Just had my water pump die on my 2012 f 150 ecoboost. Used this video to replace my water pump. Best video on how to do the job correctly. The heads up on the cross over pipe was extremely helpful. Just an amazing and helpful video. God bless you for posting this video!
Completed this job on my 2015 F150 EB last night. Upset that it failed at 92k miles and only 5 years, but its really not that bad of a job. Took about 4-4.5 hours including a test drive and I did everything by hand and took my time. I did not have to remove the air intake pipe that feeds the left (passenger side) turbo. Might save someone 10-15 minutes. I also took a garden pump (with a clean hose) and pumped out the coolent behind the water pump cavity after taking the thermostat housing off and probably got an extra gallon of coolant out. The pipe that connects to the rear of the engine under the intake also came out on me, but with new o-rings and some o-ring lube it went back in no problems on reassembly.
Just replaced the water pump on my ‘15 expedition because this video gave me confidence to do it. Ordered all the parts in the description for $168 off rock auto then had to go back and order more motorcraft orange coolant. The expedition radiator drain is on the passenger side hidden pretty well and filling it back up only took 2 gallons. Overall it took me 3.5hrs to complete for the first time at home. I also bought the Husky power ratchet at home depot for $80. Worked perfectly and it’s half the price of the bigger name brands.
My '15 expedition just started leaking coolant collecting at the front of the oil pan. I'm guessing its the pump. Thanks for the heads up on the drain.
Excellent video, did it to my 2013 f150 last weekend Couple tips, I put some rags around hood latch and duct taped so that when leaning over the rad didn’t get constantly jabbed, took out thermostat when still mounted on engine but didn’t install it until putting back together as it was easier to install housing, if you gently rock the housing you can get it separated from the crossover pipe without it coming off from the back of the engine.
Saved $900 in repair labor. Took me about 4 hours. I would say I am a 6/10 in terms of automotive repair experience. Done brakes, rear shocks, power running board replacement, basic stuff…. This was by far my most in depth repair but I was able to get through it. Couple items to note… 1) be careful unplugging the charge pipe sensor near where it plugs i to the throttle body. I cracked mine and had to spend $200 to replace the whole thing. 2) I did not have to remove the passenger side turbo pipe. It has enough play you can just lightly bungy it out of the way. 3) BE EXTRA CAREFUL WHEN SCREWING IN THE REPLACEMENT WATER PUMP. Do not over tighten them. The 7 bolts that hold it in place can’t be overtightened or they will snap. I broke one and spent a while feathering out the broken bolt.
One tip if you tackle this on your own. When you get the new water pump in and everything back together. Make sure you burp your coolant system. This is not shown in the video but is important step. I learned this the hard way. Lucky I didn’t ruin my engine. Enjoyed the video though and it gave me the confidence to do the repair myself.
In my experince coolant damages belts causing squeals. Remove the tensioner belt and wrap the strech belt in plastec before removing any part that will leak coolant. Best video covering this procedure I have found!
Thank for this video! Just completed the water pump replacement on my 2015 Expedition. I do all my own maintenance but haven't tackled a job like this since I was a kid, helping my dad do some shade-tree mechanic work. Your video gave me the confidence to take it on. Thanks again!!
My 2012 f150 EcoB 3.5 Had a knocking rattle, no warning lights, no performance issues, dealer found it to be the water pump, $600+ to replace. I’ve replaced water pumps on side by sides and an old Chevy and take car to clean each part removed, replace belts, rings, anything touched really. I didn’t think to ask about replacing the belt, rings and such today, they are completing it tomorrow, Hope the dealer is as conscientious as you. PS it is 1/4/2022, ford water pumps are on back order till July, so installing an aftermarket pump that does not include a labor warranty, makes me worry I’ll have to take a day to do this next time. If it took u 3.5 hours, that’s 8 for me! Very nice video
Did my 2015 non-Ecoboost 3.5. Video really helped. I let the air out o my front tires and that was the game changer in terms of reach and overall comfort and accessibility.
Great video. Finally information laden and instructive with specific details. Not interested in hearing ones self talk. Just distribute knowledge and how to, to successfully complete the task. Thank you very much.
