Barn Quilts were used 300 years ago to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune to immigrants settling in Pennsylvania and eventually into other parts of the country. They were also used for travelers to identify certain properties. We have them in rural Virginia also. I love them! So pretty!
Barn Quilts are also an art form. Many "Barn Quilt Trails" in Ohio. They are placed on garages & houses as well as barns. Also might show that a "quilter" lives there 😊
I love how this was formatted. You see the pictures and the both of you at the same time. You reactions to the pictures. Did an excellent job on the format.
The yellow plant from a submission in Manitoba Canada that Laura and her mom was unsure of is called a Lady Slipper orchid, in case anyone is curious. Beautiful garden submissions. I’ve enjoyed watching all 5 of the videos.
It’s so refreshing to see a Zone 3 garden and what can be accomplished in these harsh climates. Makes me admire the gardener even more for finding what works. Bravo!!
The quilts on barns celebrates the history throughout Oregon’s countryside. One can travel around Oregon and follow a quilt trail. I used to think a quilt on a barn designated the barn as a historical site but as it turns out, it’s all about the quilt. During the Revolutionary War, Barn Quilts were used to show American forces that the area was safe, secure, and supplies were available.
@@jeanbrewer576 hi Jean -- to make one, you can use marine ply or other wood you have. you'll use an exterior primer paint, two coats of your exterior paint, and then at least one top coat for the elements. :)
The yellow flowers you guys were wondering if they were orchids are called “Lady Slippers” and actually grow in the wild here in zone 3 … they are a very rare find so very special when you do!! Score one for us die hard zone 3ers who watch with envy at all the plant options you can grow 🥰🥰
Hi y'all... We have them here in Tennessee. Primarily in the Great Smoky Mountain. They also grow in a pink color. Beautiful flowers. Love it when you Mom is in the videos. Hugs from Nashville .... Jill 🤠
Hi, Laura. I love your videos; as a hobby, I am a native plant specialist and gardener for the U.S. and am currently pursuing my master's in biomedical engineering. You DO have tons of cacti native to your area, which I believe is the Great Basin and Range. But from other videos, I know you look for plants such as lupine. You have tons of native lupine in your area, and not only are they indigenous, but many are also extremely drought tolerant and prefer your highly alkaline soil. They also act more as a ground cover/shrub, blooming profusely. These include: -Lupinus polyphyllus -Lupinus leucophyllus -Lupinus rivularis -Lupinus argenteus
The things hanging on the barns are called Hex signs. Different images, colors, and patterns are supposed to offer blessings or protection. I live in Amish country in PA and almost every barn has Hex signs. My mom loves to do the driving tours around the countryside to see all the gorgeous barns. Thank you again for another beautiful and inspirational video!
I was always told they are called barn quilts and are hung to represent the work women do on the farm which isn’t seen on the land the way men’s work is.
@@GwynneDear That’s really cool! I’ve never heard that before. From a quick google search, it looks like hex signs and barn quilts aren’t the same thing. Barn quilts are inspired by hex signs but lean more towards quilting designs. Hex signs are Penn Dutch and their designs have specific meanings and are meant to protect or “place a hex” on the buildings to protect them from harm.
@@sustainabetty8069 I’m from southwest Virginia and we have a big Mennonite community here, which is where you see the most barn quilts, so it makes sense that the two are connected.
I loved the insertion of Tom Sellek and his foliage stache! 🤣🤣🤣. Great video, well formatted. Love seeing Susan with Laura. Always a treat when they get together. 💚💚💚
I wish I could be more like Susan. She’s a treasure. She and I are about the same age but she is eons ahead of me in the love, joy, patience and kindness departments. I wish I had Laura’s joy, energy and creativity. There are no bounds to what she can do. Love them both!
I'm pretty sure she was a nurse, so she thrives on service to others, nurturing and healing. They are all very strongly connected to Aaron's father's church, that's how Aaron and Laura met. They were both doing work with the church. People involved in spiritual life have friends and family and church members that support and inspire each other. Service to others, joy, kindness, generosity etc. are contagious, yes? 🙏🌞👼
She is so genuinely sweet and gentle. It flows from her so naturally. The whole family seems that way, but Susan has likely set the tone. Samantha Grace appears to be naturally showing the same traits as her grandmother
The orchid like flower could be a lady slipper, they grow wild here in Michigan. The art on the barn is a reproduction of a family bed quilt. Barn quilts began as a way to honor a loved one with a gorgeous piece of folk art. Love the Laura and mom videos.
Laura, I'm sure Aaron will agree with me here, but you should let your momma have that white arbor. It would be so cool to see what she can do with it in her garden space and it sounds like she has a plan for it, too! You can take us on the ride along when you show up and try and sneak it in her space like she tried to do with the plant stand in the Hartley!
Okay, I’m not the only person who upon reading the title stopped watching whatever was on and tuned in straight away. Yippie, Susan, Laura and Aaron. What a great Friday morning surprise. Thank you.

