I do not understand this state. Why is the government, both city and state, penalizing the businesses for legally creating a drug addict's utopia that caused this effect? This is just expediting and amplifying the damages that the legislatures are doing to our ecosystem and economy.
Maybe the Seattle government should be the ones finding and returning the carts to the stores where they were stolen from. The blame isn’t on the stores…and they shouldn’t have to pay fines…..the blame is on the people who run that city and allow crime and criminals to run rampant and also allow homeless people to get away with whatever they want too. That city government should be out working to collect all those carts and return them to the stores by their own hands. Hold those accountable who are accountable…..none of the stores are guilty of anything.

It's $400 for a new cart. That's a huge expense you would figure that they would protect their investment a bit better. . . The resources they use to round up these carts and hold them or crush them doesn't come from nowhere it's not free the labor is charged and if the city is doing it it's just coming out of your tax money taxes that could be spent elsewhere so either pay the $25 to get your cart back which is a bargain compared to how much a new one costs or let it go to crush and pay for that . I tried to contact a store once to pickup one of their carts on my street and was unable to. The stores could easily create a program to make reporting stray carts easier so they can send people out to pick them up. This way the city would not feel the need to get involved.

Roughly 10 years ago, it was a crime to stop someone from stealing your carts. Businesses need to move away from the insanity before you are sued into oblivion.
Some stores have a system that’s like an electric dog collar for carts! There is an invisible barrier surrounding the edge of the parking lot & if a cart goes up to that line the wheels lock on the cart 🛒 the only problem I noticed with that is that some of the stores don’t know how to unlock the wheels once it’s been activated so they’re parking lot ends up looking like this junk yard! Or they could just pay someone $25 an hour to make sure their carts don’t leave the property
I watched a woman drive an electric cart out of a store up and over the hill. I called the service desk and informed th and last I seen the woman was still cruising down the road. I would think an electric cart is quite expensive. You would think they might have made an effort to recover it.
That's crazy. You're going to make the store owner pay for a stolen cart 🛒, or hold it hostage, or even WORST make them pay a fine. This literally sounds like racketeering.
This is one of the reasons I hate liberal states and cities. They are punishing the stores for the actions of thieves. They are forcing stores to "buy back" their stolen shopping carts for $25 each, and if they don't, they get charged double for the city to get rid of them. Keep in mind that these costs get passed onto the consumer. I have a much better idea. How about a $5,000 fine for anyone caught with a store's shopping cart off the store's premises? If they can't pay the fine, then they have to do community service and work for the store they stole from by retrieving carts in the store's parking lot. And if they don't show up, sent them straight to jail.
In Ireland carts have a wheel lock on them. So if you attempt to wheel the cart out of the car park of the store the wheels lock and it is pretty much impossible to push because the wheels won’t move. Perhaps the independent store in the US could look into that however, I’m sure thieves would attempt to take the lock off if the car park wasn’t supervised for long enough.

There holding these stores property hostage! If my bike gets stolen and found it’s my property and it gets returned free of charge. They need to sue the city!
On an individual perspective that works but when you're talking about a big profitable entity expecting an individual or the city to collect their property and give it back free of charge is charge is silly they are expecting somebody to do work for you for free. I understand there are small business suffering from this. But if you are that small then you don't have a lot of carts to loose. And are more likely to keep track of your $400 investment.
@@Stig007 government isn't a business. It's a governing and enforcing body. The correct thing would be to return the property if marked clearly. If not move on to a recycling program to help prevent unnecessary trash from building up.
When they're charged for destroying abandoned carts, large companies make it a tax write off. There is absolutely zero penalty for the companies who can afford to actually do something about the problem, andthe cost is passed down to small and independent businesses.
So if a store employee confronts a thief, they get arrested and fired. If the city recovers the stolen shopping cart, they’ll sell back the cart to the store (victim) and if the store refuses to buy its stolen cart back, the city fines/charges the victim for recycling that cart. The city is hustling like the mafia. This is a shake up by the city punishing law abiding businesses for actions of criminals.
How can you charge someone to get there get their property back when somebody else stole it from them so if someone breaks into my house steals my TV I'll call the cops I have to pay to get it back from the cops
Those carts cost $300.00. That's theft. The scallywags are taking advantage of the system, they're opportunist, they'll steal whatever is not nailed down. The Police have higher priorities, but some scolding wouldn't hurt much for the retailers. Just saying...
First they need to pass a law making shopping cart theft a felony, even if it's possession. I understand that it cost money to collect them. If they actually clean and sanitize them plus deliver them to the stores a small fee should be applied to recover the cost, or maybe enact a tax. Clearly anyone stealing a cart should be arrested and if they have an income like ssi or s.s. should garnish their check to pay for it. Once again liberals and their policies are rotting society to the core.
No it shouldn’t be a felony. But, theft of a shopping cart should still be jail time. 90 days in the slammer and/or up to a 1000 dollar fine will fit the crime.
So if someone steals my car, it's my fault? This is the government overreaching and coddling criminals. Sounds like we need to overthrow their asses...
If you see someone with a shopping cart rolling down the street arrest them for possession of stolen goods. Throw them in jail so they have to spend a couple days without their precious drugs. STOP protecting the worst of society. They are not protecting you.
Because arresting a homeless person gives them a home. Jail is free fresh cooked food, a nice clean dry bed with no bugs or vermin,, a roof, air conditioning or heat depending on the season, clean freshly laundered clothes, and maybe medical attention. A bathroom, indoor plumbing, a nice shower with soap, and maybe even a tv, and books to read, all of these resources without having to do any work.
What makes you think the homeless aren't law abiding citizens? I'm sure some aren't and I'm sure many are. I'm also pretty sure people who live in houses may occasionally commit crimes. Do we then ask;"Why don't they go after homeowners instead of law abiding citizens?"

