Small shops do this all the time and for good reason- they have to make a profit. Starbucks are usually franchised- they have to make a profit to stay afloat or they shut down.
People will find ANYTHING to complain about. Many places do this; some I’ve seen will say it’s because they have a homeless problem. Some places if they see you pull in right off the highway will let you use the bathroom anyway since they assume you’re on a long trip. But if I walk into a Starbucks specifically, I’m going to buy a frappe and leave. If you need to use the bathroom on the road, there are plenty of stops, but in cases of people just going in to loiter, the place of business has a right to kick them out. Edit: Also, many places you have to ask for the key to the bathrooms anyway. I don’t think anyone questions that because it makes it easier to find out who’s just using up the bathroom as opposed to people just sneaking in.
It is about damn time !!! I have never sat in a Starbucks coffee shop without purchasing anything and I don't sit there all day.. I have gone in a Starbucks to order coffee and something to eat and I have seen a lot of people who are too cheap to use their Lap tops at home but use Starbucks' WiFi .but never buy anything . I only go to Starbucks to have coffee and something to eat with a good friend and we stay about 30 minutes to an hour talking and then we leave . You are right on spot about people abusing the open policy ,because while a friend and I were sitting in a Starbucks having coffee ,I observed a someone come in a nd sat at a table for four people and sat up their lap top, using Starbucks WiFi and never once ordered anything !!!'
I knew a guy who worked nights and he asked if he could have a quick wash in the sink when he picked up his food on the way home. Because he bought something every day (almost) they didn't have a problem with it. That is it... If you ask, nicely, and buy something, most places will be nice back and allow you to do certain things that otherwise would be a no no. That is the top and tail. Just be nice, don't take the piss and clean up after yourself.
Haha...you wanna hear a joke. That was the original title on my thumbnail. But, I said...nah...people probably won't get the reference. Good to see that you did!
My daughter worked at Tim Hortons for 13 years and the mess is the restrooms was DISGUSTING! Needles on the floor, poop on the floor, poop smeared on the walls, used sanitary supplies plugging the toilets. People smoked in the bathrooms frequently. She was expected to clean up the mess daily. The only PPE her employer provided were the light weight plastic gloves usually used when the staff were handling food. They even called her during her Grandfather's funeral to see if she could pick up a shift that afternoon! She had booked the day off, they ALL knew why she was away. I'm thankful she is out of that hole.
Bravo SB! I like to patronize SB from time to time but usually use their drive-thru or walk in pickup services. As an establishment its their right to exercise this to weed out the leeches.
Yes. Any company, be it a small business or a large corporation, have a right to protect their profits. I think this is mostly done since lots of large cities especially in the west coast, have a huge homelessness problem, though.
The Starbucks near me (in the UK) now lock their bathroom - you get a code from them if you need to use it, and you only get the code once you have purchased something. Good practice. McDonalds also blocked off their open entrance between them and a large corporate grocery store because people shopping were then nipping into McDs to use their toilets,
There have been times where I have gone into a business and had intentions of buying something, but nature was calling and I didn't have time to stand there and order something first and then get the key or code.
My dad says if you use need to use the bathroom and you pop into a store always buy something even if it's small like a pack of gum. This just always mades sense to me, it's not a public facility. You don't want to buy anything, hold it until you get home or find a public toilet 🤷♀️
I know a Burger King that had a voluntary tip for the toilet cleaner for years. Whenever I was in the area and "in dire need", I bought a coffee or something small AND gave the cleaner a tip. A few weeks ago I was in that area again, about after a year. The use of the toilet is now only for a fixed fee. And no matter if you buy something or not. I'm fine with that. The times call for certain measures.
Will Starbucks eventually put a time stipulation on people sitting in their stores? Someone could go into a Starbucks, and buy the smallest, cheapest coffee or pastry and sit in there for hours.
The problem with social ideologies is that they never think about the execution and how selfish human beings are. We are drawn to exploit the kindness of others. Self-serving at best. Especially in a society that pushes individualism on a daily.
My fiancé and I both think it's embarrassing to walk into an establishment to use the bathroom without buying something, even if we truly don't want it, and I believe that's how it should be. Like Rogan said, people will always take advantage.

