This video was made 3 years ago but the value is still here. I gotta say this is the most detailed and clearest video i've ever seen about The Subjuntive Mood. Thanks a lot JeN.🎉❤
This was a really fantastic lesson! I’m a 67 year old native English speaker from the US (still) learning Spanish. I don’t ever remember having learned the subjunctive mood in school - at least not until 3rd year Spanish. You commented that in the US we tend to drop the word “that.” We also tend to change the verb to the infinitive and do any number things that mask the subjunctive mood. So when we try to learn it in another language, whether the structure of the clause or the verb conjugation, it feels completely foreign and confusing. I’m going to forward this to a friend who’s learning English (maybe she’ll subscribe) and I’d like to share it with my online Spanish teachers, as well. Maybe if they’re able to show that, yes, the subjunctive does exist in English, it would be easier for their students to grasp it in Spanish. Thank you so much for this video 😊

Hi Thuy 🌻. Thanks for watching and for your kind words. You are most welcome! I am glad you found this English lesson helpful and easy to understand 🤗.
I came here trying to understand the subjunctive in English to help my Spanish, not realizing how often we use the subjunctive in English. Having said that, I’m American English speaker and some of the examples sounded strange or not how I would say them on a day-to-day basis. The subjunctive feels very formal to me in most of these examples.
Hello, Jen! I've been watching all of your videos lately to brush up on my english as I'll arrive at Canada soon. This video was amazing, it helps me a lot. Here are my answers: I suggest people take care of their healths. I demand everybody wear a mask in public places. I wish I were born in Canada :((

Even though you weren't born here, it is exciting that you will be here soon. I hope you have a safe journey and that everything goes smoothly during your travels. ✨
Jen, thank you. The lesson is very helpful, though I am chewing upon understanding the construction: If they were to get a loan, they would buy a house (how different it is to: If they got a loan, they would buy a house?
Thank you for your sweet comment, Almobaz! 😃 It is nice to hear that my lessons are helping you learn new things and improve your English. ☺️ Keep up the great work. 👍🏻

