- The early Beatles "wall of sound" guitar style is in full force for their 1963 cover of the Marvelettes' "Please Mister Postman". George opens the guitar for the song slightly later than expected, coming in just after the vocals begin (0:01). He plays a muted A power chord then chromatically walks up from an E power chord to an F#m power chord (0:03). John joins George for the riff leading into the first verse at (0:07). For the verses, George plays riffs in-between the chord changes as leads into the next tonality. These riffs change throughout the song so look out for the differences each time through the chord progression. For example, the alternating riff leading in to the F#m at (0:10) is different than the more straightforward line at (0:26). In the first three progressions, George plays an interesting pattern into the D chord (i.e. 0:14, 0:30, 0:45) that features playing the open A string with fretted notes. He switches to direct walk-downs to the D chord for the rest of the song. To fill in the sound between these lead-ins, George down-strums eighth notes on the lower notes of the chords. George's guitar is mixed extremely quietly in the released recording and it can be difficult to hear his playing at all times, but what I play is an accurate representation of his guitar. To hear George play variations on his part more audibly, listen to the 3 BBC recordings of "Please Mister Postman".
John's rhythm guitar is an excellent example of his early rhythm style and shows his ability to perfectly place his strums. He begins the song by strumming the chords with a double down-strum on the lower notes of the chords and then playing a full down-up on the whole chord. As the song progresses, he starts to incorporate more down-up strums, especially toward the end. This suits John's vocals and lyrics' growing desperation as he begs Mister Postman to "wait a minute!" After the vocal breaks at the end of the song, John strums an A6 instead of an A chord (1:57, 2:12, 2:29). Notice how John strums the E chord at (2:24) as if there was going to be another vocal break and the continues along. Ringo's choice to hit the cymbal instead of the high hat contributes to this temporary break in sound.
George concludes the song with some lead guitar at (2:26) and bends at (2:30), just as the song is fading out.
Both guitars were played with the pickup selector switch in the middle position. John's 1958 Rickenbacker 325's unique sound is created due to the toaster pickups, natural acoustic resonance, and wiring of the tone and volume knobs. The controls allow for many different tonal settings and in "Please Mister Postman", the sound is thin in the top end yet thick in the low end due to the bridge pickup's tone knob at halfway and neck pickups tone 90% rolled off.
In the original recording, the guitars were panned totally left with considerable vocal mic room bleed of the guitar sound panned right. I recreated this by both mic'ing the guitar amp and placing a microphone in the middle of the room to pick up the amp and acoustic sound of the guitar. For ease of listening, I panned the guitar about halfway to the left instead of totally left like the original. I greatly increased the volume of George's guitar as it is nearly inaudible in the released recording.

@@elvisa.presley9652 They're good, but I prefer mattiboo. Even if they are from my country, they are a half step tuned down in their videos mostly but matt is too good.
Ably House is also pretty good
You enable me to hear George's and Johns playing. Love it
That's awesome! Their guitar parts can be hard to hear in the early recordings so I mix them loud in my videos for everyone to hear what they played. It may help going back to the original recording to hear them better after knowing what they played from my videos.
Wye are you here on the internet in 2017?
You belong in the 60s jamming along with John, Paul, George and Ringo!
Keep up the amazing work
He must be
The real 5th beatle hahaha jk
The guitar parts for this song are godly but that intro brings about world peace.
good job btw nice guitars
Ditto here but I've listened to that tune since 1964 and because of this video I isolated the guitars and George doesn't do as many walk up/downs as you did. Nice job, though.
I see you've been on a With The Beatles kick lately! Don't blame you, great album!
Thanks! I try to pair videos with songs from the same Beatles era. This time it was the With The Beatles album!
Very cleverly done. Good display of the lead and rhythm guitars working in tandem !
I really love his videos! I am learning guitar and I just love watching him play!!😊😊😊
Ella's Life... Awesome. The years slowly pass while you, I, others still kick it. Play learn or listen. It's the magic that flows in our fingers.
Be careful, one day, you might soon realize that you've been devoting all your guitar playing time to watching covers and not actually spending time on learning the guitar :p
Terrific playing with great tone. And the attention to detail in the description is amazing. Well done!
I love John's rhythm guitar in this song :D. Great cover Homie
Mattiboo you're so talented! I can't wait for more videos!
More are on the way!
Thanks for another really great video Mattiboo.
No problem man! Enjoy!
Outstanding young man! Great job!