Tim Hortons found an easy solution and removed seatings in troubled locations. Starbucks isn't that far from that. We have many Starbucks locations in Vancouver with 10 or less seating spots.
@@Ralph-id3xg Also many more places are starting to lock the bathrooms and you have to ask for the key. My local Tim’s and A&W have done this in the last year, I expect Wendy’s to be next. Before that I’ve been at Tim’s and waited 20-45 minutes for someone to come out of the bathroom.
@@Ozziecatsmom This has been the case for most coffee shops in Vancouver for the past decade. It is either a key or the bathroom has to be unlocked through a buzzer system from the cashier. (barista). There are a lot of overdoses happening in bathrooms and employees most of the time don't have the training to deal with these situations. There are also a lot of thiefts. My pas roomate worked at a Blenz downtown and reported that many street people come to the shop waiting for customers to go to bathroom and steal their belongings. The city is wild.
I completely understand the sitting down rule. You're taking up space from paying customers. Bathrooms had me questioning until I heard naked people washing then it became "we can't have nice things" situation.

@@AspiringNormie Yea, but you could say that with any establishment that doesn't already have a no-pay no stay policy in place no? Wonder why Starbucks would be singled out like that versus lets say McDonalds or Dunkin
Surprised that you never heard of why this policy started. 2 black men in Philadelphia went into a Starbucks in 2018 didn't buy anything and loitered at a table. the manager told them they had to leave if they weren't going to buy anything. They refused, cops called and they were arrested. This caused a national uproar with protests across the nation crying racism. The CEO actually had to personally apologize and paid a confidential settlement to the 2 men. After that a national policy was started where anybody could come in and stay as long as they want without buying anything.
I've always stopped at Starbucks when traveling as a bathroom stop but got a venti refresher on my way out. Another hour or two repeat. LOL. But it was some place I felt was clean and safe to stop. So I absolutely have no problem with paying customers only.

I used to use the Veteran's Admin Hospital in our capital city for healthcare, and usually my elderly mother would go with me--it was a 2-hour drive so quite an undertaking for the day. When there, she and I always stopped at the Starbuck's located inside the main hospital. Since it was a very old building, there was little room but they squeezed it in there across the hospital pharmacy. The downside was, patients waiting for their prescriptions always wanted to sit over at the Starbucks while they waited for their prescriptions--sometimes an hour depending on how busy they were. Since my Mom and I are both disabled, both mobility-impaired, we needed to sit down in order to enjoy our coffee drinks, but that was often impossible due to the crowd waiting for the pharmacy. Since we live in a rural area, there are no Starbucks near us, so these were our only opportunity to have a Starbuck coffee. So I'm curious how they're going to handle those stores that are situated inside hospitals, like the VA that I use.
These places should be more like Germany where if there's a free seat, a stranger can sit at that table. I actually go into these places to buy stuff and often see the laptop hobos occupying 4 seats so they can finish writing their novel. The place is just not comfortable enough to sit for hours, IMHO.
I’m glad about this, as a worker I’m tired of people coming in only to shave their beard in the bathroom and leave their hairy mess, clogging the sink. It’s annoying when Sketchers managers come into the cafe to have a meeting loudly and have to hear about their quarterly reports whilst having the audacity to tell us to be quiet while we’re busy trying to communicate to each other crafting people’s orders over the sounds of blenders and ovens and other machinery.
Wait wait wait!!! They tell YOU GUYS to be quiet so that THEY can have THEIR meeting? Sounds like Sketchers HQ needs to rent them a boardroom. Lolol. People are insaneeee. The minute they said that I would start cranking things up in the kitchen! 🤣🤣🤣
At one point I worked for a grocery store in a west coast city and had to clean the public restrooms. I saw things that if I came home and saw it in my bathroom I would have just moved out on the spot.
I worked at a starbucks and the way these people would abuse tf out of asking for water cups drove me nuts! It got to a point where people started asking for cups of toppings since we technically can't charge them for that in the system. It was so bad....glad I got out of there!
I totally agree with Starbucks on this one. I've been and seen the nasty bathrooms and folks lingering there plugged in WIFI and no drinks there or anything.
I sometimes go to a local Subway and EVERY TIME there is a homeless guy sitting at the last booth. He lives there. Kids that work there CANT DO ANYTHING.
I used to work at a Panera cafe one of the big ones and it was so annoying when customers who were eating food from other places would take up our seats for 4+ hours and not even buy a lemonade or a cookie
In Berlin we have a company named Wall, they are cooperating with the city and the public transport company. A win, win, win solution. They provide and maintain seating at nearly every bus stop in town in return the company can place their ads all over the city. The second service is public toilet cells. You pay 1€ to open the door and after you leave the whole cell is cleaned automatically which is quite reassuring.
This is great and long overdue. I think it's important to feel safe when you go in to enjoy your coffee, and it's past time that restaurants prioritize their paying clientele.
I’m all for this! Kudos Starbucks, heaven forbid people actually go to a BUSINESS and put in rules to those who don’t want to actually purchase something in said business. Whether big or small mom and pop.
Dude i cannot wait. I deep cleaned our bathrooms last night and i had to clean poop, blood, snot, and some other mysterious substance off the walls. The toilets are almost never flushed and theres always toilet paper thrown everywhere. And the worst part is im in a pretty rural area with almost no homeless people so its literally just our regulars breaking our toilet seats and trashing the place. @toddw.8277
I don't believe that legally they can limit their bathrooms to paying customers only. I remember in the 70s that a store in my small hometown would charge a dime to use the bathroom. They did away with that when the SCOTUS ruled that businesses cannot charge to use a public bathroom. Now, insisting a bathroom only be used by customers isn't exactly charging to use a public restroom, but it's pretty close.
? How are you struggling to find public toilets? I live in the Houston, TX area and there are public restrooms all over. Any gas station has a public restroom.
@@TheSwauzz Oh I mean in LA, San Fran and NY.. although those places now seem to be a toilet themselves. The more I watch JRE the more attractive TX becomes!

