The story at the end was funny. Reminds me that my grandmother (ca. 1910) tripped and fell on to cactus while doing missionary work with Hopi. Apparently they thought it was hysterical and laughed at her. I assume they eventually helped her. She was fine.

During your discussion of the mammillaria two species were named (zellmanniana and bocasana). Then you called about a variety that has a long bloom cycle, but I couldn’t tell which species has that long bloom cycle. I have nejapensis in flower now, and I’m curious if it flowers for a long time, or what variety does have a long flower cycle? Thank you for any information you can provide.

I'm not sure if he was referring to one or both, but in our nursery, both M. zeilmanniana and M. bocasana exhibit long bloom seasons, with zeilmanniana being slightly more prolific in its quantity of flowers.

I should also say, M. karwinskiana ssp. nejapensis is not especially floriferous compared to other Mammillaria. Decent blooms, but not an extra long season. It's more distinctive for the extra long spines (2"+) it develops with age.

Powder Puff (M. bocasana) has longer wool and fishhook spines, like this: mountaincrestgardens.com/mammillaria-bocasana-powder-puff-cactus/
The spines on Old Lady Cactus (M. hahniana) are straight, like this: www.llifle.com/Encyclopedia/CACTI/Family/Cactaceae/22358/Mammillaria_hahniana
