I'll be honest, I love this type of content from you where you share some introspection as to why you're successful. It feels kind of dumb to admit but sometimes your content that pertains to your accomplishments can be depressing for me because I am not at a point in my life where I can call myself successful. Watching your content like this that shows your weaknesses and how you address them really motivates and inspires me. I hope you get what I mean, I really appreciate your content nonetheless.
I'm always extremely grateful for you sharing what you learn and so inspired by the ability you have to look for ways to come back to yourself, it helps me remind myself of doing the same. Online school has felt like a blur and it's been so hard to be connected with what I really want. Thank you for this :)
thank you for the message!! I've been struggling a lot with anxiety this semester and I'm really afraid of my grades deteriorating because I fail to study effectively. the idea of prioritizing your well-being and yourself as a person more than your performance at uni really speaks to me. I needed to hear that. I still have plenty of time and my productivity (especially in such a hard time) doesn't define me as a person :)
Self-care is conducive to performance. Very well explained, John. Finding the same thing for myself, this semester. Only wishing it hadn't taken a global pandemic to be taught this...
totally agree when you talked about the self care stuff. I dont have to follow people around trying to make things like they does. Just be yourself, discover what makes you feel better, and finally u will get the true happiness.
Online school is really so hard. I agree with all you said. The social pressure is what makes me keep going and now I don't have that anymore. I don't know if it's normal, but the only thing that made me a good student was having someone to compete with or help. I need someone good I want to surpass or someone who needs my help so I can always be one step before them. Without anyone I feel so depressed, what's the point? My motivation is zero right now.
Thank you so much.... That was a firm advice. I've been a victim of tiresome online classes and was getting kinda mentally depressed earlier this hell of a year. But now things are getting right as I am pushing forward and moving on.

Thank you for the advice, listening to you feels pretty much like talking with a close friend. Im studying CS as well and im trying to figure out all of this as well, take care of yourself. peace
I made the same experience. In the first semester I completely threw myself into studying all the time. I was very successful but I let down so many other dimensions of my life. Now, after some semesters I learned to take care of what you like and see yourself as more than the student. Taking care of more dimensions of my life brought me a much more fulfilling life. I have been taking online classes for 5 years so I have adjusted to it. I just left college because I kind of had a realization that I want to persue my real passion of Environmental Studies. After taking Business classes for 7 years it’s getting a bit stale. I am going back in January.
Thank you. I've been feeling lost lately almost to the point of asking myself who am I when I'm not studying? This chat was really honest and it give me inspiration to take care of me so I don't end up on a mental hospital. Thank you
Online school is super cool if you have the right equipment (microphone with quick on / off switch, minimum two monitors, ... ). Everyone has to turn on the cameras to see each other. I have a lot more time that I don't have to waste getting to the lessons. I spend the saved time on what makes me happy and on getting enough sleep. A lot of people say how online school is bad. I am very happy because I get up and wind up with something that makes me happy and I have a good day from now on. I've never been happier and more refreshed while developing myself at work and school.
Hi John, thanks for posting this, I really needed it. Everyone just seems to be handling all of this so well, it’s so refreshing to see someone that smart and struggling being honest about this :)
Lesson 4 stuck out for me. In a previous video of yours, you'd talked about repurposing some effort from getting A's in school to spending time with friends and how that same effort produced much better overall results. This extends that same idea and is articulated in a way that makes it easier for task oriented people to understand!
My notebook during listening to this. Perfect, listening to the gold nuggets whilst thinking of person simulation in a RPG: "Person-to-person bonds and the Aloha personality engine: - when you spend ticks with someone, the NPC's neurons start to identify you - NPC starts to make a model of our behavior - while you act in novel way, your model is being built by NPC - at some point there happens a "crossover" - means that someone starts to expect you to do things in a way you have always done"
I completely agree on the point that my studies have definitely become me rather than a part of me. I just have to maintain the level. I too remember on my first year how I used to throw myself from class to class and be okay in not having fun and scoring good. I am just now on my second year trying to balance out. Thanks for all those advices👩🏻💻👌🏻
I really felt it when he said he was on top of his class, but still unhappy. I was an average grader in my high school but i was really happy! In college, I had been on top of my class for 3 years (into my final year now). But, it doesn't make me that happy. Also, the online semesters made it worse. I'd surely take the advice for taking care of myself more. Because we are more than just students.
