Hi Mat, the simple things in life are more rewarding than very elaborated ones, most of the time, that’s what I think. I wanna share with you in a few words how I feel after doing some of the GDMBR this summer. I’ve done El Camino De Santiago on a bike 3 years ago, wonderful experience ridding through the towns and mountains of northern Spain for 850 Km. I would do it again sometime in the future, but, the GDMBR left on me the yearning for those mountains, the solitude and vulnerability mixed with the natural beauty and the sense of accomplishment after every day of hard work on the bike was unparalleled. Bikepacking is not for everyone, like everything in life, but for those who find it to be so fulfilling and rewarding there’s nothing better…at least for now. Thank you for your video.
I completely agree that simple things bring the most pleasure. I sometimes end up overcomplicating things, especially when it comes to new gear, but once out on the trail it all becomes simple again. I definitely have the Camino on my list. I haven't decided whether to hike or cycle it. The GDMBR is an incredible trail and I miss it already. Thanks for commenting 👍

If that's not motivation to hit one million then I don't know what is. You are an old, trusted subscriber and your comments always make me smile. I particularly remember the bonesaw suggestion.
Loved the video. You do need a bigger cutting board. I like the Ikea flexible cutting boards. I take one and cut it down so it fits in a sleeve of the pannier. Also, I use it as a plate.

I don’t know if there is an NHS equivalent of chiropractor, but thee to one. One here in Wyoming saved my bikepacking and hiking life. For a few more years in my seventh decade. I'm not sure if we have chiropractors on the NHS but I'll definitely look into finding one if my back doesn't improve. Thankfully it seems to be getting better. It's good to hear that you prolonged your bikepacking and hiking life. I don't particularly want to get into reviewing gear so I'll likely just stick to offering my honest opinion of things I genuinely like. Thanks for the advice and thanks for watching 👍
Couldn't agree with you more Mat on the click stand it's just brilliant. I would never be without one especially with a loaded bike. Simple, lightweight, portable and stable.
I’ve just discovered your channel and have probably watched about five videos, and just wanted to thank you for your time and effort, it’s quite inspiring. 👏🏻🚲🌟
I suffered from back pain for decades! Including having surgery. I tried everything anyone ever suggested and found what worked for me and my back. Everyone seems to know what you must do. They mean well I guess. Pain free now. Strict anti-inflammatory carnivore diet did it for me. I wouldn't recommend you start with that though😁
Hi. I wasn't aware that the carnivore diet was anti inflammatory. I don't know much about diets full stop. I've never looked after my back so I guess I'm paying the price. It's improving thigh which is good. Thanks for commenting 👍
I’ve managed my lower back for 25+ years. Daily stretches and strengthening exercises, takes 20 mins at most and it’s kept me going. Avoid food/drinks that can cause inflammation, drink lots of water. Cold water dipping helps too. Great video, yet not one mention of Monty Python? 😁
Thanks for the information. I think I have to come up with a similar strategy for managing my back. I'm pretty good at exercise and could definitely manage the stretches every day. Diet is more difficult. I'll have to be more disciplined. Any suggestions to where a list of foods to avoid can be found would be great. Thanks 👍
After GD and Baja Divide tours this year, I have also gone to front and rear racks plus a tarp. The chair has come in handy, especially in Baja where everything is sandy or prickly!
I was unsure about the front rack to start with but I just don't need to focus too much on weight as I'm planning on a reasonably leisurely pace. It sounds like you and I are both thinking of making these trips more comfortable. Cheers 👍
"I made the fatal mistake of going to sleep." 😅 I can relate! If your stomach doesn't straighten out soon, maybe consider a test for giardia, just to be sure you didn't pick up a parasite.
Thanks for the feedback. I have a couple of older videos where I discuss my set up. I'm in the process of refining it at the moment. Once I know what I'm doing I'll fit it in to a video at some point. Cheers 👍
Hi Mat, as a man that’s suffered the classic lower back pains since mid 40’s and got into cycling in later 40’s all I can offer is that having tried various physios to spinal injections… prevention is better than cure - this means good posture , care and develop whatever daily stretch / yoga type works for you. I have throughly enjoyed your GMBDR story so as a small thank you I do hope that you can develop a daily routine that works for you to keep going. Just think - a 10 minute routine may be all it takes to keep you going for the next 10 years. Why not ?
