How does one shade like him? My shading either gets to smudged or if hi apply straight strokes, you can see the lines. Which pencil and technique is recommended?

I use a Bic MatiC grip mechanical pencil that you can buy at Target or Walmart. You can use a blank piece of paper as you shade to prevent smudging. It's important to control the pressure you apply to your pencil for smooth shading. It just takes practice. I have a shading video if you want more tips, check it out here:
