- My good friend Dana and I set off on a ride from Grand Junction to Moab on our Priority 600 bicycles. This 168 mile route takes us on scenic byways and dirt roads for a fun 3-day adventure organized by the San Juan Hut System. In this episode, we ride from Gateway Colorado to the Paradox Valley, meeting wonderful 'strangers' along the way. We also check out the Bedrock general store, featured in the classic movie, Thelma and Louise.

What did you all think of Sam? What a sweet guy. Meeting people like him is my favorite part of touring. Have any of you come upon a magical character on your travels?
Love sam....
Ryan, I did meet someone in 1968, when I was touring Tasmania on the bike with a mate. We had ridden up Mount Wellington, which overlooks Hobart. It's 4165 feet above sea level and I was pretty thirsty, when we got to our 'digs' that afternoon. So thirsty that I drank lots of water straight from the tap - not a good idea. Next day, I was sick as a dog and could barely push the pedals, so, the next morning, I took a bus back to Devonport and left my mate to carry on alone. While in Devonport, waiting for the ferry to take me back to Melbourne, I killed time one day with a stroll down by the water. I sat in a little, enclosed picnic table & seat and struck up a conversation with an old chap, who was taking the odd swig from a beer bottle that he had in his tote bag. He was somewhat unkempt and, after chatting with him for a little while, I got the definite impression that grog had ruled his life. He reckoned you could make a palatable drink from metho and shoe polish (YUK!!) and he said that one (my word, not his) could find a place to sleep in Melbourne for 30 cents! After a while, another older chap came along. He was very nicely dressed, including an expensive-looking sports jacket. He stopped to talk to the two of us and it came out that it was the beer-drinker's birthday. He was 59 but I had already formed the opinion that he looked at least 70. Then the dapper gentleman asked the other whether he had had some sickness, to which he said "yes, mostly self-inflicted". It turned out that the non-beer-drinker was 72. It was as though they had swapped their ages around! It was a terrific life lesson for an impressionable 23-year-old!
Ryan Van Duzer respect for our veterans
What a lovely man
wow, what an encounter! People are so interesting, and we can learn a little bit from everyone
Absolutely, Sam is a special guy
Taking her brother and spreading him all over the world is the most beautiful thing I've heard in a very long time. 😇
ISITVAINTOSAYIMPRETTY I agree, it’s very sweet
I’m instantly crying. Wow.
if you know where you came from, you won't get lost.
love it.
wisdom!
When I rode San Juan Huts from Purgatory to Moab in fall, 2016, PI was there at the Bedrock store. Same pieces of advice. Wonderful guy. We also stayed at that hut for the night. When I got up to pee, walking out back, a snattlerake let me know I was about to make a fatal misstep. Whew! Great memories. such an awesome tour!
"enjoy, its only complicated if you make"
Such wonderful simple advice!
Thanks for this series, I am really enjoying it!
We really loved meeting Sam, he was so sweet!
@@danadderichsweiler8847 yes he truly has arrived in life.
This was amazing. I have to say, your videos are just awesome and inspiring. Probably sounds crazy coming from a 51 year old, but it's on my list to meet you some day...and hopefully get in a ride with you. Ever since your Baja videos I've been hooked. Keep it up and thanks again for sharing. Well done, both of you.
Thanks Michael, I'd love to meet you someday too. I love people of all ages, Dana is 57!
Wow. Dana bringing her brother with her and leaving a piece of him wherever she travels is touching. My dad is near the end of his battle with cancer. He taught me to ride a bike and swing a golf club. While we haven't shared a love of bike riding, we did regularly get together on the links. He requested that I spread his ashes around the golf courses he loves when the time comes and a piece of him will go to (and stay) at every course I play. Reminding me of that is the first time I've cried over this period of life change and I thank you for it. Plus I'm setting my sights on touring around Colorado. It's beautiful!
Ryan you just keep being awesome!
Love your work they are so peaceful to watch and a healthy escape
Hey Ryan, I lived in a campervan with two bikes strapped to the back for about 8 years, hopping over the channel to France and beyond, only going back when the money ran out. When I'd earned enough and felt the pull I'd be off again. I have found that some of the people you meet along the way stay with you. Genuine, true people, weather it's something they have said or did, or something you can't quite put your finger on, but they pop into your head every so often and your back in a wonderful place with a big smile on your face !! They say, certain people you meet, you meet for a reason. That reason may not be apparent straight away but I think that in time and at the right time it all becomes crystal clear !!!!!! There's a big wide world out there, and like you I'm going to keep having a look. You never know....Stay true dude. Best wishes to Dana....... bring it on !!!!!!!!!!!!
I totally agree with everything you said. Thanks for sharing
You meet some of the most amazing people on your adventures. Love you, love Dana (hugs to you both) and THANK YOU, Sam for your service. God bless dear one 🇺🇸❤️
I've been very fortunate to have met some pretty incredible people on my travels
Great! "Thelma & Louise" is at the top of my top ten list of movies. Love it for so many reasons. But the clincher was watching the movie in the theater and being very happily surprised to see the ending. "Hey! That's on the Jug handle Loop ride below Deadhorse Point near Potash! We've ridden RIGHT BY THAT!!!" So on our next Moab trip, we were sure to revisit the location of the finale. (Obviously NOT the Grand Canyon.) Plus, the beauty of the area, the amazing surreal view of the Abajos with such sublime music makes the movie a true treasure. The humor that ensues in Arches. All of it!
Awesome! It's a fun place to check out for sure
Meeting someone who was around for the uranium boom is so cool! "Thelma & Louise" featured a very old uranium miner in the film. I'm pretty sure it was the part in the "ghost town" of Cisco at 128 and I70, if memory serves. They have a "meeting of the minds," and Louise ends up with his cowboy hat. I found that scene very emotionally stirring, but then I guess I'm a softie!
Anyone interested in the history of the area might enjoy "Uranium Frenzy" about the boom and the players, including Charlie Steen. Pretty amazing history, especially its prominent role in the pursuit of the atomic bomb.