Just replaced my water pump on a 2012. Great video…thank you so much! Literally had the iPad in the engine compartment to watch and do step by step. Thanks again!
I'm still nervous about tackling the thermostat replacement on my 2014 F-150, but I can't say it's because of your video. You did a really nice job with both the video and narration. I'm impressed with your thoroughness. Thanks!!
thanks for the kind words! if you are only replacing the thermostat, you can just remove the intake pipe from the air filter. then reach around the charge pipe and remove the two bolts holding the thermo housing on. you wont need to remove the radiator hose from the thermo housing. i did this just last week on a 15
Great video. Just did the water pump replacement on a 2016 F150 EB with 65k miles. Steps were exactly the same as the 2015 you did. Breaking loose the air ducts took some time as it is hard to get any leverage. Putting everything back together was easier than I thought. The pipe from the left turbo to the intercooler was the worst. The tip on reaching behind the manifold to guide the pipe was great. I just had to push it down some and it slide right in. Took about 5 hours. Bought the water pump from Rockauto. Total cost including coolant and gaskets was about $180. Stealership wanted over $800 P&L.
Yeah sucks. Another YTer Flying Wrenches is a Ford mechanic and he said most leak at the weep hole and he was right. Haven't had an issue since I replaced it 5k miles ago
I have a 2017 F-150 with a 3.5l v6 naturally aspirated and when the time comes when I need to replace my water pump I'm going to use this video as a guide. Thanks for your time and great video. Please stay safe and healthy.
@@stephanmendoza86 Ill look at mine tomorrow but 2017 was at least 2nd gen 3.5 . They redesigned so gas cleaned the back of the valves instead of just dumping gas straight into the cylinder
Thank you for the thorough write-up. I have a 2012 and the reservoir is in a different spot, but everything else is nearly identical. What the video doesn't show is that you can hook a drain line to the red coolant drain fitting on the radiator so that coolant doesn't dump everywhere (it will still dump everywhere from the block when the water pump is removed though). I was able to get the thermostat housing off without the crossover pipe coming out by using a flathead screwdriver to hold a tab of the crossover pipe in place while wiggling the thermostat housing off. Another tip - you might as well clean the throttle body as well, since you already have it removed. As silly as it sounds, the hardest part for me was getting the thermostat hoses off and then back on. Those spring clamps will drive a normal guy insane, especially when they're a decade+ old and there isn't much tool clearance.
This is a great RUclips video! I just paid my bill for having this service done and was wondering what they did. After watching the video I absolutely needed someone else with experience to do the service. Very detailed and easy to understand.......but I could never have done this on my own. Thanks for the auto lesson.
Just saved me $400+ in labor. If you're ever in the Fayetteville area beverage of your choice is on me. The best auto repair video I've seen on the net, hands down!
Great video! Just did my water pump and thermostat on my 2013 ecoboost. Almost identical to this procedure. I noticed that the clamp on the passenger intake pipe was blocked slightly by the frame. I ended up not removing the pipe and just kind of "moved" it and used a bungee cord to keep it pulled away. Unfortunately i forgot to pull the hose on the vacuum and broke the vacuum stem. So now i gotta fix that lol. Thank you again 🙏
Thanks for a wonderful video. Note: Some have 3 bolt pulleys, some have 4 bolt pulleys. It appears he installed a 3 bolt pump and bought a new 3 bolt pulley. (He removed 4 bolts from the original pulley). Completed a replacement after reviewing your video several times. Two glitches..... 1. getting all the parts on a Sunday. 2. Left the intake hose to the throttle body loose which three a low turbo boost code. I tried not to panic as I popped the hood, but saw the hose was off.
Im a big guy...6foot 4 inches 210 pounds..My 1979 ford f250 4x4. I could take the rad out and litterally stand inside my truck facing the engine...now with my 2016 ford I can barely fit my hand down in there...lol...GREAT VID Thank You
I just found out about this pump placement. My pump is fine..currently.. but was considering selling the truck. Thanks to videos like this I have the confidence to do the job myself, should the time come. Really well done informative video. A jack of all trades.