I will.listen to your advice. I really need to go down the prevention route. I've always thought about a short yoga routine. I'll look into one. If you have a recommendation I'd be grateful. Cheers 👍
Your videos are terrific! I know it’s a lot of work, but they’re really well done and entertaining. I just found your channel a couple weeks ago and have been binge-watching your GDMBR. So we’ll done! Wanted to comment here because I laughed out loud at 11:30 when the peppers dumped -twice, lol. My daughter’s trail name on the AT was Dirty Pasta because she accidentally dumped her pasta in the dirt but ate it anyway. So nothin’ wrong with those dirty peppers! Thanks for the hours of entertainment 😊
Thanks. It's always nice to hear that people like these videos. I can't believe I dropped the peppers twice. I love your daughters trail name...When did she do the AT? I did it in 2019. My trail name was Dr Daffodil. Cheers 👍
@@matryderadventures She hiked the AT in 2021. I’m sure there’s a story behind Dr. Daffodil, and we’d all like to hear it. Trail names can be so funny and creative.
@@cindicokeley1575It's a shame we don't have trail names when bikepacking. I'll try to remember to discuss that on the next video. I'll also talk about my trail name. Say Hi to your daughter from a fellow AT hiker!!
After refining my bikepacking setup to a point where I'm 98% satisfied, I turned my attention to my clothing, followed by assembling a comprehensive first aid kit. I then devoted a substantial amount of time to researching versatile, globally available foods for one-pot meals, allowing me to stop and cook when hungry instead of snacking, providing me with more energy during my tours. Over the past year, my focus has shifted to perfecting my adventure photography setup. This involved identifying the right camera gear that's easy to edit while on the go and optimizing the placement for quick access to my drone and camera gear. I've incorporated various mounts, such as a DJI controller bike mount and attachments on my bike and vest, ensuring I can start filming within seconds without taking my hands off the handlebars - a much better alternative to juggling a selfie stick or holding dji mini 3 pro controler while navigating technical rides. Next thing i work on is seo for RUclips
What about the last 2%? I'm guessing that's an impossible task. I'm about 12% there and have a long way to go. Are you thinking about putting more on RUclips? Sounds like based on the SEO statement.
@@matryderadventures yeah been in limbo last year now just moved in to new place so building a RUclips studio ps being a gear junkie 98% is amazing for me .. the last 2 percent is deciding on my shelter … both shelters i have are perfect so hard to decide which one to use lol
As someone fast approaching 50 who has recently rediscovered biking I've been enjoying your adventures with bike packing. Very inspiring! But good sir you HAVE to heat up that tortilla 1st, just a few secs (longer the better) on that open flame should do. It will make it taste better but also more pliable (when warm) so it wont tear when rolled.
Well done on not swearing when you dropped the cutting board twice lol. Chop em at home be easier …see you on the next one buddy hope the back gets better. Atb Coops 👍🏻🚴
A whole can of spam ? You sir are a legend for being able to put that away. It is a bit rich and a little goes a long way. It’s also a bit of a stretch to consider spam healthy. Maybe look for the single spam slices that are packed into an envelope. I really enjoy your content and I did not report it as spam 😂
I think I'm going to avoid SPAM if I can. It's pretty awful really. Just convenient but that's not a good enough excuse. 'Report it as Spam' 🤣....Cheers
You can make the front of your bike even simpler and eliminate the front rack completely. Bags by Bird Piccolo (or something close to that), makes a fine top loading bag about 14 liters that just straps to your bars and has some wooden dowels for support. Very well made, looks good and carries well. Could be BxB or spelled Byrd.
I too love my click stand. I have one for each of my touring bikes. I noticed that you folded yours up and stuck it in your feed bag. Just a heads up...I did the same thing and it ended up falling out along the trail somewhere. I still haven't found a good spot for it yet, but I don't use the feed bag for that anymore. Thanks for the content, buddy!!
Thanks for the warning. I definitely don't want to lose that. I'll find somewhere different. It's one of those things that you would have to replace. I wish I'd had one on the GDMBR. Cheers and thanks for commenting.
Another great video. Thanks! I know the chair seems bougie coming from UL hiking but I think I would definitely take one bike packing. Especially on shorter days. I find I just spend most of the time laying in the tent rather than sitting on the ground.