How exciting to see my home garden and church garden in this week's garden inspiration! Thanks so much!! It was really fun to watch you and your mom together -- it's like going on a garden tour with your best garden buddy! Not sure if this comment will be seen in the bazillions of comments, but just to clarify a couple of the plants if anyone is curious.... the purple plant in the church garden is 'Pale Puma' Purple Heart (Setcreasea pallida) (not coleus), and the yellow is Zexmenia (Wedelia texana) (not coreopsis), a couple of Texas tough perennials. Thanks again. So enjoying this series and all the beautiful gardens!
Loving all of the inspirational videos, my baby girl and I watch every morning. The flower at 29:35 is Cypripedium parviflorum (also known as Lady's Slipper) part of the orchid family, it is native to North America. I was introduced to it by my grandfather when I was young during hikes near his home in Bissett Creek, Ontario, Canada zone 4a, it grows wild in the forests up here, by far my favorite wildflower.
Love this segment. You should have your own TV Garden Show, But as the show progresses and you ladies are three sheets to the wind, the real fun of the show begins. 😂
The yellow orchids from the Manitoba garden are called Ladyslippers. They are a native plant but are not to be disturbed or taken from the wild. Thankfully, Ladyslippers are beginning to show up commercially, which enables gardens like this to have a collection. In certain areas, they are pink, although they are rare.
Yes, these were my Grandmas' favorite flower. She used to take us on nature walks to see what was growing, and always got excited if we came across a Ladies Slipper. Seeing those brought back fun memories. 😊
We have pink Lady slippers in the woods here on Massachusetts! Thankfully they have been protected for many decades and are becoming more abundant in the wild. ❤️

I always enjoy watching your channel. I happily live vicariously through you as my home is an apartment on the second floor (always in shade), however, after seeing the fifth floor balcony garden in Indiana I realized in that moment what I can do! Thank you for everything you do!
Yes! You should! I started on an apartment balcony and learned so much about gardening just from growing things in containers. A couple tips: get the biggest containers you can fit up there because watering is challenging and bigger retains more moisture. Also, if storage of your pots is an issue in the winter just leave the soil in them and stick some evergreen foliage in to make them decorative all winter too. 🙂
I love that Toni of Toni's Signature Gardens sent in photos of her yard. She is one of our area Master Gardener and I love driving by her home. The front is filled with natives that are always so beautiful to see and not just the typical manicured yard. Dreaming of her helping me achieve something as beautiful as she has achieved here in our North Texas area of DFW, Zone 8a. Love you and your sweet mom's comments. It's always a blast when you two are together!
Awe, thank you! It was so exciting to be featured this week! We finally got a Texas garden in! Yahoo! I better get out there and do my winter cleanup! Definitely NOT manicured right now. Eeeeek!! But Spring is coming!
Looking at all these photos of everyone's gardens really makes me want spring to get here and to go and get a country home with a babbling Brook running through it and a back drop of trees. Just love all the gardens .
Hi Laura, Aaron and Susan! I enjoy seeing both Aaron and Susan in these videos. Both bring a different view. Laura, I agree with Aaron, give your Mom the arbor! She did give you the beautiful plant stand. I agree with Susan, too, that it would look much better at their place. All of the submissions were very pretty. Thank you so much for sharing and to those whose submissions were picked!

