Jaipur is a city in Northern India, which is the capital of its Rajasthan region. One of India’s largest, it is known as the Pink City due to the colour of its buildings. Although, if we’re being technical, it’s actually terracotta. Its centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, much of which was constructed in the eighteenth century.
The City Palace is our first stop and it’s the centrepiece of the city. Now here’s something that totally blew our minds, did you know that India’s maharajas totally still exist? So in the days before the British Empire, India was divided into many kingdoms, each of which had a maharaja. But these were never defeated or deposed; they just continued to exist but with less power. And that continues to this day. And the maharaja of Jaipiur is one of the most famous. Firstly, that might be to do with his enormous wealth and amazing palace, which includes the world famous blue room. It’s so blue that even the sky is jealous. But secondly, it’s because the maharaja is one of the world’s most eligible bachelors. Aged only 25, he is unmarried and a professional polo player. Educated in the UK, he’s known as Pacho to his friends and has his own RUclips Channel.
Janta Manta is one of the world’s most impressive stone observatories. Built in the eighteenth century, it was built because the maharaja of the time was really into his astronomy. And he wanted the best instruments for his hobby in the world. Containing the largest sundial in the world, it measures time by the second, predicts eclipses, tracks the stars and calculates long division. The last bit’s a lie.
One of Jaipur’s most famous sights is the Amber Fort. Nowadays, palaces can sit in the middle of cities without the need for fortification, but back in the days of constantly warring kingdoms, a palace also had to be a fortress. So on the outside, this is a vast castle, perched high on the hill above the town. And on the inside, it’s a lavish palace. You can climb the hill on foot... or ascend on the back of elephant. Set across four levels, this sprawling complex housed the maharaja and his many wives.
The Amber Fort sits in the small town of Amer on the edge of Jaipur. At the top of a ridge, it is the last in a series of forts that run across its top that were built and owned by various maharajas. Some are heavily fortified, while others are much more ornate. Jaipur famously had a long-standing rivalry with the kingdom of Jodhpur and its leaders were always trying to invade each other, hence all the fortifications. Famously, there was one princess who was so beautiful that the maharajas of the two kingdoms fought over her for years and she was captured back and forth between them. The war raged for so long and with such savagery that it was decided that the best thing to do to stop the bloodshed wasn’t to shake hands and make up... Oh no. It was to kill her.
While Jaipiur is a very pretty city, it’s just as crazy as the rest of India. There are people, mopeds and cows in every direction you look.So if you love absolute but effective chaos, you’ll love it here. Just don’t expect adherence to the Highway Code. And the best thing of all? The curries.
On the outskirts of the city is this remarkable temple complex. Dedicated to the god Hanuman, it is completely overrun with monkeys. Five thousand of them, infact. And seeing as Hanuman is the monkey god, it’s almost like they planned it. One of the most popular deities in the Hindu pantheon, Hanuman is known as a protector, aided by his monkey army.
Our final stop was the one I was looking forward to the most. A step-well used as a filming location in the Dark Knight franchise, this is essentially just an elaborate water source. Dating from the ninth century, it has 3,500 steps going down thirteen storeys into the well. But its geometry and scale is just remarkable and you can see why post-Inception Christopher Nolan was all over this spot like gays at a Lady Gaga concert.
