In summary, all the interview focused on: India: Is India on the table with US and China and Russia? Mearsheimer: No, you are not on the table, you are standing aside.
I mean what else did you expect? The interview took place in India, with China as an aggressive neighbor. The main purpose of the interview was to explore India's position in all of this from Mearsheimer's perspective and to gain insight into conflicts in various parts of the world simultaneously. Also, your interpretation of Mearsheimer's comments about India is inaccurate. He explicitly stated that India should and would not fully engage itself, considering its economic inferiority compared to China, also based on its current and past foreign policy decisions. He also made it clear that India's rise if it happens means India is on the menu from both China's and US's end.

By which he meant that if the US abandoned their ally Thieu, it would be a disaster because countries wouldn't trust the US as a friend anymore. Today, of course, we know it is indeed as dangerous to be a friend of the US as its enemy (watch Germany f.eg.). Sadly, the US have a long standing tradition of turning their back to their 'friends' whenever it's in their interest.
Professor John Mearsheimer staring at the Indian crowd dead-on with Palk(!) in the corner of his eyes: _"there are THREE great powers - United States, China and Russia!"_ The truth hurts and I can see the pain all over the room.
That’s not entirely true. Chinese PLA did fight in the Korean and Vietnam wars. In both wars, the USA did not win and eventually withdrew their military.
During the Vietnam War, China did not allow the U.S. military to cross the 17th Parallel in Vietnam, otherwise it would join the war. The United States listened, and was then dragged down by Vietnam. Many people in the United States know this.

Few years ago, a Princeton, Northwestern university study showed, for the last 20+ years, US policy disproportionately favor the corporate donor class, not average voters.... What is the point of voting when the outcome don't even serve the voters?(by design) For example, Japan, people can vote, but can it changes their national policy and say no to the US ? The answer is no because Japan is being militarily occupied by the US. Their voting system is a clown show, same to S. Korea, Taiwan, and the entire Europe. For Indian's elections, with the amount of corruption, does that really mean anything? Most of the population is not even educated enough to vote. How many Indians have some basic knowledge of the complicated geopolitics? Most of the elections on the planet are just rhetoric, political show. It's either the candidates already pre-selected for you to "vote" or all of the choices so bad you ended up not voting at all. In order for the election system to be effective, you need to have informed voters, but with the amount of mis-infomation produced by the mass media between each election cycles, do you think the voter really can vote for his own interest? the answer is obvious. There are so many problems in the current election systems that no country has the prerequisite to run it properly. And to think China decision making body does not consult others is ridiculous. You think XiJin Ping just running the show all by himself not consulting other party members and experts? CPC members have it's own voting system. I'm an overseas Chinese born and educated in Kolkata, India, and has been living in Taiwan for over 30 years. First, John is a guest, probably paid, so he was very diplomatic in trying very hard not to hurt the host or Indian's pride/feelings with the bare truth! If you're smart, you'll clearly see between the lines in many of his answers! John is an American, so, he's not going to trash the US and all it's failings and wrong decisions the past 30~40 years, that's caused it's downfall today! Check history, even with far superior Navy and Air forces, US was badly beaten by the Chinese Army, weaken by internal fighting, and lost the Korean war - thus North and South Korea! Same with the Vietnam war and how the US troops ran via helicopter from their VN Embassy! We see a repeat on VN in the recent Afghanistan war, and I don't see a good outcome in Iraq or Syria! So, basically the US cannot fight any war, but fights only those countries that can't defend themselves! Even with all the advance weaponry, NATO, basically the US, is losing the Ukraine war against Russia, so there's NO WAY, US will EVER DARE to confront China! Haven't you noticed US has moved their first line of defense - Korea, Japan, even Guam back, and as far as Australia! As for Taiwan, China don't need to use one bullet or kill one person, just block off TW from the North and South for a month or so, and TW will be on it's knees with no gas, coal, etc. Can you imagine no more electricity, internet, etc.!?!? Sharma, you can't even control the Bay of Bengal, India suddenly controls the Malacca Strait! What a joke! India, look around you, and yourself! This is jingoistic take. If you are abreast with the current situation in India, you will see how rapidly the infra is improving. To say that China will keep rising from strength to strength is a superstitious and a fanciful dream. Nobody knows the future and China itself has internal problems that it does not let out into the world.

