I love how the daleks immediately become so concerned that the doctor is up to something they completely disregard rose and don’t even bother to give her a second thought
I love how UN WOKE this was back when people loved Story telling and good drama not Crap story telling and intersectional BS.
Wtf are you talking about? Jack is bi, Martha was black, there are more women than men in most episodes. Diversity was the name of the game, it just wasn't a thing that people hated on for this very short period of time.
@@zacharycoffin7310 Part of the reason it was fine then was they were actual real characters and not just put there for the sake of it like trotting out the animals at a zoo. Jack was a character who was bi. These days the character has to bi to fill some pathetic representation quota and that's all the depth the character will have. Not there to be interesting but to tick a box.
@@zacharycoffin7310 Yeah but jack was well written and didn't throw it in your face it was just his personality. Martha wasn't black for the sake of being black she was just a medical student who Happens to be black. Her skin pigment wasn't even made an issue in the show unless it was relevant to the plot.(Family of Blood ep.) where she was a maid to John Smith(doctor) in the pre WW 1 English boys school. Unlike later companions when the show started going woke ... Example... Bill Pots who had to tell you she was into girls every 5 minutes she was on screen to virtue signal. They had to write in her SJW Virtue signaling into every episode. And don't even get me started on doctor Karen, (Jodie)🤮
@deathclawjedi2627 I wonder if it had occurred to you that 'ticking a box' could also be interesting? Different points of view, dufferent experiences and approaches, are interesting. The difference with the stuff you didn't like is that you didn't like it, and if diversity is only ok for you when you're enjoying it then the problem is you.
I just love the way the Daleks hid behind reality TV shows. Now THAT's a plot.
Hell yeah! :D
Maybe the silent were there too.
+Swiftsabre Did you know they're also the production team of "Neighbours"?
+Swiftsabre Back when Doctor Who had coherent plotlines before they started doing the whole let's confused the audience to seem clever thing.
I really want to like your comment but I just can't because of how offensively true it is.
There are two reasons why the Daleks worked so well here. One, the Doctor's terror and hate clearly showed the effect they have. Second, they were treated as a big thing, built up and cleverly written. This is what I miss about the Daleks of old.
***** *cough* Series 3.

Besides, you didn't know HOW they were going to do it. And they did it too awesomely to hate.

I'm going to assume you meant the scenes written into the episode that were genuinely meant to be funny. And then I shall agree with you.
I'm sad that Christopher Eccleston, for his own reasons, decided to distance himself from the Dr. Who franchise. Because he is, in no uncertain terms, very VERY responsible for the series restart and subsequent success. Because in scenes like this, he showed without a doubt that he IS the Doctor.
he doesn't like how the high execs at BBC treated him, that's why he left :(
@@MondySpartan He also mentioned that he felt that the executives producers treated the crew poorly. But I still think he's not telling us everything that happened. Oh well, that was 13 years ago. I choose now to appreciate the uniqueness of series one as a wonderful stand alone.

Well, looking back now (2020) we can understand that the Doctor and the Daleks both somehow survived the Time War and are feeling the effects of that. The Doctor didn't know any Daleks survived, so he's naturally angry. The Daleks, however, must have discovered he was still around and so tried to hide their activities even more than they would have otherwise done.
Daleks have no emotions other than hatred and anger.

The 9th Doctor has a point. Every enemy he's come across he's NEVER had a plan and it was always his ace in the hole and should always scare them to death. One of Chris' best scenes beside the confrontation with the Emperor Dalek and the confrontation with the damaged dalek from "Dalek."

