How to Design and Laser Cut Magnetic Game Dials

- In this episode, I talk about making magnetic game dial prototypes for an upcoming Kickstarter, Fable's End. Stephen, one of my viewers, asked me to help prototype these game dials, using his artwork. I was impressed with his artwork and intrigued with using magnets to hold the dials together, something I haven't tried before.
Stephen is a talented artist who has done all the artwork for his game, and it is beautiful! I talk about how I converted his images into vector drawings in Illustrator, how I created larger prototypes using magnets I had on hand, and show how I embedded the magnets in the final, smaller dials which fit into the Fable's End box.
I also share my technique for working with small rare earth magnets, which can be tricky!
Stephen's Kickstarter is planned for March. I will put the launch date here, once it is finalized.
It's ridiculous to me that you don't have ten times the subscribers that you do. Always enjoy your videos!
This made me smile, Big July, thank you!!
Cool Project! I like how clearly you explain your troubleshooting steps.
Thank you, CHaTmPs! I really like to show the whole process, to show it is iterative and all about problem solving and it's nice to hear that is appreciated!
Wow great project! I'm looking forward to the Frosthaven dials!!
Thanks, Evan, I'm working on the Frosthaven dials right now!!
Those came out really well! I have had hit or miss luck with engraving pockets with a consistent depth in wood (I am probably using cheaper wood), so I have done that with opaque acrylic. I wonder how well that would work with a darker wood for the core, covered with a light wood, like Birch as a thin veneer to cut through (sort of like the two color plastics for engraving). I have seen Spectraply (all the same wood, but the layers are dyed different colors) at Rockler but they are usually 3/4" thick or more. . .
Andy, I would LOVE multicolor plywood, what a great idea! I will search for some, and please let me know if you find something thinner that I can cut on my machine. I wonder if we can make our own??
@@GreylightMay I have seen videos where people have made presses for making their own plywood. I have not tried it myself because I usually do plastics.
Andy, I found a few wood options at Johnson Plastics Plus, the people who make the Rowmark layered sheets you can engrave. I'll be testing them out, and will show them in a video soon if they have potential. I'm working on double dials for Frosthaven right now, I will try the new materials for that!
@@GreylightMay Nice! I am looking forward to seeing how they turn out.
Andy, I used these quite successfully on my Frosthaven dials! Keep and eye out over the next 2-3 weeks for my video on those, I think you'll like the results!!
Great work! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Ron, I appreciate it!!
Why didn't you spin them so we could see how they work?
Excellent question! I should have. They don't actually spin, if they did they wouldn't hold the number. They turn easily, but if the magnet is inset far enough (which it was), the wood touches and there is enough friction to hold the number in place. I definitely should have demonstrated that!