Good point. I ended up lying in the tent for longer than I'd like just to avoid sitting on the floor too. Maybe I will take it next time. I go back and forth!! Cheers 👍
I know how I reacted physically after an ultra run. Can certainly see the longer recovery time needed after the stress you put on yourself completing the Tour Divide. Hope your back is better
All the best. Especially with the back. I was thinking about a basket as well. But I would put it in the back and would depending on the weather use it for carrying a couple of smaller dry bags instead of a big one or for drying out my sleeping gear, because that starts to smell after a few nights getting up early and packing it up wet
I like your idea for the basket. I think the basket will be a flexible option. It seems to work well with my new bag but it does bounce around a bit so I'll need to secure it better. The back is almost back to normal. Cheers 👍
Good stuff mate. The click stand & tarp are on the list to buy next, & the Helinox Chair Zero is a game changer around camp (definitely worth the extra/minimal weight). I’m just about to head up to the Thai Northern mountains (Nan) on a 7 day self-supported trip; we can get water from some of the mountain villages & streams but will have to carry enough food for 7 days….I’ve premixed an oatmeal mix (oatmeal/chia seeds/cacao/coconut flakes/raisins) which I will cold soak in a peanut butter jar overnight for breakfast (may heat up in the morning if it’s chilly) canned tuna/mackerel/salmon wraps for lunch & I’ve got couscous (super quick too cook) & pasta with various Thai curry sauces, oh & a box of Mac n Cheese! Might also pack 7 beers in the panniers just before we enter the mountains/point of no return 😊 Needless to say I’m not packing light. If you ever fancy a trip over this end of the world, Google cycling the Mae Hon Son loop in Northern Thailand; absolutely incredible ride…particularly between November-January.
What an amazing sounding trip. 7 days of food! That sounds like a challenge. I'd be interested to see your set up. I like the idea of premixing a superfood oatmeal mix. I would like to give that a try. I also like the canned fish option. Much better than horrible Spam. I'll add that route to my list.i have a lot to research. Please let me know how you get on. Cheers 👍👍
I have that same chair , just added it to my kit . I believe I have everything I need to start a multi-day trip . Two trips already planned for next summer , Truckee ,Ca Bear valley for two nights and the Anaxshat Passage - Hood tier loop , Oregon timber trail .
There is a collar on the fire box burner on the part underneath where the flame comes out. If you turn it you can regulate the air/gas mix to create a more efficient blue flame that is hotter and doesn’t waste fuel. Your latest vids show it in the fire flame setting that is supposed to replicate a open fire, its not supposed to be used for cooking with it in that setting.
Thanks for the tip. I saw the collar but did t really know what it was for. I'll adjust it. I should probably read instructions now and then...Cheers and thanks for commenting 👍
Good to see you are still enjoying yourself even with a dodgy back. Love your little gadgets. The comedy sketch with your veg on the floor made me laugh😂 Hopefully your back has improved for your next outing. 😊 Think you should cook a crumble next time😋
The problem on the GDMBR is that you are limited to the selection of food available at gas stations. I too felt like I suffered from malnutrition, lack of sleep, and poor hydration. I think what I’ll do is try to stock up on freeze dried stuff and take a little more time to eat a better breakfast. Better drink mixes would also help.
Definitely. The freeze dried stuff is expensive but it is definitely more nutritious. Eating properly is definitely a challenge. A decent breakfast is at least a straightforward challenge. Thanks for commenting 👍
That wasn't a strange video at all. It was just what the doctor ordered. A bikepacking video 😊 cheers 🥂 I hope there's other versions of that kickstand. I think I will have problems getting it delivered unless I find him on Amazon
Thanks. It wasn't exactly planned so I end up rambling about nothing in particular. I'm glad you liked it though. The clickstand guy is based in the States. He should be able to deliver to you. Cheers 👍
Nothing strange about this vid! lol I got a good chuckle over the cutting of the pepper and it hitting the ground, twice! A tarp is a game changer. It increases your living space so much in the rain and makes it so much more enjoyable. I take one on all trips whether backpacking and canoeing. :) Wonderful night out, thanks for sharing. P.S. Everything starts going downhill after 50, sucks really! haha!
