      I mostly agree w/you about this movie, but not completely: On the 1 hand, I too would've liked to have seen more Godzilla; On the other hand, I didn't think the environmental message was too heavy-handed until near the end when Masako was guilting Takuya & Marutomo was going crazy (& even then, it was more justified/built up to then the over-the-top/out-of-nowhere fight btwn the 2 greedy businessmen in Mothra vs. Godzilla); Also, I'm surprised you complained about an over reliance of beam attacks given how physical the fights were (E.g. Godzilla ragdolling Battra; Battra crushing Godzilla w/both a building & a ferris wheel; Godzilla ripping Battra's throat out, causing him to bleed out).

    Battra's concept is incredibly cool. He's sort of like an anti-villian, if that makes sense. Sure, he's destroying humanity ruthlessly and violently, but that's only after they hurt the Earth with their pollution. He is visibly smart and creative, using not only his lasers but also the terrain to injure Godzilla (as can be seen when he drops a building on him and then proceeds to ram him with a ferris wheel). He's also open to reason, as can be seen when he teams up with Mothra in order to take down the bigger threat posed by Godzilla. He is NOT the villain, he's just an extremely misunderstood protector of the Earth who always stands by his creator.

    This movie is beautiful in many aspects and, though the environmental message was a little in-your-face, I appreciate how that was implemented into the film as well. My mother always told me that monster movies don't need morals, but I say that the good ones includes those as well. Godzilla provided me with a basic ethical education as a child that continues to support me even today, and it is priceless. My opinion: Toho's best Kaiju films in terms of Environmental issues are: Godzilla (1954), Godzilla Vs. Hedorah, Shin Godzilla and Rebirth of Mothra ..... Instead, I find this 1992 film unbearable, and above all I was disappointed with how the ecological issue was handled, I expected more (something similar to Dark Waters with Mark Ruffalo so to speak, but done really well, or even as Ferngully) obviously they are my opinions

    I really love the 'beam spamming' era of the Heisei era. It just adds a very vivid, colorful palette to everything that keeps it very engaging on an aesthetic level.
    Colorful lasers and beams are fun to look at.
    Narrative wise, Heisei jumped the shark with time travel. Magical fairies is another bridge, pushing even farther away from the somewhat more plausible sci-fi roots of Biollante.
    Once time travel and magic fairies are introduced....the franchise doesn't really record the 84/Biollante tone until Destoroyah...which is an all time classic.

      What bother me about it is a lot of the Heisei suits seem really stiif, and the beam wars seem like a way to compensate. Though honestly, a part of it is that I prefer the fights being more physical, as it makes the affairs more visceral. Breath attacks are cool, but too much loses its punch for me, and makes it cheap.
      Except for Ghidorah. He would be cheap and do that constantly.

  • @KumoriGurasu

    I find this to be a haunting film, oddly enough, probably because of the ending. You just watch Mothra fly out into space by herself and even though she defeated Godzilla, she didn't do it alone. But here, she's on her own to go stop a meteorite that's going to destroy her home at the end of the century, and it's a life-or-death mission and she doesn't look back. The characters can only hope and pray she succeeds while they try to make the best of their lives in what they assume is the little time they have left.
    I dunno, maybe I just watched it so many times that the ending scene and score always stuck with me, but even while knowing she _does_ succeed, it's still really sad to see her go. That's the most heroic Mothra's ever been in this franchise imo, and I think that's what saves the film for me. Still is a very fun movie in spite of its preachy green message, but it crescendos to a beautiful, bittersweet ending.

    In Godzilla Vs. Mothra, he's thinner, his dorsal plates are rearranged and his neck is more ribbed. His head is flatter, his muzzle is smaller, and he has golden eyes. He battles against Mothra and Battra, and once again is plunged into the ocean and locked in by Mothra's magical powers.

