Indeed, as a car salesman in NM, we dont have rust problems, like you have to try hard to make your car rusty here. Though There are some 'salty' areas, Taos for example during winter etc. But by and large, NM is a decent state to buy cars in. I live in iowa. I’ve seen cars as young as 2013 with visible rust around the wheel wells. Finding an older car (90-05) is pretty rare. We have extremely hot and humid summers and very harsh winters. My area had the roads re salted every 7-10 days. All year round, with the only exception being one month of fall, our cars are being eaten alive by salt and humidity. I daily drive a 93 dodge caravan that my dad gave me that I’ve modded a little bit with a turbo and I fixed a lot of the rust. I get more looks than a brand new sports or muscle car, it’s exceedingly less common.
When you live in Finland and traveled south, half of the European continent to Germany to buy Miata and its still rusting away. Im literally writing this comment from underneath the car while chaning the rear brake line which had rusted to hell in just 20 years in central Europe.
I know the feeling. I have a 182 clio with light rust on the sills. It's not too bad but it is unavoidable after 16 years. The rear brake disks are going due to rust and the calipers have already been changed for the same reason though
When looking at a used vehicle, remember that all accidents aren't reported. Check panel gaps, look under the hood and under the trunk liner for signs of a collision repair. Tape lines, welds that aren't from the factory. Undercoating or seam sealer covering repairs is common. If you're not sure what to look for, you can pay certain shops a small fee to inspect it for you. Also check the fluids before starting the vehicle. Make sure the engine is cold. If the engine is warm, it might have a problem and it might have been warmed up so it runs better when you arrive. Check around the engine, transmission, and under the vehicle for signs of leaks. Check the suspension for rust, dents, new parts, signs of something rubbing, and also for moisture which can mean a bad strut. I know it's a long post, and I still left out a lot, but it might help.
YES 603 REPRESENT. When Nolan said “the answer may surprise you” I was like NEW HAMPSHIRE! But then I was like, there’s NO way. Salt salt salt. But hey! Guess it pulled through! I bought my first car here in NH. 2009 Subaru Forester, $7500. I have since put an additional 4K+ into it. It was basically a lemon. But things are stable now.
There's a reason there are people that take their trucks and trailers to Florida, buy enough cars to fill up their trailer, and come home and flip them. Here no rust is a premium and there no rust is expected. A $6k used car here is like $3500 or so there.
Why wasn't SD included in that list? Our winters are harsh and our streets suck come spring time as a result. I've seen plenty of salt/gravel trucks going around so we are not driving on a sheet of ice.
Lived in Florida for the first 30 years and can confirm after living in Portland, Or the last 3 years that Florida is much cheaper to buy cars overall. One thing to consider in FL is sun damage. I owned 6 s13s, one z31, an e30 and an e36 and the sun absolutely destroys, paint, dashboards, and adhesives used to hold German interiors together. To scale still probably better than the rust belt
The answer to the question is FL, Orlando. Best prices, never snows, far enough inland to avoid sea salt, but unfortunately you still can't swing Disney with the savings.
They are actually mostly a used car dealership. Currently they have one new car in stock, and it's actually an Alfa Romeo. They have been a large volume used car dealership for a long time, but recently decided to start carrying Maserati and Alfa Romeo. But... Idaho does have a fairly large number of people with more money than brains, so there are lots of expensive cars driving around.
One thing to look at is shipping a car to your state. For an expensive sports car it maybe better to buy it in FL, TX, or NY and then have it shipped. Shipping fees have come done quite a bit do to the Rona. I know I was looking at a 996 in AZ and the shipping was only 500 bucks to S. FL, with a good company.
Despite your assessment of Alabama, I live here and can say without a doubt, we have more vehicular freedom than just about any other state. Zero inspections. I can get a tag for ANYTHING, as long as there is a vin number somewhere. That is no exaggeration. Like, tube frame NASCAR with a vin plate ziptied to the A-pillar. No problem. You get a tag! And insurance! Drive it to work, no problem!!