I kept my cool over the pepper incident which is remarkable. Things may go downhill after 50 but I'm a lot calmer so that's good. The tarp is now a permanent fixture. Cheers 👍
Excellent as ever, however not sure Spam the healthier option!? But anything goes if your hungry. I have an OMM Elkhorn rack on front with basket and designated bag. Tailfin panniers on rack stays and Tailfin rack and panniers on the back so very similar . I mount my Clik stand on a pump mounting bracket on the seat stay, then its immediately accessible ......no faffing in bags to get it out. I think a lot of people see bikepack racing and confuse it with bikepacking and attempt to go too minimalist. Each to their own etc but id rather drop the pace, look around more and have the things i need wirhin reason to be comfortable.
Thanks. Spam is definitely not a healthy option. I think I'll look for a better protein source next time. It doesn't even taste nice. I don't really know why I eat it other than its easy to carry and doesn't go off. It sounds like we have very similar set ups. I nearly went with the Elkhorn and feel I should have. With the two front panniers it feel overloaded so I probably won't be using them. We'll see. I like the clickstand mounting suggestion. I have a pump bracket somewhere. I'm with you. It's better to take more time and improve comfort. Thanks for commenting 👍
Mat, let me know when you're planning on doing the BC Epic 1000 route in 2024. You will almost certainly hit snow up Gray Creek Pass until mid-July (perhaps earlier). My plan is to do it sometime after mid-July but I need to be back to Penticton (its on the route) by the first weekend in August. I may have some other riders too. Let me know if you're still interested.
I'm seriously tempted by the BC Epic. I'll be in touch once I know more about my plans next year. I have to sit down and have a real think about what I'm going to do. I'll definitely be In touch. Cheers.
I have a similar set up on my Surly Ogre ,But on my Olsen Lamb ( similar to your bike) ,I like the Ortlieb Ultimate 6 & a Jones H bar 2.5 ,you can also fit the Ortlieb 11 litre bag on the same bracket .I hope your better soon .
Thanks. I'll have a look at the Ortlieb Ultimate 6. I almost went with the Jones bar but, not having any real knowledge I was a bit concerned about the sweep. I might still try it at some point. I'm already feeling a lot better thanks. Cheers 👍
I started ultra light weight was 14kg with all gear and bike ..but the last few years i moved to more heavy and more durable gear .. i call it trail and error when i test gear lol best tip i can give focus on the core setup which stays the same and just change outer for difffrent style of trips … i moved completely away from front fork cages and front fork bags and bottle bike just feels better
Good tip. I'll try to do the same. I'm not going to use front panniers and I'll try keeping the weight on the rack to a minimum. It's just there for when I have a long distance between resupplies. I just hate having a bag flopping around on the handlebars. Cheers 👍
Hi Mat. Thanks for sharing your videos. I have really enjoyed the GDMBR series. I would like to hear a review on the Tailfin racks and see if you have the carbon or the aluminum version. Also interested to see how you like the front racks I carry a handlebar bag and fork bags but don’t like them to be too heavy. I also agree the chair makes a big difference at the end of the day. Safe riding.
Hi. I'll have a think about reviews. If I go ahead I'll make the Tailfin the first one! I have the aluminium one. It isn't that much heavier than the carbon one and a lot cheaper. Also, I may be wrong but the carbon one doesn't have the cage mounts. I haven't used them but may do at some point. I really like the whole Tailfin set up. They worked perfectly and everything was rock solid. I'm not sure about the rack yet. The front end feels really heavy. If I could go back in time I think I would have gone with the Old Man Mountain Elkhorn which is smaller and lighter. I've decided that I won't be using front panniers anyway so don't need the rails. Any other questions just ask. Cheers 👍
Eyy, you got a click stand, they are so good. I love mine. I'm not keen to laying my bike down constantly and like the higher mounting point on it compared to lower mounted ones. I'm also a fan of a rando style bag. Mine is handlebar mounted Choike mini rando, since I haven't settled on a front rack setup yet. But I also just got a new item, an Outer Shell frame bag, it's really nice and half the cost of a Rogue Panda I was lookin at.
I love the Clock stand..I'll have a look at your rando bag. I'm not sure about the basket yet, it may be possible to attach mine directly to the rack and save a bit of weight. I'll experiment. The Outer Shell gear definitely seems to be well made. I'm happy with mine so far. Cheers 👍
Hey Bert! I used to run a rando bag on a front rack on my MTB rig, very convenient BUT the rattling on trails drove me nuts, so I moved it on to another bike that only goes on the road. New kit looks good, would be interested to hear your thoughts on it in the future. Coffee and instant porridge is a staple for me in the mornings on a trip and I don't feel human until thats done.......... Hope the bad back is on the mend. Cheers. Ernie
Hey Erniem. Yes, I've experienced the rattling already. I'm experimenting with getting everything secured better. It may see a move onto my road bike too. I'll persevere and let you know how it goes. My 'enhanced' porridge was really good. I'll be doing that again. As for coffee, I need to put about more effort in. The instant stuff does the job but I can do better....Cheers, Bert.