Fantastic breakdown...felt confident I could do this so I spent last Sat replacing the water pump. All was good with the repair (besides using the wrong screw and ruining the part...glad it was $94 dollars).
Thanks for the video! Couple of thoughts for people doing this job. Just accomplished it today. 2012. A few differences. I avoided taken off some of the ductwork for turbos and instead just worked around them. Definitely recommend watching part 4 of Fordtechmakuloco's timing job videos. He has to take off and put on the water pump of course for the job and in part 4 he provides torque specs and torque sequence. I recommend following those guidelines when torquing bolts that have seals and contain liquid. It's not complicated... But there is a right way to bolt both the water pump and the thermostat housing back on. Thanks again. You helped me out immensely.
Great video! Just did my 2012 water pump. I put a shop vac to pull out the old coolant so it didn’t make too much of a mess. Hardest part was the turbo ducting!
After moving a hose clamp away, I next use channel-locks where the clamp was compressed to lightly grab that area and rotate it back and forth until the hose moves. That makes pulling the hose off so much easier.
To this day your video is still accomplishing its goal at helping others. Great job! 👏 just got done replacing water pump, and thermostat in my 2018 F150 V6 3.5 eco boost and it was a little different but your video helped so much! Thank you!
Thanks, only one slight difference on my 2011 with the location of the degas tank, but otherwise identical and VERY helpful. I appreciate the video (100% recommended for anyone tackling this)! I don't even want to think what the dealership would have wanted to charge! I know that I am doing it for under $100 plus my labor (lets call it 6 hours @ $50/Hr - it's not but I am including the time it took to watch the video and drink some beer). Puts some real money in the pocket and buys better beer!
Great demo on this job, I got it disassembled in 3 hours, back together and running in 2. That includes dinner and kids distractions. 2013 3.5; slightly different configuration, but close enough to get it done Thanks
Thanks for the video! I'm doing research on a 3.5 EB truck and heard the water pump was a known issue. Looks like it's no problem to change out. Thanks! 👍
Thank you for posting this video. Appreciate the details you provided, right down to the proper torque specifications. My truck is a 2013 so there were some very MINOR differences, but this guide got me through it without a problem.
Thank you for the awesome video! Helped me do my water pump on 2013 f150. Getting through all the turbo/air piping was probably the hardest part. I also probably fished for the hole the black pipe fits in for a good 15 minutes lol.
Awesome tutorial. I wish that I had known about applying the lubricant on the hoses before I had done a previous job. I torqued the water pump bolts to "German specs" (Gutentite/good and tight). Your suggestion to feel for the intermediate pipe was an awesome suggestion.
Just amazing great video great great explanation and thank you for the details on where and which parts we needed Aaron please more F150 you are truly great at what you do
I just found out they did that from Scotty Kilmer RUclips’s channel. I thought, man I fucked my self buying an F150 3.5 ecoboost. This video just calmed my ass.
@@410ytlmustang Same here, was working on a deal to have it changed out before 60k warranty ran out if internal,,, Ill look at mine tomorrow to make sure, I have a 17 should be 2nd gen 3.5 BTW I love my 3.5. A 6 cylinder that out runs many 8s, The 2017 had more ass than the V8 for a year, 2018 the V8 pulled ahead
you think this is bad? The lateral mount version of this engine has a timing-chain driven water pump. This is only mildly more difficult than replacing the pump on a GM 3800 series. The lateral mount 3.5L you have to pretty much drop the drive train out of the vehicle.
Man what a bad a** well explained and detailed video you just made my life and many others a 100 x's easier your the man for damn sure thank you for helping so many of us. Very impressive.
Awesome video brother. U got the whole thing in here and with your video I was able to change water pump, thermostat and “rod seals” just for $300. Dealer quoted me $700 just for water pump. So $400 in my pocket 😁 Subscribing to your channel 👌 Thank you
Great Video Aaron!! Out of necessity, not by choice, I just changed my 2014 F150 in a little over 4 hours using your video as a guide. I was quoted between $1200-1500 here in the Sacramento area by various shops. On top of that, all the shops are backed up several weeks (the real detractor). On the 2014 I was able to get away with zip tying some of the tubes and hose back out of my way. BTW my truck has 239K miles. Replaced my belts while I was that far in.
