    ‏In my country, Iran, 45 years ago, all university students could go to university without paying tuition fees, and they even received a scholarship every month.
    ‏High-ranking students went to foreign universities with government grants. they did not need donation to cover their expenses
    and returned to Iran after completing their studies and were given important jobs.
    ‏But now even elementary school students have to pay a lot of money to study 45 years ago, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi was the king of Iran

    I wonder if the irony of this is lost on people, that her charity is a manifestation of the dysfunciton of Americal culture and public policy. Access to education in the USA, a means to better society and it's members, is often accomplished or increased though the uncertain whims and selectivity of charity rather than public policy. In most other developed countries, higher education is largely paid by government through taxes, for the benefit of all or most. The same can be said of health care. And when it comes to diginified retirement in the USA, it is at the whims of an employer and or stockmarket.
    This is no different than tipping. Underpay employees so that their incomes are subsidized by the whims of customers' tips.

    That's the kind of philanthropy we need to see from many more of the obscenely rich. They can surely afford to give back a little to the country that has enabled them to skim the cream and more than their fair share off our capitalist economy. We will need many, many more doctors as old folks like me begin to need more medical care.

    • @granitfog
      @granitfog 10 месяцев назад +3

      We don't need philanthropy, we need public policies that prioritize education and the public financing of it through taxes. Philanthropy is descriminatory and whimsical as it was in this case. Descrimination and whimsy is not a way to run a country. I know this is pie-in-the-sky wishing, but so is philanthropy.

    • @lvjb
      @lvjb 8 месяцев назад

      I know this was a rhetorical question, but you prompted me to look into it. As of a few years ago, $49.4 billion for Harvard and $36.5 billion for Stanford.
      Working with very rough enrollment and undergrad tuition numbers for Harvard, they could cover all students for a couple billion a year, forever. A fraction of the profits and interest they gain each year.

    • @johnmayerislovee
      @johnmayerislovee 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@lvjb Thanks for your reply. Even if the endowments of Harvard were placed into a 100% secure US backed bond, the interest alone would cover the tuition of each and every student currently attending Harvard.

      @kanishkchaturvedi1745 10 месяцев назад

      No tax benefits will outweigh the 1 billion dollars she gave away and that money is literally going towards tuition. They are going as far as to reimburse the students. There's little to no avenues for corruption.

    • @halwaffles
      @halwaffles 10 месяцев назад

      I mean, as someone who is learning about tax accounting, I think the most you can get is a charitable contribution deduction if you itemize your deductions. That said, it depends on certain factors, such as if the school qualifies as an institution where you can deduct donations as charitable contributions. Even then, there is a limit to how much you can deduct so I know that the donor will not be able to deduct the entirety whatsoever. The remaining not deducted can be carried forward to future years to be deducted but there’s only so many years you can carry forward excess charitable contributions. That is all to say, I think the only tax benefit to the donor is that they can deduct a portion of it on their tax return. As for the college, I have no idea.
      Granted, this is just coming from a student who is studying tax accounting and is not someone who is out in practice yet. You’d find a more informed answer from a professional.
