So, what Lapis did was, essentially, changing the file extension from mp4 to mp3 and sent it in a way only mp3 files can be sent, hoping someone will turn it back into an mp4... And it worked...
15:45 - Garnet's "Future Vision" doesn't technically "see into the future". It doesn't show her what _will_ happen, it shows all the possibilities that _can_ happen and how probable each possibility is. So she can see "If we do this, then A will most likely happen, and we can respond with B which will lead to C; but X could happen instead, which we should respond with Y to cause Z," and so on. Unfortunately they don't know anything about what Peridot or Homeworld is capable of or what's coming to Earth, so Garnet can't predict what's going to happen; the present information they have just isn't enough to predict anything at all.
when Lion slips up and talks, and realize Lion was a prototype of Steven Rose made, but she realized she can't get ir right unless she sacrifices herself, so sad.
I always describe garnet's future vision as like a super advanced predictive algorithm. in familiar situations and the very immediate future she's very accurate, but the more information she's missing and the further in the future she looks, the less she can see. in a situation like this where she has no idea whatsoever what's coming, her future vision has little use
That's an excellent description. I would also add that she uses personal judgement in deciding her response to the possible scenarios. If she sees three possible outcomes she uses her own knowledge and experience to decide which is most likely, and she responds accordingly. However, if she misjudges the likelihood then her response can be very wrong. This was shown when she first told Steven about future vision. She saw the possibilty that it would make him paranoid, and she told him anyway because she thought the possibility that he would take it well was more likely.
they are much less fun when you realize in season 4 when you realize he is not joking and his powers connecting him to every machine on earth puts him in a permanent coma he never comes out of even at the end of the series
"weapons of mass destruction are pretty terrible, i don't think they'll introduce them into a kids' show" just you wait until the episode where Peridot builds a hydrogen bomb out of stuff she found in Greg's barn in order to destroy Beach City
Mayor Dewey actually ends up being more relevant. Jamie, the town's mailman, is an immortal being and the great-grandfather of Mayor Dewey, linked to Rose, his long-lost best friend. His hidden past could change everything
Damn, the reveal that Steven is a robot (whose brain is the internet) (and also that he knows all continuity mistakes made on television) didn't surprise her that much. I thought it was mindblowing when I watched this for the first time. That's a bigger reveal than the finale!
audiophile here. a flanger is a type of musical effect that distorts audio by playing a slightly out of tune duplication of the original signal. this creates a sort of "swooshing" noise due to the different pitches clashing together. in fact, all the effects that Greg runs the sound from the wailing stone through are designed to further distort the audio in some way, which i find kinda funny
YEAH LOL it makes me giggle every time, I remember the first time I watched this I was like "....Greg baby you're just talking big, wtf is a flanger gonna do for you here lmao"
this is one of those rare moments in SU where it becomes pretty clear WHAT is about to happen, but we're just not sure what the OUTCOME of that will be. I love that 'Political Power' leans into that feeling, NONE of them know what's going to happen, not even Garnet, due to her future vision being possibly blacked out by [REDACTED], and in real life, it can be hard to know what to say to each other in the leadup to a possibly dire situation, or how to explain the situation to younger family members. the show's answer seems to be, "be honest, without giving into despair, and lean on each other." I think that's an important message to receive, especially now of all times. ...I don't have a fake spoiler in me, today. see you on the other side of the S1 Finale
14:41 Mosco, one thing I’ve learned from this show is to never tell Onion to calm down. The only people who can calm him down are his mom who dies in s2, Steven, and a Marry Popins ripoff. Onion is actually the villain of s3 and he is secretly the highest ranking gem, and when his mom died he was told to calm down because he almost destroyed the town, then he got in his villain arc