I'm in agreement. I consider it part of the service for being a customer. I'm hoping Starbucks will bring back the music for the stores. I'd get my coffee, listen to artists i wasn't familiar with, and enjoy the experience. 😊
A few years ago I would go to Catholic Church on Wednesday nights to help out when they would feed the homeless. One night I went to the bathroom before we got started when I opened the door there was a guy shaving and bathing at one of the sinks. I felt bad because I knew he was homeless but I also knew it wasn't sanitary. That being said I definitely understand the move Starbucks is making.
This is a common thing in Jamaica. Some places will allow you to use the bathroom without buying anything but to just sit in there and not buy anything is crazy….im trying to remember where I went to Starbucks to us the restroom and had to get buzzed into the bathroom. It wasn’t strange to me. Here in Brazil and in many cities in central and Eastern Europe, the ‘public’ bathrooms aren’t free either. Gotta pay for that
I worked at Starbucks in 2016 and had a lady who would bring in garbage bags of stuff and flush them down our toilet. Our theory was that she was getting rid of a body because this thing went on for months. I brought it up to my manager and they told me we couldn't do anything about it. Also I would work at other stores and the baristas would tell me about the deaths of drug addicts overdosing in the bathrooms, but would lock themselves in - so they couldn't close properly and would need to contact the authorities to extract the bodies. It's a horrible experience for baristas.
yay. boundaries are a thing again. seeing this concept popping up literally everywhere now. while discrimination has no place anywhere, everything is not for everyone.
I live in Portugal and over here Starbucks policy is you pay you sit since forever , in order to use the bathroom you have to buy something and they give you a code . I’m shocked to know that in USA it was not the same. Personally I don’t feel comfortable using the bathroom of a café, small shop without buying anything. Ps: that haircut looks very nice

It’s a business. A business has the right to give out free bathrooms but also has the right to take them away. They are not public restrooms paid for by the government/state/city/municipality. These are restrooms owned by a company and taken care of by the company and its employees. If I use a restroom at a business outside of grocery shopping or a bookstore, I’ll always buy something. When I lived in Europe, you had to pay for almost every single bathroom. And some restaurants like McDonalds and Burger King had keypads on their bathroom that required a code. The only way to get that code was to buy something, because the code would be on the bottom of the receipt. I fully support them making this choice.
I remember years ago when Borders bookstores had to start a similar policy because people would get a book and hang out in the cafe all day to read it.

