    Early 1987 - as a 17 y.o. in awe with BB's drumming, I went over Ronnie Scotts (London) to see if I could get a cheaper ticket to watch his Earthworks debut concert. It was mid-afternoon, no one seemed to be there. All of sudden, one car stops right in front of the club. A very polite voice asks me: "Would you mind helping to unload my gear?" Surely enough, I got my way in as a casual "roadie" for the man himself... And yes, that was a killer concert!

      I read that BR never rehearsed, just showed up live and nailed it. It could be just a legend about a legend, but if it's true it gives him the edge. BR's a bit before my time and BB may never have been on his radar.

    I cannot understand the people coming to this comments section to disparage Bruford's performance. Aren't we all drummers? He did a masterful job, and he's been, for 40-odd years, his own man, doing something unique always, and with impeccable technique and chops. If you don't like it, fine, but there's no need to talk bad about him. He's the shit. There are few drummers in the rock/popular music world that can hold a candle to what he's accomplished.

    Despite the negativity spewed forth below by a few elitists and malcontents, I think Bill is absolutely fantastic here. Enjoyable to watch and to listen to. He's a drummers drummer, exhibiting a level a maturity and musicianship that the vast vast majority of us could ever hope to achieve. Thanks for the video.

    • @mikesdrumshop2887
      @mikesdrumshop2887  6 лет назад +19

      Despite what most of these jagoffs comment about Bill's playing these are the same people who have not worked professionally because they believe that the drummer is most important. What is most important is the song. You have to play what is appropriate for the song. This is not the type of song that call for blazing solos throughout.

    Man, a lot of people who are commenting on this video know nothing about Bill Bruford. The overall consensus seems to be "Bruford can't swing." You're saving this and you've heard him in Yes and King Crimson and whoever. He made King Crimson swing for crying out loud. He made Yes swing. His early influences are Art Blakey, Max Roach, and Joe Morello. His band Earthworks consisted of English jazz musicians. Just because he's not doing Buddy Rich-like acrobatics on the drums doesn't mean squat. How long do y'all think he had to prepare for this recording? I guarantee that the members of Buddy's band loved having someone mature enough to keep solid time during this jazz waltz.

    • @linkone11
      @linkone11 8 лет назад +26

      +drewper73 You could not be more right; Bruford is a historian of the masters before him, plus he is the very definition of the progressive rock drummer, Yes, Crimson, even played with Genesis for a while

    This is without question, for me, the best of all the Burning for Buddy performances (or maybe a very close 2nd place to Joe Morello’s, I was at that concert live and it was unforgettable). Why? Because Bruford-as always-takes a completely unique approach; he leaves space and gaps and lets the music breathe where most other drummers would fill in and try to make some sort of heroic statement. He just supports, & allows the music to speak. He’s a genius, actually. A brilliant mind.

    Bill explains the situation in his book. It was high pressure on all drummers involved ! There were two hours for setting up the drums,soundcheck,rehearse the tune once and record it. The studio seemed to Bill like a dentist's office. So,under these coditions ,in front of the 16 men 'Big band' , he had to show up ....what fun ! And big relief after.

      Part of his style is definitely how light he hits the drums. Remind of Roy Haynes or Jack Dejohnette in that way.

    • @KirkSandall
      @KirkSandall Год назад

      @Dave Vallelunga Exactly, When he first joined Yes, he was told they were a jazz band. Indeed, some of their early songs were jazz-ish; you can even hear Bill swinging on "I See You" e.g.. And King Crimson was a hard rock band influenced by to an extent by jazz. Bill swings like crazy on KC's "Requiem" from _Beat._ He's stated his biggest influences were Max Roach, Joe Morello, and Art Blakey. But you can hear an influence from free jazz guys like Tony Oxley, too, whom he called a laboratory drummer. Bill was a jazz drummer who got sidetracked by progressive rock.