@@MovieMagic515 One of the reasons Eccleston has always been my favourite Doctor.
@@silphaer5353 I agree, gone too soon :(
If Eccleston had 3 seasons he would have been one of the greatest Doctors of all time
From just one word from the Doctor, the scene transforms from Rose being in mortal danger, to the Daleks going into a defensive craze. The relationship between Doctor and Dalek highlighted clearer than ever.
I think Christopher Eccleston deserved a longer run that just one series, anyone else think so?
Yep. Unfortunately he didn't want one. He only ever wanted to do one series, and that was as a favour to Russel T Davies to get the show off the ground, because they'd worked together before. The first series was planned from the off to end in his regeneration.
Parker8752 He wasn't originally supposed to regenerate at the end of the first series, Eccleston was contracted to do one series, so Russell wrote two endings for the episode: one where The Doctor regenerated (If Eccleston chose to leave) and one where The Doctor would see that Rose was slowly dying after absorbing the time vortex (If Eccleston had stayed.)
However Christopher Eccleston apparently didn't agree with how the show was being run and how the cast was being treated by the BBC, so he decided to leave while he had the chance.
Yep but he did the right thing and sacrificed himself to save his best friend
He had to make 50th anniversary at least !
Ace Handford Hey Shulk! Great game. I didn't know you were a fan of Docter who :P
After seeing the next few doctors and learning more about the Dalek-Doctor relationship and how terrified they are of him this scene hits even harder. This Doctor is fresh off the Time War having recently regenerated from the doctor of war. In the first episode he didn't even know what he looked like. Then the Daleks show up. After he had killed them all. After he had burnt all of Gallifrey and all the Daleks. But they kept coming back and the Timelords didn't. And this was his first encounter with an entire army of Daleks since the war. All he wanted to do was go to Earth help out, put the Time War behind him. But then the Daleks came to him not the other way around. He wants to run, to hide but they have Rose. However at the same time he doesn't want to kill again even though he hates the Daleks with all his heart. I can not even fathom the PTSD seeing them gave the Doctor. And Eccleston was magnificent in this scene especially.
I've said it before, I'll say it again.
Isn't the doctor the scariest alien in this show?
Angelus Nielson he's hands down the most terrifying.
Angelus Nielson the daleks are the most feared race in the universe but even they fear the doctor
Angelus Nielson amen to that
Eccleston does such an incredible job of showing the Doctor's pure rage. His eyes especially are so entrancing, when he tells the Daleks exactly what he is going to do to them, you can almost feel the power of the "Oncoming Storm"!
@@MrVidman14 Rose said it best: "5 million Cybermen, easy. One Doctor? Now you're scared."
Doctor: no
Everyone: say what
Rose: oh hell yeah, oncoming storm!
Cause she knows by now what kind of badass madman the doctor is
This is why Eccleston is my favorite doctor.
One of the great things about the Eccleston season is how The Doctor progressed from the rage and sadness of the Time War, somewhat going through the motions of being The Doctor to actually becoming The Doctor again. The retcon of The War Doctor actually enhances it. He really didn't believe he was worthy of the name, anymore. I'd say the turning point was "The Doctor Dances". He's so desperate for the 100% win he gets there, he really brightens up.
"Just this once, everybody lives!" still makes me tear up and I love that entire scene.
"no"
"everyone: what"
Dalek: *EXPLAIN YOURSELF!*
Eccleston was brilliant! Love the way he rolls his shoulders before defying the Daleks.
He was brilliant
1:55 "Oh will you? That's nice. hello." LOL
Two things that for me really need discussing:
1) Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor. What I love about him is how well he portrays the character just as you'd expect having just come out of the Time War. He thought he'd sacrificed his whole race, his planet, his species to save the Universe. And then the Daleks turn up. Not once, but twice. The one from Dalek was broken. It was dying. But then the Doctor encounters half a million Daleks after he has sacrificed everything. And he's fuming. Right from "oh will you now?" You get that seething undercurrent of pure undiluted rage. And that is what makes the Doctor so good.
2) The Daleks were really scary in the Eccleston Era. Because of the Doctor's reaction to them and because they kill. In Dalek, a single Dalek manages to kill countless people. In this two-parter, you see many people fall, including some characters you form real attatchments to. Not to mention when strategy says push towards the top first, they go down and massacre innocent people. It's that urge to kill combined with their credibility from the time War and the people they've killed that really makes them chilling. In Moffat, well I can't remember the last time I saw a Moffat Dalek kill someone.
Yeah, season 1-4 had excellent dalek stories. Even if they weren't the best, they truly showed the terror a single dalek could produce. Also, i think you're right. Has the moffat daleks actually killed ANYONE??? (:
The ninth doctor's development in this series is just the best. Everything has basically been leading up to this point and the finale, especially after Dalek. The Doctor says no, and it is the turning point for him in the series. He finally starts to overcome the scars that the Time War left him with and shows the Daleks all the defiance that he can possibly give them. No, he's not going to stand back and let them conquer Earth. No, he's not going to yield to them. No, he's not going to let them kill Rose. Honestly, this is one of the two biggest defining moments of Eccleston's Doctor in the two-part finale, the other one being "Coward, any day" during Parting of the Ways.
you know what I whould like one spin off episode with ecclesten were he didn't die
@@Cool70sfreak In Dalek, you saw his pain and rage. He begins to realize he could become what he hates most, topped with "You would make a good Dalek". Then we got The Doctor Dances where he does the one thing he's always trying to do, save everyone and probably experiences pure joy for the first time in centuries. Here, we have the culmination. He sees that what he sacrificed ultimately failed, but doesn't give in to the pain and rage this time. He is truly The Doctor again, and that's the Dalek's biggest weakness. That's who they fear.