    I always found it very interesting that you can essentially skip the previous film, Godzilla vs Ghidorah, and go straight from Biollante to this film without any issues.
    In fact....the 90s Heisei films....while forming a single, full continuity, also seem to form an interesting alternating continuity.
    Marathon A - 84, Biollante, vs King Ghidorah, vs MechaGodzilla, vs Destoroyah.....you can follow that sequence and not miss anything essential
    Timeline B - 84, Biollante, vs Mothra, vs SpaceGodzilla, vs Destoroyah....the only hiccup here is that you kinda just have to accept Little Godzilla being introduced out of nowhere in SpaceGodzilla.
    But seriously....vs MechaG references King Ghidorah, but not Mothra. vs SpaceGodzilla references Biollante and Mothra, but not King Ghidorah or MechaGodzilla.....Destoroyah doesn't reference Mothra or SpaceGodzilla(Outside of having Junior, but Junior was introduced in MechaG) but does have the Super X 3, which is a reference to Biollante.

      I think mecha g doesn't refer mothra in it is because mothra didnt have anything to do with Godzilla at that point. Same with ghidorah not having anything to do with spacegodzilla. Ghidorah was needed to help build mechagodzilla as you probably remember and mothra played a role in spacegodzilla being born thanks to Godzilla's cell being attached to her.

    Nice overview! I'm going through the Heisei era of Godzilla films for the first time, and so far this has actually been my favourite. Whilst Godzilla does feel like a bit of a third wheel, there seems to be more going on with the plot and characters. Their actions actually have consequences and interact well with how the monsters respond rather than them doing the repetitive 'destroy everything thats in my way' routine. I also thought the divorced couple made for the best human story of these movies in quite a while. The score is great, the fantasy elements well integrated and a lot of the special effects are pretty decent for what they're trying to emulate. Miles better than the time travel nonsense of Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah. There is also more tension and a sense that somethings actually at stake compared to the last couple.

    • @BaileyZKerr
      @BaileyZKerr 5 лет назад

      I really agree! I'm the same, going through the heisei films for the first time and I think this one is my favourite so far. I actually thought that it has the LEAST agregious beam spam of any of the films so far 'cos they're just used more creatively used I feel!
      When Mothra first hatches she uses the boat thingy as cover, Godzilla does actually grab both of them a couple of times and even whacks around larval Battra 'unda da sea' and, while REALLY held back by the effects, Mothra and Battra spent a while face to face in the air fighting melee.
      In the final fight Battra blasts a skyscraper in order to make it fall on Goji, and then later on decides to chuck the ferris wheel at him! Mothra's beam reflecting ability looks really cool and is quite creative and different and finally the twist of Mothra and Battra ending up working together adds a LOT! And it's cool to then see Battra firing his beams into Mothra's reflective field.
      Compared to Vs Biollante where Godzilla ONLY fires beams at Biollante EVEN while in her mouth! Or to Vs Ghidorah where the final fight with Mecha-Ghidorah is just the 2 standing firing beams at each other I find it hard to fault Vs Mothra for beams of all things! Especially because I was really expecting it as you can't and shouldn't exactly have it be a straight up brawl with 2 smaller, more maneuverable flying kaiju.
      (Also I just want to be clear that Biollante is my favourite villain easily in spite of the, in my opinion, poor fight scenes with her and that in Vs Ghidorah the first fight with Ghidorah does have a decent amount of physicality)

    I love Mothra and one of my biggest fascinations with the character is each Director's depiction of how Mothra fights Godzilla. In all honesty, Mothra has no real way to fight Godzilla and should go down upon arrival. I've always felt that this was the only film where Mothra had a chance against Godzilla because of her beam abilities but more specifically her ion storm when she showers Godzilla with her dust/scales and creates an electrical or beam storm shocking the hell out of Godzilla. In other versions, her dust is toxic/poisonous but it never really seemed to have a solid effect on him and blowing gusts of wind is just a parlor trick to something as MASSIVE as G.
    I am really curious as to how they depict Mothra's fighting prowess in the upcoming film, I haven't seen any glimpse of what she/he can do, I hope it's original and not a windstorm like Rodan is doing.

