    So sorry Lyn.. so sad that you lost this old, majestic plant, and heartbreaking to hear this is one that you are especially attached to! In any case, thanks very much for sharing it with us, because as sad as it is, it is also educational to see a video of how different types of decay in a plant can look. For those of us with less experience and less plants, it's a way to learn. The bottom part looks very strange indeed: Tim said it reminded him of the type of mould on an orange, but to me it looks like the type of mould on blue cheese. Looks like something that's been a while in the making.. Hopefully someone will see this video and will be able to identify what it is exactly and how it could have happened. I hope Lucy can comfort you!

    This has happened to me twice i reckon it from sometimes your cactus can be a bit woody inside, and if you left a wooden sweeping brush out in the wet for example it would have mould, so could the gel from the cactus make the woody part constantly wet causing the mould. 😮😮😮🎉🎉❤❤

    Hey Lynn! I’m really sorry to hear this!!! I too have lost so many plants from a Coldsnap I had in early November I wasn’t expecting. The temperatures went down to 10°F, so I started moving all of my plants in which obviously took a few hours, but I had planned on keeping them in my enclosed patio like I did the year before, and just lighting fires in the wood-burning stove when It would get very cold, but I didn’t have fire with me at the time and wasn’t prepared, so after moving them all inside, I immediately started seeing cold damage within a week or 2, and now that it is spring more and more continue to die! I probably have lost half of my collection! So I know how you feel, that’s very sad! Even worse, my plants suffered from being inside without all the light they are used to! They actually did very well the previous year, when I would go out there and light a fire, I just didn’t feel like having to do that this year, so all of the plants that didn’t make it are stretched and look weird, because they were starved for light. I had them all by the windows, but I guess it still wasn’t enough light! So I suspect I will have more losses as time goes by! I am hoping though, that when I move them outside for good, this spring, that they will grow compact again?? do you know if they will? I had moved them outside but moved them back in because we were having nighttime temperatures in the low 40s again this week.! and I am wondering when I should start watering?! I was thinking about putting them outside today because we are having some rain and they haven’t had water all winter! But we are still having nighttime temperatures in the low 40s do you think it’s OK to do the first watering? Our daytime temperatures are in the 70s? I looked for your videos to see if you did your spring watering yet. I just hate to lose more plants! And I am so nervous with everything that’s already happened! And again I’m sorry to see that you’ve lost so many as well !!Sending you love 💕❤️- Anna

    The very fuzzy spiny cacti like that that are saturated with needles are very water sensitive. I Water Mine only once a year in the middle of summer. I will only water it again if it does not look plump and smooth. Cacti in general go dormant in the winter and should not be watered at all.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  Год назад

      So sorry to hear that the babies have hollowed out on your cactus Mary, I am not sure why this happens but it can be due the babies staying too wet around them when watering, if a small amount of water stays n between the babies around the Mother plant it can cause them to rot and die off, I notice this seems to happen the most on Mammillaria and mine often get the babies die off or go hollow too even though I am very careful with the watering, as long as the Mother plant is ok they usually will re grow them again, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a sunny Sunday XXXX

    I’m sorry, Lyn. I have a optunia cylindrical cristiata. I had it outside and we had a day of bad flooding In Florida and it got really wet. I noticed a small piece of rotting on the bottom side that turned black and mushy. I cut the black part out and I put cinnamon on it. I hope it heals. I wondered if I should put a band aid on it. I put it in a terra contta pot and bottom water it only. I won’t buy optunia variegated anymore, because I have so much trouble with scales and they die on me. I use alcohol and it takes it off, but then they die.

    So sad you lost your plant. A friend of mine had some bugs nest and breed in her cactus. I believe it was either spiders or scorpions. And when all the babies were ready to hatch, they all came out through a similar hole that you have on yours. Her cactus also perished in that incident. So it could be a similar situation with your mammillaria.

      So sorry to hear you lost your Cactus too Lewis, the only way it can be saved by replanting is if there is still some of the cactus left that has no rot or mold, they can be saved by cuttings if the middle of the core of the cactus is clear, but when the rot has spread throughout its impossible to save it, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday today XXXX

    My guess would be that the orange rot is soil borne. That the blue/white mould is a secondary pathogen that is colonizing the dead tissue and that the hole simply resulted from the weight of the top of the plant pulling the rest of the plant down. With no internal cellular structure left, it simply tore a hole in the side of the plant.
    I would be looking into the use of grittier growing media as well as beneficial soil microbes and having greater air circulation around the plants.

I am lucky to live somewhere with a climate that permits me to have them outdoors all year round so I'm always impressed by the dedication of those of you in colder climates in keeping these plants alive and how much extra time it must take to grow large plants compared to warmer climates.

    I do not know if you apply fungicides on a regular basis, but it has to be done. Unfortunately, fungus are omnipresent and are there to consume our precious plants at any time. Mark your calendar and schedule regular fungicide applications together with an insecticide every 3 months. Rotate chemicals periodically to avoid resistance. There are many products out there in the market, I cannot recommend one, you can go to any store that specializes in products for orchids and there you can find anything you will need, for sure. It is very difficult to have a healthy collection without the help of chemicals nowadays. I learned that from a hard lesson 3 years ago when a fungal infection decimated my collection by 70%.

    Sorry you’ve lost this one Lynn ! I’ve lost lots of plants both indoors and out with our extreme weather last year - we had extreme prolonged cold temps plus extreme heat in the Summer ?! Like you some of my plants are just dying back now 😩😬🤞🌿

    So sorry, Lyn! I have had several (much smaller, younger ones) that looked the same. If you figure out what caused this, please share so
    we can all learn from it. Thanks. And again, sorry for your loss.
