Calulated cost for Lomi (before purchasing one) for 3 years, total came to $1,940 that includes extented warrenty for 2 years and cost for charcole and pads. Since it came out in 2021, we still do not know how long this machine will last, cost of repair or who locally will repair it. Some comanies have you mail back their product, then you have to pay for shipping. My recommendation is to wait long enough (5 yrs) and read reviews to determine its worth. Until then i will use the blender idea. In regards to the smell, so long as you don't put meat into any compost it won't smell.
The pods are activated charcoal. Made from burning trees. They only prevent the smell. The 500w device runs for 4-24 hours per cycle. This is a food waste dehydrator. As soon as the dehydrated food product gets wet it rots and molds because finally the composting process has begun. The product that comes out of the machine has no nutrients for plants until it composts.
Just found this dumpster fire of a product randomly through watching RUclips video. Agree with you and to further the point, potentially it will be mishandled by the the person trying to use the dirt. It will potentially stunt plant growth and worse still produce methane. I'm no eco warrior but believe achieving corporate responsibility is an optimists delusion, when you have companies peddling this kind of crap to ill informed consumers.
A tip I learned from a blog is that you run the eco mode 2-3 different times, adding material each time, and then run a grow mode (with more new material) before emptying, and it works so much better. I mix the result in a big unused planter with soil before applying to my plants.
Yes! I saw a similar tip on Lomi’s website😃 haven’t tried it yet since we want to avoid running 16+ hours of grow mode😂😂 But thanks for the feedback, we might give it a try in the future.
@@BearCusine I think you could probably get away with not running grow mode at all, but I do think it's important to run several cycles of eco mode before emptying the bucket. I couldn't tell you why because I'm not that knowledgeable, but the results seem way better.
@swampydooo my sister lives in a place where they don’t have curb side organics collection. I was very surprised when she said she just throws food waste in the garbage. For someone like this, the impact is likely less than what she does now. I agree it is not a perfect solution, production will impact the environment, and depending on how you get energy, that can also impact the environment. However so does everything else. Even just your comment on this RUclips video tells me that you use devices to go online. Those devices are harmful for the environment and I recommend you avoid using them if you want to make sure nothing you do harms the environment.
@swampydooo are you kidding! Using a blender and wasting all that electrical power? My sister does get her electrical power from solar you know. Blenders can harm the environment and you should be ashamed for recommending their use.
@swampydooo because my sarcasm seems to be lost on you… my whole point is that things are not black and white. There is subtlety to any conversation that needs to be addressed. Yes some things are harmful for the environment, almost everything is. Yes there are better solutions, almost everything has a better solution. No the conversation can’t and shouldn’t stop there. It is much better to look at things in context rather than make blanket statements like “this is bad for the environment”. Statements like that ignore things like “this is less harmful for the environment than what was previously happening”. I don’t think a product like this is good for everyone, especially not someone who has the time and is willing to blend their compost or someone who can put it in a weekly food waste disposal bin, however I accept the fact that this might be a potential solution for people who live like sardines on the 46th floor of an apartment building. It uses less plastic to manufacture and less power to run than a dishwasher. I doubt you are commenting on every video review of a dishwasher complaining how bad they are for the environment. I mean who knows, you might even own one yourself. I think we should think critically when a company makes a product targeted at being eco friendly. That means coming to the conversation with facts and then looking at a spectrum of potential owners to see where, if anywhere, a product fits in to society. Besides, if we just chalk thing up to “it’s good for the environment” or “it’s bad for the environment” then we would live in a world without our favourite homemade cocktails and smoothies.
Hello, first to say, thank you a lot about this review on Lomi’s final product. Im a cook worked in kitchens last 2 years, and I saw that high percentage of employees in this business are not so aware about this subject, so this is pushed me to composting world. I bought a Lomi composter last 4 days and now im waiting for it. And I was thinking about the nutrients difference with normal compost and the compost with your way. Do you know any nutrient stats of your soil mix with Lomi’s product. Please contact me about this subject, im in Turkey and here has no much information on this. Have a nice day !!
That's our concern as well. Therefore we only run it for 2 hours (as explained in the video), instead of running the entire cycle. The electricity consumption is similar to running a washing machine.
Absolutely not going to buy one. I take my food waste and compost them in worm bins in my basement. I use leaves in the bins and also in the bucket I keep under kitchen sink. This keeps the smell away and provides a natural environment for my red wigglers
Don't waste your money. My Lomi is less than 2 years old. They won't offer any type of assistance as they said it's out of warranty and nothing they could do. I would be willing to by a replacement part (heating element stopped working), but after several hours hours of being on hold, sending videos, speaking to customer service they were of no help so basically wasted $500 on the product. Will definitely tell my friends, co-workers, etc. to steer clear of any products by Pela as overall experience has been incredibly frustrating and disappointing. Wish I could compost the device itself as it's a piece of crap and the company doesn't back it's product as their only suggestion/solution to the issue was to buy a new one!
Bruh, why didn't you just leave the food waste in the lomi until you had enough to run it as opposed to keeping food waste bagged in your fridge🤔 But great video appreciate the review definitely saved a good chunk of change
Just want it to be less smelly. Usually it took me at least a week to collect enough food waste to run the machine. Imagine keeping all of the food scraps in a closed container at room temperature for a week🤨… that’s why I chose to keep them in the fridge.
Very disappointed with this product. Worked fine for about 3-4 cycles, then every batch since then has been a mushy blob of useless soil that has to be thrown away. Hard to get a live person with customer service and live chat person not not much. Worst part is not able to return it so I'm stuck with a $500 piece of junk. Buyer beware!
To be more clear, all I said in the video is the “dirt” part is not compost, and that should not be used on the plant directly. This is what you get when follow the instructions, plus a lot electricity consumption
bruh. its just a heater. dehydrator. there is no 'compost' at the end of the drying cycle. sunshine and dirt, rotated regularly would do the same without using so much electricity - for those that have access to 'soil'.
@@someone4029 everyone has different needs. Chilled. Personally I tried all method of compost and they don’t work for me because it’s complexity. Lomi is way simpler to me and doable. Yes I had a worm bin but they died on me lol. I’m sure nature is the best composter but it is too complex or labour intensive for someone like me.
Excellent review. Good fast paced delivery and video. Loved the detail on the Lomi dirt and how you make it into real compost!

I thought long and hard about this device but decided on a high end old fashion composter.
Which composter did you end up getting? Just curious😃

if you would just use an old bleder to blend your scraps. then mix it with soil and wait. you will have ready to use soil even quickrr

Any updates?…really curious about the peas and any new developments.
Yes, we updated a photo of the peas on our blog bearcusine.com/lomi-composter-honest-review
It dehydrates food and then shreds it into mulch. Once you put that in the soil it still has to be broken down before it becomes compost.
It's basically a $50 bread maker. All it does it remove warter. Rip-off comes to mind.

Cool! Thanks for the tips!
Considering getting one of these because my apartment doesnt have a composting program, so my garbage will start to stink quite quickly.

Anything for chicken bones?
I never tried to add chicken bones in it, not sure if it is too hard for the machine. But I added shrimp shells a lot and they broke down very fast!