well, now you know where to shop for a used car if you ever decide to stay in america for a year or longer... after all the bullshit here settles down anyways XD
Buying a used car anywhere in the US sounds like a good deal to me. Where I’m from (Singapore) has the most expensive car taxes in the world. My 5-yr old Audi A3 with 65,000km cost me US$46,000 and my wife paid US$98,000 for a new Mercedes A180 last November!
Did you check the oil and coolant? We need more specifics to tell if it's your fault or the previous owners. I blew up a 2020 f450 at 400 miles being a dick
matthew anderson Yup lol. Even paid for a pre-purchase inspection at a different ford dealer. Something punched a hole in the bottom of the case. They think it had something to do with an engine mount.
Harry currently trying to work that out. I bought it from a pretty small dealership. Shitty thing is legally they don’t have to. If they do it’s from the kindness of their heart. 7.5k for a new engine with labor
Having been born and raised in Wyoming, and registering several vehicles there, the registration is based on the factory price of the vehicle. When I registered my truck in Wyoming, it was almost $2000 a year. Wyoming also doesn't have smog or inspection.
Honestly, I feel like he’s completely wrong for the Los Angeles area. LA is definitely the biggest auto-based community in the entire US. Everyone owns a car there and there’s like 10 million cars in one county.
Donut is in LA though so fees are gonna be fuckin insane. Up in the central valley and near Sacramento its a lot cheaper. Bought both my 240s and my z up here
TT&L depends largely on where you live not where you buy. I sell cars in Montana, and we charge people for their states taxes. Personally, if I were shopping for a car my #1 choice would be AZ and NM. Warm, no big weather events (like floods and hurricanes in FL), and older population that takes care of their cars + a pretty decent inventory since there are some big population centers
With my experience, there’s definitely classic cars in South Carolina. It’s actually kinda hard to miss them sometimes. Every now and then, I’ll see a 70s F-100, or ‘68 Mustang Fastback, and there’s even a guy I pass regularly with a yellow hot rod.
a rental car would be better than a leased car. Rental cars are serviced on time and frequently, whereas most leased cars I've worked on at my dealership are abused as fuck and rarely maintained
Outta Wisconsin here, was looking at an older subie. Opened the rear passenger door and saw some surface rust, poked it with my finger and about a 6" hole just appeared. Winter is rough man, my rear sway bar is rusting away and any bolts on the underside have been fused to the chassis.
i live in alabama and got a 91 LS400 for a STEAL 2k and 130k miles, no rust only a slightly damaged front fender, back bumper paint is chipping away, and clear coat is peeling, but still a deal considering most LS400s in a 200 mile radius were 3-4k with 2-300k miles
Being a fellow American born and raised in Chicago, IL sharing this country with so many regions of people I just assume other people understand the idealisms of being in a wintery climate from seeing snow, to experiencing salt on the roads, to cars getting rusty over time, and knowing how to manage driving in snowy conditions... during that time of year of course. It just always blows me away when people, AMERICAN PEOPLE speak so obliviously about snowy/icy winter life. Having never seen snow, doesn't know what it's like to drive on ice/snow, has no idea about the rust from salt... I mean I understand, it's just mind blowing to me! We live in the same country!!! But like I said, I understand... I have also never been through a desert and have never seen a wild alligator or scorpion, nor have I ever been to a bayou. So... we're even.
I'm living in the salt belt and can confirm, my car is rusty af ;-; Only a matter of time till I get a hole in my floor. Wish I could afford to get my car's rocker panels fixed.
I've been looking for a used car for about the last month now here in Maryland. It's insane how the documentation fees range is different for each state! I've seen from $245 to about $900. That's a big gap. It should just be a standard fixed cost.
Me: Expecting New Hampshire to be expensive and also have no good inventory* "New Hampshire is the second lowest total price for used cars" Literally me and everyone else from NH: 😮
yeah but california cars are some of the cleanest as far as rust goes. I'd rather pay more than not have to deal with unseen rust later. Now I don't envy your smog testing ;)
@@freakymrq It helps that there are also trend-chasers who keep cycling out their cars over there. You could even buy a hardly used last-year model with all the bells and whistles for cheaper than buying the same package deal off a "new old stock" car lot, assuming some are still available.
Sun damage should be taken into account also. Those Southwest states you listed as being great for used cars can have a negative effect on premature rubber seals, hoses and interior wear. I bought a used Honda in Oregon that was a transplant from Arizona. I had to replace all hoses (including the vacuum), belts and the window seals were leaking. Oregon, by the way, has low DMV fees and no sales taxes to worry about. The rust is minimal except on the coast and the central part of the state is very dry.
I’m from Mississippi and I almost was scammed into getting a title washed Silverado about 3 years ago in Louisiana. Unbelievable how well they hide it. Ive only bought from Texas and Tennessee.
ive lived in Minnesota all but my life, no one outside of the rust belt (we dont call it the "salt belt") has any idea what rust looks like, or how much rust vehicles can handle before literally being unusable due to rust (a very common cause for old cars to go to the junkyard here) i remember when i drove my truck to washington state to go to school, and when there i sold it. it was what we would consider "fairly rust free". the person i was selling it to brought it to a mechanic for a once over, the mechanic was astonished it was even on the road with "that much rust". the rust belt is a terrible place to live if you like older cars....although theres a reason almost all of my cars and trucks have cost under $1000
The (alphabetical) map of the “northeast” had me dying! I must add, though, that Kentucky ain’t the south. It’s above the Mason-Dixon Line and was never “officially” a confederate state. They do have a sh¡tload of nice looking used trucks and way more rebel flags flying than necessary. Also, according to your logic, Tennessee would be the best place to buy a used first generation Saturn, no?
Being someone who's lived in quite a few states, it was cheapest to buy my car in Montana, cheapest to insure in Arkansas, worst upkeep in Wisconsin, and surprisingly most expensive overall in Florida due to high insurance.

