The task: read a novel from every year of your life in chronological order with no author represented more than once.
The rules: No novel that you have read before. No non-fiction. No story collections. If you DNF a novel, you must replace it with another from the same year. You can stretch out the challenge for as long as you like and read whatever you want between novels that you tag as challenge entries.

1973 - Black Girl Lost by Donald Goines
1974 - Jack Carter's Law by Ted Lewis

1977 - The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCollough
1977 - A Spell for Chamelion by Piers Anthony
1977 - Bloodline by Sidney Sheldon

"I'll try to read at least one book a month."
One month later:
"I finished challenge." 😁🤣
😂😂😂
This sounds like so much fun! That means an additional 61 books😂
Enjoy!
Great idea! I was born in 69 .I.can remember my mum reading harold robbins ,catherine cookson ect .I'm going to be browsing for hours!
You’ve intrigued me. I’ve got 20 years on you so it looks like my 1st book will be “Casino Royale”, i.e. James Bond #1.
That sounds like a fun start!
@@CriminOllyBlogThanks. Yeah, since I’m looking at 71 books I figured shorter ones would be a good idea 🤣🤣. I’ll probably read “I Am Legend” (Richard Matheson) for #2.❤
This is a cool idea, but 57 books would be one whole year of reading for me. I’d have to be very careful with my choices.
Try 75 books. Yesterday was my 75th. Great idea, but….
Happy belated birthday!
I like this idea, I was born in 1961 so as a quick experiment I listed the books I'd like to read from the 60's and now it got my interest. I already own most of these so I'll work through and see how I feel about carrying on when I'm done with the first decade.
1961 Call For The Dead, John Le Carre
1962 Something Wicked This Way Comes, Ray Bradbury
1963 The Grifters, Jim Thompson
1964 The Deep Blue Good-by, John D MacDonald
1965 The Ambassador, Morris West
1966 When Eight Bells Toll, Alistair Maclean
1967 Unnatural Causes, P D James
1968 True Grit ,Charles Portis
1969 The Godfather, Mario Puzo
I like this challenge, I'll have to do it. I was born in '79, and I've already read Kindred, so I'll have to pick something else to start off with.
Well, as I've been wanting to catalog all my unread books, this seemed like a perfect time to do that and see what will fit into this challenge.
Since you posted this video I've gotten that done and was amazed that I was able to find a book for every single year from 1972 to present in my shelves. A little scared also. Am I a hoarder????? 😂
No. The answer is a vehehemt no! 😬
So I guess I'll be starting this next month. It'll be slow going....a lot of them are chonkers. Thanks for the idea.
Mine is going to be a lot of 00s books then 😄 I was born in '03. Such a cool idea!!
That is a very fun challenge! Not sure I have that kind of span to fit every year, especially without repeating authors or books I haven’t read yet. I’ll have to skim my shelves! Hope you enjoy all of the ones you’ve got picked!
This is going to be a pretty awesome one, I think. I may give it a try myself! Love your picks, especially Goines and Morrell.
They're both great writers!
The first reading challenge that I actually like the idea of. First read for me published in 1965, Roseanna.
I read that last year, it’s a good one!
Very interested to hear your thoughts on Requiem For A Dream! The film adaptation is by far the most disturbing and horrifying as well as depressing film I have ever seen… and I think it’s a masterpiece.
Very good idea. Don't know if I'll be able to do it (being older adds books to the challenge) but I know I'll have a great time going through my books to write the list. ❤📚
This is a great challenge, Olly. I uploaded my video this morning. 😊
Good luck with it!
Olly, this is a terrific idea for a challenge. It will take me awhile but I'll enjoy it none the less. Thank you.
I can't claim credit for it, but I do think it's really fun
Ooh an interesting challenge. My first thought was to read all the Booker Prize winners from each of my 42 years
This sounds like a lot of fun, thanks for sharing the idea!
It's a really good concept. I was born in April 72 around a year exactly before you. I've read Shogun when I was in my twenties. I think it took me two weeks. I liked the new Disney series but it wasn't better than the book. As for Sidney Sheldon. I read most of his in the eighties and nineties. His best we're the Kane and Abel trilogy. I really fancy this book a year task. I'll have to set some time aside and choose my 52 books. Cheers Ollie
You unlocked my curiosity with this challenge. So I googled popular fiction published in 1951. Catcher in the Rye caught my eye so I bought it. Then I searched 1952. OMG! There’s The Old Man and the Sea so I bought it. Then 1953. Gosh! The Long Goodbye. Cha-ching. 1954. Lord of the Flies added to the library. Well, it looks like I’m down for the challenge now. (And I’ve never bought more than two books in one day, either.) Thanks for the grand idea!
Thank you! I'm starting with 1951 as well and these are well written novels. So, looking forward to doing this challenge though it will take awhile to get through, still will enjoy this challenge.
@@lovenature7823 This challenge will solve the problem of not knowing what to read next…. maybe for the rest of my life. (I’m still gonna read other stuff, too.)
Totally stealing this idea. Nice one!
Absolutely love this idea. Back to the 60s I go 😊
I love this challenge! I’m definitely joining along.
This is an interesting idea for a reading challenge. I hope it goes well for you, and I'm looking forward to your updates on it.
What an interesting idea, have fun!
Yeah I think it’s a fun concept
Really want to hear your thoughts on Shogun. I inherited the book from my dad in the 70s as a teenager and read it then. Loved it.
Y'know, I never thought about this challenge. I started in 83. That's a lot of books to dive into. But it might be fun. I should give it a shot.
Hope you enjoy iy if you do it!
The Thorn Birds and Kindred are both really good reads. I might do this challenge too!
what a great challenge! I'm amazed that you have a book from each of those years. I'm not sure I have more than one book from the whole of the 1970s.
Sounds like a fun challenge!
