So You Want To Be a Writer?

  • so you want to be a writer?
    by Charles Bukowski
    full poem:
if it doesn't come bursting out of you
    in spite of everything,
    don't do it.
unless it comes unasked out of your
heart and your mind and your mouth
    and your gut,
    don't do it.
if you have to sit for hours
    staring at your computer screen
    or hunched over your
    typewriter
    searching for words,
    don't do it.
if you're doing it for money or
    fame,
    don't do it.
if you're doing it because you want
    women in your bed,
    don't do it.
if you have to sit there and
    rewrite it again and again,
    don't do it.
if it's hard work just thinking about doing it,
    don't do it.
if you're trying to write like somebody
    else,
    forget about it.
if you have to wait for it to roar out of
    you,
    then wait patiently.
if it never does roar out of you,
    do something else.
if you first have to read it to your wife
or your girlfriend or your boyfriend
or your parents or to anybody at all,
    you're not ready.
don't be like so many writers,
don't be like so many thousands of
    people who call themselves writers,
don't be dull and boring and
pretentious, don't be consumed with self-
    love.
the libraries of the world have
    yawned themselves to
    sleep
    over your kind.
    don't add to that.
    don't do it.
    unless it comes out of
    your soul like a rocket,
    unless being still would
    drive you to madness or
    suicide or murder,
    don't do it.
unless the sun inside you is
    burning your gut,
    don't do it.
    when it is truly time,
and if you have been chosen,
    it will do it by
itself and it will keep on doing it
until you die or it dies in you.
    there is no other way.
    and there never was.

Ngl some of this is terrible advice, tons of writers have talked about hating the process but enjoying the outcome of writing, it’s normal to spend hours staring at your typewriter and not writing anything.
Great writing doesn’t magically burst out of you, great writing is often thoughtful and honest.
Obviously writing for money or fame is definitely not the right way to approach writing and that I agree with

As someone who's been writing for nearly a decade now, there is no consistency in who you are. At least for me there isn't. Every day I'm a different person, and every day I feel different. And inspiration comes and goes. Some days I feel such urge to write that overshadows everything else in my life. Other days I don't feel like doing it at all.
It's easy to make bold statements like this, but they completely neglect the complex reality. And the reality for a lot of people who may not feel like writing every day, but cannot imagine themselves being anything but a writer. This is not a choice. And to tell them "don't do it" is to kill their only calling in their life.

To me, this poem means that if this poem alone is enough for you to stop writing, then you were never going to be a writer in the first place. And it also means to me at least that I'm doing something right bc it does burst from me, I wouldn't live without writing. Of course, there are moments when I don't feel like writing the world ain't all sunshine and raimbows. We all should know that by now. But if we push through the rain, we will see the raimbows for a bried second before it begins raining again. And that is enough for me as a writer. I enjoy the process, every second of it, even when it's hard.

A Real Writer is not only passionate, but he has to write, because it's in his DNA. This is what he meant by using all these qualifiers to illistrate the point that a Real has to write by his nature or by design, he has no other choice but to write, in other words, that's what he meant in a nutshell. Charles Bukowski really nailed that feeling in this one. One thing I’ve learned as a musician is that some of your best work will be that which comes out naturally with very little to no thought at all. Although unlike Bukowski, I would say that you MUST create as much as you can. Try out all the weird and bad ideas and get them out of your system so you can get to those good ideas.

    Yeah, no.
Motivation doesn’t last. At some point it comes down to discipline. Take this exact same advice and apply it to fitness… we’d have like 2 ripped dudes in the world Schwarzenegger and the Rock.
Stop mystifying practical pursuits. My first day of my songwriting class, we basically got beat over the head with the fact that songwriters don’t wait to be inspired. They do the work, and make great music.
They’ve done studies with photography - one half of the class was graded on quality, and the other on quantity. The side that was graded for quantity did better. Why? Because it’s a skill. Like any skill, you can improve. Writing is no different.
Some are more naturally inclined. Some people objectively and measurably have better talent, skills, and insights. But talent alone won’t produce great work.
The mystical “only if you have words flowing out of you” idea of a writer is horsecrap. It’s not how it works.
As someone who has recently taken on writing consistently - I’ve learned that it’s a skill set, not purely an art form.