Even though I'm totally a Classic Who fanboy, I am compelled to agree. This has got to be one of, if not THE most epic moment in the show.
Despite what I said earlier, I love the first season of New Who, and I wish that Eccleston had been the Doctor for two or three seasons. Instead he regenerated after 13 episodes and we got whiny, angsty Tennant.

@@harlankrissoff9966 I'm not sure. The Daleks don't fear, do they... Davros stripped them of all emotions save hatred. The Doctor taunts them that they may fear him, but I honestly struggle to believe that they could possibly fear him to the extent that they fear his rage.
Not too much later the Emperor was literally taunting the Doctor, almost goading him to use the weapon against them. This was one occasion where the Daleks beat the Doctor, since were it not for Rose the Doctor would have died with Jack
@@alexander9703 A Dalek does not simply not fear the Doctor, "if they are smart, if they have any plans to see tomorrow" ... oh wait
@@alexander9703 i would argue that the emperor is different as he is a more intelligent dalek whereas the dalek talking to him was merely a drone. weve seen several instances of daleks fearing the doctor, but to keep it simple ill list all the ones i remember through the rose times.
1. this one, obviously. they clearly worry about what hes going to do to them, else they would just make good on their threats if they really were serious.
2. the dalek in 'dalek'. yes he tried to kill the doctor at first but as soon as he saw his weapon wasnt functioning he yelled at him to keep back, why do that if he has no fear of the doctor?
3. the daleks in 'parting of the ways' - again, the drones, as the emperor was too busy with a god complex - when the doctor first showed up you could see them twitching as they looked at him, almost quivering with fear.
4. the cult of skaro, the moment they heard the doctor was nearby, recoiled in fear. and as rose put it, '5,000,000 cybermen easy, one doctor? now youre scared'
did davros try to remove every emotion besides hatred? yes. did he succeed? no. weve seen daleks be prideful, be arrogant, be fearful, be confused, be surprised, be all kinds of emotions. maybe youre right that they dont fear him to the extent that they fear his rage, but im sure you wouldnt deny that they fear the concept of the doctor at least. does that mean they may fear what he does to them and try to avoid pissing him off? i dunno, but as soon as they hear hes involved you can tell they act at least a little cautiously.

This is the best of what RTD brought to the dr who revival: the big reveal of the baddies, the doctors reaction, none of it is some kind of Easter egg for people who know all the backstory and lore. Self contained stories that were rewarding in their own right.
Back when the Daleks were actually a threat, if they captured a companion nowadays then The Doctor would just sonic the companion back to the TARDIS, before pressing a button designed to destroy all the Daleks.
That's pretty much what's happened with every Dalek story from S2 onwards.
I will kind of defend that with, in the old series, they had this problem too. In a story called Destiny Of The Daleks, The Doctor destroys Davros and the Daleks by throwing a hat.