And your choice of music after meeting Sam is perfect. Also reminiscent of T & L.
Man, I just cannot get ENOUGH of this part of our country!!!
PS "Paradox valleys" are cool! Moab sits in one as well. They're also called "salt valleys" because the overlying rock sat on underlying layers of salt. Over eons, water dissolved the salt and the overlying rock layers sank, creating valleys. Moab is the perfect example of why it's a "paradox." The valley lies perpendicular to the "valley" or canyon cut by the Colorado River. Thus a paradox. I always found Moab and the four-way intersection of the Colorado and Moab valley somewhat confusing. Roads and stuff leading in all number of directions, it seemed.
Taking Rocky, around on trips is very special and awesome....Great stuff
Sam and his dog where cool. Great video! Beautiful country. Thanks Ryan!
They are are!
Scenery is wonderful and the people are amazing.
It was a perfect day for all things beautiful
I am soooo lucky to live in this area, spending my last years here makes up for the years in places I did not love.
I didn’t even know Priority bikes existed until I started watching your videos. Now I’m figuring out how to buy one of those electric ones.
Hey in Bedrock there is something very familiar for me. My father was carpenter and he used a lot Cascamite glue. Nice to see this in you video. Many Years without see it.
I'm grounded in a stationary bike because of lumbago pain and you don't know how much I'm enjoying your videos while pedaling at home. Thanks a lot from Ibiza island
Great Video.. Ryan you’re very inspiring 😎.. When you are Touring it’s always the people you meet.. Dana is a hoot..
Dana is the best!
What an awesome day. Meeting great people along the way. Told the wife you know what my next trip is. She just laughed. Have to get some wider tires on myTrek 520 for sure. Take care, Al
You should TOTALLY do this, the 520 would be a perfect bike for this
Great scenery. Beautiful colors in the canyon. Sam and the couple from NY in the store seem like cool people. Wow, the lady with the food is the best! Damn, that looked good.
Yep, we had a full day of meeting awesome people...my fav part of touring!
where's your part 2? I'm doing this tour next week and am so excited to see these in advance!
I am loving your adventures, and of course, the people are the best!!!
The people really are my fav part
I watched this video during the lockdown and three years later I finally bought a Priority 600. I want to do this tour! Burrito powered transportation.
Awesome!! Hope you’re enjoying it
I cannot wait to meet Dana in Boulder..I love her spirit....
She's the best!
Great story. I can't believe you can shoot such incredible work in just a day.
It's tricky to ride a bike 60 miles and also document everything, but I've got my systems down. Thanks for watching!
wow, that scenery was amazing! Thanks for taking us along on your ride!
I agree, that's my favorite landscape
@@duzer I live in Florida so it's very different from what I am used to...
First video I saw was the Matterhorn one, yesterday. I subscribed because I liked the story telling and the visual content. This is the second video I see, and it is wonderful, the clips are super good quality, the editing is nice and the I get a good vibe out of it.
Thanks for subscribing!! That Matterhorn video was a while ago...you've got a lot of catching up to do :) Have a great day!
@@duzer thanks you too!
Ryan, you are such an inspiration, your love of life and travel, (the real way as close to the earth as possible). You never appear to miss a sight sound or smell in nature.Your videos have gotten better and better visually over time, it is almost like being there with you my friend, I feel your heart! Loveonya Teresa G ....Canada
Thanks Teresa from Canada! I like getting close to the earth and getting my hands dirty :) We are so fortunate to live around such beauty.
Fantastic scenery there, Ryan! I thought those mesas and such-like were down in New Mexico and Arizona. What a great life you have!
Those mesas are a desert southwest kinda thing, and I LOVE THEM!
Yet another route to add to my bucket list
Ryan, as with many of your other productions (and even more so here), your film footage is spectacular! Also, as usual, your inclusion of such interesting people from Dana to the stops along the way are inspiring! DD
thanks my man, we met some great people on this day
I've been through Grand Junction. This sounds like a really cool route! #Bucketlist. Thank you for the inspiration.
Dana you are so sweet! I’m so sorry to hear about your brother.
She's the sweetest!
Love you man ryan. It just feels good to watch your videos. Peace out brother sam. Dana is a great companion. Love your energy. 😎💚🚴🚴🚴🚴
owl tune thanks my man. Dana is the best, very fortunate to call her a dear friend.
What a great vid! The odds of finding two Brooklynites in “not quite the middle of nowhere’ has to be lower than the odds of winning the lottery. Amazing what you can find when you keep getting out there.
Very true, and they seem to love it out there
I tought my kids the same thing. Frequently look back to where you came from and take a few mental pictures. That way your return trip will look familiar.
It's great advice!
Keep up with the good adventures Ryan! As always love watching them, they are always full of positivity and motivation
I will, and thanks for following along!
The supple life ...
Ryan you formilia with path less peddled and the supple life
Aww, I like those guys!
Amazing video. Such inspiring landscapes and experiences. Thanks for taking the time to document your travels.
thanks for watching!
I love the outfield fence for the field in the middle of nowhere..........just in case the ball goes out there, chips the mountain, and the little league gets sued!! Hahahahahahah! DD
yep, what a fun place to play baseball!
Love, love, love this series! I’m going to ride this!
Love you Ryan! Keep pedaling brother.
Thanks!! I’ll for sure keep moving
Thanks Ryan for share all these amassing videos and people, loved this types of trips.
Thanks for watching!
Awesome part 2. I think Sam was genuine and sweet. Looks like he has a lot of love in his heart. That is just beautiful. We need more people to stop and enjoy and love life to the fullest. Like you have said before life on a bike a 15 mph doesn’t go passed you and miss the good things that life has to offer. Keep on trucking buddy! As always love he footage 👍🏻👌🏻
And yes, I hav meet many people like Sam but in Baja. Haven’t had the chance to adventure in out beautiful states 😏. Sooon!
Meeting Sam was the highlight fo that day for sure, and the good thing is, there's people like him everywhere!
12:08 "...Believe it to achieve it, visualize and realize, and your consciousness will manifest..." Quantum Physics...Thank you Pie and Duzer....I love your videos