Was waiting for this song. Love it
Thank you for waiting and I'm glad you enjoyed my cover!
Love your covers! Ive been listening to I live for you by George. Such a good slide guitar solo. Would love to see that done
Thank you for this. With such easy chords and youre great playing you make it easy for others to play along and learn just by watching you play it.. So i don't need to read the sheet music to learn it.. :)
The greatest cover I've heard
I love you so much!!!!
amazing as always
Excellent guitar playing! :)
Such great tone out of the Gretsch!
The G5120 really sounds great with both pickups going!
Fantastc , very , very nice .
Good job .
Wait, oh yes, wait a minute, Mister Postman
Wait, wai-ai-ai-ait Mister Postman
Mister Postman look and see
(Oh, yeah) Is there a letter in your bag for me?
(Please, please, Mister Postman) I been waiting a long, long time
(Oh, yeah) Since I heard from that girl of mine
There must be some word today
From my girlfriend so far away
Please, Mister Postman, look and see
If there's a letter, a letter for me
I been standing here waiting, Mister Postman
So patiently
For just a card or just a letter
Saying she's returning home to me
Mister Postman look and see
(Oh, yeah) Is there a letter in your bag for me?
(Please, please, Mister Postman) I been waiting a long, long time
(Oh, yeah) Since I heard from that girl of mine
So many days you passed me by
See the tear standing in my eye
You didn't stop to make me feel better
By leaving me a card or a letter
Mister Postman (Mister Postman), look and see
Is there a letter in your bag for me?
I been waiting a long, long time
Since I heard from that girlfriend of mine
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
Wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
Check it and see, one more time for me
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
Mister Postman, oh yeah
Deliver the letter, the sooner the better
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
You gotta wait a minute, wait a minute, oh yeah
Amazing!
Another great cover.
man I love your job
Perfect music Very good
This guy could hear the floor squeak and know to include it in the song.
PERFECT ATTENTION to detail.
Excellent
Just love that👍
I love this music 😁

Nice! Would love to see your guitar collection !
exelent 👍👏👏
Love it📻🎤
Great!
Another great cover!!! It would be amazing if you could do a cover of She Said, She Said. Thanks!
Great :)
Very good👍
Good cover, even without the bass ! The cover is augmented by using the same make of guitars that Harrison (Gretsch) and Lennon (Rickenbacker) used !
Great job man, like with all of your videos!
Just add that E7 with John's rhythm during "Since I heard from the girl of mine...."
Surprisingly, John does not play an E7 anywhere in the song. It sounds as though he should, but I confirmed that he plays a straight E chord every time!
i wish you every success in the world👍🤘
Thank you very much!
Wow i remember that vine with a post man
This is better ! You can clearly see that both guitars are following different chord patterns:
The Rick sounds EXACTLY like the record!

