The most hypocritical thing in the West foreign policy is that the US and EU are best friends with Saudi and UAE, which actually are totalitarian monarchies. This is because Saudi sells their oil to the West, and UAE buy American weapons. Also lots of Arab sheikhs keep their investments in EU economies. That's why Europe and the US don't care democracy in those countries...

From what I know of history, Afghanistan was a secular socialist country with close ties to Russia during the Cold War. Women didn’t wear Hijabs, went to university etc. It was the US and UK that funded and armed extreme Muslim groups to overthrow the socialist government.
These extreme Muslims groups became the Taliban, Al Queda etc.
I still find this pretty unbelievable.

    • @margaretcaine4219
      @margaretcaine4219 Месяц назад +5

You are correct. Furthermore, the USSR didn't invade Afghanistan. The government begged for help and the Russians only very reluctantly agreed. This is what prompted the US to involve themselves, by arming the Northern Alliance, which morphed into the Taliban.

"If the US kept only a thousand troops there".... what an absolute load of rubbish.
The Taliban were growing in power and waging a massive insurgency.
20 years of war, counter-insurgency and attempted nation building by the world's most powerful nations hadn't stamped them out.
The only reason the Taliban weren't attacking US troops in the final few years was because they were in negotiations with the US about an american withdrawal from the country.
So they agreed to not kill American troops while the negotiations were underway.
If, as Piers Morgan suggests the US had decided to stay longer, that would mean the Taliban would have resumed attacking them.
Which would mean the US would be stuck in a losing war, propping up a corrupt and hapless government and getting countless thousands more afghans killed.
A few thousand troops likely wouldn't have been enough to keep the corrupt afghan government in power.
So there would have once again been demands from the foreign policy hawks to "surge" the country with troops to stop the collapse.
And if the US DIDNT do another surge, then the "few thousand troops" in the country might not be enough to keep the Taliban at bay.
So when the collapse came it likely would have been even more chaotic, with the US having made no previous withdrawal plans and American troops stuck in the country, captured by the Taliban or fleeing with their tails between their legs.
Long story short, if 20 years didn't achieve the goals, 22 or 23 years wasn't going to either. Sometimes you have to cut your losses.

I am completely against the War in Afghanistan. I actually fought there in 2006. The fact is that the Taliban hadn't killed a US soldier in 18 months. The ANA were still getting hammered but Piers is correct that the Taliban can be kept at bay with around 1,500 men and air support. What he is completely wrong about the difference it would make to the human rights situation there. Our allies were just as bad and less disciplined than the Taliban. Not their own constituents, nor the rest of the country have been helped by Republican legislation. Please, show a little more respect for the people of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, Uruguay and all the other countries in America by NOT using the name of our CONTINENT to refer to USA, which is only ONE of the MANY countries in America. Study a little History and you will see that "America" is NOT the name of one single country but that of a huge continent. Maybe once U.S.A. finally ceases to be the world´s main superpower, people might go back to using the word "America" in its original and true meaning. Christopher Columbus came to America for the first time in October 1492 and he later sailed back over here on three more occasions. On NONE of those FOUR trips did Columbus ever set foot on what is now US territory. Let me reiterate this: Columbus discovered America, came back to America three more times and never ever was in what is now USA. Then, Europeans gave this new CONTINENT a name: "America". Now..., what does this tell you about the real meaning of the name "America"? Did Columbus "discover America" without ever setting foot in America or is America the name of a huge and diverse continent, of which U.S.A. is only ONE of its many countries? Consider this: if France decided to call itself "United Provinces of Europe", would you then call France "Europe"? How do you think the people in the rest of Europe would react?

    • @twittertwice

this is a particularly stupid remark, I’m going to assume it is either far right or far left point of view. What you find is most Americans know nothing about how their government works although they have plenty of opinions on why it doesn’t work. As long as Americans, do not go to the polls and vote for the party that has the best history of service to this country, they will have problems. You don’t have to like Democrats all you have to do is get historical on the quality and types of legislation that have come out of Congress the last 50 years . Most of that legislation that has helped this nation in anyway enhance the quality of life of the people who live in it. We’re written by Democrats Republicans know this and have maintained their constituency by lying, and because most of their constituents are racist, they accept the stories , and kudos to them vote consistently for Republicans, even though those Republicans show no history of ever helping their poor constituents. The problem currently for the Republicans was shown by the Pew Research institute, several years ago, but for the first time in the history of the United States, fewer white people were being born, then were dying. Republican party is losing its face through old age and death. I would not be surprised if it’s embrace of anti-reproductive rights has to do with the fact that 60% of the abortions in this country meaning America, are sought by white women.

If you think realism is more moral like Saagar, I have a bridge to sell you. Realism isnt moralistic. Realism doesn't involve morality. Realism involves looking at the state of international relations as it is. Technically, Kissinger was a "realist" of some kind, so I wouldn't say he was some beacon of morality. Also what the hell do the protests have to do with international relations. you can be a realist and have moral stances on issues . @@ralphballon1539 that’s the point I am making…. Realism isn’t moralistic and categorically cannot be. It’s Saagar who makes that claim multiple times and had an interview with another guy who voiced that belief (I tried to find it and couldn’t). My main issue isn’t that Saagar is a self-styled Realist. My issue is that he hides behind moralism when he wants to and totally disregards it when it doesn’t fit his personal preferences. If he just came out and said “I don’t care about Ukrainians, Russians, Israelis or Palestinians dying. These are all conflict theaters that I think America is hurt by being involved in”, I wouldn’t care. My issue is he acts like he cares about these people and that if we really practiced his vision of realism, all these conflicts would go away and people would stop dying. Saagar is just as much a cynical lib as Hilary Clinton, Condolezza Rice and everyone else he purports to disagree with. The reality is he just wasn’t accepted into their circle. In practice, he shares their ideology, but views different targets as the “enemy”. Also, what do you mean “what the hell do protests have to do with international relations”? How do foreign policy change come about if there is no catalyst for such a significant u-turn? Things aren’t gonna change away from what the MIC wants unless there is a reason to. Protests and civil disobedience is how you get that.

@@GlutenEruption More like instant regret, you could see her cognitive dissonance in real time. She wasn't prepared for that question, otherwise she held most of her points, just kinda fell apart there

John is insane. Russia winning in Ukraine is NOT inconsequential to the US. It increases the chance of nuclear war which clearly is bad for everyone including the dumb United States. Jesus wept.

The 1960s and 1970s were considered Kabul’s Golden Era. The city was modernizing (read: westernizing) and women had many freedoms. The city was even considered a popular tourist destination.
As an American I only knew about Piers from watching BGT.
