My mom has had an X5 40i xdrive since 2020, and I like it so much I'd consider buying a CPO one. Two things I dont like about the GX. First, lots of truck like body roll. Seeing you take some of those corners reminded me of my Ranger Tremor that I traded for a Honda Passport for a more refined driving experience. I dont think I could go in the opposite direction again in terms of driving refinement. Second, the windowsill arm rest is practically non-existent. That's where I usually rest my left arm/elbow, and in the GX it's like half an inch wide... Not very comfortable, reminds me of my 2010 Acura RDX. Strange design because the Land Cruiser sibling has a nice wide one, and the GX460 did too.
I just finished a 10 hr trip to the red river gorge in KY in my 2024 BMW X5 M60 and drove off road to get to cabin every day. No issues and got 24 mpg in a 525 bhp V8 that is faster and handles better than GX. That tank and MPG is so low in the GX.
Well the M60 isn't the on the same level, so that's not a fair comparison. The GX doesn't have that performance and it's not trying too.. This GX handled great for the mountain roads we took it on. MPG isn't as good which is surprising, but X5 or GX are both great options.
So I'm used to my BMW X4 and Lexus 350.........both have very good pickup and quiet. I thought the GX I drove today had a good bit of engine noise on acceleration.....and some road noise. Maybe because we had no radio on, etc. but seemed to remind of the louder engine whine I used to have in my 4Runner........like it was straining a little. You guys ok with the engine and is the noise noticeable with radio on like normal??
I have a 2024 X5 50e and I haven’t noticed fan noise while charging. It’s hot here in NM as well. I rarely need to get gas, love that and in full electric so quiet. I like the GX but I wish I liked the interior more. And I wish the panoramic sunroof opened.
As a non-truck-frame vehicle ("crossover"), the X5 is expected to have MUCH better driving manners, ride comfort and NVH compared to a car like the GX. They are inherently different products so it comes down to what you really want in a car. If it's a daily driver used for commuting, a CUV will always be the more luxurious choice compared to a similarly priced truck-frame SUV.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed oh for sure. I myself would choose the LC or GX550 too. Great cars, I just don’t expect them to be ride and handle better than CUVs like the X5, dollar for dollar.

I’m going to be in market soon for new wheels. Good video. X5 and GX on my radar. Had x5 years ago. Could have been my favorite suv I’ve ever had except reliability I’m convinced w bmw once you hit 60-70k miles someone in Germany presses a button and the car starts bleeding oil or something. I’ve been reading where the new x5 reliability has improved a lot is that safe to say? I’m in sales so I drive a lot and don’t want a gas guzzling cumbersome vehicle either. The gx looks beautiful but again new drivetrain engine etc. long term reliability unknown right now I guess.
Yeah I think 2020 and up the X5 is pretty solid. I believe it's number 1 in reliability in its class. We'll be selling ours before the warranty expires tho. I don't trust the hybrid system past that. But if we go X5 again I won't get a hybrid. So we'll see but the GX might be what we go with!
@@paulbugoni2846 well, like I said in my video, swapping the X5 for the GX is our plan. X5 is certainly nice, but can’t tow as much or offroad, so they each have different styles for what works for the buyer..
@@paulbugoni2846In what the SUV race Grand Prix? The Lexus tows 9000 lbs, has full time 4wd, a center locker, a rear locker, sway bar disconnect, Lexus reliability. Whereas the BMW is a short term lease for wanna be rich posers.
@@johnpotter4210 Lexus reliability isn’t what it used to be; you need to get the overtrail to get the 9k towing capacity which means you lose the 3rd row seats. Comparing the non Overtrail models to the X5 you have the same 8.7 inch ground clearance and 8k towing capacity vs. The BMW’s 7200lbs. Yes the Lexus is better off road and towing but the BMW wins everywhere else.
I drove these 2 back to back the x5 handles way better than the GX. And comparing the mpg, Lexus miss the mark on this one. I currently have a RX350 have about to have baby #2 might look at x7 (if money is no object). But Grand Highlander or TX is something that fit the bill for me.
X7 is a cool choice! We've had a TX as a press vehicle. Very nice family SUV. Roomy and comfortable and pretty efficient. That'd be a good choice. I like the GX for its utility, towing and off roading. So it'd be a bit different use then the X5 being primarily a road vehicle.
You have seem to bought a used 2022 X5 50e plug-in hybrid. If you had the X5 m40i, there’s no way a GX550 would hold a candle to the BMW but these are apples to oranges comparison. The BMW is truly a performance vehicle . The GX550 is a truck. As for luxury, not a chance a Lexus compares.
Yeah, I bought a used one, I said that in the video.. Only certain X5 models are performance oriented. This hybrid isn’t really that..so it depends on the model you buy.. But yes, as far as luxury they are very similar…this is coming from both of us after having it a week and owning the X5. It’s another luxury brand that competes with bmw.. And I’ve filmed plenty of X5’s from 40i, m60 and M Comp. I have a ton of X5 experience with the whole line