Beautiful places.

Ryan, another amazing video with awesome views! I'm sure it takes lots work to shoot and edit the videos which document your epic adventures. All of your efforts show in the final product. Keep up the great work!
Thanks Don, yep, it's a ton of work to document a ride like this, but I love it...stay tuned for more
You make excellent videos Ryan. Love from Seattle.

Lovely adventure videos you make Ryan. So inspiring. Coming from a roadie, I am looking forward to my first adventure bike tour in the future, most likely on the Priority 600. Namaste.

Thanks, that area is perfect for droning
Oh Ryan, I am so sorry Allie is no longer present, I don’t mean to bring it up, but I found it so inspiring.
I just bought a brand new specialized, to replace my 26 year old Cannondale. Your videos really inspire me to push my bike rides harder and harder. I can’t wait to do these kinds of bike tours like you very soon.
Congrats on the new bike, I wish you many beautiful adventures on that thing! And it's ok about Ali, breakups are always hard, but we ended on good terms and shared many beautiful moments together
The baseball field was built....and they came!!!

Your aerial shots are awesome. Still can't believe you're a one man production crew. Hahaha

Cool People

We had a great day of meeting nice people, Marty too at the end
I really liked this video
Thanks!!
Okay, do you think this trail would be do able on my recumbent? I use a 26x1.75 rear tire and a 20x1.75 front. And it looks like you don't need a tent. Looks like a interesting ride.
totally! A recumbent would be great for this route
Great stuff keep it up
Thanks!
And... the shaver makes an appearance! Real fans understand. ♥️
hahahaha! It had to make a little appearance :)
haha Anthony sounds like he's in Bedrock on witness protection from some mob stuff.
Ryan, I always feel so inspired, so uplifted after watching your great videos. I need to visit this part of the country.

I actually don't use any filters

hey! ryan love the videos. Are you guys riding the same bike? yours is a flat bar and hers is a drop bar?
it's the same bike, she just put drop bars on hers
How was riding the Priority into the wind compared to your other bikes?
Wind sucks on any bike, ha! Especially if you have panniers hanging off the back like anchors
I have the same helmet as you.
Can you tell me where you purchased the camera adapter?
The camera mount comes with the Sony Action Cam
I’ve driven this route. You guys have inspired me to do this the next time I go.

@@duzer we will be on the road aome day brother NO FLATIE ,NO WHAMMIE! NO BRAKIES!!

To enrich uranium you shoot it with a laser - then it becomes really radioactive / unstable .
4:27 ❤🌹
Depending on where you were, the radioactive area may have been from when the government was setting off nukes underground over in those parts. ;)
No, that was Nevada. This is where the material for the nukes was mined. Mountain bikers, motorcyclists and Jeepers owe a debt of gratitude to the prospectors of the 50's who went far and wide looking for uranium, cutting roads as they went.
But along with that benefit, we also now have the Atlas Uranium Processing Plant outside of Moab. Uranium processing right on the Colorado River; what could go wrong?!!!
A processing mill that generated $100 million in revenue, but will cost over $1 Billion to clean up, probably more. THAT is part of what's wrong with our country. Another example of "privatizing the profits and socializing the risks."
Next video looks like its gonna be raining
you'll have to wait and see :)
