In an extended exclusive web release, Missy Elliott provides insightful reflections on the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and underscores the importance of Honoree Queen Latifah.
The Kennedy Center Honors is an annual honor given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is proud to celebrate the 46th Honorees for lifetime artistic achievements: actor and comedian Billy Crystal; acclaimed soprano Renée Fleming; British singer-songwriter producer, and member of the Bee Gees, Barry Gibb; rapper, singer, and actress Queen Latifah; and singer Dionne Warwick.
The event took place Sunday, December 3rd, 2023, in the Kennedy Center Opera House, and premieres Wednesday, December 27 at 8pm ET on CBS and will be available for viewing on Paramount+.

This made be tear up. Queen Latifah meant so much to young girls seeing her on their tv and hearing her empowering lyrics. Missy said exactly how those of us who witnessed it feel. QL was life changing for "us".
Missy made me cry especially when she spoke of Queen Latifah's mother and said it is pronounced MOTHA. That was an honorific that brought me back in the day. I'm a near 60 African American gay man. My motha provided me so many life lessons. She was not perfect but her imperfections taught me even more because it was what she did not do like the rest of folks did that made her so damned unique, powerful, and such a presence of fire/love. Fire/Love are the two coins of the essence of what I inherited from my motha. Dana Elaine Owens renamed herself Queen Latifah and created a blueprint that allowed both Black men and Black women and all women and all men if they so choose to recreate themselves in the image of someone who takes no prisoners but can do that with love and respect, which is what she demanded in return. Thank you Missy for capturing that so well. Thank you Queen for inspiring all of us Black folk to not internalize what the dominant culture -- yes that one -- derides and demeans and belittles us and deigns as our destiny. Queen Latifah's roadmap? Demand your respect, and do with a fire and love so brilliant, your star will outshine that which White folk cannot see in us. Amen.
And now let's get the ball rolling for Latifah's induction in the R&RHOF next year as an Early Pioneer. She's long overdue for the induction as well.