As a Chinese, I carefully watched this interview twice. Milzhammer is wise and humorous. He preserved most of the dignity and confidence of the Indian female journalist and the audience present. Undoubtedly, India is rapidly developing. India will become a better India. I hope Indians who see this message can realize: India does not need to compare with China, nor is there any comparability. China has gone through about 200 years of brutal social turmoil, conflict, and integration process, from a top agricultural civilization to a relatively advanced industrial civilization (but still far from the top, there is still quite a long way to go). The cost of this process was the accidental deaths of tens of millions of people, including my grandfather. When India has not experienced these and is unwilling to pay a huge price to unify cognition and improve execution, India cannot become the second China. Overall, India will become a better India, and China will become a better China, but there is no comparability between the two. Indians who disagree with the above views, you do not need to argue with me. You can come to China and see it with your own eyes instead of listening to your media propaganda.
A truly great power does not ask others, "Am I considered a great power?" and They do not ask if you are at war with another country. "What can I do for you?" For example, China, from its leaders to its academics, has always emphasized that it is a developing country and that its most important task is to improve the living standards of its people. However, let us not forget that this country, in its second year of existence, boldly took the initiative to attack the seventeen-nation coalition led by the most powerful nation on earth and achieved its political goals.
Dr. Mearsheimer has been very accurate in his analyses and predictions going back at least two decades and it was good to see him in India being interviewed by Palki Sharma.

By admitting China in WTO, America raised China trade status to same level as the other 150 members, nothing else, there was no privilege. US only removed all trade restrictions which other countries were not subjected. The US government never forced any Western company to invest in China. Palki should ask Mearschimer that Q: Why the Western companies preferred China to India.
How India dealt with its constant trade deficits in past decades? Answer: 1. Remittances from Indian laborers in West Asia. 2. Legal robbery of foreign companies through the Indian Courts. Wistron and Xiaomi are the two latest victims.
23:42 Palki: "The funny thing is China calls itself a democracy with Chinese characteristics" I've never heard them say that. Doesn't she mean 'socialism with Chinese characteristics'?

India and China needs to resolve the border disputes amicably, it would allow both countries to coexist and prosper. Both countries being part of BRICS and having conflicts can fracture the organization which some countries are desperately waiting for getting dissolved. The answer is clear, check what the US did to UK, EU, and Japan, who are all considered "democacy“. This is actually the core idea of this professor. In the interantional competition, there is no shit of democracy, no shit of human right, freedom, ideaology...nothing. The only concern is your realistic national interest.
I am really surprised that Indians believe in democracy. It has neither solved the corruption problem in India nor the inefficiency problem in India. Democracy is just a way of dividing your country into many interest groups, and the United States can control one or two groups. even we need some conception like democracy, the real goal of voters are benefits. if your government can protect your interest, why you should go to vote for someone. Have you observed how many countries in the world first became election democratic and then became wealthy? Western countries are rich because they have colonized the world in various ways. This Indian feels it deeply. Indians, think about how much of Britain's wealth comes from India? In Asia, South Korea, Singapore, and Chinese Taiwan all had long-term autocracies that enabled rapid economic development and then gradually realized election democracy. The biggest support democracy needs is to have benefits that can be distributed to voters. If Taiwan and South Korea do not have huge trade surpluses, benefits cannot be distributed to the people before the election. This election will definitely become more and more chaos. like US election now.
I don't understand why India leadership and press appears to be so keen to be a great power, to be on the table with US, Russian, or China. One thing I disagree with him is that this notion U.S. has a highly primed military. That is nonsense. Fighting against an economically sanctioned weak military is one thing and fighting with an equal enemy is yet another thing. Even those against weaker nations such as Iraq, US did not fight alone. It had a coalition of 28 countries pounding for one month that weak nation to defeat it. In Afghanistan bare foot Mujahadeens fought 20 years and drove away US and NATO. US is a chicken shit army that shoot missiles from far away. When it comes to ground combat it is even Steven and they will run. Vietnam was the best example. China will win such a battle hands down. That said China will never attack Taiwan because it is a nation with utmost patience. It will one day reunify peacefully. And US recognize Taiwan as part of China yet wants to fight China to protect Taiwan. Why? It is a sham. All US wants is to sell its military hardware. For that it should keep this status quo. India and China should get together and resolve these minor border problems and kick the colonial West that ruined both countries in the past. In that respect this China India thing is a West created artificial problem.
Palki tried really hard to guide John acknowledge India is a super power, one of the poles, and even more superior than China. but John fails her every time😂😂
India could join in the possible war in South China Sea? Indian army clearly knew how dangerous it would be, during the war in 1962 New Deli was in the state of emergency because Chinese army was only 200 km away.
The border issue is a seed planted by England before she Lets India go. England arbitrary drawn line on the map without regard to actual border reality. Those natives living in those contested zones are all Tibetans and not Indians. But evil England disregarded the fact.
You can literally see Palki’s heart break when John tells her India will not be a super power… She’ll never ask the question what happens if India join forces with China and Russia….
If you think about it, China and Russia don't actually need India to join their alliances. That alliance already has everything they need to be the world's strongest alliance. It would take the entire world combining into one bloc to match those 2 alone, and that's a stretch. But they would like to make peace with India, because if India joins the US side, India can cause tremendous harm to the world. China and Russia just like to do business. No war, no interference. If India wants to join, that's fine.
India doesn't Need to be a super power. It just needs to be better stronger with each passing day ..enough to prevent any other power from becoming a dominate one in its jeightbourhood. Also china will never be a superpower either..