This is BS. Citizens if you see a cart and can bring it back to the store do it. It's crap it's come to this but we can't allow the cities to run off good businesses and it's a cheap good deed. The stores could offer gift cards for carts brought back or something like that too. Idk just thinking of solutions until the people making these unfair ridiculous rules up get voted out of there.

Why would a tax paying local business be expected to pay a fee to recover stolen property? If it were my business I would report them stolen daily. Hopefully the the city council would figure out it is cheeper not to charge a fee then to pay an officer to respond and write up a stolen report every day.
What the hell? Stores are supposed to pay for carts stolen from them?! Or the carts are destroyed?! How wasteful! And backwards. And stupid. Come on, people. You can do better than this.
Solution: pay any person 5$ for a returned cart 🛒. Supply the local homeless with carts that are to be destroyed. Make a monster cart with full suspension and hire one homeless man to go around town retrieving all the carts. Put up MISSING signs all around town with a picture of the cart that was stolen and then when you find the person with it film them and shame them online so that everyone else knows not to fuc around. And finally the only other solution I have is to start a local Facebook page that displays all the local people that are walking home with carts and or hauling their belongings and make them local celebrities untill they get the message.
I think people can figure out that homeless people with carts have carts without putting pictures on Facebook. Does that person with a cart have a cart? I can't be sure, let me check for their picture on Facebook.
In southern CA we have guys that drive around and pick up shopping carts off the streets. They take them back to the stores and charge a small fee for each cart. And in most stores now you can't take the carts out the parking lot because the wheels lock up when you do.
Nobody gets a shopping cart to take their groceries home. People take carts for convenience. Stores do not have recovery Officers for carts. Four hundred dollars is a misdemeanor and thieves do not care. Now maybe making it a federal crime to take carts, maybe that would stop this type of theft.
Extremely stupid, how can the stores prevent this? Some stores put poles on their carts, so they can't be taken outside, but that's not practical when it comes to groceries and other household needs
This is also a problem here in Northern New York State. Solving the problem would be putting a device on each cart that would not let the cart go past a certain point a censor type of device that would sense the property line and the cart would lock up the wheels
I have allways thought about this with stolen cars. I would rather have full coverage pay for it than some GPS theft recovery service bring a stolen car back to me.
In Chicago, where I grew up, stores have iron fences around the entrances, you can bring the cart that far to put groceries in the car, and that's as far as the cart goes.
Best thing about my neighborhood grocery store isn't just that it's a discount grocery. But that they allow the locals to use the carts to get their groceries home. Then you just leave the cart where they can see it & they send out a truck to collect them. They always seem to have enough carts still at the store.
Considering carts can be (as stated) $400......or even $500, $25 is a fair price to reclaim. Otherwise the business needs to send an employee into the local area to pick up stray carts. I've done that in the past. It didn't hurt my feelings any.
no employee will travel 3 blocks to hurl a cart for minimum wage. F these stores. they donated to BLM. thousands. walgreens donated a quarter million. but theyre too cheap to pay someone with a big truck to round carts? stores deserve it
I did that in 82, I took a cart home in winter because I couldn't afford a cab, I took the cart home, emptied it, and then took it back to the store. A man would go around the neighbourhood on Sundays and pick up carts and take them back to the store. Seemed to work. They tried the locking wheels thing at one time.
Many European markets use an automated cart deposit system that almost eliminates the stolen shopping cart problem. Inserting a one euro coin releases a cart for use. When the cart is returned and locked into the system, a one euro coin is returned to the shopper. Works like a dream.
Love the idea of giving unmarked carts to the homeless instead of destroying them. Also I have seen a lot of housed people using carts to walk their groceries home. Maybe there is a way to rent one to make that possible. That would probably help with the carts being returned

Are the police actually gonna respond if the store calls and report somebody stealing a cart? Or are the stores supposed to physically take it away from the person, possibly injuring them and facing a lawsuit?!
I feel like the government, whether it’s city, state, county or federal defend the criminal and not the tax payers.

