Marty Grosz now in his 80th year performs at the 1997 Mid-America Jazz Festival. He will be featured at the ARBORS RECORDS 3rd Annual Invitational in mid-January 2011. More at donwolff.com
This is Marty Grosz, a true American treasure, at his comedic, vocal, and instrumental best Marty is playing with the group he calls The Orphan Newsboys - the wonderful, late Bobby Gordon on clarinet, talented Peter Ecklund on cornet, along with top notch bassist Greg Cohen. .
I first heard a vid of Marty Grosz a few years ago but could never remember his namer. Just recently (May 2021) a vid of his 'popped up out of the blue' and and now I can watch him ad libitum... in 5 4 time ...avoiding B sharp ! i think he has a fantastic stage personality and I am surprised he is not more well known in UK. He has the kind of humour that goes down well over hear. (IMO anyway ) He's a good guitarist too !
Memories of the Cornerstone bar and jazz club, Metuchen, NJ, circa 1999. I think it was only a couple times I saw Marty and Peter together. I missed a lot of great gigs.
Brilliant. Marty needs to write a book about his life as a musician. He is a genius on the guitar but he also can create amazing pictures with his choice of words.
I have to look at this one every few months. Forget the guitar playing - if I could ever come up with an intro half this funny I could die a happy man!
Thank you, Don! You know, though, that RUclips has silently increased its ten-minute limit to fifteen? I learned this from a fellow poster, and you'll note that my recent TIGER RAG (apologies for the plug) is the new length? Cheers, and have a wonderful time at the 2011 Arbors Festival . . . !
Give this one a galaxy of DOWN BEAT stars! How wonderful that you are sharing this with us . . . may one quietly ask if there are any more performances on video by this band? The very definition of easy swing!
@swingyoucats NO-I didn't know-guess I didn't read closely enough-have posted some & will do more after I complete I LOVE JAZZ internet show on LIVE365 this week which will feature musicians at party (apologizes for the plug-now we're even).

I only looked up Marty Grosz because (you may be unaware) his father was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century- George Grosz!

It does not get better than that.

Yes-I have the entire session. Some songs may exceed the 10 minute limit so I have to cut some of the talking.

I've only discovered Marty in the last 7 years or so. Don - Is there a DVD with these performances?
@swingyoucats
More coming as time permits before Arbors Party where I will get more-I hope
Clarinetist plays like P.W. Russell, cornetist like a mixture of Rex Stewart and Wild Bill Davison. Who are they?
@swingyoucats
I was prevented from posting 11 minute video only a few weeks ago so when did this policy go into effect ?
Marty tunes Banjo tuning
Bb -lowE - F-C-G-B-D Also want to use flat wound strings
who wants to use flat wound strings?
Merci! he always tune his guitar like this or he has several tunings?
Who's that playin' Pee Wee style on clarinet? Other side men??
The late Bobby Gordon on clarinet. Not sure about the trumpet/cornet: Randy Reinhardt?
Grosz is fabulous, but I'm no big fan of Pee Wee Russell, and even less a fan of people imitating Pee Wee Russell.....
