@asian dude RuPaul became famous by doing drag shows. He and Lady Bunny used to live together in abandoned apartments in New York when they were poor and young and while both doing nightly shows at gay clubs back in the days when these shows were not popular like today and hardly payed any money. He became so famous doing them that he met some music producers who created his first hit single Supermodel..which became a number one hit worldwide. After doing music for many years..he created his production company WoW (World of Wonder) and then created his show RuPaul's Drag Race and other shows..which made him the multi-millionaire he is today. Hard work and perseverance is why he is the most famous drag queen artist today. Nobody gave him anything. He worked for it and created something out of nothing. The end.
Ru looked so broken after those comments. And he went straight too a cigarette. This shit is heartbreaking. He wasn't talking as much as he did before that, wasn't living for the camera nothing. Broken.....
In some ways, yes, in some ways no. If you're a drag queen stuck in a lower income black or Latino today you'd pretty still have much of the same experience. The main difference now is that New York is much more cleaned up so these populations themselves have been pushed further and further to the fringes of the city.

Antonio Caban I read that Nelson Sullivan, the fellow who made these videos, died fairly young and quite unexpectedly (Heart attack, if I recall.) which makes me wonder: Did he have a will, or at least directives, in place as to who inherited these videos? They obviously ended up in the hands of someone he could trust to know what best to do with them? Were these videos part of one of Nelson's larger community art projects or were they just a personal record? Whatever the answers may be, it's wonderful that this record of NYC prior to Giuliani's reign of terror, that murdered the cultural life blood and nightlife of the city, exists. Thank you Nelson.
i was only 2 yrs old :( Oh how i wish i could have been a part of that time!! In my highschool days i was obsessed with anything 80's! nagsheady I'll do the work I have to in the city, now, but I haven't looked for a reason to spend a weekend in the city in over 15 years. Metro Detroit has a more authentic nightlife than NYC, these days, and it makes me sad to say that.
Wow, this was 1984 - RuPaul was only 24 years old in this video. Just think of how the coming years changed for him..... he achieved international fame as a drag queen with the release of his debut single, "Supermodel (You Better Work)", which was included on his debut studio album Supermodel of the World in 1993. In 1994, he became a spokesperson for MAC Cosmetics, raising money for the Mac AIDS Fund and becoming the first drag queen to land a major cosmetics campaign. Also that year, he received his own talk show on VH1, The RuPaul Show, which he hosted for over 100 episodes, while co-hosting the morning radio show on WKTU with Michelle Visage. The rest is history you already know. Good for him. 🤩💞
Justin Wilson - 👍I know what you mean. We were children. It just goes to show a lot can change in a lifetime. It was apparent to me that he was destined for something bigger / better than the place where he was in life back then. It can happen the same for any of us. 💞

The first part of this video was so amazing, I could feel a real sense of the environment. Friends meeting up, the gritty city on a warm day, smoking cigarettes with the top down and feeling like the evening is yours with wind in your hair and you are in the middle of your own movie. Nelson is an icon. All these videos are history. He was basically the first person to vlog. Such an inspiration
RuPaul *literally* went from the streets to the height of fame, money and power. That in itself is to be celebrated!
asian dude you wouldn't?
The end.

Were these videos part of one of Nelson's larger community art projects or were they just a personal record?

He Man, She Ra, Shoulder pads, no iPhones, great music, hideously amazing fashion, yeah they weren’t too shabby.
80's were intense in both a good and bad way...
7:37 This car ride moment at night with an RnB 80s song hits different especially after they were harassed not too long ago. Their expressions especially Miss Ru tells everything but they don’t talk about the situation any further. It feels very melancholic but also oddly nostalgic, its really a scene you would expect from a movie.
Anyone kind of want to experience what it was like back then. Like even for one day.
you do not know how bad I want to go back just to see how it is, ugh like it's always on my mind
marixxi! I was born in 94 and I wiiiiiish!
I wouldn't want to be there forever though, maybe like a month at most
Can I bring my iPhone 📱 lol 😂
@@supastar97 definitely not.. ha! That's the whole point of why you kids? Probably wanna go back.. cause it's a different consciousness.. it's a different world where human to human contact us more prominent & you must be in the TOTAL MOMENT of where you are . Just living where you are in time . If you find a love interest you get to miss them but be with other people FULLY when your with other people because no-one is telepathing through a phone...
You just have to be totally where you are..
A whole different HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS CONNECTEDNESS & COMMUNICATION..
Hope that makes sense..sorry to dribble on.. just meant "NO PHONES IN THE 80s/90s lol". :-)
RuPaul rapping Chaka Khan Chaka Khan is a piece of history. That song 'I Feel For You' was a MAJOR hit back in the day. Great video of a by gone era of NYC.
This shows how homophobia hurts and drives people. Look at Rupual now. Amazing role model of forging ahead.
You mean discrimination, because the white gay guy didn't hesitate to imply all Puerto Ricans behave like that one guy.
Erok Da1 it’s new york, If you are from NY you know lmao
God I’m so sorry they had to deal with that, their faces looked so heartbroken, especially RuPaul.
