I Didn't Think This Was Possible - Zhiyun Molus X100 & G60 Review

  • Zhiyun decided to ask the question, "How small can you make a 100 Watt video light?" and the answer was the Molus X100 and just for kicks, they also made the G60. Squeezing all that power into such a small package has to come with some compromises, though, so we'll go through it all to see just how these tiny little lights stack up against some big competition.

    Already used the x100 on a wedding and 2 small video shoots, the size is really so appreciated. For the wedding reception, I wish I had the light-dome to light the make-up and prep shots; for the video shoots, I was running around with a 60cm softbox and for a couple of shots, it was even handheld with softbox & adapter.
    One thing I didn't like about the x100 is the price, it is rather pricey especially the combo kit and that tiny softbox (ZY mount) is around USD50 if bought separately... lightdome is around USD30. Hopefully the prices will go down a little, right now it feels like Zhiyun is charging a premium for the "latest and greatest".
    BTW, my x100 works with the bluetooth app although it was still a bit temperamental until I updated the app to the latest version.
    Nice video, Wes. Your review is a lot more thorough than most other RUclips reviews.. Being an engineer in my previous life, I appreciate those details especially the electronic/electrical ones.

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  Год назад +1

      Yeah, seems normal these days to get the profit on the accessories. The tiny soft box really doesn’t serve much purpose in my books. That battery is clutch, but also pretty pricey.
      And I was also an engineer in the beforetimes. I was just looking at a Sekonic C800 for these videos because I need more hard data… but I really don’t make enough on RUclips to justify it 😂😭
      One of these days…

      Did you test the light output with the softbox vs. the dome diffuser? I wonder which one is brighter? Asking before I purchase the dome. Thanks!

    I was surprised at 100. It’s small and even at low % it is pretty bright. I wish it was a little cheaper or I would have bought another one right away. It’s pretty brilliant with the fan design.

    The real cost of the X100 if you want the accessories like the mount, reflector brings it to 400$, while different story then.

    I liked seeing it vs the ML60. Would love a full video comparison of them vs their larger but same wattage counterparts

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  Год назад

      In my mind this beats the ML60 in almost every way. More modern COB LED with better colour, smaller and lighter form factor, they both have a somewhat annoying proprietary mount (although it's easier to mount the ML60 in an S2 bracket for a larger modifier), the X100 is much easier to power on battery, as you can do the battery built for it, Or USB C, Or DC input from the same sort of battery sled that the ML60 sometimes ships with, and it has Bluetooth connectivity.

    • @burgunbeerd
      @burgunbeerd Год назад +1

      Does the X100 come with a COB Cover? It seems so exposed

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  Год назад +2

      Haha that was the last thing I mentioned in the video as my biggest gripe. It does not 😑
      It does have a glass plate over the COB, but I’d still much rather have a little snap on protector!
      I suspect they Don’t have one because it would be small and easy to miss, and would melt down in no time if it was left on while operating. There is a bit of a near field heat problem with this, due to its tiny form factor. But some sort of a fail safe switch inside the mount found fairly easily overcome this possibility.

      @@WesPerry yes you did sorry! I would love to know how the X100 compares to the new Aperture MCpro once they're both slightly diffused. I'm in the market for a light that size and am looking for the best powerful but small but at least some what soft light. Big shoes to fill for my small backpack

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  Год назад +1

      They’re not really in the same category at all. The Molus even when diffused will still be 10-20x brighter than the MC Pro

  • @paulgero

    Wes how do you think these x100 Molus will work for wedding videographers? Any ways to put a fresnel on it other than a big Bowens version?
    Thank you for the solid review!

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  Год назад +1

      I think it could be amazing for wedding photogs. Especially if they decide to expand the options for the mount (as godox more or less failed to do with their Godox mount). Having to put it on the Bowens bracket makes it so much larger, but even so still quite light and compact. The versatility when it comes to powering it is key for me, as well as the “bagability” - with the removable battery it fits almost anywhere. But the need for a modifier of some kind definitely kills that a bit.
      Will have to investigate the best way of adding something focusable like a fresnel attachment as you say.

  • @GeologyDude
    @GeologyDude 3 месяца назад

    I'm going for the Sirui, b/c it has a full size Bowen's mount and a reasonable amount of other features--including better battery options. Although it is wonderful to have a light so compact, if you are forced to pay extra to add a proper size mount and other features to make it whole, well, those add-ons increases size and cost and negates the small size advantage. The size creates an awkward feature set that compromise what you can do with it. The cute diffuser size is mostly useless--except for small product photography--or for use as an expensive prop.

    Awesome review... Wes Perry...
    Can i use the Zhiyun X100 with a V-mount Battery?

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  Год назад +1

      Yes and no?
      The DC input requires 24V, and v-mount usually can’t do that. BUT it also can be powered via usb c PD, and I have two v mount batteries with outputs that can do that. It just can’t get it up to full output power, though.

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  Год назад +1

      Haha I can’t really tell you That, but the 60 is versatile in ways that the Molus lights are not. The light quality likely isn’t any different, just a matter of choosing what form factor works best for you. While the 60 is larger, it’s also built like a tank, much unlike these.

      You can yes, you just can’t get 100% output when powered over usb c

    • @WesPerry
      @WesPerry  6 месяцев назад

      If you mean the X100 then yes, it’s the same mount.
      The only difference is with the stock reflector. The one recommended for the X100 has a bit of a neck on it and is smaller, to allow more airflow due to the flow through design of the light body.
