    Of all the titles listed, "The Rescuers Down Under" was the most personal for me. I genuinely enjoyed it thoroughly and still watch it now and then 30 years later.

      I was too young to realize it was a flop. I definitely wore out that VHS tape

    I remember seeing Treasure Planet in the theater and being disappointed simply because it seemed to be trying too hard and being too safe. It reminded me of a something that had been designed by a committee and ended up without the edge or charm that I really hoped it would have. The thing about "Strange World" is that, well, I never actually saw any promotional material for the movie. I didn't even know it existed until very recently. So you are off the hook.

    Josh, why did you single-handedly ruin the marketing for strange world? you had one assignment.

      So you're saying that the ukulele apology wasn't good enough?

    Disney just doesn’t do well with sci-fi. Strange World, Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Meet the Robinsons, etc.
    For some reason they consistently miss the mark with this genre and I’m not sure why.

    I've always been baffled by why The Rescuers Down Under did so poorly at the box office. I mean, it was promoted on a number of Disney VHS releases both before it came out in theatres in 1990, and before it came out on home video in 1991. The hospital I spent alot of time at even had posters for the movie all over the place in 1990 and 1991. Also, as a fellow Josh I am very disappointed in your hand in the marketing for Strange World. You had one job Josh! ONE JOB! I think this should go before the Council of Joshs in order to decide whether you should continue to carry the name 😆

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  9 месяцев назад +1

      I thought that the ukulele apology was more than sufficient. I don't want to talk with the whole council. That seems like so much work!

      @@ModernMouse Ugh, fine...but only because it's the weekend and the Council of Joshs is fully booked for the next twenty years anyway. Lol. All joking aside, I think The Rescuers Down Under really didn't do well because it was the sequel to a movie that nobody had seen in seven years, since it only had that one theatrical re-release in 1983, when Mickey's Christmas Carol came out, and wouldn't have a home video release for another two years after the sequel came out. So why put out a sequel to a movie that nobody had access to? Also, the success of Science Fiction movies is entirely situational. I mean when Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet came out we were in the middle of the Star Wars prequels, the final movie starring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation was about to come out, and Sci-Fi was everywhere on TV. But the general audience just didn't care. Strange World was just sabotaged by Disney itself. But the 2000s animated Sci-Fi movies should've done better.

    • @ModernMouse
      @ModernMouse  9 месяцев назад +1

      Interestingly, I think we are in a similar place now...not that you can't find movies to watch if you wanted to, but because many people have phased out physical media and so many films and tv shows come out all the time, sequels to films of the distant past aren't connecting with people. Nobody remembers because it's been too long, nobody owns it, and there is too much other stuff to watch.

    • @tgif1345
      @tgif1345 9 месяцев назад

      @@ModernMouse Exactly. And with the Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under, there was also a huge span of time between home video releases. There was seven years between VHS releases of The Rescuers in the '90s and then four years between the 1999 release and the 2003 VHS and DVD releases, and The Rescuers Down Under had the one VHS and Laserdisc release in 1991 and then we didn't see it on home video again until 2000/2001 when it came out on VHS for the last time, and got its first DVD release. So when movies are that out of sight, out of mind, of course they aren't gonna do well. Even the Blu-ray releases of both movies were relegated to a 2-movie pack, and there was alot of time between each release. And, if I remember correctly, the most recent one was a Disney Movie Club Exclusive, so that limits things even more. Which is a shame, because I do really enjoy both Rescuers movies, AND Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

    Wish has been recieved mixed reviews. It has been the worst Disney 100th ever. People still attacking Disney, box office flops and bombs, Disney near bankrupt, etc. I am starting to hate on Canada because of the people.

    • @ModernMouse

      i wouldn't say that it's Disney's worst year ever, as the early 80s nearly saw the company go away forever. I don't think we are in that bad of shape, but they've definitely had a rough year or so in terms of getting back to where they were in the public eye pre-pandemic. I kind of hope that Wish has the same fate as Elemental. A movie that people shrug off initially but gains some momentum as it's in theaters. I can see the possibility of the critical scores and the audience scores being very different for this movie. Time will tell I guess.

    Having read all the Chronicles of Pyrdain books. The Black Cauldron book is my favorite followed by the High King and Taran the Wanderer. If Disney is looking for a movie to remake; this movie is a worthy candidate for a live-action adaptation trilogy similar to Lord of the Rings.

    When you were drawing Splat in that promotional video 📹 at Disney studios you were sitting next to Andre the Black Nerd 🤓 I wasn't a big fan of Strange World the film itself but I will say it didn't deserve to flop as bad as it did the marketing for it was pretty weak a lot of my own friends and family didn't even knew the movie existed until I told them about it when I went to see it in theaters last November I was the only one in the theater next to one small family

    Atlantis: The lost empire is like one of my top 3 favorite Disney films. I actually grew up watching the sequel. Cause it was on Netflix. 4:12 The Black Cauldron is visually appealing. 9:40 What’s wrong with that?!

    • @ModernMouse

      If you are asking what's wrong with the post-pandemic system of films playing in shorter windows, it's because we've grown accustom as audience members to just wait for the film to stream on our TVs which, for Disney as a business, isn't great. For us, it's totally fine, although I do personally enjoy the theater experience. I like turning my phone off and having a reason to tune out the rest of the world for a few hours. Since this video was about box office numbers though, meaning movie theater ticket sales, the post-pandemic shift to how we watch movies really didn't help Strange World at all.

    I enjoyed The Rescuers Down Under as a kid I watched it on VHS 📼 I didn't see Treasure Planet in theaters when I was 11 but I don't feel as it aged well as a Disney classic IMO the animation and voice casting is good but the story wasn't really all that interesting and the characters were just alright