The rear brake disks are going due to rust and the calipers have already been changed for the same reason though
lol god with u bruh
Maybe try spain next time, still snow on the roads in germany also almost any car will rust after 20 year anyway.
"just 20" It's 20 fucking years man what the hell.
@@huleyn135 How many 2000s cars have you seen with replaced brake lines? Normally they last much more my 75 Ford Taunus even has original brake lines.

It’s called the rust belt! Where did you get “Salt belt” from?
Salt is used on snow my guy
And why the fuck are Kentucky and Virginia in it?

I bought my first car here in NH. 2009 Subaru Forester, $7500. I have since put an additional 4K+ into it. It was basically a lemon. But things are stable now.
My first car was also a 2009 Subaru Forester in nh for 5,400
Massachusetts kills cars, rust is crazy. I bought my Integra project in mass and the chassis was almost rusted out after being stored for 8 years.

I feel like potential sponsors really missed out on this one.

The answer to the question is FL, Orlando. Best prices, never snows, far enough inland to avoid sea salt, but unfortunately you still can't swing Disney with the savings.
Heat accelerates rust, why do you think the mufflers rust so quickly.

Working at a car dealership; do yourself a favor and don’t buy a fleet/rental vehicle, they take a LOT of abuse
Yh but fleet cars are always serviced on time and properly
My last car purchase was a rental fleet Mazda and it was decent for up to 250k until the transmission gave out.
a rental car would be better than a leased car. Rental cars are serviced on time and frequently, whereas most leased cars I've worked on at my dealership are abused as fuck and rarely maintained

I agree with you, the loaner cars at the dealership I work at get crashed often and come back absolutely trashed
Outta Wisconsin here, was looking at an older subie. Opened the rear passenger door and saw some surface rust, poked it with my finger and about a 6" hole just appeared. Winter is rough man, my rear sway bar is rusting away and any bolts on the underside have been fused to the chassis.

So... we're even.