Jen, a very motivating video. I think in my case I make some mistakes. The Spanish subjuntive is much more complicated. 😒 This lesson will help me a lot. I’m so grateful to you. 👏✨ "I suggest that we BE careful if we go outdoors at this time." "I ask my friends NOT go (NOT going?, NOT to go?= wrong?) to the beach until the weather is warmer" "When I was little my mother wanted me BE a great boy, (wanted me TO BE?)" “I wish I WERE younger now, I´d do so many things that I´ve never done” “I wish I WOULD be younger now (I have doubts if this is wrong)” “I wish my friend will visit me today” Thanks again for your kindness ❤
Hi Santiago, thanks for your comment and for so many great sentence examples. ☺️ I'll go through each example for you to see if I can help. 👍🏻 Your first sentence is perfect! "I ask my friends not go to the beach..." is correct! "When I was little, my mother wanted me TO BE a great boy." The next sentence is also perfect! The easiest way to write this sentence is, “I wish I WERE younger now." “I wish my friend WOULD visit me today” (or if there is a possibility that your friend could visit then you can used the indicative mood with 'hope': "I hope my friend will visit me today.") Great work! ❤️
@@JeNsJyugyou Oh, my God. I made you work a lot. You are so kind, Thanks a lot,Jen.🍁✨ You know, it has been too long since I don´t have a chance to speak English with natives, though I read and also listent to the radio. Even now I have discovered how to watch CBC News Network TV live any time I want in the computer or phone.😋
It's no problem, I enjoy helping☺️ Listening to English is still a great way to practice and keep up your skills. CBC is an excellent source of news and is great for improving English. 👍🏻 I am glad that you are able to find many resources to help you. 🙂 PS. watch CBC live ON the computer or phone (not in) 😉
Many thanks Jen, that was amazing i didnt knew that. Well, if i were you i would explain the passive voice after subjunctive mood like: 1- It is important that the pie has to be eaten (is that correct?) 2- Can i say: if i were you i would have explained the passive voice 3- Is that subjunctive or indicative? you should have taken the job when it was offered to you. 4- What about the other verbs and adjectives like: think, believe, preferable, advisable, recommended ... etc. Many thanks again
Thanks for your nice comment and questions🤗. Since making this subjunctive mood lesson I have made a lesson on the passive voice which I hope you will enjoy: ruclips.net/video/Ku_DaWQ7ExU/видео.html 1. It is important that the pie is eaten. 🥧 2. Correct! 😁 3. You should have taken the job when it was offered to you. = subjunctive mood 4. Verbs and adjectives other than the ones I taught in this lesson can sometimes be used in the subjunctive mood. I just gave the top 12 verbs and top 6 adjectives that are used the most often so people will be familiar with them as it is highly likely those are the words they'll come across in daily conversation. I hope this helps ✨.
Wow Jen, tha one was hard, eh? haha Tricyk-loved English! I suggest that we stay at home as much as we can! I request that you never ever stop with this amazing English lessons! I wish I would be allow to travel this winter. Thaks as always for the lesson!! :)
Great suggestion and recommendation 😉☺️! I also wish that travel restrictions will be lifted by then. ❄️ (PS. Since I know you're working so hard with your English studies, I will make two small corrections to your sentences. 1. "never stop with THESE amazing English lessons." 'This' is only used to talk about one thing, but since there is more than one lesson, you need to use 'these'. Last year I made a lesson about this, that, these, those: ruclips.net/video/x8uTTCCI4CI/видео.html 2. "I wish I would be ALLOWED to travel this winter." Would be + past particle. ex: I wish that I would be chosen. I am not sure if I mentioned that specifically, but I have a lesson about the 7 different ways to use 'would' in English: ruclips.net/video/KNH7luWSuHU/видео.html )
Wow!!! I've watched so many videos on this topic and i didn't get it! But now i understand it completely ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Thanks! You helped me A lot!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hi Geneva 🤗. Thank you for your lovely comment ☺️. I am so happy to hear that my lesson about the subjunctive mood has helped you to understand this confusing grammar point✨. I wish you all the best with your English studies 💐.
Hello Sampuran 🤗. It is a pleasure to hear from you ✨. Welcome to Canada 🇨🇦🤩. How are things in Saskatchewan 🍁? Thank you for your lovely message ☺️. I am really happy to know that you enjoy me English lessons and that they have been helping you😁. I wish you all the best 🌸.
The year before I relied on Canada, I had a lot of contact with Russia-related topics, so I always associate Canada and Russia together. Even when I come to Canada, I sometimes mix English and Russian.
I recommend that people listen first before jumping the gun. I demand that people accept others differences. I wish that I have more time. By the way, that was explanatory I guess I got the point.
Hello Yeniceri 😎 Thanks for your example sentences written in the subjunctive mood. 🙂 I love your use of the expression 'jump the gun' in your first sentence. 😄 Just a small point, but your last example sentence should be, "I wish that I had more time." 😉
Hello Karuse 🤗. Sorry for the late response and thanks for your question ✨. The correct sentence is the subjunctive mood which can be said as "It is important that he come here" or "It is important he come here." I hope that helps 💐.
I have a question. Regarding the example with ''wish''. Instead of saying ''I wish that situation end soon'', wouldn't be more appropriate to say ''I wish that situation would end soon''? Keeping in mind that we use wish to refer to hypothetical situations where the verb that follows is always subjunctive but past. If you can reply, I would really appreciate it.
Hello 🤗. Thank you for your question. Both are correct, but using would as you have in, "I wish that situation would end soon" actually sounds the best ✨👍🏻. Recently I made a new lesson specifically about wishing that you may be interested in: ruclips.net/video/D67nLxeNH5s/видео.html ✨
Dear Jen, in Br.English it's possible to use both "was/were" in the subjunctive ( all textbooks say). Also, if the subject is "I" you can't say "I wish I would travel to Canada next summer", but "I wish I could travel..."
Hi Lana, thank you for your comment.☺️ I never knew that about British English. In Canada we are always taught that you can't use 'was' with the subjunctive. We need to say, "I wish I were rich", and 'I wish I was rich' is incorrect. 🤓 Also, you're correct: "I wish I could travel" sounds much better and more correct than 'I wish I would travel.' 👍🏻
It is so useful now i can use it confidently . Thank you , I hope you will explain what is action and stative verb because it is so confusing if i should use feel or feeling
Thanks for your comment, Mena☺️. I am glad to hear that this lesson on the subjunctive was helpful for you. Thanks for your suggestion about a lesson on stative verbs. I will do my best to create a lesson on that topic. For most verbs they can either be used in the continuous or are stative verbs. However, 'feel' is unique. I'll briefly explain: 'Feel' is usually a stative verb when using it to talk about your sense of touch / perception. When using 'feel' to talk about your emotions sometimes it is used as a stative verb, but can also be used in the continuous. Ie: The sunlight feels nice on my face. (You can't use the continuous because feel is used as a sense.) Vs. I feel happy today / I am feeling happy today.(Both are okay here because feel is describing an emotion, not a sense.) While I work on creating a lesson, I hope that helps a little. 😉
@@JeNsJyugyou Thanks a million for your explanation . I really want to tell you that you are the best teacher ever . I am grateful for everything you have taught us and for your support ^-^
You're very welcome. It is my pleasure to help ☺️ By the way, I am planning to upload a video about stative verbs on Monday which I hope will also be useful for you. ❤️
I have a question about subjunctive mood. My teacher recommends I watch a video from Adam's English Lesson. And there is a part explain about "Fixed Expression". I still don't understand it.
Hello Paolo 😀. Actually, I have created a lesson about that exact topic. How to use to with gerunds: ruclips.net/video/6MvizWT-_tI/видео.html ☺️. I hope you will find that video helpful 🤗.