@@jameslawrence5828 Who told you that? Democracy is more than just running an election.
In China, if you want to participate in politics, proof yourself competent first by doing well in school, then apply for a government job. You have to start from low, understand the basic needs of regular people, not like the west which politicians are billionaire family members or legacy political family members, being manipulated their way in and call it a democracy. Colonial toxin still remain in India, and it operates some what like the west, political system run by thugs that serve themself at the cost of the society. (Independent gained from begging is not true independent, true independent is only gained by violent revolution that up roots the old interest group)
Sometime watching these political talk shows from India and the west really entertaining as they always like to mention China China China, but clueless of how it works.
@@jameslawrence5828The fundamental reason why China cannot become a developed country is that its population is too large. Even if China realizes industrial modernization, it may not become a developed country, but fortunately, China's population has begun to decline, and industrialization and urbanization are the best family planning.
if you search the name John Mearsheimer on youtube, you'll find that 11 years ago, he was talking about China would not rise peacefully, now 11 years later, China did rise and did not go to war with anybody, his thoery of great power politics is only based on everybody bahave like the US have done, China had been one of the greatest country in Asia, had sailed as far as Africa, have its people moved to most South East Asian countries, but China did not colonize the world like the Europeans did, culture matters.
The problem is not that China Rise will be peaceful or not. China is very patient. It will take some time and China is OK with that.
The real problem is the decline of US. Will US give a fight. Will it's decline be peaceful or not.

China as well as Japan, Vietnam, Philippines and others are totally allowed to settle their disputed area via negotiations or via violence, however it's more and more clear that the US want to use its proxy Marcos Jr(Even US media like WSJ say Marcos Jr was installed by US govt and his family is extramely corrupted and was once wanted by the US govt) to provoke China like they use Zelensky to provoke Russia, PH is lucky that China is not Russia, because the military level of PH is far weaker than Ukraine(even weaker than Taiwan), and China is far more rich and powerful than Russia. PH have to sank a ship for 20, 30 years to show it's a disputed area, China don't need that.

You have conflicts with all your neighbors, a huge un-educated population, very bad infrastructure, serious inner conflicts, and the list goes on and on ....
STOP feeling jealous of China's growth and advancement! Learn from China! And finally, remove the pipe dream of trying to contain China with the US! CHINA WILL CONTINUE IT'S PATH AND WILL GROW STRONGER, NO MATTER WHAT!
This is jingoistic take. If you are abreast with the current situation in India, you will see how rapidly the infra is improving. To say that China will keep rising from strength to strength is a superstitious and a fanciful dream. Nobody knows the future and China itself has internal problems that it does not let out into the world.
Thanks for the reality check , Now look at your own backyard ,your country is going to have a huge population crisis ,its just the start wait for at least 1 decade & you will get to know.
Secondly, talking about India's poor education & infrastructure TIME CHANGES ,remember china was once the poorest country in Asia ,millions of poor people ,uneducated ,ill infrastructure & many more problems. So get your ass hell outta India's matter.
Getting hella jealous of India's rapid growth. Man get a life ,stop getting insulted by anyone's success.
On the one hand, there are tons of "China experts" in the west that keep revealing the problems faced by China and predicting how China's decline is inevitable.
On the other hand, China is such a secretive state that it "has internal problems that it does not let out into the world".
Good luck making your own thoughts coherent.@@prakhardangwal7367

For example, China, from its leaders to its academics, has always emphasized that it is a developing country and that its most important task is to improve the living standards of its people.
However, let us not forget that this country, in its second year of existence, boldly took the initiative to attack the seventeen-nation coalition led by the most powerful nation on earth and achieved its political goals.

Thanks you for inviting John.
I agree with you about China and India, who should settle down the arguments and help each other. But in reality it won’t happen, sad fact.
Palki tried really hard to guide John acknowledge India is a super power, one of the poles, and even more superior than China. but John fails her every time😂😂
absolutely,,, What about India, ? What About India,,,? same ol mantra again and again,, but getting same direct answer from John,.. lol
Excellent. One may agree or disagree but he made a good and fortgright point.
He and Jeffrey sachs make a great duo
Wow Dr. Mearsheimer is in India .. wished I was there at the event
It says live from Washington DC
India could join in the possible war in South China Sea? Indian army clearly knew how dangerous it would be, during the war in 1962 New Deli was in the state of emergency because Chinese army was only 200 km away.
Also Jaipur 😂
India and China should be together instead of being pitted against each other by a third party.
The border issue is a seed planted by England before she Lets India go.
England arbitrary drawn line on the map without regard to actual border reality.
Those natives living in those contested zones are all Tibetans and not Indians. But evil England disregarded the fact.
You can literally see Palki’s heart break when John tells her India will not be a super power…
She’ll never ask the question what happens if India join forces with China and Russia….
😂😂😂 she learn quick!!