This is actually one of the best advices that i heard until now . Goes straight to the point ,and its not some bs like : wake at x time , salute the sun , put more effort, etc . And one last advice (at least it helped me) DO NOT WATCH this kind of video at night (3 am , 4 am and so on ) , you end up in a horrible cycle where you plan everything you are going to do tomorrow , and when tomorrow comes , you do nothing . The night comes and you start all over again. Watch this kind of video in a moment where you can actually put in practice new things in your life
Hey John! THANKS A LOT! I just got into *IIT Bombay,* India's Best College for pursuing engineering. After preparing rigourously for 2.5yrs just to get into this college, I was too happy to join it... But since our semester is being held online, I was struggling a lot while studying at my dream college... Thanks a lot for this video... Love from INDIA!
Definitely dropped out I’m going back I just had anxiety and was mentally drained I’m learning how to manage this so when I enroll back this fall I can do better!! Know better good luck:))
I definitely agree with how you described how we should do self-care. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the same as how other influencers do it. I’m guilty about it as I did the same before. In the end, I actually became more unproductive. Also, I would feel extremely disappointed of myself or feel unfulfilled instead if I’m not able to do them. After knowing that, I decided to stop. Not that the influencers way of doing it are wrong, its just that every individual is different. They have different hobbies, likes and dislikes, things familiar and unfamiliar to us and to our daily activities, etc. Rather than sticking to each and every activity that they do, selectively choose what works for you. Right now my self-care rituals include activities that actually make me feel happy intentionally or unintentionally. I would exercise, take more hours of sleep, paint, play with my siblings, or contact a friend.
Currently, I'm at the worst part of the year. 7 exams in 3 weeks, while working 30h + 15 hours of tutoring.... is extremely exhausted. 5 more days to go, and the exams will be over. Maybe then I'll be less stressed out. I just have to survive 5 more days.
Hey I really apreciated the things that have you said about taking care of ourselves These months have been really hard Thanks for the video, really thank you
I'm really considering the option of a 1 year break, honestly, I'd rather go for just a semester but given how my college manages the semesters It's either being out 1 year or keep going It's so frustrating because I'm only 3 semesters away from finishing my career; I wanna finish this as soon as possible but I also don't want to do all of my projects while being frustrated, angry, tired due to Online Classes What the f*ck should I do?!
As a freshman in computer science, I totally agree! Im from Canada and we have approximately the same system as the one that you just described. This semester has been an absolute shit show and I really don't even recognize what i'm actually passionate about anymore! I'm thinking about switching over to Finance but the thing is that I can't really tell if I don't like C.S or if its simply the way that I am being thaught everything online. And if I were in your place, I would finish the last 3 semesters! You are almost done!
Thanks for reminding me John, sometimes I really prioritize school that I stop enjoying my hobbies and my social relationships start suffering. At the end of the day I’m not happy at all. So, I need to remind myself that I am many things and not just a student.
Hey John, Skillshare is awesome, I just begin to use it - Im learning Korean language on it - It is my fun time of the day as you say 'self care' and doing something which makes you happy everyday :) And when lockdown will be over in France, I ll go visit Korea!!! In the meantime, Im simply recording yoga videos everyday on my youtube channel (im a yoga teacher dont worry) - good challenge right ? love xxx
for me, even just keeping my phone turned over flat on the desk during online school makes a biG improvement. And then I sometimes place it right behind my laptop as well so I don't see it either.

Every video its just so complete in EVERY ASPECT and sense, thank you so much for sharing such a nice way of seeing the world
Lesson 4 stuck out for me. In a previous video of yours, you'd talked about repurposing some effort from getting A's in school to spending time with friends and how that same effort produced much better overall results. This extends that same idea and is articulated in a way that makes it easier for task oriented people to understand!
My notebook during listening to this. Perfect, listening to the gold nuggets whilst thinking of person simulation in a RPG:
"Person-to-person bonds and the Aloha personality engine:
- when you spend ticks with someone, the NPC's neurons start to identify you
- NPC starts to make a model of our behavior
- while you act in novel way, your model is being built by NPC
- at some point there happens a "crossover" - means that someone starts to expect you to do things in a way you have always done"
Watch this kind of video in a moment where you can actually put in practice new things in your life
thanks john! your message is awesome and you’re a big role model for me!