Great suggestions, Mari! Thanks for your comment ☺️ I wish that your family will be able to come to Toronto. 😉 Any of the grammar lessons I have created can be used in both writing and speaking. Is there a specific grammar point you would like to see a lesson about?
Hello mam, We have a trolley mounted machine in our factory. Actually sometimes the wheel of this trolley often comes out due to some mechanical fault. Resulting, we are to fix it again in its place. Hence, I want to know that what will be the correct translation of this sentence? Suppose I have to complain that wheel has come out from the trolley. please let us know the perfect and attractive sentence so that we can report the formal and attractive way.
Hi Jen! My answers are: I always recommended my tutor student that he write letter legibly. But he always ignored my suggestion, so I couldn't read his letter very well. I demand myself that I listen to Jen's jyugyou and English radio program everyday. But it's difficult for me to keep this, and I skipped many times. I wish I could listen my friend's English very well and encourage her/him. I would appreciate it if you correct my English. Oh? This English is correct? I can't remember good sentence. Sorry to bother you!
Hi Chizuko 💕 Thanks for your comment and good example sentences using the subjunctive mood. 😎 Your English is mostly correct with a few minor mistakes in prepositions and vocabulary. I'll retype your sentences so you can see, but don't worry about these small points 😉 "I always recommended that my tutoring student write letters legibly. But he always ignored my suggestion, so I couldn't read his writing very well. I demand myself to listen to JeN's Jyugyou and English radio programs every day, but it's difficult for me to follow through with this and I've skipped doing it many times.I wish I could listen to my friend's English very well and encourage her/him." Like I said, the things I corrected were all small points. You CAN make good sentences and it's truly a pleasure to help and never a bother ❤️
@Gabriella Magaña Hi Gabriella ☺️ I don't know if you had a chance to see it yet, but I took your suggestion and created a video about the present perfect: ruclips.net/video/18LEPIKqfTQ/видео.html
Excellent U only talked about the present subjunctive tense which is essential at the beginning. Please talk about the other tenses in the subjunctive such as the past , imperfect etc. U did not talk about the clauses using the words "may","might"."might have" .
Thanks for your nice comment, Ekrem. ☺️ In this situation you can say, "It was helpful for me." In English both 'It was helpful for me' and 'It was helpful to me' could be correct sentences depending on the context and circumstance. "To" and "for" are prepositions and in your example "me" is the object. 'To' usually implies something is moving toward the object, while 'for' generally implies something benefiting the object. As a result, 'for' is the better choice in this situation. 🤗
PS. Thinking about the differences in the prepositions 'to' and 'for', I think you might benefit from this lesson I made about how to use 'be good'. In the video I talk about the differences between 'be good for you' and 'be good to you' : ruclips.net/video/Oz5oYINIFFM/видео.html
@@JeNsJyugyou Hey JeN! Thank you for your kind explanation and helpful attitude. Did you know what a wonderful teacher you are? Hi Jens I AM HAPPY BECAUSE today I LEARN NEW Thing love you
Jen, a very motivating video. I think in my case I make some mistakes. The Spanish subjuntive is much more complicated. 😒 This lesson will help me a lot. I’m so grateful to you. 👏✨
"I suggest that we BE careful if we go outdoors at this time."
"I ask my friends NOT go (NOT going?, NOT to go?= wrong?) to the beach until the weather is warmer"
"When I was little my mother wanted me BE a great boy, (wanted me TO BE?)"
“I wish I WERE younger now, I´d do so many things that I´ve never done”
“I wish I WOULD be younger now (I have doubts if this is wrong)”
“I wish my friend will visit me today”
Thanks again for your kindness ❤
Hi Santiago, thanks for your comment and for so many great sentence examples. ☺️
I'll go through each example for you to see if I can help. 👍🏻
Your first sentence is perfect!
"I ask my friends not go to the beach..." is correct!
"When I was little, my mother wanted me TO BE a great boy."
The next sentence is also perfect!
The easiest way to write this sentence is, “I wish I WERE younger now."
“I wish my friend WOULD visit me today” (or if there is a possibility that your friend could visit then you can used the indicative mood with 'hope': "I hope my friend will visit me today.")
Great work!