Barn quilts tell stories about individual farms, historical events or communities while also adding visual interest to the countryside and increasing rural tourism
What a JOY to spend some time this morning, sharing a beverage with Laura and Susan as they guide us through the beautiful garden spaces from friends all over the world. Thank you for inviting us to share this time with you♡ Blessings to you for an amazing weekend!
So good to see the inspiration from Toni at Signature Gardens! I live in Fort Worth TX, and I have a hard time finding information on how to garden over here. I was so excited to look her up and I found tons of information on planting and caring for plants from Master Gardener Toni in my area!
Laura Garden Answer last night we have nopales or cactus leaf, the leafs get clean take the torns of with knife or pealer, wash and dry its a bit kind like aloe sticky, but if you dry it well and grill it with olive oil and salt, and est it with grill meat and a gril mexican style salsa, is yummy, also you cut it in small pieces steam it a bit then wash to take away the stickynes you can also use water with ice,and add in pico de gallo tomatoes onions chop cilantro lemon salt and jalapeño add the cactus or nopal as we call it, and there you have a pico de gallo ready to eat with some gill meats or chicken..is healthy for diabetic people i use ith in vegetable fruits shake🤷♀️ also..
Please tell me I’m not the only one talking back to the video as if I’m in the conversation! Haha! Perfect time of year for these garden inspiration videos 😊
Mom's here! Love it when you two get together. Such wonderful loving banter. Those lady slipper orchids at minutes 29 to 30 brought brought tears to my eyes. We have a beautiful pink lady slipper that grows wild here in Virginia. That stand is amazing! These videos are so enjoyable. So glad you are continuing this series. I go back and look at them, pausing over those that spark an idea for my own garden or just wallowing in their beauty.
You should’ve seen the biggest smile on my face when I saw today’s video title. I love anything with your Mom in it. She’s so fun and has such beautiful energy. Love this video series!
I bet you could bribe your mom to join you every week for this garden picture series in exchange for that rusty arbor! I love it when your mom joins in.
I love watching you and your mom, the interaction between the both of you is delightful. The joy and smiles you both show when your talking about plants is infectious. Thank you for the great start to my day❤😊
Susan reminds me so much of my mom. My mom was so gentle & kind & never had a negative thing to say about anyone or thing. She taught 1st grade for 30 years & always spoke to me & my siblings like we were 6 years old, ha ha. Anyway, I appreciate hearing Susan’s sweet thoughts about all of these beautiful gardens. Thank you, Susan, for your time & thoughts. They are recognized & appreciated ❤
Barn Wuilts were originally started to honor a family member. The quilt pattern was normally chosen from a quilt that has been in the family, and quite often one that has been passed down generations. Now the quilt patters on barns has become so popular and often also not limited to barns but also found on sides of buildings. There are now walking and also driving Trail of Quilts that you can follow to enjoy. I live in North Carolina and we have a trail that runs through our mountains.

Your garden is beautiful!!!!
@@heatherw.2751 Thank you!! It's worth the hard work for sure! ❤️
@@angelaengler2387 Thank you so much! I definitely love being out there! 🙂
Drumroll...the moment we've all been waiting for...a sit down with Susan! ❤️
I always enjoy watching your channel. I happily live vicariously through you as my home is an apartment on the second floor (always in shade), however, after seeing the fifth floor balcony garden in Indiana I realized in that moment what I can do! Thank you for everything you do!
Diana SantaCroce hello I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship please were are you from?
Yes!

We all wish we were that “ Mother”! She is a breath of fresh air
I wish I could be more like Susan. She’s a treasure. She and I are about the same age but she is eons ahead of me in the love, joy, patience and kindness departments. I wish I had Laura’s energy and creativity. There are no bounds to what she can do. Love them both!
"They've got their thinkin' cap on" Hahah you guys crack me up. So wholesome and sweet. I love watching all your videos, but especially when Mom joins.
How I wish my own beautiful Mother was still here - she really would have loved watching this with me. Susan is probably around my age, but your relationship reminds me so much of me & my own mother. Never, ever take time with your mothers for granted.

These videos make me miss my mama so much too! Lost her in 2016, and man, the missing is STRONG! 💔 Ur advice of nvr taking time with our moms for granted is so true! 🥰💞
Kudos to all the gardeners who submitted photos! Wow!!
Thank you
That dog is a Collie. Love those dogs. They are super intelligent and great with kids. ❤👍
These videos are so much fun. It feels like I’m sitting at the table watching with you and enjoying your reactions.