Hey Rogan, I loved this video! Very happy for the enforcement of this new policy that aims to create a better environment inside the shops. However, I seem to have find a bit of a loophole within it; say I bring a party of four people to the shop. We all sit at the same table, 1 orders a drink, the other 3 do not. I'm just wondering (curiously) would the other 3 also have to order in order to uphold the policy, or is one order per table/party enough to uphold it? I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Some idealistic person invited a homeless person back to their home, wanting to change their life, the homeless person stole their watch and left.
Was that idealistic person you? If so, that's unfortunate.
In my country there was a case when an old lady gave money (from her funeral money) to a poor guy for months.
The guy "unalived" her and set her and her place on fire to get rid of the evidence (he wasn't successful tho, fortunately).
Small shops do this all the time and for good reason- they have to make a profit.
Starbucks are usually franchised- they have to make a profit to stay afloat or they shut down.
Even if you didn't want a drink just to use the bathroom, buy a cake pop or something. This is not a new concept.
Yep
No. I'm not buying something just to do a basic human right. It's either I shit here or I shit in the street.
"hurry up and buy!"
I am happy she is gone, too! Good for her. That sounds like a hell hole. These companies need to hire external cleaners!
Blame the government for not caring about the tons of ppl with mental disabilities on the street with no help.
Thank you!!!! They are absolutely leeches. Thanks for watching!
just buy something these places are there to make money
I always thought it was crazy they did it in the first place😂 of course people were going to abuse it. People take kindness for weakness.
Every single time. The innocent always suffer for the guilty. Thanks for watching!
Showering in the sink? 🤢Shooting up in the bathroom? 😮😮😮 America is crazy
@catnip9253 sometimes when nature calls, you can't hold it.
Will Starbucks eventually put a time stipulation on people sitting in their stores? Someone could go into a Starbucks, and buy the smallest, cheapest coffee or pastry and sit in there for hours.
Love your videos! I appreciate how you present an issue from all sides. ❤
Thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it and thanks for saying that!
Damn. I didn't know this was a thing. This isn't a thing in the countries I've been to.
When that 💨 noise happened while you’re describing seeing the 💩 on the wall, it got me laughing so hard I was shaking! 😂
Listennnnnnnn...I have walked into Starbucks bathrooms and seen poop on the wall. I nearly died.
Funny how the OLD ways are the best ways (and RIGHT). 🤣🤣🤣
i always buy something as a courtesy if i am there to use their wifi
if i wanted free i'd go to a library
The problem with social ideologies is that they never think about the execution and how selfish human beings are. We are drawn to exploit the kindness of others. Self-serving at best. Especially in a society that pushes individualism on a daily.
My fiancé and I both think it's embarrassing to walk into an establishment to use the bathroom without buying something, even if we truly don't want it, and I believe that's how it should be. Like Rogan said, people will always take advantage.
I'm just like you and your boyfriend. If I have to use the bathroom at an establishment, I prefer to buy something....even if it's small.
@@ThisBahamianGyal It's just common courtesy. But, you know there are so many people who are just entitled and believe that they deserve it all just because so naturally they'll be the ones losing it about this.
@@tashvelez7286 This is not always the case. You have to be TAUGHT these things and "common" courtesy to you is different to someone else. Just like "common sense" isn't a real thing. We all like to assume other people know all the same things we do, but that's just simply not true and it's ignorant to believe so. I wasn't taught to buy something at any place I stop to use the restroom at, so I don't. That doesn't make me entitled, that makes me different than you.
Rogan! I enjoy your channel as you feel like a friend sharing smart and entertaining ideas. Great work!

@@Ralph-id3xg Unfortunately everywhere is getting wild.
I completely understand the sitting down rule. You're taking up space from paying customers. Bathrooms had me questioning until I heard naked people washing then it became "we can't have nice things" situation.
Yup! It's a business, not a homeless shelter!
There's a Starbucks a few stores down from my job and a homeless guy stays there all day. It's disturbing him in his shopping cart just in there chillin all day. I might sound mean but this is in a upscale area I don't wanna see that.
I am soooo glad they’ve brought this policy back; we rocked this one in pdx & it was nice to see people respond to manners w manners.
Honestly, I didn't know that Starbucks didn't have this policy in place already. Doesn't most establishments have this policy??
@@Itsnotthatdeep88 They didn't have this policy because they were afraid of causing offense. However, welcoming non-paying customers to stay indefinitely, isn't going to turn profits.
I stopped going to Starbucks years ago for exactly the reasons stated. I may consider returning.
people need to support their local libraries. they literally exist to provide this kind of thirdspace to the community.
happy about the new policy. will start going more often.
We have to politely tell them “Hi, I’m sorry, we have a new policy..” and if there is conflict we’re supposed to have the manager talk to them.
I've always stopped at Starbucks when traveling as a bathroom stop but got a venti refresher on my way out. Another hour or two repeat. LOL. But it was some place I felt was clean and safe to stop. So I absolutely have no problem with paying customers only.
Definitely find value in your videos. I always learn something! 😍🤓
Thank you so much!!! That means a lot. Especially considering someone just commented that this was a waste of a video. I appreciate you! 🥰🥰
I must live under a rock… I had no idea this was a thing. Every company should implement these rules… buy something to enjoy our WiFi, period.
Happy New Year.
This is the true definition of “standing in business “. Sad but true “the good always have to suffer with the bad. Starbucks is standing on business and people who is abusing the establishment need to be approached in that manner. Love your content and I totally agree with your view on this subject matter.
Happy New Year, babes. Thanks so much for watching. I don't blame Starbucks one bit. You should see the folks on TikTok who are angry..saying they are gonna boycott Starbucks? Who cares??! You weren't paying them anyway, you were mooching. People are hilarious.
100% agree!
Staff also has to clean up after them
That's the crazy part!!!
In our country the Starbucks bathroom has an electronic lock and the code is on your receipt. Also most folks inside do order something.
If it were not for this video, I would not have known. You’re right: Starbucks needs to market this change 💯😄
You are so welcome! Glad you found it helpful! 😎
At one point I worked for a grocery store in a west coast city and had to clean the public restrooms. I saw things that if I came home and saw it in my bathroom I would have just moved out on the spot.
Most business in my area have the bathrooms locked, you have to ask the cashier for the key.
That really suck, like a lot, that a few people can ruin a good thing.
Been here, staying here. Love ya gyal!