    To counter your argument of Godzilla having little place in the grand scheme of the film, I’d like to show you how Taoism might play a subtle role in the film's themes. Now, the Yin-Yang duality of Mothra and Battra is pretty easy to point out (despite the colors being swapped), with Mothra being the soft and feminine Yin and Battra being the harsh and masculine Yang.
    Now, while you’re probably thinking about the classic Yin-Yang symbol (Black and white droplets curling towards each other in a circle), I’d like to point out that some older diagrams of Yin and Yang contain a small circle in the center of it, representing the one thing that defines the ultimate in Taoist philosophy: _Wuji._
    In Taoism, _Wuji_ is the primordial Emptiness that existed before creation, and is seen as the Supreme Ultimate that is no longer fully attainable in our universe. The main reason for its unattainability is due to human nature constantly being at odds with the natural flow of Yin and Yang.
    Even outside of Taoism, refusal to change on a large scale can lead to stagnation and decay, where things not moving and changing with the times eventually lead to their own destruction. Now, what creature could possibly represent the idea of stagnation leading to destruction? Only one: Godzilla.
    Think about it, it was the world’s refusal to learn their lesson from the attack in 1954 that they should cease nuclear testing that led to the Cold War continuing for another 30 years, culminating in Godzilla’s return in 1984, more powerful than before. Also, it is humanity’s constant war with Godzilla that allows him to become consistently more powerful over the course of the Heisei timeline.
    At the same time, Godzilla further represents the _Wuji_ by his place in the timeline: Despite Mothra and Battra both being the gods of an ancient human civilization, Godzilla started life as a dinosaur whose family line existed before either deity would be recognized by any civilizations whatsoever. It was his forced exposure to human nuclear weapons that mutated him into the horrific beast we know today. Thus, Godzilla almost acts as a dark reflection of _Wuji,_ now representing everything wrong with the universe following his birth as a kaijū.
    Ultimately, it is humanity’s stubborn refusal to do anything about the dangerous radioactive leftovers of nuclear power plants that consistently draws Godzilla back to his old stomping grounds to continue eating from a table that’s never cleared. However, at the same time, the fact that it took the combined forces of Mothra _and_ Battra to take down Godzilla, rather than one or the other being able to do it on their own, is a perfect analogy for the _Taiji,_ the perfected flow of Yin and Yang, ultimately overcoming all forces in the universe, and restoring existence to the closest it will ever be to the original _Wuji._

    Godzilla really felt like he was... kinda there. While he was still presented as the bigger threat, he felt out of place, since the movie was primarily about Mothra and Battra. And speaking of Battra, I love the concept of an evil twin for Mothra and I hope these two will one day battle in their own movie without Godzilla.

    Well, for me personally, this is a clear step up from the first three Heisei films. This is where the Heisei era started to be how i love it the most. I love beam fights, and this is by far my favorite Mothra design. I love how fluffy she is. I always disliked the more political first three Heisei films, and i don't watch films for plots, i watch them for the atmosphere. That's why the last 4 Heisei films are my favorite films ever. Also, i strongly disliked that the final battle in GvKG was at day time, this always made movies feel unfinished for me. I love how this one has an atmospheric night time battle. It's definitely my favorite Mothra movie, and one of my favorite movies ever cause it's lighthearted, atmospheric magic. Love it. My 4th favorite in the franchise.

