Now you assume the coffee shop has a name brand espresso machine worth many thousands of dollars, whereas the little machine this guy has just costs a small fraction of that, however I'm also assuming it's like every normal shop I go to, where almost none of these precise steps are followed, so despite the much more expensive machine, you would never have such a quality shot, or else you'd be paying some premium price. But I'm just reckoning with a $2.50 shot (although here in the city in Nashville it could easily be more). If this man's whole setup cost $3k (which is a real high-ball estimate) and drink on average 2 shots per day (which is low for a coffee drinker, and very, very low for even just a Finnish citizen), and would otherwise pay $2.50, then your break-even would come in less than 600 days of using the machine, probably far less. If you think this is over-engineered or over-priced, look into how much maintenance a real espresso machine takes! Or just look at a schematic! And honestly, do you think you could even find a shop that offers such a quality espresso? It would have to be such expensive coffee right? Which takes the break-even down to a matter of months, maybe weeks. But I doubt you could pay to get it anywhere even if you wanted to... or you would have to travel to one of the few places that offers it! And all that's not to mention if this channel and these purchases are profitable and write-off-able assets with long lives and relatively un-costly maintenance, making the break-even point more minuscule, even if you decide to do something crazy like trash (not re-sell) and replace every piece of the setup every 3 years for whatever newest model, which of course you wouldn't need to do... but just to show you absolutely could given how affordable this is to buying very moderately priced shots. And you could run this whole thing against even cheap-ass shots and it still would be very feasible

People complaining about this should realize its a hobby like any other. Yeah its overcomplicated by most people's standard but the process is soothing and it brings involvement and appreciation in brewing an espresso. Remember folks, respect the hobbies of others, or even better, learn to appreciate it too.
I admire people who can relax while making espresso, cooking, or baking. All of these things get me into a sort of stress flow state that's anything but relaxing. I try to stop and slow down, enjoy the process, all that, doesn't work for me

Both focus on the relaxation of symmetry and the calmness of the process but one relies on technology while the other is much more low tech. Neither are really my kind of thing but outside looking in, it does strike some similarities.

it's because all the coffee people they see on youtube are slow and methodical, theres a bunch of little tools, and the elevator music sets it off. they've never seen how fast a good workflow can be, and have never tasted the difference between a bad and a good shot side by side. i think most people assume every time he makes coffee he takes 40mins, in reality, grinding takes >20secs, distributing and tamping takes however long you want but can be done in 5 secs easily, actually pulling the shot should take 25-30secs. coffee ready in less than a minute

@@bookies24k8I make a cortado every morning for my girlfriend and that consists of weighing the beans, grinding, then I purge the grinder, line my basket with paper filter (I have one of those nano baskets that requires a filter for flow) I brew the coffee, weight my milk, steam it, clean the machine, make the drink and clean everything up. All this takes 15 minutes and I have a moon raker for faster distribution. It’s not a fast process. If you look at how people brew coffee in coffee shops, even those super professional shops barely weigh their coffee and does little to no distribution. It’s a lengthy process there’s no denying in that but it’s a lengthy process that I enjoy doing every morning and the outcome is probably the best coffee I’ve ever had.
The grinder is the EG-1 from Weber workshops and it costs an obscene amount of money: $3900 before any optional add-ons. You can get grinders that'll work 95% as well for right around a tenth of that
@@alp627 there are admittedly surprisingly few flat burr grinders at around the 350-400 mark unfortunately, but you are right. really though i'd say to go even cheaper and get a solid conical for around 70-100, and spend that extra 3-400 on a better machine. unless you're a coffee shop pulling hundreds of shots a day, no one is gonna notice the difference between conical and flat
@@firecross625 I recently upgraded from a baratza encore to a DF64, and I disagree: it's a flat burr grinder that I picked up for $400, and I've been getting noticably better shots, even after I tried calibrating the encore down to as fine as it would allow. It's also much better in terms of ground retention, and way easier to keep clean. I was often losing as much as 1.2 grams of coffee per grind, and I'd have to bang the sides of it like crazy to try and get the retained grinds out when set really fine, which was really obnoxious