I was never big on writing or reading, but in the last week, I decided to pick up a book and read it. Now I’m starting to write, in the matter of like 2-3 days, I’ve written 3 chapters in a book that I’m writing. It’s probably an awful book that most likely won’t catch anyone’s attention but I’m having fun doing it. I’m not good with using big words which doesn’t help the process of writing a book but I’m enjoying coming up with new ideas. It’s like the ideas are flowing out of me every second of everyday.

I see a lot of comments against his advice, but if his words stop you from being a Writer, you were never meant to be one! Wrinting is in a Writer's DNA. No one can preven you being a writer, but you yourself. You just have to have something to say from your own unique perspective. There's have never ever been anyone quite like you in the universe nor will there be anyone quite like you ever again. Every human being on this earth have exactly the same DNA (99.9) with a .1 variation, this makes us all brothers and sisters, and the .1 variation causes all the problems in the world today, because this makes each and every last one us uniquely different from one another (this includes our individuality, our race and ethnicity, and the color of our skin and texture of our hair), we are exactly the same, but uniquely different from one another. We see things from our unique perspectives, this is what makes a real writer, and not a copycat one.

Total bullshit. Real writing takes work, real writers are the ones who can sit down at an empty page or a blank screen and work until they have something in front of them.
Waiting for it to happen to you is a guaranteed way to never find the inspiration you need. You have to want it yes, you have to want it more than you could ever imagine. You have to find it, but when you do find it, you have to work as hard as you can to turn that inspiration into something real.
And the real trick? Learning how to find it on demand. Learning how to create something from nothing whenever you want. Learning how to do the work. That’s what the true writers have mastered. And if you’re waiting around for it to come out of nowhere? It’s never going to happen to you.

Quickest way to dry up the creative juices is to be arrogant. This stuff that comes “roaring “ out of you is not coming from you and doesn’t belong to you. A person needs to know when to shut up. It’s the fourth rule of writing (any endeavor): to know, to dare, to do, and fourthly, to keep silent. Mr. Know It All, you’re in danger of losing what you have. It’s a gift that can be taken back. Then what will you have to say to us aspiring authors? Huh?

It depends on the story. If you have to do a lot of rewrites, or your story is very complicated then of course youre gonna have blocks most of the time or staring at the empty page.
Its normal and it shows that youre doing some critical thinking. It would be more worrisome if you think every line you write and think up on the fly is gold and perfect.

How many of you say to yourself, I’ll just write a paragraph, and find you have written 2 1/2 pages? A lot of you!
Writing begets writing. Make yourself available. A lot of you always carry paper and a pen in your pocket, Huh?
Me too. And how many compose full blown dialogue in your bed half asleep? Ha ha. And you’re so angry that you left your paper and pen in the other room. Oh well, I’ll remember it in the morning. You don’t. Ha ha, writing is so fun! Realize you are your own treasure. That little bit of dialogue is still inside you; don’t fret. Besides it’s not coming from you anyway. You have been bitten, and the wound never heals, ha ha.

This is probably some of the worst advice anyone's ever given. If anyone here wants to be a writer, please do not listen to this. It's a skill. No one's jus magically amazing at a skill when they first start. Get good at it. I can't stress enough how awful this advice is. So, so bad.

Bukowski was a drunk romantic. And really, not as great a poet as he thought he was. A lot of this is his own self-contempt turned inside out, flagellating others. I’d take him with about five platefuls of salt - or possibly pepto.

    • @tacofingerz7247
      @tacofingerz7247 Год назад +3

Not really, Kings philosophy is all about rewriting, write shit until its not shit, sometimes it does burst in the most unexpected moment but if all you do is to wait for those moments without actually sit down sometimes to stare at nothing and work on it you won't make it pass your first work. Its the soul and the talent are nothing without work, and not everybody write for the same very reasons, some enjoy the process more and viceversa, the only good advice here is that no matter how long did that idea take, don't pretened or be fake about it, sometimes you have the idea that naturally came to you but sometimes youll need to rewrite it so its actually worth reading, substance, then aesthetics. Each process is gold on its own as long as its real. "So you want to be a writer" is not Bukowskis field, the man as a writer is one thing, as a teacher? Black and white.