It got close during Capaldi's run but now with Chibnall in charge, there's definitely nothing like this anymore. All we get now is disrespect to the legacy of the show.
Arguably, the Daleks have Never been Scarier than this. Not in all of New Who we’re they this intimidating. And Eccleston’s acting is just perfect
I’d say the only other time they came close was in Doomsday
One of my favourite ever Doctor Who scenes!
IMO, this has to be my favourite Who story of all time. I think so many things worked so well here, especially the Daleks. But I am not sure I can forgive the person who decided to show the Daleks in the Next Time trailer in Boom Town, because that would have really added to the cliffhanger. Still, I really love this story. The Daleks really acted how they I think they should be in this story. Cunning, cold, calculated and genuinely evil. That's my opinion anyway.
The best Dalek story ever. Even better than Genesis and Remembrance.
Yep, I said it.
Robert Lythgoe I'd go with Power but Remembrance and this are close behind.
I definitely think it is better than rememberance. They were hardly a threat in that one. Nothing is as bad as asylum or time of the doctor where they were just background noise.
+Robert Lythgoe genesis is by far the best ever followed by power
manzilla48 Both Genesis and Power are overrated.
Genesis is great, but has some bad moments and would've worked better as a four-parter whilst Power is written well, but just isn't that memorable.
I'd still say DALEK tops this by virtue of its sub-text and the way in which it handled the Dalek itself over SEGA Genesis of The Daleks and Remembrance.
But Bad Wolf/Parting of The Ways is still my top RTD Finale closely followed by the Utopia/Sound of Drums/Last of The Time Lords (which would've been the first had it not been for the fast and loose 'Jesus' ending.)
My favourite part of this scene has always been how the Daleks are absolutely convinced they have the Doctor over a barrel and he will have no choice but to submit to their demands, so when he bluntly refuses them, they literally start panicking, because there's some outside context problem they didn't factor in to their plans.
True, they still manage to inflict apocalyptic levels of damage to the Earth and almost convince the Doctor to destroy every living thing in the solar system to stop them, but this moment shows how, for all their devious plotting, the Daleks simply did not conceive of a scenario in which the Doctor would say no to them. It's brilliant.
Also, the fact that Rose gets completely ignored after the Doctor doesnt give in to their demands. Almost like that they wouldnt dare kill her now considering the daleks ha e no idea what the doctor is planning.
THIS. This scene right here. This is why Nine is fantastic.
I remember vividly my reaction to The Doctor syllogism with the Daleks. I literally stood up and cheered. My heart was racing the entire time. When he told them "No." with THAT look on his face and those stone cold blue eyes...he WAS the Oncoming Storm. He was powerful, he was strong and yes, he was hotter than HELL! You can physically SEE that Rose is thinking the same thing at that moment. 2:39 Yup, Nine was one HELLUVA Doctor. I cried so hard when he regenerated. OMG, he was fantastic!
Sure,I have my favourite Classic Who Doctors (Five, Four and Six), I loved Ten and I can't help but like 12 (even if Moffat's writing is rubbish) but Ten didn't have that fierceness in him that NIne had. You just knew he'd do whatever it took to keep Rose safe; he'd protect her. Again, I loved Ten but if I was facing down the Dalek fleet I'd take Nine as my Doctor over Ten any day. (Though, Ten and Donna were brilliant together. Absolutely brilliant.)
+Ms.CanadaUSA 10 had some great moments, but 9 is another level up again - definitely my fave of the new Docs. 12 has shown a lot of promise - reminds me of 3 & 1 - but Moffat's writing isn't giving him a chance.

