Lived in Bethlehem from when I was born in 1940. Walked daily to Rosemont Elementary school and either rode the bus or walked to Nitschmann Junior HIgh until we moved to Palmerton. We live at 2116 Glendale Avenue. Our row house was one block away from Central Park and those houses are still there looking much the same. Each season before the park opened they tested the Derby Racer roller coaster. It just so happened that we would be playing right in front of the ride on the testing day. When they were sure it was safe someone would ask, “Hey, you kids want to help test the ride?” SO, of course, we said no. Wrong! We rode it without stopping for at least a half hour. It was our yearly treat.
