The struggle was real back then, Ru mentions it constantly. He was couch surfing, many of his friends were taken by the AIDS crisis, battling addiction and encountering pervasive homophobia. Today he's a superstar but here he was just another struggling artist with hopes and dreams.
And now people remain struggling never becoming super stars
This is when people used to be normal and since then, we have gone in the wrong direction. The internet has damaged people's minds.

Having to pretend you're unbothered while dealing with people who would want you dead never gets easier, no matter how "loudly" you're living your life. None of them deserved that.
The problem is they want THEMSELVES dead for the feelings THEY have.

This video feels so dreamy, yet a bit melancholic. These folks are putting themselves out there in ways no one ever dared to before, clearly at the risk of their safety and person hood. They're experiencing liberation _so concentrated_ that its literally impossible to replicate nowadays due to us (lgbtq+ folks that is) having far more privilege, acceptance, and power in our identities than they could have ever dreamed of in the time this was filmed. True icons, these folks.
Most people have always accepted the gay community. The problem in 2022 is that "privilege" word you used, whereby it's gone far-overboard as a political tool; it may end up...as it has begun to...creating the opposite effect.
@Mone Luve This has been common in nyc for ages. They weren't the first nor the only ones.
I abandoned the Gay Political Movement back then, luckily I did, cause now their "activists," LEFTISTS and GROOMING CHILDREN. PEDOPHILIA as an Orientation. I wonder what colour that will be on their Rainbow Flag? Always pushing the Limits No Boundaries, No Custody of The Appetites. The downfall of humanity into Western Woke Liberal Globalism. DISGUSTING, DEGERNATE and DIABOLICAL.
It's still like that in other countries.
Sorry, but this shit happens today. Go stand alone like that in Arizona.
It’s incredible to me that no one is shocked by the homophobes... they all have this expression like “just another Friday night” truly reveals what a hard life it was being gay in the 80’s.
because it wasnt that shocking at all. hard to hear, but not shocking. Hell im only 30 and i got that regularly whilst out and about in my 20s.
oh it still is, it still is extremely hard in places outside of america / first world countries.
I have a gay friend and he told me that men will randomly yell stuff at him in his boyfriend even in these days. Calling them the f word or just laughing at them. Before he said that I didn’t realize how unfortunately common it still is
It’s still hard being gay, so much of this still exists daily
They probably fucked with everyone they saw who didn't look just like them. There's so many of that type
As a gay person I intensely felt the look on their faces. Trying to seem unbothered and standing their ground, but unable to ignore the toxic garbage being spat at them. A mixture of hurt and weariness.
@Mr. Montgomery Driesell-McSmitten i feel sad that you have the need to be nasty towards other people. That, is a sign of your own weakness, with which u cant deal. Good luck with handling yourself better.
@Mr. Montgomery Driesell-McSmitten Rude is the word that should be used to explain you.
Mr. Montgomery Driesell-McSmitten You’re right in a scientific sense, but the way you choose to go about it, addressing it to this person, wasn’t necessary. You could have addressed it in a batter manner.
@Mr. Montgomery Driesell-McSmitten Thanks for commenting!
Mr. Montgomery Driesell-McSmitten not that you shouldn't have commented at all, it's just that initially stating your point by coming off as an insult was not needed. You could've phrased it a little differently is all

@asian dude RuPaul became famous by doing drag shows. He and Lady Bunny used to live together in abandoned apartments in New York when they were poor and young and while both doing nightly shows at gay clubs back in the days when these shows were not popular like today and hardly payed any money. He became so famous doing them that he met some music producers who created his first hit single Supermodel..which became a number one hit worldwide. After doing music for many years..he created his production company WoW (World of Wonder) and then created his show RuPaul's Drag Race and other shows..which made him the multi-millionaire he is today. Hard work and perseverance is why he is the most famous drag queen artist today. Nobody gave him anything. He worked for it and created something out of nothing. The end.

Wow this video is great! Really takes me back! I love all of the music that is playing on the radio in the car. Perfect.
A moment in time captured. Such a gift to the world that we have this.
That driver is daddy
I would have had such a crush in him.
It's the "Flock of Seagulls," hair. ❤️

Thanks for posting this
Ru is an incredibly interesting and beautiful person to the eye. Such a look and those cheekbones, just naturally gorgeous
she looked so troubled in those days. it shines a new light to me and others who just know ru from drag race. she was no doubt reciting the lines "if you can't love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love yourself?" to herself her whole life!! and that's how you get to be THE drag superstar
barbara zamolodchikova you mean... HE haha
barbara zamolodchikova he*
Diego Lopez *she
barbara zamolodchikova also you misquoted ru, darling
barbara zamolodchikova A Little correction. It's :
"If you can't love yourself,
how the hell you gonna love someone else"
This is like a freaking time machine. I was blessed to be able to say I lived in that era. I was 14 in 1984. Too young to hang out with that crowd but old enough to experience living in that year. I am hooked on these vids. Literally, a time machine. Thank you for sharing.
I lived in NYC during 1985, and yes, the video seems to evoke the same magic I remember...the raw, tapped energy running through the streets on foot and in car...I miss it.
Antonio Caban I read that Nelson Sullivan, the fellow who made these videos, died fairly young and quite unexpectedly (Heart attack, if I recall.) which makes me wonder: Did he have a will, or at least directives, in place as to who inherited these videos? They obviously ended up in the hands of someone he could trust to know what best to do with them? Were these videos part of one of Nelson's larger community art projects or were they just a personal record?
Whatever the answers may be, it's wonderful that this record of NYC prior to Giuliani's reign of terror, that murdered the cultural life blood and nightlife of the city, exists.
Thank you Nelson.
i was only 2 yrs old :( Oh how i wish i could have been a part of that time!! In my highschool days i was obsessed with anything 80's! (I even brought a boombox to school on my shoulder with depeche mode enjoy the silence playing super loud) . The kids looked at me suspiciously. I had a blast! At every school dance i ALWAYS requested 80's songs. hahha oh memories.
***** I love your words "It's wonderful that this record of NYC prior to Giuliani's reign of terror, that murdered the cultural life blood and nightlife of the city, exists.". Ditto - this is great stuff.
I did not know that Nelson Sullivan died. I just assumed that he was the one who uploaded these gems.
nagsheady
I'll do the work I have to in the city, now, but I haven't looked for a reason to spend a weekend in the city in over 15 years.
Metro Detroit has a more authentic nightlife than NYC, these days, and it makes me sad to say that.
Damn Ru looks GOOD!!! Beautiful moment in history. So glad these videos are still around.
This is so great thank you so much sure miss those days ❤
Nelson was a pure genius! Even filming the trash. Never missing a detail. No other video will ever be as iconic as Nelson’s videos.
There's something really magical here. A style, a time, that for better or worse will never be seen as it was again.
Thank you to Nelson, who may have only been recording a night out with pals for fun and RUclips, for being a place these moments may be archived for those who remember or would never see these days.
Joseph Dillman magical? No, just disgusting
our voices will never be silenced, the battle cntinues to be who we want to be. LGBTQ!
As a lonely millennial watching this in 2021 I'm jealous of their close friendship. But I also understand it was necessary for survival.
Doesn't mean you don't need friends, too!
You have friends. Look carefully.
The 80s were actually magical. You couldn't really reach your friends...you just showed up where you thought they'd be. I was a punk, and we were also harassed, beaten up, threatened. But we had each other
Ive never seen Rupaul so reserved and quiet. This was so sad, i cant imagine how that made them feel. Great Tunes though 80s music was awesome!!
They didn't really caRe 4long . . Those little boys didn't mean a thing 👍
