Brockman said it REALLY LOUDLY and REALLY OFTEN: Daniel Jones WAS NOT and IS NOT ever the Guy.
Daniel is only going to be on this team 1 more year. Idk why people keep calling his contract long term. It's not
Well, the Giants went ahead and followed the trend at the time, which was dont give RBs long term contracts because too much tread on the tires etc. No RB were getting paid at the time.
"At the time" was JUST last year. They paid a scrub and left their best offensive player justifiably disgruntled. Good Job, Giant...
Too bad that time is both now and then and in fact was even in play when they drafted saquon…
And still shouldn't be getting paid at 27 after multiple injuries in his career while not having a good run game as a team despite him being there. Take the resources that would be used in paying him and put them into what actually makes a run game with a WR1 and run blocking. Runningbacks aren't hard to find young and cheap while being solid players.
I don't think there was anyone outside of the Giants front office that thought that signing Daniel Jones to that contract was a good idea. At the time there was a pretty much universal agreement that the Giants were being idiots.
Then why do it?
This is revisionist history. Many Giant fans were happy with the deal bc you have to lock down a QB above all
@@peteg2715no they weren't. The Daniel Jones cult were happy but many didn't like the deal.
@@peteg2715maybe? But I don’t remember too many people being happy about that. It’s not revisionist history. Just because maybe a FEW Giants fans were, I def remember more who weren’t happy at ALL.
Most “fans” didn’t understand the money situation they were up against but EVERYONE wanted a QB. Trade for a veteran with a high cap hit? Only reasonable option would have been Baker but no fans wanted Baker over Jones regardless of money. Looking at it I’m sure they’d say they ALL wanted him lol really people don’t talk about how they chose Jones and Barkley over Feliciano and Love both of which played big roles in their successful season. If the cap grew the way it did this year, we would be having a different conversation. Here’s the flip side… they tag Jones and sign Barkley to CMC money. Jones improves on his playoff season slightly but wins a playoff game again, saquon has a good year but not CMC money… now you’re either tagging Jones for a second time or signing him to a bigger deal without a team option and the conversation is now “why did they give a RB whose had injuries a big contract when they know the RB market is low how dumb” not saying I feel this way but playing devils advocate a bit!
rich eisen you dont overpay for a running back.
As a Giants fan I personally wasn't fooled by that playoff win I still never thought Jones was the guy in his second year way before they paid him and I knew it was a huge mistake to give him that deal
I definitely got fooled by it
@msprouctions8175 u didn't get fooled...u reacted to a good season....Dj haters was drinking the kool-aid too...but all these haters have turned on him..not the rest of the team which is mind blowing...the team underperformed as a whole.
@@The24hrMessenger DJ is not a good qb
The Giants tried to pay Saquon during the bye week in 2022. Which is before they paid Jones.
He really got paid based on that 1 playoff game against a terrible Vikings defense.
The 2 Vikings games and the game against the colts is what got him that contract.
Donatell got him paid
The money aspect is huge and everyone disregards that. What the cap hit was on the franchise tag (32m) vs the 20m cap hit they were able to finesse on his extension is the main reason. You get Saquon and Jones for the cost of Jones on the franchise… then when the money goes up this year (30+M) you can extend Saquon in Jones’ last year (they built in an out after year 2. (Tag Xavier, resign when Jones contract is off the books next year and you have a 2nd year QB on a rookie deal.
I think most of us thought that immediately after the signing
Agreed, obvious as sun rising in the east
I think this was the plan but I think that plan went pear shaped when Barkley turned down the Giants' offers. Supposedly Barkley was offered 3 years with approx $23 million guaranteed. There's no reason - other than Barkley getting horrendous advice - that it should have gone this way. Even with a fairly clean escape after this season on Jones, they still paid him way too much.
Bullshit
@@ValyrianPrince So you don’t think Jones is overpaid? Interesting.
When will anyone get this straight we offered Saquon a bag and he said no, yet somehow that’s the Giants fault.