    Bill Bruford is one of the few drummers who can still hurt my head . He can be playing 4/4 and then playing along you realise something does not feel right and it is because he has switched to playing on the and then back to on the beat then on the e . He really works hard but I think sometimes you have to be a drummer to understand this. Excellence

    • @timbeaton5045
      @timbeaton5045 4 года назад +6

      Not a drummer, me, but a (sadlly) not very good bass player, but Bill is/was a consummate player who could swing with style in a jazz band, or push the boundaries with electronic drums, with King Crimson, or Yes. Not many could cover the range that the did. Also the writer of three albums of excellent music with Alan Holdsworth, Jeff Berlin, et al. These people worked with the best, and BB should be counted in that number. And having met him briefly once, a nice guy, to boot. We could do with more like him.

      @M L It was more about his seamless transition through different time signatures. I was not specifically applying it back to the vid. If anything what was in my head was an early Yes song which is in 5/4 Roundabout. Apologies for any confusion.

  • @Jpeterson7
    @Jpeterson7 5 лет назад +6

    To go from pop to prog to this, quite an achievement. He left the easy money so many times just to become a more well-rounded musician. Gotta respect that. I usually don't watch complete jazz tunes because it's not my thing but I liked this whole tune. The song is full from the start and builds throughout. The solos are great and tight, they don't meander about endlessly. Good swing to it.

    He´s my favourite drummer and I learned from him the real importance of a drummer in a band. I remember when I started to play that I was very into the 4/4 kind of straight rock groove and all of a sudden I listened to this guy drumming and said WTF??? What the hell is he doing with the kit?? Is he from another planet?? His drumming blew me away....and l became a big fan. I met him years ago in a drum clinic in Vancouver and had the chance to talk to him. Not only an awesome drummer but also such a nice guy. In my opinion his drumming here is impeccable.

    This is the perfect Bill Bruford interpretation. He brings his own percussive interpretation for an absolutely “spot on” performance. I’ve had the good fortune to see Bruford perform live on many occasions. First with “Yes”, then several times with “King Crimson”, then “UK”, then with “Anderson, Bruford Wakeman and Howe” and finally with “Earthworks”. His drumming is always creative, fluid, inspirational and unique. This performance is no exception. Bravo!

    At best, Bill Bruford is under-rated. Just incredible how smooth he is and how obviously his roots are jazz. Great, great drummer.

    I am a drummer and drumming instructor. I think that Bill played this arrangement wonderfully. He moved the tune along and also punched it perfectly. Bill Bruford is a terrific, very musical drummer.

      I had the privilege once of standing behind him at a demo session once, many years ago, and even as a non-drummer, I could see from his amazing touch what a consummate artist he was. Never seen another drummer play with such dynamic with such little effort.

    I think the negative comments are guys that are looking for him to lay into those Buddy Rich fills...the rolls, the swing. If your gonna do a tribute to Buddy,,then by all means.
    Bill is a lot more laid back but truly a magnificent drummer.

  • @mickberry164

    Yeah! That was sensational! Can you dig how clean this guy's playing is? He's laying it down for the band, and letting the band shine. "Burning for Buddy" is about his band showing how great they are. Bruford did what great drummers do...laid down that groove for the band to ride on. And ride they did. And when Bill breaks out his chops, used when they had to be in there, every note counted. We can all take a page from this performance, and send ourselves running to the practice room to achieve this kind of precision. Hard to pull off. It is simply perfect drumming. It's like watching Gadd--every note matters and every note is perfectly placed. Anyone not liking this misses the point of great drumming...the groove baby--the groove! Drums lay the foundation, and a great foundation makes for great music. It happened here and it's due to Bru!

    A drum teacher burned this on a disc for me 18 years ago and I've been wondering since what it was -- one of my favourite jazz recordings. Here it is! Such powerful swing. This drummer is amazing -- looks like he's typing an email on a keyboard while he blasts out awesome grooves and fills. 5 stars

    He caught every hit and totally supported the band. He isn’t a big band drummer but you would never know it. If you want to hear a struggling drummer, listen to the Neil Peart track. He was one of my all-time favorite drummers and may he Rest In Peace. But playing in a big band is as far from playing with Rush as ping pong is from rugby. My favorites on that project were Bissonette and Igoe.