  • @BaileyZKerr

    (Also I just want to be clear that Biollante is my favourite villain easily in spite of the, in my opinion, poor fight scenes with her and that in Vs Ghidorah the first fight with Ghidorah does have a decent amount of physicality).
    I do agree to a certain extent that Godzilla feels like a bit of a third wheel though, although I think it's made up for by how much more expressive he seems like when he gets up at one point in the final fight and roars and stops the music as if saying "shut up!" or something and how he reacts to Mothra biting his tail (4:41) or Mothra's beam reflection or even how he waves his limbs about struggling at one point at the end when he's getting carried away. Also how comparitively brutal for the heise films so far it is when he bites Battra's neck and causes him to bleed and then starts blasting him the face with atomic blasts.
    I think he could have done with destroying a few more films earlier in the film or the things he does destroy being more disturbingly shown in order to set up that he's still going to be the main villain in the end because, I don't know if it was just me, but I expected him to team up with Mothra to fight Battra rather than the other way around because Battra had been set up more as the enemy at that point. But eh, it made the twist more surprising.
    I also see your point about the environmental message being more heavy-handed but it just didn't bother me at all. I think it maybe just felt right for me for the film.

That instead of Godzilla it was supposed to be Bagan, the final boss in the SNES Super Godzilla game? And Bagan actually came from a concept idea for Return of Godzilla? Yeah... Poor monster got screwed out of multiple movie possibilities. I just hope Bagan actually makes it into a movie someday.

      To answer your question regarding the Mothra fairies, the originals were, as you probably know, the Peanuts (Emi and Yumi Ito), and in Godzilla Vs. Ebirah there were new twins known as the Pair Bambi (Yuko and Yoko Okada). So yes, I believe the Cosmos in this film are the third set of fairies to be featured in a Mothra film. Hope that was helpful :)

  • @warriorking4ever
    @warriorking4ever 5 лет назад +5

    Despite the money this film made, I consider it to be the lowest point of the Heisei era, the effects are weaker than the previous films and the monster action isn't as fun to watch. Granted, Godzilla's battle with larval Battra wasn't too shabby, but the final battle with the puppet moths vs Godzilla just wasn't as well executed...Also, it seems odd to me that Battra's final form is clearly smaller and weaker than his larval form, which was able to fight Godzilla to a draw earlier and was much larger. I know they wanted Mothra and Battra to team up against Godzilla in the end, but Battra's loss of strength just seems so contrived, especially when you consider all the new powers Mothra gains after she transforms in comparison to him, he loses his horn beam and only gains flight (his eye beams are supposedly more powerful now but they don't seem to do him much good against Godzilla without Mothra's assistance, and his accuracy is questionable during his "high speed chase" through the air with Mothra lol). The environmental message was definitely too preachy and heavy-handed compared to past entries, and thus this film isn't as fun to rewatch as Godzilla vs Hedorah, which is weird but enjoyable. Also, it doesn't help that the meteor that fell to earth and caused the environmental upheaval that woke up all three monsters had absolutely nothing to do with humanity, weakening the environmental message even further. I feel like this film only made so much money because it brought about the return of Mothra, no offense to Mothra fans but this wasn't that great of an outing for her.
    P.S. I feel like Battra's larval form's face would make for a good basis for a modern day update of Megalon.

    Sadly the plot is among the sloppiest in the series, criminally reducing Godzilla to a supporting player in his own movie. Having Mothra team up with Godzilla against Battra might have made more sense thematically, but that's just me. Visually however G vs QM is absolutely stunning. And Ifukube delivers one of his very finest scores. That revamped Mothra theme is so beautiful.

      It's unique...as that sound effect is very much the same kind of sound effect used for Godzilla's beam in Shin Godzilla. When he initially spits fire it is the more old school 'cccuuuuuhhh' sound, and then when it refines to the narrow purple blast it has that more 'beam like' sound effect.

    This is probably my most controvertial opinion, but this is a way better movie than the Showa Mothra vs Godzilla. yes, its environmental message is preachy and "in your face", but so was the original one, like the villain was the most generic evil greedy villain you can find in any movie. And while the final battle suffers a little from the beam spamming attack, it's realistic that Godzilla would approach a flying enemy that way and it's much better than that hide and seek game disguised as a final battle of the original one, also i love the middle battle in the ocean with Battra, we don't get many battles in water despite Godzilla living there for most of the time. That, and at least Mothra has a couple of new abilities beside "just flap your wings really fast"

  • @TheKirstencarlon

    It’s true. My wife’s favorite is Mothra haha.