We finally got the first Mayor Dewey and Pearl's interaction. Man, their love story is one of the best of the show. Their future date at a play will be legendary. Pearl won't be able to sit throught it all because of the nervousness and excitement.
Unfortunately it went crashing down when Shrek kidnaps Pearl to save his brother Hulk from Michael Jackson in his sandcastle to become the next hokage on the moon.
I can't wait till we get to the time jump where Connie is running for president, with her boyfriend Steven supporting her. The callbacks to this episode are hilarious.
Peridot is the scientist of the "Earth project" her comanding officer is called Topaz and they have rhe raw physical strength to just shatter a gem with their bare hands
12:40 To explain the putting their faces on things in America. A large part of it is kind of an introduction so people know who they are talking to. One of the big ones is with real estate agents. When you call them, you picture them in your mind, and when you meet them at the house you're looking at, you know them by sight. That makes the buyer feel more comfortable and possibly more likely to buy from them.
I often think of Garnet's future vision as like a Grand Master in chess being able to see like 20 moves ahead. Given how long they've been away from Homeworld, Garnet probably doesn't have enough information to make any accurate predictions. It would be like guessing what the Earth is going to look like 1000s of years from now.
the flanger is what gave the message that whiny sort of "whale but without the low sounds"ish woooaaaaauuuhhgwwwwwoooaaaauuugghhhw sound and thats, basically what they do lol
lmao I love that cultural context about putting faces on posters and stuff. Where I am, there's all these billboards of a very douchy looking lawyer who looks suspiciously like some family movie villain. Somebody even went around town graffitiing them with defamatory statements and devil horns, so the description seems accurate.
If you’re wondering why they made such a big deal about the voice change thing, notice Steven’s ending line: “My mind is the internet. I know every continuity mistake ever made on television.” If you take each episode of Steven Universe that has a continuity mistake (in release order, because Steven specifies “on television”) and find the average, that is, the episode in the middle of them, you will find… that you have wasted your time :)
Spoilers: Pearl has villain arc. She discovers all the Pearls on homeworld are a seriously abused servant class and can’t let this sit. She changes her spear into a scythe with some tech modifications and uses it to poof the Pearls, which erases their servant programming thanks to the mods, and she rallies them into an army. She turns on the Crystal Gems when they disapprove of her methods getting too extreme. She comes back! But she’s so wracked with guilt she stays inside her gem for a whole season.
My favourite episode was from that arc. The one where she fights Steven. Her face being obscured by shadows and then she starts singing "It's over, Steven, it's over."
Fun little fact about Mayor Dewey, he's named after Dewey Beach in Delaware, one of the premiere beaches in the Delaware/Maryland area of the U.S. that inspired Beach City. Rebecca Sugar grew up in Maryland, so she most likely visited Dewey, Rehoboth and Ocean City at some point. I've vacationed at Ocean City several times.
Garnet can see multiple futures, but, like she explained, the futures she sees are all about the choices one does. Like when she gave Steven her power and he could see all the possible outcomes of his decisions. However, her future vision's wide range can be somewhat of a drawback. But don't worry, the flaw on Garnet's future vision will be eplained eventually.
Garnet's "future vision" seems to work similar to doctor strange from the marvel universe. So she doesn't necessarily see exactly what will happen but the possibilities of a problem and various solutions. So she can see who is coming and what they will do but its how to stop them that is complicated because there are many ways that the confrontation can go wrong.
*Groan* Please don't remind me of _that._ I _hated_ when they pulled that out of nowhere in the last season just so they could pair Pearl up with Lapis 🙄
2:50 in defense of lapis she probably didn't know, you have to keep in mind not alot of gems have seen or interacted with humans before, so they obviously wouldn't know that humans would have bones/be capable of breaking their bones or even hurting their body in the way gems do
i love how political power was written/directed it's so smart and so effective. you've got the silly a plot with steven who doesn't really grasp what's going on, and then the b plot with the gems that's extremely serious and tense, and the way the two plots intertwine and parallel each other. The adults trying so hard to tiptoe around the situation, to not burden and stress out steven, because he's still just a kid. LITERAL ALIENS coming to your planet, armed, is a lot of responsibility to drop onto a tween. even if he has powers.
Spoiler: After Peridot's group fails to return, Homeworld will send a team of investigators to find out what happened. When they fail to return, Homeworld will send physically powerful gems after the first group. When they fail to return, Homeworld will send a string of mercenaries from different alien races after them but they will send the lowest bidder.
Im finally caught up to your reactions on youtube! Cant wait to see the rest of the season. Im loving how much you theorize and think about each piece of the episodes.
Garnet can only predict something as far as it's a bit predictable, and that she tries to. Everything too out of the blue or out of her imagination is hard to predict. At least that's how I understand it.
I'm pretty sure this is the RIGHT episode order. I watched the show when it was still airing (caught up in season 3) and the order you're watching them in is the same order I watched them in. In fact, it was the _only_ order back then. It wasn't until years later that a new messed up order came out. If you watch older reactions to Steven Universe, they'll all be in this (correct) order. But if you watch more recent ones, from within the last couple of years, almost everybody will be messing up the order, thanks to streaming services having the order wrong. I watched the show, and many reaction series, about 8 years ago. Season 1 always ended with The Message, Political Power, The Return, and Jailbreak, in that order. And Say Uncle was never in season 1, it was season 2 episode 2, after Full Disclosure. I don't know who messed up the order, or when, but you've got the order we all watched it in back then.
It's not just streaming services - the episodes originally aired out-of-order. Not dramatically, but a few season 1 episodes aired during season 2 (you could tell because one character uses a season 1 design instead of a season 2 design; as far as I recall, there were no major plot holes besides that.) Mosco is watching in the intended order.
Mayor Dewey becomes a janitor in a red jumpsuit at a mad scientist's business, but his boss ends up hating him so they launch him into space. He ends up making 2 robot friends named Crow and Tom Servo, where the Mad Scientist tries to drive him insane by making him watch bad movies.
Just in case you didn’t see this on the community post. Since you’re done with S1 in real time there’s a little something you could check out. It’s a 3 minute short called _Steven writes “We Are the Crystal Gems”_
I think it’s harder for Garnet to see the future the further away she looks, because the future just keeps branching more and more until it’s unintelligible. I think. 👍
So, what Lapis did was, essentially, changing the file extension from mp4 to mp3 and sent it in a way only mp3 files can be sent, hoping someone will turn it back into an mp4... And it worked...
Thank you for this
There's this feeling of impending dread when the Gems admit to Steven that they're scared about what's coming.
And that’s because that they are barely scared from everything we seen before
15:45 - Garnet's "Future Vision" doesn't technically "see into the future". It doesn't show her what _will_ happen, it shows all the possibilities that _can_ happen and how probable each possibility is. She's the one lion was supposed to protect.
when Lion slips up and talks, and realize Lion was a prototype of Steven Rose made, but she realized she can't get ir right unless she sacrifices herself, so sad.