Great video really helped. But Don't use the g05 coolant I learned the hard way on my 3.5 ecoboost that it does NOT mix with the orange ford coolant and doesn't meet the specs of the new engines. Ate the seals out of my new water pump and leaked again. Also a ton of sediment in my cooling system causing a ton of issues. Use Motorcraft orange (discontinued) or yellow (not gold).
Great Job! Only thing I would suggest is to put the oil cap on when pulling parts, because one day it will either get a nut, bolt or dirt go down the hole...
At 11:13 where the fluid is coming out of the block, there is a black gasket that you can see. Unless there is a leak in this gasket, whatever you do, don't touch it, there is no need to replace that gasket The O-Ring seals but this gasket you have to remove the timing cover to take it out and replace it.
Your video just saved me 390 in labor from Ford. HOWEVER if you got a 2012 f150 like me Your antifreeze drain is on the passenger side. Took me about 2 beers to figure it out lol
Great video. Maybe I can do this after all. The only thing I would add is cleaning the throttle body while I have it off. Thank you for the instruction
2018 3.5 Dealership said my water pump bearing were shooting out grease and needs to replace pump. With the impeller being inside the pump, would bearing grease release externally? No noise from pump. Oil residue on passenger side wheel well. Great video. Dealership wants 2k +. I’m not mechanically included but will give it a try. Thank you very much!
My local shop is charging me $500 total for this job and after watching this I feel like I'm getting a good deal. I know the dealer wants double that and then some.
If it’s a Taurus, Explorer, Edge, or Flex, it would be 6x more because it’s internal and it’s $3000-$5000 and it’s a 14 hour job according to Car Wizard.
I wish people would understand that only the engines put in the Taurus and Flex had internal water pumps. Seems to be a big thing people hate about these engines which is not an issue in the trucks.
Sitting on the side of the highway waitibg for my brother and his tow truck as we speak thanks to my water pump.... looks like I'll be tackling this tomorrow.
Aaron Hines thank you very much. I would have been so lost without this video. Everything went good chaging my waterpump except I broke the red tab on my mass absolute airflow pressure sensor connector. Right now its zip tied and electric taped until i install new switch.
Great video! I think mine will need replacing. I noticed a puddle where I parked located where the back/middle of my engine would be. Im guesing it worked its way down to the engine shroud hole. Must have been a slow leak that created a plate size puddle while I was at work. Puddle seems to be liquid and not oil. It does not have a ditinctive smarll like motor oil or tans. Color is gold in color. I could not see any big wet spots where the water pump is located.
Hello Aaron, Thanks very much for your video. I watched it before starting the job, you're a great speaker clear and precise to the point, easy to follow.
Thanks for all your insight and information. I have to get my water pump changed and now I know what it takes. Probably need to change serpentine belt too. Thanks
Anytime you're working and you open a hose or line, immediately plug it with something, rag, plastic baggy, and don't hold bolts in your hand while removing other components or bolts, your looking to drop em somewhere. And another tip, don't use air tools to remove bolts in the heat sections, like exhaust to engine, or manifolds to engine etc.. you may just snap a bolt head off. Just saying.. .quit using plastic hand gloves... you can soak in Palmolive later. Throw away wd-40
Great Video. The only problem I’m having is disconnecting the vacuum hose from the intake. It doesn’t show you doing that in the video and I unfortunately broke the piece going into the side of the intake.
Is this the same for a 2012 F-150? The intercooler pipe removal for a Lariat is different. At 3:27 removing the lower part requires removing the clip that you see where the greenish-blue line on the right side. So far that's the only difference except now that I'm doing this NOTHING has been as easy as you show. EVERYTHING is a fight to get it off. By far this is the hardest job I've ever done on any car and that includes rebuilding an engine. That was somewhat easier than this. I appreciate everything you showed, it has helped except with the frustration.
