Casa Pakaal is a beautifully restored historic house from the early 20th century, located in one of Mérida's oldest neighborhoods, Santiago. The project, led by Workshop Diseño y Construcción, balances the preservation of its original features with contemporary design. Upon entering, the house showcases a high-ceilinged corridor with original wooden beams and a custom-designed floor pattern. The restored living room highlights a painting by Pedro Friedeberg. A seamless blend of old and new materials defines the rest of the house, with the kitchen retaining its original walls while incorporating modern touches like a custom-made kitchen and pasta tile floors. Outdoor spaces, including a terrace with a wood-fired oven, overlook a chukum-finished pool and a tzalam wood deck that floats above the water, framed by the surrounding greenery. In the private section, five rooms are distributed around existing trees, maintaining a respect for the natural environment. The guest area is the only two-story section, and the master bedroom offers direct views of the pool and gardens. Casa Pakaal’s design honors the home’s historical roots while integrating modern aesthetics, creating a harmonious balance between past and present.