Hi Matt, This is my fist time commenting on RUclips.I had watched this video some time ago and thought hum interesting. Months later and came across your gdvmb videos. Binged them 😊. Timing is everything. I have done a little backpacking and thought to do the AT. Had ski accident and have now had acl surgery and not recommended to run jump etc. clear for all tings biking though.. came across your Chanel and am very inspired. Any recommendations as fare as basic training to do this. I mean I’m a hiker not a biker..
Hi. Sorry for the late reply. I had some moderate issues with my back when I hiked the AT but managed ok. There's not much climbing l/jumping etc. except for The Notch and Katahdin so you might be ok. The odds of tripping are high which is a consideration. Roots and rocks are everywhere. As for the bike training, I didn't manage to do much training before I set off. I definitely started without being fully prepared. Thankfully I started in Canada so was able to develop my fitness along the way. I feel anyone with a moderate level of fitness or experience would be fine at the right pace (for me 50ish miles per day). In my experience, the tough part, as with hiking, is the mental challenge. I hope this helps. Cheers 👍
Hi Mat, loving your videos, thanks for sharing. The gdmbr series was really enjoyable. Ill have to borrow the idea on the click stand, i did my first tour on the Rebellion way back in June and i got fed up with keep having to lift up my loaded bike after having to lay it down. Do you have a link for the lightweight seat, i couldn't see it in the links list. Hooe your vack feels better soon. Thanks again.
Hi. I'm glad you're enjoying these videos. The clock stand is amazing. I bought the heavy duty one. I might not have mentioned that. I'll add the link to the description. It's a Helinox Chair zero. The back is definitely getting better. Thanks for following along 👍
Hi Mat, Hope your back recovers soon. You mentioned you had dodgy guts since being back, have you been tested for Giardia ? You did drink water straight from streams and I know how easy it is to get Giardia as l've had it twice myself. If left untreated it can have longer lasting affects. I did see someone mention it on the GDMBR page the other day too.
Hmmm. I hadn't considered Giardia. I drank unfiltered from streams but only in Canada. Still a consideration though. I am eating so much food so that's more likely the issue. I'll look into getting tested anyway. Thanks for the info 👍👍
@@matryderadventures I used to work for Medecins Sans Frontieres in both Asia and Africa and caught it twice, technically l only drank filtered water but the cooks may not have been using the same water. I also had Amoebiasis which has similar symptoms both from water. ... about the food, we have just done the Wolf Way l told you about and we had planned to stop for food at pubs etc but ended up living off coop meal deals through the day.. it may not be the GDMBR but the uk has some food deserts, so many villages with no shops or pubs that open in the day..

I have a new found admiration for you and your trek on the GDMBR. I’m currently in Neath (Skewen actually) down from Edinburgh and borrowed a mountain bike. A few days ago I went up the local mountain, gravel switchbacks. I don’t know how high it is but that constant climb for maybe half an hour or so...phew! Coming back down was fun though!
Neath. Not far from Cardiff. I should explore Wales a bit more. maybe when I'm back visiting my Mum. The downhills make the uphills worthwhile. Good to hear you've been out. Cheers 👍

This guy has the fastest known time I am thinking 2 months plus, start in August for more stable weather and less mosquitoes, finish in Oct. I have almost the same setup as you bike wise.
I think you have the type of verbal and analytical skills to do superb reviews. I think your probably honest as well, until you get 1 million subscribers and get out of control.
SPAM > eating better seams questionable but I guess its all about perspective. Cheers and hope the back heals soon. Big fan from America.
As you say, SPAM is better than what I have been eating but it's still awful. I can do better. It's borderline food at best. Cheers...
I enjoyed watching this video -- my first of yours. Thanks. All the best with the back
Great! I'm glad you liked it. The back is a lot better thanks. Thanks for watching👍
@Bikepacking that's good to hear. I'll keep an eye out for new videos. What two shelters are you debating?