Most complete, concise and well explained instructional video about this particular repair type on RUclips. Good job on the repair, AND on making the video. --Do you babysit too?? So hard to find good help.

To this day your video is still accomplishing its goal at helping others. Great job! 👏 just got done replacing water pump, and thermostat in my 2018 F150 V6 3.5 eco boost and it was a little different but your video helped so much! Thank you!
I have the same truck and was wondering what the differences were from the video to our trucks?
Thanks, only one slight difference on my 2011 with the location of the degas tank, but otherwise identical and VERY helpful. I appreciate the video (100% recommended for anyone tackling this)! I don't even want to think what the dealership would have wanted to charge! I know that I am doing it for under $100 plus my labor (lets call it 6 hours @ $50/Hr - it's not but I am including the time it took to watch the video and drink some beer). Puts some real money in the pocket and buys better beer!
Dealer labor is more likely $125-$145 per hour. More beer for you🍺🍺
@@1wadesdad with inflation, it will probably be $200/hr next week.
Great demo on this job, I got it disassembled in 3 hours, back together and running in 2. That includes dinner and kids distractions.
2013 3.5; slightly different configuration, but close enough to get it done
Thanks
You couldn't have explained it any better. I value your time. Much love brother..👍👍
Thanks for the support!
Thanks for the video! I'm doing research on a 3.5 EB truck and heard the water pump was a known issue. Looks like it's no problem to change out. Thanks! 👍
Great video, gonna tackle my water pump & thermostat this weekend. What grease did you use?
Thank you for posting this video. Appreciate the details you provided, right down to the proper torque specifications. My truck is a 2013 so there were some very MINOR differences, but this guide got me through it without a problem.
Thank you for the awesome video! Helped me do my water pump on 2013 f150. Getting through all the turbo/air piping was probably the hardest part. I also probably fished for the hole the black pipe fits in for a good 15 minutes lol.
How long total did the job take?
Convinced me to take it to the dealer. Great video.
Awesome tutorial. I wish that I had known about applying the lubricant on the hoses before I had done a previous job. I torqued the water pump bolts to "German specs" (Gutentite/good and tight). Your suggestion to feel for the intermediate pipe was an awesome suggestion.
My repairs at the dealer were $3900, I wish I was in better health to do it myself this was good information.
Great video! Detailed instructions, complemented by, step by step video. Thank you!
Clear and Concise Excellent Video Aaron!
Just amazing great video great great explanation and thank you for the details on where and which parts we needed Aaron please more F150 you are truly great at what you do
Thank you for your support!
Fantastic video,. Straight to the point with all of the important details. Donations are much deserved
Thank u!
just hopped over here from a 3.5 NA Engine in a Taurus, I'm glad to see the EcoBoost 3.5l water pump is not driven of the timing chain... lol
What a screwed up design by Ford on that! Ludicrous!
I just found out they did that from Scotty Kilmer RUclips’s channel.
I thought, man I fucked my self buying an F150 3.5 ecoboost.
This video just calmed my ass.
@@410ytlmustang Same here, was working on a deal to have it changed out before 60k warranty ran out if internal,,, Ill look at mine tomorrow to make sure, I have a 17 should be 2nd gen 3.5
BTW I love my 3.5. A 6 cylinder that out runs many 8s, The 2017 had more ass than the V8 for a year, 2018 the V8 pulled ahead
Unfortunately the Taurus is internal. It doesn’t matter if it’s a EcoBoost or not, you have to remove the timing cover.
For the taurus , just pull the engine out
“We didn’t have any links thank God”…. I know the feeling. Lol
After all that to find a leak would be disheartening.
Good video thanks
What happened to the good old days when you didn't disassembly half the engine just to change a water pump or thermostat.
My 1977 Granada 3 speed cost $5000.000 CDN plus tax
you think this is bad? The lateral mount version of this engine has a timing-chain driven water pump. This is only mildly more difficult than replacing the pump on a GM 3800 series. The lateral mount 3.5L you have to pretty much drop the drive train out of the vehicle.
Anything that is turbocharged is always a PITA to work on!