Thank you!
Love this dude! Can't wait for more
Also what's you're camera?
Hi Mattiboo! I love your videos and the descriptions you put so much effort into, however I am really curious how you are able to isolate the drums so well for the backing in these videos as I'd like to do covers but do not have a drum kit myself. Thanks!
I cut the mids out to remove most of the guitar while leaving in the bass and high hat. Some of the upper range of the snare is cut off but it overall sounds good with the guitars.
I would've loved to hear twist and shout on this rick it sounds thicker good job though
Aren't you interested in those songs The Beatles played in Hamburg: "Where have you been all my life", "I remember you", "Hippy hippy shake"? Thanks.
Hi,
What do you use to record your amp ?
I used and Audio-technica AT2035 on the amp and a Shure SM57 for the room sound.
Thank you.
Mattiboo um I've been watching your videos since so um, would you kindly please cover I Can Tell and Something Else by Rory Storm and The Hurricanes?
Beutiful teneseeian
How long have you been playing music? Very thorough Beatles content!
I'm trying to learn George's lead parts for this song, can you tell me what the riff is for going from F#m to D and then the riff from D to E?
Thanks Mattiboo, love your work.
There are variations throughout the song, but they are both on the A string. The F#m to D goes A: 4 0 4 2 0. The D to E goes A: 4 3 2.
nice
Nowhere Man next please as a full band. Would love to see that. Thanks
You should do sun king 👑☀️man love that song
Beatles 🙌🏻
So both George and John are playing a F# but with George with the Bar chord and John with the different hand position? Seem john doesn't like bar chords as much!
That is how they played it in the only video of them miming to "Please Mister Postman"!
I must ask, how do you so precisely copy the recording? Where do you get every detail? Do you just listen on repeat until you have written down every nook and cranny?
Amazing work as usual!
That's exactly it! I delve into the studio recording and examine every facet of the sound by separating stereo channels and other methods. I then listen to every live/alternate recording I can find to gather anecdotal evidence to support my theory on what they played in the studio. The process takes some time but it is well worth it to capture The Beatles great guitar playing!
mattiboo that's incredible, and I deeply admire your enthusiasm about such subtle things in these songs.
You have some of the highest quality content on RUclips, and I will continue to watch as you produce.
Great Cover! Hi Matti, i was wondering if you would please make lessons.I know you describe alot in the description but i really don't understand as much!
What type of picks would you use for George harrisons bit am trying to get identical sound to the beatles.
But you do it so god dam good
I don't think picks matter
I love the beatles
Would be amazing of you to cover Tomorrow Never knows
Awesome video!
I'm going to get a Epiphone Casino next week and im really excited! I have one question, is the sound different on a Casino than a Fender Strat?
Great video! Keep on rocking!
The Casino and Strat sound very different! The Strat's single coil pickups make for a much brighter sound with lower output while the P90s on the Casino provide a thick, high output sound for better overdrive tones. The three pickups on the Strat allow for combinations that will make sounds that no other guitar can achieve. Similarly, the Strat is a solid body guitar while the Casino is semi hollow. This means that the Casino will have a richer tone than the Strat.
mattiboo I believe that the Casino is a hollow-body guitar.
The Casino is a hollow body guitar and current reissues have the same broad D shape neck as the Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro. I never got a Casino because I don't like the neck.
@@joellebrodeur1015 Gibson slimed down the Epiphone Casino neck width late 1964 model because they were out selling the Gibson 330 models
Hi mattiboo,
Love the vids man great work!
I was just wondering what the chord from 0:13 to 0:15 is called?