Excellent idea. I think you will enjoy this as will we following along.
I love this idea! I’m just afraid it would take me the rest of my life! 😂😳
I love this challenge! I'm a year older than you, so I'll just back up to 1972 and then listen to your books for a few ideas from there. Have you read Watership Down? That was published in 1972 and I know it's an award winner, so I could start with that one.
You do feature some fantastic ideas for reading challenges.
Same here on Shogun…I was enjoying it 100 pages in and quit it for no reason
That does sound like fun. I doubt I could do a book for each year from 1965 to now before my birthday in October unless I have up other things, and I would want to include nonfiction. But I like the concept.
Kindred is excellent, if harrowing in places. Good luck with your challenge. I am going to borrow this idea, or something quite like it, for my sci fi channel. I'll give due credit when I get around to kicking it off. 👍
Sounds like a massive project to me. I am just trying to read the books on my kindle I have not read. It was seven but after finally finishing Sawn Song I am down to six. I also seriously have to finally get around to reading all the dark tower and that is it for major projects for this year. I will be lucky to finish one of them.
Great challenge, although being 66 I have got to start from 1958. Funnily enough, I have got Shogun on my July tbr.
75 books? From 1949 on. I may not have that much time left!
You can do it!
Probably a better place to post this. But, the Kindle version of Tell Me I'm Worthless is on sale if you're like me and it's been on your wishlist since Olly raved about it.
That's good to know!
An interesting idea, quite fancy joining in. My 70's picks are The Doll Who Ate His Mother by Ramsey Campbell, The Black Charade by John Burke, The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons & Ghost Story by Peter Straub. I never knew the movie was based on a novel so I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on Requiem For A Dream.
I want to read The House Next Door as well. I’m considering buying the Centipede Press edition. They are pricey but beautifully put together. I have Maynard’s House by them and was very impressed with it.
@@tyler2610 Think i might read Maynard's House as my pick for 1980
The House Next Door is great.
@@halifirien great, I ordered it yesterday so I'll look forward to reading it
Very cool challenge. Maybe I should plan for it next year as I turn 50.
I already reported out on my book 1 in your discord. I have an additional layer added to the whole in that I need to own all the books to date. So I spent some time with various resources and I have a working list. We'll see how it goes.
Book 1, which I love, is My Brother Michael, by Mary Stewart.
Love this. I might take it up with the twist that it has to be from my local library. 1975 :-)
76, unless you’ve read all of these, should be easy: Interview with the Vampire, The Boys From Brazil, The Sins of the Father by Lawrence Block, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues, The Great Santini by Pat Conroy, The Survivor by James Herbert
I have actually read most of those - not Even Cowgirls or Santini though
I was going to suggest that you might want to consider “Kindred” for your 1976 book and then you mentioned it for your 1979 pick and I was like he’s got the wrong year. Alas I was confused though, the story took place in ‘76 during the parts that happened in the present so that is why I was thinking she wrote it in that year. In any event I would definitely recommend it.
That's good to know - thanks!
Thats a great idea challenge. I’ve already selected my book for 1958 “The Cat in the Hat comes Back” I reckon I may have read it before.
No just joking I have got a selection of 10 books published in 1958 though, so will chose one of these depending on availability. Thnks for the idea.
Glad you liked the idea! Enjoy your books
Shogun is one I’ve wanted to read for ages but I have big book fear. Would be really interested on hearing your thoughts on it when you get round to reading it
I have the audiobook of Shogun, and it's over 50 hours! Sidney Sheldon books are always a fun read. This seems like a fun challenge, not sure I'll be able to participate.
67 books for me... no, 68, because I'd never finish before my birthday! Nice idea, but there's no way I could do it.
I read all of Sidney Sheldon when I was way too young (I was fascinated by revenge stories) and I recently revisited The Other Side of Midnight. It's 100% ridiculous and over the top, but relentlessly entertaining. I do hope you give him a try at some point, because I would love to know what you think.
Ridiculous and over the top is definitely my jam!
The Thorn Birds is really just a glorified Mills & Boon, Olly. And its central story is kind of trashy. You'll love it!
That sounds PERFECT
I´m such a slow reader, so this would probably take me a long time, but maybe I´ll try it. I love the idea, and being forced to pick what sounds appealing from a certain restraint sounds helpful. But again, I´d have to plan it, and maybe read it out of order so I can make it... we will see. :)
Good luck if you do decide to do it!
@@CriminOllyBlog Thank you! Maybe next year! :)
The first few Xanth books are fun; unfortunately he's still churning them out
For fun I started today with Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny from 1967. Let’s see how long I will keep up with this challenge.
I’m glad you can’t repeat authors or Stephen King would dominate my list.
Mine too!
Hmm. This isn’t new, i did this about 5 years ago. It was a lot of fun!! It’s very enjoyable to kind of see how society changed over time and it is reflected in the books as you read through the years.
I'm really looking forward to the experience
The 2nd half of Shogun is meandering, I predict another dnf 🤭 1 book a month for this project - so this will take you 5 years? 🤭 I think you should read a sports book or a war book during this adventure.
I'm sure I can fit a war book or two in, sports maybe not
What an interesting challenge. I was born in 1964. It might take a few years.😂
🖤💚
I’ve tried, really tried, but Shogun is soooooooo slow
Bloodline is really good
That's good to know - cheers!