When you had half the mpg with half the horsepower? No thanks.
It’s time consuming, but not that bad.
I'm watching this video today for reference, same job on my 2012 FX2. Hopefully I alreadt bought all the Orings before start the job. Nice video!
I appreciate people like you.
I just replaced the water pump on my ‘16 Expedition and your video really helped. Thanks!!
Man what a bad a** well explained and detailed video you just made my life and many others a 100 x's easier your the man for damn sure thank you for helping so many of us. Very impressive.
This guy is a beast! Awesome video man!
Awesome video brother. U got the whole thing in here and with your video I was able to change water pump, thermostat and “rod seals” just for $300. Dealer quoted me $700 just for water pump. So $400 in my pocket 😁
Subscribing to your channel 👌
Thank you
Fantastic video, best on RUclips as of 2023
Can’t even lie I really appreciate this, thanks for helping out
Glad it helped! Thanks for watchinng
That estimate is twice as much as in mid missouri, 2022. I know we are in the country here with probably lower labor cost.
@@mikemallery913 My water pump just went out on my 2010 Lincoln MKS with 50,000 miles. The dealership quoted me $2,600. I'm in a rural area too!😥😥
Definitely donate! I plan on it after I fix mine in my 2011. About to do it soon.
Great video really helped.
But
Don't use the g05 coolant I learned the hard way on my 3.5 ecoboost that it does NOT mix with the orange ford coolant and doesn't meet the specs of the new engines. Ate the seals out of my new water pump and leaked again. Also a ton of sediment in my cooling system causing a ton of issues. Use Motorcraft orange (discontinued) or yellow (not gold).
Thank you for this information video. I just finished the water pump on my 2016 Expedition 3.5
Great video. Helped immensely. Much appreciated!
That's way easier than the Ford Explorer or Ford Flex Waterpump! Nice job!
Excellent video. I wish I had your skill and talent.
If you got more than 120k miles just replace the throttle body with Ford OEM... If it fails your not driving anywhere.
Your video made my life so much easier. Thank you very much!
Thank you for your video this is the best one thanks to you I fix my water pump
Awesome video explained everything very well. Thank you.
Great video! Thoughts on replacing the hoses while doing the pump?
Hello Aaron,
Thanks very much for your video. I watched it before starting the job, you're a great speaker clear and precise to the point, easy to follow.
This video just helped me saved a lot of money. Thank you. Great video…
Thanks Sr. Your video help me to replace my water pump on my 2015 ford expedition 3.5L. My only concern is if the grease doesn't affect the O ring.
After next year, change out the water
Thank you so much for your video, I was able to do it myself on my 2016 expedition.
Thanks for all your insight and information. I have to get my water pump changed and now I know what it takes. Probably need to change serpentine belt too. Thanks
Great video and narration. Thanks a lot
Does this same procedure apply to the 2013 3.5l f150 eco boost?
Great Video. The only problem I’m having is disconnecting the vacuum hose from the intake. It doesn’t show you doing that in the video and I unfortunately broke the piece going into the side of the intake.
Awesome sauce. I really appreciate you sharing.
Thank you for your video! It is super detailed and right to the point. You are awesome!
Very helpful! 👌 Thank you 🙏
Is this the same for a 2012 F-150? The intercooler pipe removal for a Lariat is different. At 3:27 removing the lower part requires removing the clip that you see where the greenish-blue line on the right side. So far that's the only difference except now that I'm doing this NOTHING has been as easy as you show. EVERYTHING is a fight to get it off. By far this is the hardest job I've ever done on any car and that includes rebuilding an engine. That was somewhat easier than this. I appreciate everything you showed, it has helped except with the frustration.
totally helped this 53 year old mechanic,, i struggled with that coolant tube, f..... ford....
Thank you for the video I did a 2018 today it was a bit different but your video is on point
Most complete, concise and well explained instructional video about this particular repair type on RUclips.
Good job on the repair, AND on making the video.
--Do you babysit too??
So hard to find good help.
Wow what a Great video 👍🏻
Thanks a lot dude 👍🏻
