Shelf life! Love you guys 👊
Again Gary proves he’s the only reason to watch these videos. I wonder if Iain understood Se7en as they don’t tell us where the city is or what year it is hahaha
That is pretty harsh mate.
That was my thought as well. So use to bad movies giving you every piece of information you can't watch something that show rather than tell without complaining. That's not on the movie. That's on you.
But like is this even earth they never told us
Great review guys!!! KEEP IT UP!!

Arnie hated technology in 6th Day
In essence I think STEM caused DID(dissociative identity disorder) in the human and then locked him away, while stem became the new personality

I liked the film. Almost thought it was Tom Hardy , and not Logan Marshall that played in this, maybe because of the beard! Nice review guys! Thanx! 👍
Nice! This is a hidden gem for sure! :)
Great review guys but will someone tell Iain what year this movie was set in 😂👊👊
The venom movie we all deserve but will never get. Great review guys once again never disappoints. I agree with Iain too. Terrible sci fi but the film is kick ass!

It's a solid movie. Thanks guys! Glad y'all covered this. And I'm with Ian on this one, i wiki the shit out of things too 😂
LADS 2 films u need to review.
WES CRAVENS DEADLY BLESSING 1981 and THE ENTITY 1982 👍👍👍
Venom. They even look alike.
Loved this movie! Thanks, gents! 👊
this is pretty much the mind worm story.
shelf life! 🎉
Love this movie!!!
Mate.....who cares if Stem needs to eat or drink? Not everything needs to be spelled out.
This is an absolutely mean spirited, lean and brutal little gem of a flick.
Great review overall though, love you blokes content.
why is 1080p so bad? it looks not good sorry
*Turn up*
Iain has the most odd complaints. They don’t tell you the specific year? Move on, mate.
fk yeah!!!
Tom Hardy's stunt double was great in this, shite in Prometheus though😂
Scrap that first comment 😂
The dude dont even work. How is he even getting any.
Hey but like how do we know he has a driving license ? Why didnt they tell us who cut his hair, where are his parents….. lol
First 🎉
Second
Great film. My takeaway from this review is that Iain needs everything spoon fed to him because he can't make deductions on his own. Maybe watch Transformers or something.