Any time. Prepositions are tricky 😉
Many thanks Jen, that was amazing i didnt knew that.
Well, if i were you i would explain the passive voice after subjunctive mood like:
1- It is important that the pie has to be eaten (is that correct?)
2- Can i say: if i were you i would have explained the passive voice
3- Is that subjunctive or indicative? you should have taken the job when it was offered to you.
4- What about the other verbs and adjectives like: think, believe, preferable, advisable, recommended ... etc.
Many thanks again
Thanks for your nice comment and questions🤗. Since making this subjunctive mood lesson I have made a lesson on the passive voice which I hope you will enjoy: ruclips.net/video/Ku_DaWQ7ExU/видео.html
1. It is important that the pie is eaten. 🥧
2. Correct! 😁
3. You should have taken the job when it was offered to you. = subjunctive mood
Very good explanation 👍

I wish I would be allow to travel this winter.
Thaks as always for the lesson!! :)
Great suggestion and recommendation 😉☺️! I also wish that travel restrictions will be lifted by then. ❄️
(PS. Since I know you're working so hard with your English studies, I will make two small corrections to your sentences.
1. "never stop with THESE amazing English lessons." 'This' is only used to talk about one thing, but since there is more than one lesson, you need to use 'these'. Last year I made a lesson about this, that, these, those: ruclips.net/video/x8uTTCCI4CI/видео.html

The year before I relied on Canada, I had a lot of contact with Russia-related topics, so I always associate Canada and Russia together. Even when I come to Canada, I sometimes mix English and Russian.
That means you are able to communicate in at least three languages. I wish I were able to speak more languages. 🙂
Could you please make a video about the comparison between indirect speech and subjunctive mood.

Hello Yeniceri 😎 Thanks for your example sentences written in the subjunctive mood. 🙂 I love your use of the expression 'jump the gun' in your first sentence. 😄
Just a small point, but your last example sentence should be, "I wish that I had more time." 😉
Hi Jen, could you tell me which is correct "It is important that he comes here" (noun clause) or "It is important he come here" (subjunctive mood)
Hello Karuse 🤗. Sorry for the late response and thanks for your question ✨. The correct sentence is the subjunctive mood which can be said as "It is important that he come here" or "It is important he come here." I hope that helps 💐.

This is also include in mood or not
When it is include
"It is still time " after this which tense use
SUPERB!! ❤
Can we use: that+should+bare infinitive?
Dear Jen, in Br.English it's possible to use both "was/were" in the subjunctive ( all textbooks say). Also, if the subject is "I" you can't say "I wish I would travel to Canada next summer", but "I wish I could travel..."
Hi Lana, thank you for your comment.☺️
I never knew that about British English. In Canada we are always taught that you can't use 'was' with the subjunctive. We need to say, "I wish I were rich", and 'I wish I was rich' is incorrect. 🤓
Also, you're correct: "I wish I could travel" sounds much better and more correct than 'I wish I would travel.' 👍🏻
I suggested that you explain the thired one ❤
She is really very skilful and charming....
A good video on Subjunctive
Thanks so much, Maryam 🤩☺️. I am so glad you found this lesson helpful 🤗.

Hello mam,
We have a trolley mounted machine in our factory.
Hi Jen! My answers are:
I always recommended my tutor student that he write letter legibly.
I'll retype your sentences so you can see, but don't worry about these small points 😉
"I always recommended that my tutoring student write letters legibly. But he always ignored my suggestion, so I couldn't read his writing very well. I demand myself to listen to JeN's Jyugyou and English radio programs every day, but it's difficult for me to follow through with this and I've skipped doing it many times.I wish I could listen to my friend's English very well and encourage her/him."
Like I said, the things I corrected were all small points. You CAN make good sentences and it's truly a pleasure to help and never a bother ❤️

Excellent
U only talked about the present subjunctive tense which is essential at the beginning.
Please talk about the other tenses in the subjunctive such as the past , imperfect etc.
U did not talk about the clauses using the words
"may","might"."might have" .
Hello Raymond ☺️ Thank you for your nice comment and great suggestion for a part 2 of this lesson. Something to add to my to-do list. 😁
Thank you so much, it was really really helpful for me. Or, helpful to me. Im not sure about the exact correct preposition lol
Thanks for your nice comment, Ekrem. ☺️
In this situation you can say, "It was helpful for me."
In English both 'It was helpful for me' and 'It was helpful to me' could be correct sentences depending on the context and circumstance.
