    Barn Quilts were used 300 years ago to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune to immigrants settling in Pennsylvania and eventually into other parts of the country. They were also used for travelers to identify certain properties. We have them in rural Virginia also. I love them! So pretty!

    The things hanging on the barns are called Hex signs. Different images, colors, and patterns are supposed to offer blessings or protection. I live in Amish country in PA and almost every barn has Hex signs. My mom loves to do the driving tours around the countryside to see all the gorgeous barns. Thank you again for another beautiful and inspirational video!

    • @GwynneDear
      @GwynneDear Год назад

      I was always told they are called barn quilts and are hung to represent the work women do on the farm which isn’t seen on the land the way men’s work is.

    • @sustainabetty8069
      @sustainabetty8069 Год назад +4

      @@GwynneDear That’s really cool! I’ve never heard that before. From a quick google search, it looks like hex signs and barn quilts aren’t the same thing. Barn quilts are inspired by hex signs but lean more towards quilting designs. Hex signs are Penn Dutch and their designs have specific meanings and are meant to protect or “place a hex” on the buildings to protect them from harm.

    Hi, Laura. I love your videos; as a hobby, I am a native plant specialist and gardener for the U.S. and am currently pursuing my master's in biomedical engineering. You DO have tons of cacti native to your area, which I believe is the Great Basin and Range. But from other videos, I know you look for plants such as lupine. You have tons of native lupine in your area, and not only are they indigenous, but many are also extremely drought tolerant and prefer your highly alkaline soil. They also act more as a ground cover/shrub, blooming profusely. These include:
    -Lupinus polyphyllus
    -Lupinus leucophyllus
    -Lupinus rivularis
    -Lupinus argenteus

    The quilts on barns celebrates the history throughout Oregon’s countryside. One can travel around Oregon and follow a quilt trail. I used to think a quilt on a barn designated the barn as a historical site but as it turns out, it’s all about the quilt. During the Revolutionary War, Barn Quilts were used to show American forces that the area was safe, secure, and supplies were available.

    The yellow orchids from the Manitoba garden are called Ladyslippers. They are a native plant but are not to be disturbed or taken from the wild. Thankfully, Ladyslippers are beginning to show up commercially, which enables gardens like this to have a collection. In certain areas, they are pink, although they are rare.

    Barn Quilts can be traced back to the start of our country. It is thought that early European immigrants may have brought the idea with them. Originally barns were not painted but had pieces of artwork hung on them to identify the owner and location. Quilting was a craft and skill taught to young women in the home. Hex Signs and Other Barn Decorations,” documented a few of what he believes are the ancient markings of hex signs: the four-pointed star signifies good luck, five points protect the barn from lightning, six points signify love and marriage, eight points fertility and a sixteen-pointed star was sure to bring prosperity to a farm.

      Yes! You should! I started on an apartment balcony and learned so much about gardening just from growing things in containers. A couple tips: get the biggest containers you can fit up there because watering is challenging and bigger retains more moisture. Also, if storage of your pots is an issue in the winter just leave the soil in them and stick some evergreen foliage in to make them decorative all winter too. 🙂

The flower at 29:35 is Cypripedium parviflorum (also known as Lady's Slipper) part of the orchid family, it is native to North America. To the question about barn quilts! My grandma always told me that back in the day, a quilt on the barn meant is was a safe space for refuge for slaves on the underground railroad. I'm not sure the truth behind this, but love to belive in the idea. Today they are more of a tradition. In my state, Iowa, they are very common. There are many "trails" promoted in our communities where visitors can follow a map and see various barn quilts along a route. I have painted a handful of quilts myself. We have a large 6x6 ft. One on our barn along with smaller 18x18 in seasonal ones in our garden. I have also painted some for others' barns in our area.

    Laura Garden Answer last night we have nopales or cactus leaf, the leafs get clean take the torns of with knife or pealer, wash and dry its a bit kind like aloe sticky, but if you dry it well and grill it with olive oil and salt, and est it with grill meat and a gril mexican style salsa, is yummy, also you cut it in small pieces steam it a bit then wash to take away the stickynes you can also use water with ice,and add in pico de gallo tomatoes onions chop cilantro lemon salt and jalapeño add the cactus or nopal as we call it, and there you have a pico de gallo ready to eat with some gill meats or chicken..is healthy for diabetic people i use ith in vegetable fruits shake🤷‍♀️ also..

    The quilt blocks you see on barns across the country (and Canada) are typically part of a local "quilt trail". The trail honors pioneers and especially the women who quilted. Folks who add a quilt block to their barn usually pick a quilt block that represents their area, their farms, etc. In my area of apple ranches, wineries and Christmas tree farms, the blocks generally represent whatever they grow and sell. The owner picks the type of block, colors, and pays for the block to be made and installed. Fun!