You 2 Ladies are such a joy to watch. The chortling, giggling and laughing, so cute. And a cocktail to boot!
Always a treat when you and your Mom get together!!! ♥️
Hello Kathy how are you doing,
where are you from?
I find myself smiling, laughing and talking to you and your mom, when you're in a video together! So much fun!
I think the interaction of you and your mom is my favorite format. She adds to the experience of the gardens.
First time watching with Laura and her mom and I understand better. There is a soothing quality to Laura's mom's voice and your ideas blend☺☺
Hey that’s my garden!!!! I’m Justin from Georgia! Zone 7! Thanks for including me Laura!!! So excited 🎉🎉🎉
☕️Good morning Susan and Laura, and all GA friends. A lovely way to begin any day, seeing all the spectacular gardens and sharing them with you two…you both are a hoot!! Compliments to the gardeners on their beautiful creations, and wow, the talent! Thank you for the fun giggles and a nod to Aaron in the background. Thank you for the inspiration and this much needed break in the winter months. 💚🌷💚🌷💚🌷💚💖
Sandy's garden is breathtaking. I was amazed and wondered how that gardener got heaven down to earth in their yard 🌴🥀🌳🌼🌲🌻🍀
Your Mom is the sweetest 💗
After a while of watching you would think you could become less impressed by the different gardens.. but I feel like a kid in a toy store! Every garden provokes a WOOWW how pretty!!!! 😂just stunning and magical!
You and your mom are so precious together. Love watching both of you. ❤ 💗 💖
I loved coming home from work today to more garden inspiration! Thank you for sharing these everyone! It makes this long winter more bearable!
Juli Dalton hello I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship please were are you from?
Barn quilts tell stories about individual farms, historical events or communities while also adding visual interest to the countryside and increasing rural tourism
😂 I’m not sure what I enjoyed more, the photos of the banter. You guys crack me up.
I'm not really a fan of blue fescue grass but that last garden has changed my mind. That was beautiful.
People have pretty gardens everywhere but lots of work goes into working them to make them gorgeous.
Yayy! I love these, so much inspiration for my gardens! Keep these going to 100!
Love your gardens!
I'm excited for your tours to start again!
100+ episodes would be great
What a JOY to spend some time this morning, sharing a beverage with Laura and Susan as they guide us through the beautiful garden spaces from friends all over the world. Thank you for inviting us to share this time with you♡ Blessings to you for an amazing weekend!
So now Laura you'll have to go and set the arbor up in her yard for her as a surprise - like she did with the Hartley plant stand. 😇
Exactly!
So good to see the inspiration from Toni at Signature Gardens! I live in Fort Worth TX, and I have a hard time finding information on how to garden over here. I was so excited to look her up and I found tons of information on planting and caring for plants from Master Gardener Toni in my area!
Yea! Glad you found my page and I hope you find the info I share helpful. Texas gardening is challenging for sure!
Loved hearing Laura and Mom critiquing the beautiful gardens!! Please repeat format!
🌺❤️🌺❤️
I am 63 and enjoy watching you and your Mom because I miss mine so much. Loved all the beautiful gardens.
Thanks for the info 😊
I love your Mom, You, and Aaron discussing the gardens. God is a great Creator and Gardener!
Such beautiful gardens! And I LOVED that your Mom was with you…definitely hope she joins you for the rest of the series!
Please tell me I’m not the only one talking back to the video as if I’m in the conversation! Haha! Perfect time of year for these garden inspiration videos 😊
Yay!!! Time with Laura and her Mom, and gorgeous gardens!!! Great start to the day!
Sheryle hello I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship please were are you from?
You should’ve seen the biggest smile on my face when I saw today’s video title. I love anything with your Mom in it. She’s so fun and has such beautiful energy. Love this video series!
I do enjoy these videos. However, having your Mom with you made it extra special. She is a delight to watch. Thank you
I bet you could bribe your mom to join you every week for this garden picture series in exchange for that rusty arbor! I love it when your mom joins in.
Edith hello I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship please were are you from?
Oh my goodness, I love your mother! I'm so glad you had her on here with you.
Linda hello I’m really impressed with your comment, if you don’t mind friendship please were are you from?
Barn Wuilts were originally started to honor a family member. The quilt pattern was normally chosen from a quilt that has been in the family, and quite often one that has been passed down generations.
Now the quilt patters on barns has become so popular and often also not limited to barns but also found on sides of buildings. There are now walking and also driving Trail of Quilts that you can follow to enjoy.
I live in North Carolina and we have a trail that runs through our mountains.