I own a trucking company and a few times each year, I deliver brand new shopping carts to supermarkets. These are considered "high value" loads because each new cart costs so much. To destroy these carts after they've been stolen is ridiculous and an insult to the grocery stores as well as the people who build them. 🙄
And adding more unnecessary items to our landfills!
Not helping climate change any what a waste and a scam

I always appreciate a sturdy piece of equipment, but F these stores tbh. they pay their cart pushers 8/hr and expect them to work outside in the summer 10 hours a day. my coworker was always exhausted. so glad i refused to fill in when he got sick. they should pay for exploiting his mexican ass
That is the dumbest thing because if people are stealing them it is not the stores fault. So Seattle decides to punish the stores for criminals actions.
Would you let people steal from you?.
How can you destroy someone else's property that was stolen from them
I do not understand this state.

It's illegal for me to recycle a cart without showing proof I didn't steal it.
Yet it's okay for the city to impound a stolen cart and then recycle the stolen cart.
Wow.
This is such a stunning example of government stepping in and making a problem so much worse.
That's Washington state for you, it's stolen property and the state makes a profit not only from taxes that are paid but financial gain from policing stores for more money with fines. Just a thought, what if someone took a cart from that "cart jail"?
Would that be called a jailbreak? And now that the person has said cart, is that person harboring a fugitive and be sent to prison? Slippery slope council members.
What about the carts rights ???

I'm sorry but asking the city or a personal individual to do work for a retail entity for free is stupid. It takes time fuel and other resources to round up these carts.

Small businesses will suffer a little bit but again replacing a cart that is gone is more expensive than just paying $25 to get it .

I tried to contact a store once to pickup one of their carts on my street and was unable to. The stores could easily create a program to make reporting stray carts easier so they can send people out to pick them up. This way the city would not feel the need to get involved.
You completely missed the point. Enforce the laws already on the books. Vote these progressive clowns out of office.
It is a good solution to deal with the current situation.
@@chrisredfield4017 I'm not sure what the point was to miss but my boss did the same thing we have a lot of carts come to our business property from stores all over he called the stores they had no interest in coming to pick up the carts. But we are left to deal with them and that takes time and time is money so somebody should have to pay for that we don't do work for free. We are a family own business and all the baskets come from big retailers. . And the recycling centers won't accept it if the retailer's name is on the basket so I had to hack up the baskets which took time.
Roughly 10 years ago, it was a crime to stop someone from stealing your carts.
Businesses need to move away from the insanity before you are sued into oblivion.
So, then wouldn’t the city be guilty of receiving stolen goods? The DA should then prosecute the city.
Exactly and I thought every big store chain definitely had that lol. Costco has one and it works great
Destroy them ? Give them back ! I mean it's easier than destroying them.
Then the retailers can PAY THE CITY the back labor for picking up the carts and storing them!!!
Perhaps the independent store in the US could look into that however, I’m sure thieves would attempt to take the lock off if the car park wasn’t supervised for long enough.
we have that already. people arent weak dude theyll just slide the cart
Charge Seattle with posession of stolen property. This is illegal. File a civil RICO lawsuit. They can't charge victims.

This gives me an idea, find stolen cars and have people bail it or punish them for it being destroyed if they don’t bail it out
Why not simply return the carts?
When they're charged for destroying abandoned carts, large companies make it a tax write off. There is absolutely zero penalty for the companies who can afford to actually do something about the problem, andthe cost is passed down to small and independent businesses.

Why should stores pay for their own carts? Seattle is nuts.
Bubbles wld be losing his mind
Sounds like stores should stop providing carts and force people to buy less food.

