    I love seeing my town in your videos. We have so few "famous" youtubers here. My parents had a W123 200 and then got a W124 230E that i wrote off in my matric year in 2005. Your videos bring back many memories. I hope to bump into you around town at some stage, i will introduce myself should that happen. Keep up the great vids

      Tell me about it. I saw one that was really beat(another car crashed into driver door, boot held together by rope, signs of car being prepared body paint spraying) on the road in South Africa here but boy did that car boast and command serious respect!!! The W123 has a beautiful stance man, I love it more when it's driving on the road than parked at a car wash.

    I had two W123 200's. Underpowered, but great driver. My first diesel which I use as a daily now is a 2003 W220 S320 CDI. Amazing engine. Economical: 7 l/100km and right down into the 4's on long trips. 500Nm of power and super reliable.

    My 200D is doing 7.5l/100Km, it is slow af uphill but it can manage 120Kmh while cruising with ease, so I am really happy with it, I am wondering though if I should also get a 300D if the chance arises to check how much more powerful it feels and decide which to keep.

    • @oldmercguy

    Valve Adjustment check! Reminder to do valve adjustments every 10k miles on your W123's as per the manufacturers specifications. Itll keep your car running well, and your compression high!

    Nice car indeed. They take a bit of getting used to - growing accustomed to the relation between wheel speed and engine speed - but after that, all good. Yours does seem to be going v well. One thing that I hear CAN happen is that full throttle doesn't translate to full on through the accelerator linkages...so that, too, can be worth checking.

    • @oldmercguy
      @oldmercguy  3 месяца назад

      Very true, a lot of diesels I get in are actually only running at half throttle because of a badly adjusted throttle linkage/ accelerator cable. First thing I always check on mine. It’s like adding a turbo 😃

    • @oldmercguy
      @oldmercguy  3 месяца назад +2

      They run on pretty much anything oil based. They’re fine on the low sulphur fuels of today. When I’ve previously run mine on pure bio diesel, absolutely fine too. I have a client that runs his on old hydraulic oil as soon as the engine warms up.

    Assuming the engine is original did South African non turbo OM617 motors always retain MW injection pump? European market non turbo OM617 received the M injection pumps mid 1979. Is the upholstery MB Tex or leather? It looks like the leather pleat pattern but the texture looks like the 1960s early 1970s MB Tex. Interesting that U.S.A. 240D manuals and South African manuals could have have cruise control but Euro 300Ds and gasoline models could only get it with automatic transmission.

    • @oldmercguy
      @oldmercguy  3 месяца назад

      Yes the pump stayed the same, the combustion chamber design and the glow plugs used changed in 79, upgrades that resulted in a nice power increase on the 200/240/300D’s.

    • @oldmercguy
      @oldmercguy  3 месяца назад

      The upholstery is MBtex, far more common here on SA produced w123’s than leather. As durable and hard wearing as it comes. Cruise control was optional on manuals here, even the 200.

    well, i want to coment that i had like 12 , 300D cars all my life, still have 3 of diferent years and specifications like the coupé diesel (Canada) the turbo-diesel and the regular 3.0L engine diesel,. never ever i saw a automatic 300D and bought them in Canada and the Netherlands , i live in Portugal and automatic in a car like this only for phisically disabled persons, i only drove a S class (80´s) Mercedes with automatic but own from diferent bodies manual ones, never asked for it, either than Mercedes, a mini cooper from the 60´s in blue marine saying with chromed letters "automatic", i have Mercedes since late 50´s till 2007 ,i could have more but even this last month of June could have bought a S320 from 2004 or 5 in mint condition from a father of a friend of mine for 1.000€ but i thought it was a gasoline car, if i knew it was diesel i had bought it , a car that never had a failure ,allthough i already saw a lot of people complaining about this model but this one made a lot of km´s(430.000KM´s)with full compression measured at a Mercedes oficine or garage, all revisions made at Mercedes Garage in my hometown since new, and never had a repair done.
    What it is like? perfect . Automatic not given i would want it and it happen already with other model ,ofered to me by a dutch friend who worked for Mercedes and he had changed everything in the car but the body and the engine, one doesn´t have total control of the car and even more ridiculous is powerfull cars with automatic , Lot´s of crashes due to people who don´t know how to drive , have a lamborguini or a ferrari new or recent models, check it here on youtube but reality is not filmed everywhere so here are some not even 1% worldwide, i wonder what is like driving this car with automatic because it´s a good car but with automatic becomes less safe, more comsuption of diesel and not so good to drive as it is the same of putting training wheels in a Kawasaqui Ninja, wich i don´t know if still exists but i bought one when releaed and was a very nice moto or motor-bike or whatever it´s called in english , the last i bought was a Honda CBR1000RR-R it´s new but with training wheels would be a hazzard, the same with cars with automatic transmition , so many kids die each year because of that ,16 or even 18 years old and the most powerfull ferrari or lamborguini or a mustang 500 or Cobra or any new model in the U.S. that kids ask their rich fathers ,and they buy itand the best transmitions that i know of are from Mercedes, never had a failure in any of my cars, others are complicated and automatic even more

      Sadly pretty much impossible to find here in South Africa. In the 4 cylinder petrols you can at least use the 5 speed off a w124, on the diesels (and the 280e) you can’t.