  • @georgesummitt1980
    @georgesummitt1980 5 лет назад +8

    I consider this the weakest of the Hesei series. The environmental message is heavy handed (not to mention contradictive when you consider Godzilla is a part of nature and makes Mothra and Battra's attempt to destroy him hypocritical), the human characters with the exception of the wife are forgettable when they aren't unlikable, and Godzilla feels like he's only here to solidify the continuity of the era. Since the next movie opens with a recap of Godzilla vs King Ghidorah, you could go from there right over to Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2 from there and it would change nothing because the only part of it that references Godzilla vs Mothra is a blink and you'll miss it stock footage used when the commander is giving a lesson about how fast Godzilla's atomic breath is.
    As a matter of fact, why wasn't this just about Mothra and Battra? This was always intended to be sort of a backdoor pilot to the Rebirth of Mothra series so why not make it a legit pilot? You could substitute Godzilla attacking the egg (which highlights how he only shows up to stay and distract Battra so Mothra can escape and his only part in the story after that was acting as a reason for the two of the bugs to double team him which felt random to me) for Battra attacking it and you would get the same result. Battra is the best part of the movie but his origin is so lame, basically the Sobajin say that the earth created him. I will take Spacegodzilla's origins over Battra's not even trying origins.
    The line about the earth having feelings from the Shobajin and later line about getting its revenge made me facepalm. And I also remember that for the final battle with the three monsters that I was so bored I had trouble staying awake. I do appreciate the idea of giving Mothra more beams and bolts so she can for once stand a chance against the big G but there is literally a scene during the final battle where all you can see of the kaiju are the beam blasts. This was the scene I had trouble staying awake in.
    Mothra's reasons for defending the earth could have been a little better defined because we only find out that she likes humans at the end. The conflict between the two of them should have been ;Mothra sees humans as a necessary part of the earth because that is the earth's purpose despite the mistakes humans make and Battra sees them as a threat to the earth that he must destroy. It is weird where the story just sort of forgets about it.

    I kind of feel the preachy environmentalism works here when two of the lead monsters are guardian spirits of the planet. Battra can be viewed as a representation for climate change, another man-made disaster born of hubris. The finale of the film is literally nature fighting back against the result of mankind's folly. Truthfully, the environmental stuff was the best part of the actual plot, as the actual human content is the worst part of the film, since it's all derivative. Battra and Mothra literally have bigger character arcs than the humans in this film.

    Gotta say this is my least favorite film of the heisei trilogy. It just felt so different in tone in all the others and I’m almost never satisfied with fights involving only mothra and Godzilla that I’ve seen in the series as a whole aside from maybe the original Godzilla vs mothra and the fight they had in gmk. Battra in theory does seem like an interesting addition to the mythos but I was personally never fully sold on the dark counterpart, I actually find kumungas and megagurius more interesting bug kaijus if I must be honest. Of course this movie does have some memorable visuals, and the fact Godzilla has the audacity to interrupt this prophesied battle and decide to fight both parties was something I always liked. Best of all it added what might be the best kaiju of the whole series SKELETURTLE!

  • @Gojirawars03
    @Gojirawars03 5 лет назад

    Definitely the second worst of the Heisei Series. Good effects and half-decent story. Some decent characters and mediocre action scenes. However, the fight scenes are somewhat lame, and the story is very sub-par for this era of films. The characters are pretty boring overall, but I honestly kinda like that goon who works for the corporate businessman. He’s just such a goofy character. The score is great, and Battra is awesome, but everything else in the film just feels lower quality compared to the rest of the films on the series.