That was the biggest plottwist man I cried for days. What were they thinking showing this to kids my grown ass was stunned sobbing
"The hot one."
Poor sucker never stood a chance but that line makes me laugh every time.

I got that reference! ☝️😃

@lasseehrenreich5502 The "Fake Spoilers" are pointless in the replies to comments.
@troytab6089 it's just for fun, my guy
@lasseehrenreich5502 that was the worst way for the show to end, will never forgive Rebecca for that…
Amethyst was _100%_ talking about hotwiring cars.
"weapons of mass destruction are pretty terrible, i don't think they'll introduce them into a kids' show"
just you wait until the episode where Peridot builds a hydrogen bomb out of stuff she found in Greg's barn in order to destroy Beach City
Yeah, things get out of hand real fast.
this one is true
I raised eyebrow in "Adventure Time".
haha yea
Mayor Dewey actually ends up being more relevant. Jamie, the town's mailman, is an immortal being and the great-grandfather of Mayor Dewey, linked to Rose, his long-lost best friend. His hidden past could change everything
I loved the part when steven collected the 7 emerald shards to become super steven to save the gems from the evil egg guy
Bro sonic
SPOILERS
And when he meets dark Steven the edgelord
Sorry, I think you got the wrong show, I think that's from...oh, what's it called Dragon Ball?
Love to see a cartoon subtly demonstrating that a sufficiently large crowd of civilians can flip over a government vehicle
And like it's just 12 people at the very least XD

“Pearl is pretty impressive” i love love love that you see how much pearl is and does. She is quite good at many things ✨😌
"It's not lying when it's the Mayor." Is this a call out to Richrd Nixon? "It's not illegal when the President does it."

Comic relief is ESSENTIAL to drama

I love this show so much
Yes more Steven Universe and Happy New Year Mosco! 💖🥳🎉✨🌟🌠🎆
Just swinging by from the Patreon (great bang for your buck, btw!) to give a thumbs up, a watch, and this comment for the algorithm!

Just wait until the episode where we learn about Peridot's alter ego, Perry the Platypus!
The way I'm so excited for Mosco to see more Steven Universe!!! I am so excited and on the moon😁😁

Poor lapis 😥 she has my luck