Thank you so much! I’m a computer Science at University of the People. So excited for you (and myself). Love your videos!
True mannn!!!! Self care is the best care
You bring such amazing constructive wisdom. Thank you.
What a great way of applying Lagrange-like constraints
Thank you so much for making this video!I’ve been really struggling with online school, this helped me gain some perspective )
Definitely dropped out I’m going back I just had anxiety and was mentally drained I’m learning how to manage this so when I enroll back this fall I can do better!! Know better good luck:))
for a person with my level of self-control online school is a nightmare.
This applies really well with working from home in general! No longer a student but love your advice. Thanks!!
This video gave me a lot to think about, I had forgotten that self-care is sooo important, thank you💖 you are always an inspiration to me 💖💖 :)
omg i read #ad as #sad and I was like same, John, same 😂
I love to study at school, not online because it stressed me out over time. This video helps me to cope up with this situation.
Don't push yourself too hard or you will be crazy LOL.
Currently, I'm at the worst part of the year. 7 exams in 3 weeks, while working 30h + 15 hours of tutoring.... is extremely exhausted. 5 more days to go, and the exams will be over. Maybe then I'll be less stressed out. I just have to survive 5 more days.
Best of luck :)
I have procrastinated a lot this semester and lost my motivation to do my work. It's been hard
Good! The growth book is back! Been waiting for months.
Hey I really apreciated the things that have you said about taking care of ourselves
These months have been really hard
Thanks for the video, really thank you
I'm really considering the option of a 1 year break, honestly, I'd rather go for just a semester but given how my college manages the semesters It's either being out 1 year or keep going
It's so frustrating because I'm only 3 semesters away from finishing my career; I wanna finish this as soon as possible but I also don't want to do all of my projects while being frustrated, angry, tired due to Online Classes
What the f*ck should I do?!
The constrained optimization analogy is awesome!
I started really strong but recently I have struggled. Im going to use thanksgiving break to regroup and finish strong.
I really hate online school, all my middle school was A+, I'm about to fail my first class ever right now.
Hey John, Skillshare is awesome, I just begin to use it - Im learning Korean language on it - It is my fun time of the day as you say 'self care' and doing something which makes you happy everyday :) And when lockdown will be over in France, I ll go visit Korea!!! In the meantime, Im simply recording yoga videos everyday on my youtube channel (im a yoga teacher dont worry) - good challenge right ? love xxx
John: I want to get grades that's satisfactory for me
Also John:gets an A
Thanks for all the advices John!! 👊🏻
I didn't knew I needed this video. Thank you John! Good luck with your coffee research🥰
Great video as always. Having a well balanced life is so important.
Thanks for your videos you helped me to be a better student.
one of the first videos on this topic that has been truly helpful for me. thank you :)
Would love to see a video from you about procrastination and how you deal with it !
Live your life as if you are yourself
The best line in the entire video .
for me, even just keeping my phone turned over flat on the desk during online school makes a biG improvement. And then I sometimes place it right behind my laptop as well so I don't see it either.
Super great advice regarding self care, I think a lot of people could benefit from taking on that type of mindset and understanding :)
Such an important message during these times! Thanks again for another great video John :)
Currently doing studies online. Will take some of your advice. Thanks, John. :)
Oh thank you. I'm really struggling with all that e-school lately..
You should really make a podcast! I would love to listen to it! Honestly, your tips are the best in my opinion. Keep it up :)
Wow today I was looking for a online school and right now your notification about the same topic
this is one of your best videos, so relatable and helpfull , thanks
6:32 needed to hear this..in my first semester of a phd and my health is declining. I will probably need to take a LOA. I know I’m more then that and I need to put myself first. Sad thing is I got injured more seeking care for my physical health. Wish I would’ve deferred for a year
Soo I am a CS student and I was literally learning about "constrained optimization", but decided to take a break and watch this video, I feel attacked rn...
I’m an Economics student and exactly same 😂 Its a sign to go study
omg for me it was the next thing to study i swear , i felt like it was a message to drop youtube now and go study
friend I love your content, I have learned many things thanks to you, greetings from Mexico
Spot on John👌
Hell ye
why do i read this in pewdiepie noise
Very sound advice. I only had 4 classes online so far, but totally different ballgame than campus.
