A lot of Christians have grown up in a world where they have gotten special preferential treatment. That their holidays are considered the standard normal ones, and that other people's holidays don't get respected as much.
And if you are used to having gotten special treatment your whole life, going back to regular treatment with everyone else feels like a punishment. It feels like you're being attacked.
Our society is changing very quickly, and a lot of people are having trouble adapting because they have grown up with special treatment in many cases. And it's difficult for them to realize that's what's going on, because they don't think that they've had special treatment. They thought that was just normal. But now people are asking you to say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas, to be nice to people who aren't Christian. The things they took for granted as normal aren't being treated normally anymore, and if you have a hard time with big changes in your life, you will lash out in response.
So there's a lot of people who are frustrated at how the world is changing and are using the fact that something that they felt was innocent and pure like Christmas is now somehow inappropriate to say sometimes as an example of what they are frustrated at.

my only thing i disagree with is that nobody is asking anyone to say happy holidays instead of merry christmas. people are just saying it, some people have always said it too. everything else tho is just true.
Good post. But I think it’s important to note that Christians STILL receive a metric shit-ton of preferential treatment, especially politically and in the courts. In fact, one could argue that Christian favoritism has become even MORE overt in recent years. For example, unlike the Supreme Court under Warren, the current Court rules in favor of Christians 85% of the time. In addition to that, multimillion dollar megachurches are still inexplicably tax exempt despite being overtly political. Oh! And very few Catholic priests and almost NO higher church officials have been held accountable for molesting children or for covering it up. So, that’s some pretty heavy preferential treatment right there. Plus, the Arizona State Supreme Court recently ruled that the Mormon Church doesn’t have to report sexual abuse to the authorities. They’re exempt for “religious reasons” FFS.
Hundreds of millions of tax dollars are also funneled to Christian schools and Christian anti-science facilities. And let’s not forget that Roe v Wade was overturned in order to accommodate Christian zealots, despite the fact that antiabortion laws violate the Constitution AND the religious beliefs & deeply held convictions of millions of people who aren’t Christian fundamentalists.
Anyway, I think fair to say that even though holiday greetings may have changed somewhat (not that anyone is required to say “Happy Holidays”), Christians still receive immense preferential treatment… and arguably even more of it than in the past.

i think the conversation about what makes art “good” is really interesting; it’s not trauma that makes art good, but i think that art is only “breaking the boundaries” when it and its creator recognize the humanity in all people.. i think that’s what hasan was getting at when he said good artists have emancipatory feelings-art made by oppressors and those that aid them are rigid because they have a hierarchy to enforce; art made by those who see humanity in all are free to explore far more than the reactionary.
Really good point. People with an emancipatory mindset are more likely to be curious about other people and this can lead to very interesting art, but oppressor mindset artists often have a flattened perspective of people in order to justify oppression. For them, it’s counter productive to be curious about the lives of others.
beat me to it lol, but yes exactly. hasan was kinda close, but i definitely think it's more about empathy/humanity. artists who can be empathetic to others and see different experiences and worldviews will nearly always make more meaningful art. conservatives work against that so their art is bad and tone deaf

Now the Christians know what it felt like when they ended pagan holidays in Europe. Wait - except that Christians can still have Christmas and their religion
well they didn't, maybe other than in imperial rome at the height of christianization where the big traditions of Saturnalia was ended as maybe the first public holiday ever. There were a shitton of celebrations with roots in pagan traditions untill at least the early modern age.
Reformation and Puritanism came with the first really big cultural and legal push against heathen rites - so much so that the English Puritans literally banned christmas and eastern as heathen, along with any music other than singing in church. You know, the exact people who then became the settlers of the US, after they were pushed out of power and their theocratic tyranny in england ended.
the funniest part of this for me is some christian child raised by the people who want to watch these movies will grow up having the same nostalgia for these movies as most of us do for films like Home Alone, Elf, or the Santa Clause. And that, my friends, is the funniest thought I've had all month.

As a retail worker instead of wishing people merry christmas or happy holidays I wait for them to say whichever first and then I say what they said back to me so no body can get mad. We have a big boomer population who would get mad if I say happy holidays buy theres also a lot of young immigrants in my area who won't complain but I don't want to exclude them so this feels like the best solution.