Hold people accountable.
How can you charge someone to get there get their property back when somebody else stole it from them so if someone breaks into my house steals my TV I'll call the cops I have to pay to get it back from the cops
The cities do it to everyone ever have your car stolen? well it goes too impound..when the police recover it and you the victim get raped by the city!
I like that they are blaming homeless people and then charging the stores.... Maybe they should focus on fixing homeless problems
How many Police Officers drive past cart thieves (who in all fairness would say they found it) a hundred times per day?
So it's the cops fault ? Elected officials make policy, not cops.
Those carts cost $300.00. That's theft. The scallywags are taking advantage of the system, they're opportunist, they'll steal whatever is not nailed down. The Police have higher priorities, but some scolding wouldn't hurt much for the retailers. Just saying...
Bubbles would be more than happy to take these carts. Some of you will understand this, some won't.
If the store property is take off the physical location its not the stores liability anymore
The city police should return the stolen carts to their owners. If the city does not return the carts they should reimburse the stores.
So if someone steals my car, it's my fault? This is the government overreaching and coddling criminals. Sounds like we need to overthrow their asses...
Outrageous!
They should pass a law to jail the homeless for using and stealing the carts
If you see someone with a shopping cart rolling down the street arrest them for possession of stolen goods. Throw them in jail so they have to spend a couple days without their precious drugs. STOP protecting the worst of society. They are not protecting you.
Yes!
Why don't they just call and tell them to pick them up wherever they are? It's stolen property. They shouldn't have to pay to get their property back.
Disgusting... instead of going after the homeless .. the city is too scared so they go after the law abiding citizens

Idk just thinking of solutions until the people making these unfair ridiculous rules up get voted out of there.
its not really the citizens problems. im not gonna sweat for a rich company either. if they cant pay a measly 25 bucks then F em. cheap store only wants to pay people 9/hr then F em
How does it make sense to punish the people who were the victims?!??

it sucks. im not a leftist but these companies can afford it. 20 bucks to regain a $400 piece? done deal. if kroger doesnt like it they should pay for a security guard
Why would a tax paying local business be expected to pay a fee to recover stolen property? If it were my business I would report them stolen daily. Hopefully the the city council would figure out it is cheeper not to charge a fee then to pay an officer to respond and write up a stolen report every day.
I wouldn't be surprised if the city council has instructed the police not to respond to those calls.
What the hell? Stores are supposed to pay for carts stolen from them?! Or the carts are destroyed?! How wasteful! And backwards. And stupid. Come on, people. You can do better than this.
lmao Government can't fix Potholes.
I can't be sure, let me check for their picture on Facebook.
state sponsored extortion
Yeeessss!
My neighbor's car was stolen. The thief abandoned it, and it was towed. She had to pay the towing fee and storage fee to retrieve her car.
The city is going to screw every business owner. Enforce the law. Even on homeless junkies.
In southern CA we have guys that drive around and pick up shopping carts off the streets. They take them back to the stores and charge a small fee for each cart. And in most stores now you can't take the carts out the parking lot because the wheels lock up when you do.
Wow where do the towns get the right to punish thrift victims! Grow up!!!!
That's complete BS💩 Then food prices will go up even more. There is absolutely nothing right in this world anymore. 25$ per card is ridiculous!
I wonder how many ALDI carts are in jail 🤔 does a .25 cent charge really prevent carts from being taken off their property? I always wondered that
Nobody gets a shopping cart to take their groceries home. People take carts for convenience. Stores do not have recovery Officers for carts. Four hundred dollars is a misdemeanor and thieves do not care. Now maybe making it a federal crime to take carts, maybe that would stop this type of theft.
That's just the city looking for ways to rip every one off.
Charging a business for stolen carts is extortion on a expanded level great job guys 🤯
Just like your car got stolen then towed to car jail and you have to pay to bail your car out.
Why would they want Carts with all the drug residue and crap on them from them ppl?
I have allways thought about this with stolen cars. I would rather have full coverage pay for it than some GPS theft recovery service bring a stolen car back to me.
In Chicago, where I grew up, stores have iron fences around the entrances, you can bring the cart that far to put groceries in the car, and that's as far as the cart goes.
What’s stopping the city from delivering the carts to back to The stores they belong to
Same thing as getting your car impounded, anything to make a double tax.
F these stores. they donated to BLM. thousands. walgreens donated a quarter million. but theyre too cheap to pay someone with a big truck to round carts? stores deserve it
Imagine that, being charged for the recovery of your Stolen Items!?
...and who pays for the fines, the consumers.
Great example of how some laws just didn’t work as expected and need to be repealed. Punish the people STEALING!!
That would make sense to do that or the worst take it back to the store next time you shop.
Knowingly selling stolen property is a crime too. Even if you're the rulers.
Many European markets use an automated cart deposit system that almost eliminates the stolen shopping cart problem. Inserting a one euro coin releases a cart for use. When the cart is returned and locked into the system, a one euro coin is returned to the shopper. Works like a dream.
What happened to the carts that stopped rolling after a certain point
Love the idea of giving unmarked carts to the homeless instead of destroying them. Also I have seen a lot of housed people using carts to walk their groceries home. Maybe there is a way to rent one to make that possible. That would probably help with the carts being returned
In Phoenix they sell new Carts for 120-150. Used ones for 50 each. To have a grocery business pick them up it cost 7-800 a week.