@@matryderadventures one is ground shelter one is hammock both same weight and pack size and both 4 season …
Thanks Matt
Very helpful
Merry Christmas, all the best adventures for the new year!
Whoa, a whole can of Spam, plus seasoning mix! Good thing you had the tent to yourself 🙂 Happy trails.
Never again. SPAM is off the menu.😬
Hello from Canada! Just wanted to say I enjoy your videos. Keep em comiing!
Thanks. That's good to hear. I hope to get back out to Canada soon. Maybe next year. Cheers 👍
I will 100% do that next time. I also had cheese which I should have added but forgot. Thanks for the tip 👍
Well done on not swearing when you dropped the cutting board twice lol. Chop em at home be easier …see you on the next one buddy hope the back gets better. Atb Coops 👍🏻🚴
Cheers Coops. I am amazed I remained that calm. It must be a getting to 50 thing!! The back is nearly back to normal.
Great to see another video - lots of cool stuff for the bike! Hope your back soon improves.
My back is already getting better thanks. It's strange how nothing caused it and nothing has cured it...Cheers 👍
I do like the look of that Click Stand. I'll have to nick that idea off you too :)
It's one of the greatest things ever invented. I nicked the idea off Bill so that's ok. Cheers 👍
I think Pop Tarts could solve your tummy problems.
Sounds interesting. I'll look these up. Thanks for the advice 👍
This has never before been said by anyone. I'm certain. Cheers 👍
It's almost like your body need to keep moving. I can't imagine the stresses of an ultra run though.
Might also pack 7 beers in the panniers just before we enter the mountains/point of no return 😊
Needless to say I’m not packing light.
Sounds good. I'll look those trails up. Good luck with everything and thanks for commenting 👍
That was a lovely video - Thanks for that. I like the tarp idea, particularly as I think I need something to keep the bike dry…great stuff
Thanks. The tarp is a definite win. Mine doesn't take up much room and is pretty lightweight.
The comedy sketch with your veg on the floor made me laugh😂
Hopefully your back has improved for your next outing. 😊
Think you should cook a crumble next time😋
Mmm crumble.....Good idea. The back is a lot better thanks 👍
Thanks for the video, really cool!
Thanks for watching 👍👍
Cheers 👍
@@matryderadventures Agreed, age does seem to mellow folks. :)
I believe the pepper fell within the 5 second rule.
It was within 5 seconds, although my rule is more like 5 minutes 🤣
Brilliant cookery show! 😂
Well thankyou!!! I am hoping for Michelin star at some point. Cheers...
Great work on your channel! you grow so fast :)
Thanks. It's grown much quicker than I imagined. Cheers 👍
Cheers.
Must be difficult to find a place to hide and wild camp. Scotland!
It is tricky. It annoys me that it's not allowed in England/Wales. I'll be spending more time in Scotland next year. Cheers 👍
I wouldn’t call it a strange video. I’d call it a good video. Lots of information. A cooking sketch 😂 well done mat
Thanks. My cooking will improve....I hope. Thanks for commenting.
You need some of the other firebox items to cook with to go along with the firebox stove
I agree. I'm going to have a look this evening. I don't need much encouragement to buy new stuff. Cheers 👍
Cheers 👍
Great video again, hope your back is better soon. FYI Grizzly bear attack in Canada's Banff National Park kills 2 yesterday.
I'm already feeling a lot better thanks. Another attack!! They seem to be happening more and more often.

ooo have to watch this
I started ultra light weight was 14kg with all gear and bike ..but the last few years i moved to more heavy and more durable gear .. i call it trail and error when i test gear lol best tip i can give focus on the core setup which stays the same and just change outer for difffrent style of trips … i moved completely away from front fork cages and front fork bags and bottle bike just feels better
Good tip. I'll try to do the same. I'm not going to use front panniers and I'll try keeping the weight on the rack to a minimum. It's just there for when I have a long distance between resupplies. I just hate having a bag flopping around on the handlebars. Cheers 👍
@@matryderadventures if you plan to buy any new gear just ask i problemly own it or have used it in the pass might save you some money
I will. Thanks 👍
Cheers 👍
I don't feel confident with my Carbon fork ,I'm going to try a Surly Krampus fork . I hope your back is better .
The back is fine now thanks. I know what you mean about the fork.
Hi Matt,
This is my fist time commenting on RUclips.I had watched this video some time ago and thought hum interesting.