mattiboo thanks so much man! Keep up the incredible work! 😘
eres grande
Nice job....Where did you find the Phillips head modification for your Bigsby? Thanks
Do do you want to know a secret, we can work it out and nowhere man😊
Doo doo
I got a question for you i recently got a new rickenbacker 325c64 it's great but my g string buzzes I was wondering if your 325c64 ever buzzed before
Congrats on your new 325! The D string on mine did buzz quite a bit and it was due to the design of the roller bridge. If you look under the protective cover of the bridge, you will see that each string has a metal block with a roller on which the string rests. If your G string block is not in line with the other blocks, it will vibrate since there is nothing to prevent side to side motion. Try setting the intonation on your guitar to see if the G string block is in the incorrect location. My D string was a little off so I moved the roller back in line with the other rollers and the buzzing stopped.
Hey Mattiboo can you do " sweet little sixteen "
Do you have a chet atkins country gentleman? Just wondering because I am sure he used it for this song
I have a Gretsch G5120, but I'm confident that George used the Country Gent on this one.
I have a question, I’ve noticed John and even in this video, the F# Major barre chord, John plays with his pinky and doesn’t barre the 2nd fret. Is there a reason why? Or just a different technique?
Are you talking about wrapping the thumb around to get the F# on the low E? That is just a different, slightly easier, method of playing a barre chord. The second fret is barred for the G, B, and high E strings.
@@mattiboo I gotcha, so you are wrapping the thumb to grab the F# on the low E, then you are barring with your index finger the G, B, and E strings. You middle finger isn't doing anything is it? It's hard to tell, but that is a cool technique! I'll have to give it a try! Thanks!
Your description don't go unnoticed. Do you plan on getting any new gear in the future?
There is never a plan for that!
What's the chord after "A"? I'm about to play this with my Strat.
F#m. Best wishes for you playing!
mattiboo That was quick! Anyway, thank you. Best wishes for your channel.
Great cover, what amp do you use for the Gretsch? Thanks.
Vox AC15C1.
mattiboo cheers
You got tabs for those walkdowns?
Picking up on all those details you point out, I.M.O. marks the difference between an amateur and a PROFESSIONAL player. I don't consider it to be "pedantic" as others have commented on other posts, hinting that players who know these details are too fussy.
I agree. I think showing a high amount of detail ensures that any skill level player, from the beginner to Beatles expert, learns something from these videos.
I want a rickenbacker 325 but I think the only songs I'd play on it would be Beatle songs tho, I can't really imagine someone playing other songs besides beatles songs on a 325 ( except for John Fogerty of CCR)
Very true! While the 325 is very strong for early Beatles music, it really does not have much of a place in other styles or eras of music.
I do adore the short scale for easier access but it's got a sound that would only fit Beatles music unlike a casino or a strat or even a tele wherein they could be used in multiple playing styles or eras. A rick 12 like yours would be usable for writing and recording too

How much did that gretsch cost???

Could you give us a short video showing how you record your videos, particularly the split screen..................

How do u play without bass?
Anyone from Montclair CA?
Hey Mattiboo aren't you thinking of disconnecting the middle pickup? Just like Lennon's 325
I don't really believe that John had any special wiring done on his 1958 325 during the hitmaking years. I believe after he had it painted late 1962 by a truck driver the wiring got changed. In the summer of 1963, John had the guitar taken to Burns in London and the wiring was fixed along with some minor cosmetic changes. Since Please Please Me was recorded before the guitar was painted and With The Beatles was recorded after the wiring was fixed to original Rickenbacker wiring, I have concluded that the original Rickenbacker wiring (which Ric spent a lot of time on in the 325C58 to be authentic to the original) is the most accurate for capturing John's recorded tone.
Those who sell special looms claiming to replicate John's wiring have no idea what his wiring was during the period between late 1962 and summer 1963. It doesn't even matter, as John recorded very little to nothing with this incorrect wiring. The stock Rickenbacker wiring is how John's 1958 325 was wired during all studio recording sessions, therefore it is what I use.
mattiboo I've read that his middle pickup was damaged by some unknown cause either his heavy strumming in their Hamburg years so he'd disconnected his middle pickup, but thanks for the many facts
This page seems to be the original source of the statement that John disconnected his middle pickup (article by Glen Lambert, maker of so called accurate loom). He even admits that the disconnection has not been confirmed. There is no hard proof that John's middle pickup was disconnected and we will probably never know for certain that it was during the early '60s.
@@mattiboo Ricks toaster style pickups where wound much differently during the 60's era verses the the 80's and beyond . The late John Hall admitted to
that fact in a Vox Talks discussion back in the late 1990's. I have a 90's Rick 360 V64 guitar thats has modified toasters that were unwound to 60's specs more
vintage sounds without the low mids jumping out at you. A lot more jangle ..
@@mattiboo John had quite an ear for tone as he sanded the finish off of his Casino ..
What model is your rickenbacker?
325C58
Hey Mattiboo what are the settings on your amp?
Vox AC15C1, treble 2/3, bass 1/2, volume 1/2 (low pickup output on both guitars), reverb 0 as all reverb was captured with a room microphone.
Where can I get tabs
bottom is John ? Top is George
ken carr yes
Dude your a god you should get a country gentlemen!!!!!!!!!!!!💕👍🏻
Mattiboo since you're focusing on early Beatle songs I noticed can you do "all I've gotta do"
Exelente video you really are good, could you play i want you in the following video?