I have only been to Starbucks once, when I had to wait in airport for many hours. I ordered several hot white chocolate drinks and used their wifi.
I worked at a starbucks and the way these people would abuse tf out of asking for water cups drove me nuts! It got to a point where people started asking for cups of toppings since we technically can't charge them for that in the system. It was so bad....glad I got out of there!
Oh man...I can't even imagine! I don't blame you!
I totally agree with Starbucks on this one. I've been and seen the nasty bathrooms and folks lingering there plugged in WIFI and no drinks there or anything.
I guess Starbucks learned the old adage: No good deed goes unpunished.
I sometimes go to a local Subway and EVERY TIME there is a homeless guy sitting at the last booth. He lives there. Kids that work there CANT DO ANYTHING.
They are right to do that. Why you should leave someone to stay without to order!
Starbucks needs a sign that says "Restrooms for paying customers ONLY."
Appreciate your views so happy your channel was suggested to me a few months back
Thank you sooooo much. That is one of the sweetest things anyone could say to me. Thanks for your support! 🥰🥰😘
Even McDonald's has a 15 minute time limit for sitting in their dining area... Get it together Starbucks
WTF ❓
Not in Rural Georgia, you buy breakfast 🍳 for example, you can stay as long as you wish.

That’s crazy, 15 minutes ?
No
Never seen that applied at ANY McDs around here, or in the last city I lived in.
@@Brave_New_Trump_World most of these companies don’t enforce these rules on the customer. You’re more likely going to turn the customers off.
Thank you! I completely agree.
Using the bathroom at a private business is a privilege. Blame the people who abuse that privilege.
I’m all for this! Kudos Starbucks, heaven forbid people actually go to a BUSINESS and put in rules to those who don’t want to actually purchase something in said business. Whether big or small mom and pop.
I used to visit a Starbucks where I worked and there was always this same group taking up most of the seats from 7 until about 4pm. They never moved.
I needed a good rant to start my day, thanks and I agree with everything you said.
Im a ssv at Starbucks and I cannot wait for the bathroom codes. After the heinous stuff I've cleaned out of the bathroom...I can't wait. Simply can't.
My Starbucks got them a year or so ago. They are much cleaner now.
It is perfectly within their legal right to say "paying customers only". The example you mention is not applicable, legally.
As a frequent visitor to the USA I gotta say finding a public toilet is RIDICULOUS.
I'm sure you can find a toilet, you just have to buy something.
There isn't enough public toilets here in USA
This does not surprise me. Public toilets are a service and the US is all about making a profit. Looks like y’all up there gotta enter a bizness if ya wanna do ya bizness😟 “Hey, I’m busting… quick, gimme a dollar for a McDonald’s soft serve!”🍦💩
I'm in agreement. I consider it part of the service for being a customer.
I'm hoping Starbucks will bring back the music for the stores. I'd get my coffee, listen to artists i wasn't familiar with, and enjoy the experience. 😊
McDonald’s should be the number one company that should put this to play.
If it's too hot and I want to stay at a cafe all day, I'll buy a drink and snack every few hours. It's a shame that common courtesy aren't so common.
Gotta pay for that
I agree with Starbucks. Buy something or leave.
Damnnnnnnnnnnnn yuuuuuuuuck. You could write a book.
yay. boundaries are a thing again. seeing this concept popping up literally everywhere now. while discrimination has no place anywhere, everything is not for everyone.
NYC has been doing this for as long as I can remember.
The boycott made them nervous. 🤣🤣
Starbucks in my area are being made into drive thru's only.

Woooooooow. I think this played a major role in that decision.
This is absolutely fair. I was recently in Vancouver, BC and there no restrooms for anyon, not even customers because of issues you mentioned eaelier.

A lot of restaurants have been doing this or have a limit time for how long you can eat in
It’s a business.
We love your channel! I agree with your opinion on this. I stopped going to Starbucks because I was no longer comfortable there for many of the reasons that you mentioned.
Awwwwwwww🥰🥰🥰🥰 Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
Great video as always, keep up the great work and take care 🦋