Interesting. I think I'll give it a week or so. I seem to be getting back to normal. How was the Wolf Way? I'm definitely going to do it. Cheers.
I love the channel. See your chopping board.. I use scissors to cut food straight into pot or pan for me easier.
Good idea. I think I'd better do the same. That makes perfect sense. Thanks for the tip 👍
Hi Mat! I enjoyed watching your gdmbr adventure, thanks for those videos!
What size tyres you are running here? 29ers 2,5?
Hi. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have 27.5 x 2.6". They worked out well. The smaller diameter gave me better clearance for mud etc. Thanks for watching 👍
Hi Mat, how do store your bike when you use your van to sleep in, meals, etc?
It's a tight fit when I sleep. It just fits beside the bed. When I'm cooking/eating I lock it to the rear step. It's not ideal but works.
Only issue with tailfin is their bags are heavy to comparable quality products from other companies.
Maybe. I like the Aeropack set up and just decided to go with something compatible. I know you can use other panniers on that too.
I got a few Titanium pans from different companies unfortunately they all fail that have non stick coating on them .. just dont work well together ie Titanium and non stick coating …
I should have held off. I have one now. I won't expect much.

What bike GPS did you use for your Great Divide ride? It would be a great if you made a video or short explaining how you select the bike GPS you choose.
I used a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt. It was a choice between Wahoo and Garmin and it was the simplest option. I only wanted a basic 'follow this line' solution.and it worked perfectly. Cheers 👍
Hi Matt, what riding footwear did you use for the GDMBR. Thanks
I can't remember the model but they were 5:10 Free rider's. I think they were the Pro flat. They held up really well. Cheers 👍
Hi Mat great video .Just wondering what brakes do you have on your bike and how they performed on GDMBR.
Hi. I have the SRAM G2 R hydraulic brakes. They worked flawlessly. No issues, no leaks, easy to change pads. Highly recommended. Cheers 👍
What size and make are the rear bags you have? They look like they can hold a good amount of gear.
I have a Tailfin Aeropack with 2 X 10 litre panniers on the back. It's good stuff. A bit expensive but very well made.
Cheers 👍
Mat, sorry , how many days to get from Banff to US border ? On the 5th day of travel , yes?
I believe it was day 5. Are you planning on riding that bit?
Had a friend hike from the border to Jasper this past summer. Riding the same or at least to Banff , has my attention for 2024
Sounds good. It's a great section with some really nice, quiet campsites.
What brand is the bike
I have a Sonder Broken Road.
Mat I am going to do the European Divide next August North to South.. let me know if you want to join ;-)
Starting in August to avoid the mosquitos.. check out Ryan V D Swedish trip where he meets Bike Touring Mike who tells him August is the best (or better time). Any how 2 months will get me in Spain / Portugal end Sept/Oct.
The whole thing? What sort of pace are you thinking of? I've watched some of RVD's videos on that trip. It looks really good.
Like your tour divide pace 😎
I'll get back to you. I have a lot of routes on my list but need to start planning next years diary!! The European Divide is pretty high up on the list.
This guy has the fastest known time I am thinking 2 months plus, start in August for more stable weather and less mosquitoes, finish in Oct. I have almost the same setup as you bike wise.
Did you use the smc gel or the smc sport?
I have the SMC Men. It's the MTB touring saddle. Not the gel.
Thanks Mat! Enjoying your laid back content.
Me and you really need a chat Mat.
Uh oh..I agree. I know you know your stuff. When's your next video out? .I'll message you and we'll sort something out.
I think you have the type of verbal and analytical skills to do superb reviews.
I think your probably honest as well, until you get 1 million subscribers and get out of control.
On the SPAM, you could put it a mile away from the campsite to attract bears, that leaves the veggies for you.
Bon apetit.
Thanks. It's nice to hear that I have any skills!! I may do the odd review. Cheers 👍
Keep moving bro. My back is always at its best when I’m moving. Maybe you should knock the twerking lessons on the head for a while too.
But you know how I enjoy it. How else will I relax 😞
You should open a restaurant
Only if you promise to dine there??? I didn't think so....
The rack in the basket seem redundant… Just saying
You may be right. I think I could do without the basket and may try. It depends on how mount the bag.
Its hard not to feel that if your bags are not inline w the bike and you have panniers, you are touring not bikepacking.
Probably. I don't really think about it to be honest. Bike touring is fine by me.
