  • Singer and its remarkable road cars need little introduction, so sit back and enjoy as Dickie Meaden enjoys the LA firms’s latest offering.

    Let's be honest, no one needs a car that costs $450k.
    If you're buying something that is a luxury, the "cost per whatever" metric is irrelevant. If I were mega-rich I would buy one of these first before I even contemplated a contemporary bonkers-fast car (Ferrari 458/488, Porsche GT3/RS/Turbo, Mclaren 650). Perfection.

    I love cars. I am obsessed with them. Old and new. I was born in Southern California and, in high school, I loved pulling my Volkswagen Beetle into the driveway to wash it on warm breezy day.
    Fast forward 15 years. I moved to NYC to be an artist. I am carless and it's killing me. I feel stuck. Trapped on this island with no way out. Rental cars are not the answer. They are lifeless. My only respite is to spend countless hours researching and dreaming about cars through this inflexible glowing screen.
    From the Toyota Prius to the Rolls Royce Phantom, all cars are noble expressions of human engineering, ingenuity, and creativity. For me, however, there is one car that sits at the apex of all others.
    If I can own just one automobile in the world it would be a Porsche by Singer, specifically the 911 Targa. I do not say this flippantly. Yes, the 911 Targa is a masterpiece at the level of Michelangelo's Pieta. It is rolling sculpture. Every curve, every detail is excruciatingly crafted. It is so beautiful that, upon a glance, Medusa herself would turn to stone.
    My hairs stand up on the back of my neck. My arms and legs go numb. My whole body trembles. I weep.
    In the end, I don't know how I will ever be able to afford a Porsche by Singer. Yes, like the author of this video, if I could choose just one car to own and drive for the rest of my life, it would be a Porsche by Singer. Now my dream becomes my nightmare...

    If Singer are selling them for £450k then they're clearly worth it to some lucky people. I think the question should be "are they £300k better than the best Porsche from the factory?" Often things can be greater than the sum of its parts. Take a very expensive watch. It doesn't keep time better than a Casio. But they are nice to own, look at. touch.

    • @elms350z
      @elms350z 9 лет назад +4

      +Del Johnson It would certainly be a delightful problem to have. The Singer, IMO, is more beautiful than any of the current production Porsches, but I'd rather have a 991 GT3 RS or Turbo S for that kind of money.

    All these comments arguing about price and power and comparing Singer to cars like a 458 or GT3 RS. They just simply aren't in the same class. Hate plugging someone else's work here but CH has a nice long video that goes a bit more in depth on how these Singer 911's came to be and what goes in to each and every car. It's incredible. And if you still feel the need to compare this to cars that cost much less after watching CH's video, well, you just don't understand what these 911's are all about.

    The guy clearly loves his 911s and I get everything he says about the car being bits and pieces of the best 911 imaginable. Yes, Porsche makes great cars even now, but there's something visceral and emotional about air cooled engines in the early cars. The Singer 911 amps up all the good things about the 964 and leaves out the bad, like snap-oversteer handling and leaky engines. Worth every penny, I'd say.

    £450,000 for 4,000 hours work? That's £112.50 per hour - cheaper than most London main dealers labour charge and that's without parts! Seriously, this car is a work of art. See the /drive vid with Chris Harris and then make your mind up. As well as everything you can see, everything you can't see is - wiring harness for example - made the best it can be. Of course it's not the cheapest way to get from A to B, a regular 911 isn't either, but it is one of the best ways in which to do it. Def on my lottery win list!

  • @addict3583
    @addict3583 9 лет назад

    Great video Dickie...the cars cost 400-600 USD (plus your 964) due to all the options available. engine, targa, seats, suspension etc. I am one of the insane folks who laid down the cash...I am not a banker and didn't come from money. Their are times when I question the price...then I get in the car and drive it and all those thoughts disappear. Next to competitive racing (or having sex when you're 17) it can rally the same emotions. I feel certain Rob and the boys do not make a killing on these and I don't think that is why they are in this game...Rob is wonderfully mad and measures his success on how perfect the car is and not how much he puts in his pocket. They are also magnificent after the sale...not just out the door and out of mind. Not too concerned with price going up or down as this is one car that I will not be letting go.

    What a beautiful machine. Shame about the price, but it's not hard to see where the money goes for me. Agree 100% with Meaden, if I had the $$$ I would go straight past the Ferrari/McLaren et al. dealerships and get one of these....

    $450K Is one thing, but what will the price be in the next 10 years? Will it go up in value or deflate?

      +Matonias Hard to say. Singer is able to do what they're doing because Porsche's are very popular with collectors at the moment, but if the bubble bursts, then it will affect Singer as well.

      +Matonias The owners probably have 10+ cars and $100+ million in the bank and maybe don't care? To be more responsive to your Q, I can't imagine inflating because people can always go to Singer with an 964 and get theirs done.

      Michael Cohen Would be interesting to see when they quit their business, for what ever reason , what happens with the prices. Singers will be limited then, but if they rise in price, thats the question :o

      Matonias Hmm. Let's play that out. If they quit its probably because the market for them fell. Singers would be scarce but the market has fallen. Also, there's a bunch of others getting into the old Porshe restomod game which is inevitable since the market is strong and that means there's more competition. There's Magnus Walker and here's somebody in Wisconsin doing them with more of a track orientation. jalopnik.com/this-shop-in-wisconsin-makes-the-best-air-cooled-porsch-1739546953?trending_test_c&.H_y_0o51QhmMY_tue7bevQ.3&A%2F%2Fjalopnik.com%2Ftag%2Fporsche%3Ftrending_test_c
      I could imagine a scenario where the Porsche market tanks, Singer go out of business and Singers fall in price. Then the market bounces back, but Singer the company doesn't and the rare cars become valuable again.

      +zaco21 LMAO nothing special? How about a full carbon fibre body and 400hp air cooled engine. It's as fast as a 911 GT3 RS to 60mph.

    I thought he was gonna say like 130k, but 450k?!
    You can get a diamond encrusted Phantom for that, I'm sure it's great to drive but my god.
    I'd just get an 80's 911 and a house instead.

      4000 hours of work done by master craftsman… it’s worth every penny. My old neighbour was a modest man who owned 5% of oil giant BP, he had a 600k house but a 20 million pound garage. That included a F40, F50, enzo and of course, one of these beauties.

    £450,000? Completely worth it, especially as you get to spec it however you like, every little detail.