episode 12 was good, but episode 13 almost nullified the effect because it was so much like a pantomime
2:44
"I'm gonna wipe every last stinkin dalek out of the sky!"
then you should have touched those two wires together to kill all the daleks when you were 4
+Captain Giratina The doctor's biggest regret.
10th doctor wasn't scared lol he was just peeing them off
Wouldn't that created a paradox though? Then again, its Doctor Who so anything like that can be explained away by "wibbly wobbly timey whimey...".
Well they events of Genesis of the Daleks actually did change how events played out. Although the Daleks were not destroyed, they're progress was stunted resulting in them not Invading the Earth in the first Doctor story "The Dalek Invasion of Earth"
Yeah, well he was young and naive then, now he's Nine so he's older.
This scene always sends a shiver down my spine it's just perfect
Ah when Doctor Who was grimdark...
This is one of the few times the Daleks seemed threatening in modern Who, the score is excellent.
Gosh i miss the 9th-10th doctor era. Eccleston was fantastic!
Goosebumps! 0:50 onwards. The music intensifying and the Doctor's hatred of them.
This clip brings back so many memories, what a come back for the show! Hard to believe this was 2005 - proper Saturday night TV and cliff hangars! Iconic, fantastic!
I think most people can agree that this is the best cliffhanger in doctor who. Maybe even all of TV.
Those goose bumps you felt?
I miss feeling those when watching this show.
Best cliffhanger of new who. Brilliant.
The sound of drums is a good one. Everything goes to sh#t.
Army of Ghosts, Utopia or Sound of Drums for me
The Satan Pit, Army Of Ghosts, Utopia cliffhangers are also all up there!
The most confusing moment in history to the Daleks.
EXPLAIIIN!
Why was it? The game station was to take humans (when they lost) to the Daleks to be converted to Daleks.
hold on what are you questioning?
Christopher Eccleston's last story is my fave DW story ever. It's brilliant, and I think over time more people are coming to regard it as one of the best.
It felt like the epitome of eccleston era
Eccleston deserves a BAFTA for this scene! 18 Years and this has aged like a fine wine!
I love how everyone, including the Daleks, are surprised when the Doctor says "no".
Am I the only one who get's chills when at 3:13 The Dalek army are chanting "Exterminate"!
2:16 the way they all look back in synchrony at him lol
Dramatic, it works.
@HQ I love it lol.
@HQ Absolutely fantastic. And you know what so were you.
If I just cancel the signal... (Dramatic music, music intensifies)
9-year old me had her mind blown in this scene.
Nine will always be MY Doctor.
Basically what the doctor is saying is:
"COME AT ME BRUH!"
Damn, if only there wasn't bad blood. Christopher Eccelston was fantastic!
Agreed
2:16
BBC: so Chris do you want to do new season?
BBC: explain your self
@@DownhillCube4 Chris: I said no
BBC: What is the meaning of this negative?
@@Kingskoto
Chris: It means "No".
the amount of chills you get from this one scene, from both the music of the reveal of the Daleks, and when you just see the might of the daleks shouting their battle cry "Exterminate!"
Nine - The Doctor who said NO!
NO! MORE!
Man, I can't wait for Eccleston to return in Big Finish.
3:15 is my favorite scene of doctor who
This has got to be the best Doctor Who scene ever. Never tire of watching it,
One of the best doctor speeches ever
1:48 cue the rage, one look at Rose is all it takes
I absolutely love how Eccleston ups the ante with every declaration of what he's going to do 2:33
Christopher Eccleston might have been the Doctor for one season back in 2005, but this scene is the quintessential moment that defined his tenure as the Ninth Doctor 😍🙌🏼 The cold response & the moment the cast turned their heads said it all 💯
2:12
That's my favourite *"EXTERMINATED"* ever
After all these years, it's really that middle Dalek, slowly turning its eyestalk back to look at the Doctor as if saying 'What the hell did you just say to me?' that kinda sells this entire scene....
The 9th Doctor is underrated
I love how this scene, unintentionally or not, parallels the Seventh Doctor talking to the Daleks (well, the Dalek Emperor) in Remembrance of the Daleks. My favourite modern Doctor paying homage to my joint-favourite classic Doctor! Fantastic!
I think this works both as simply a great moment of The Doctor being as "Doctorish" as possible, but also plays into the history of the show and the psychology of the Daleks. After so much time, no matter how foolproof their plans are, they can never be certain he won't defeat them. They will always have that fear of him
1:06 I love how the satellite camera give such a realistic dramatic out zoom of the ships LOL. Something so many satalites seem to do right. LOL
Now this is the Doctor....no please, no long discussion, just here is the line and woe to those who cross it. So far, every doctor has had this kind of scene...hope that continues.
Truly the scariest situation you can be in: antagonizing The Doctor in a way that forces him to improvise. Never make him improvise
2:43 I’m gonna put a time stamp here because I love it the way he says that.
Goosebumps. Every time.
I know Murray Gold left, but that theme should have come back.
And something else I don't have: ANYTHING TO LOSE!!!!