These organizations be fooling yall into believing that just because they offered someone a deal, that means it was a good deal.
how about they gave Jones 40$ mil, and he sucks a bag LOL as a eagles fan, im thrilled
@@ekoboyz757 You guys gave Hurts 60 mil.. and he's a one year wonder so far, looked awful down the stretch last yr
@peteg2715 Jones isn't even a one year wonder. He had a whole 22 TDs and you guys damn near paid him 2 mil per TD. Based on the Giants math Hurts should have gotten closer to 70 mil a year.
@@keenannash2947 TDs aren't everything, they were on different offenses & Hurts surrounded by way more talent. Jones was super efficient, lowest int%, top 5 completion%, & was responsible for like 70% of the total offensive yards. It was just him & Saquon on offense. Hurts got SIXTY million..that's top of the league money. That contract also going to age like milk.
Do they take Jayden Daniels if he is available at #6?
They tried to get a deal with Saquon, a good deal. He wouldn’t sign.
I love Saquon, but he is not what he was.
RB is a luxury, and the GIANTS need core guys.
Saquon is hurt all the time. Build the team correctly. Build the trenches, keep adding players.
Get a RB in the draft. You don’t have to put big money into the RB.
Best move was not to pay both
Saquan Barkely is NOT Christian McCaffrey. Not even close.
ONE HUNDRED PERCENT RICH! Nailed it
Before the ACL injury Saquon was the best RB in football. Unfortunately coming back from that injury he’s played behind the worst line in the league every year. He’s still explosive. If Barkley came into the league running behind a good line his numbers would’ve been untouchable over these past 5-6 years.
Rich, I love the way you second guess every team, except your much beloved jets.. maybe the giants made a mistake... but so did the jets signing Rodgers.
I wonder 🤔💭 which BEARD Rodgers will be sportin' THIS year 😉😉 .
i love a reporter that reports what he sees. complete opposite of carlton
They shouldn't have paid either. Think Saquon is close to McCaffrey is crazy talk.
Paid him for what exactly? We’ve been a perennial loser with him, he’s had 1 fully healthy season. Please stop.
You gotta understand despite what some people are thinking the locker room was also very in favor of Jones getting paid, but don’t forget the Giants tried negotiating with Barkley first and he didn’t except the extension - they weren’t even negotiating with Jones before the in season extension deadline
jones not being the guy doesn't make paying saquon long-term a good idea. even if you assume he stays at his peak through the whole extension (unlikely), a star running back isn't nearly enough to make that giants team not stink.
As much as people were saying “pay jones” or “don’t pay jones” all we ever heard from fans or the media was “you definitely don’t pay Barkley”
Moral of the story is there is no one size fits all for QB or RB contracts. Forget who sets the market find some nuance
They shouldn't have even Drafted Jones let alone Pay Him to Stay...
Last year they should've tagged Jones, and if the deal with Saquon didn't work, let him walk. That was my opinion then and it is still the same today.
I mean, Christian McCaffery is an every type of runner, down-hill, shifty, outside. Barkley is primarily and outside or shifty. He won't get you the 3-4 yards up front that are needed. Also, INJURIES. Giants should have paid 3 yr 36 mil for Saquon after the first season and tagged Jones. But I mean, come on, to say Saquon deserves McCaffrey money is absurd in my mind with the pieces he has around him.
At the time, they (the Giants) made a good investment with Jones. Barkley has been great but he is a running back. Rich can agree with the statement that running backs typically have a short life span. I hope.
I’m a giants fan.
DJ is a backup at best.
No sense of paying Barkley when they got no O-line
It would be a waste to pay him with that O-line
They should have tagged jones. Saquon is the man and deserved a pay day.
Should never pay a RB so they started down the right path
Giants TRIED to pay Saquon before Jones. He declined the offer. He should’ve taken the deal when he had the chance and Jones would’ve gotten the tag.
Monday morning quarterbacking at it's finest
Daniel Jones is Ed Donatell’s biggest fan 😂
They tried to pay Saquon…they offered him a deal last year that he turned down & McCaffery is better than Barkley it’s not that hard of a concept to grasp
It is when you’re the giants and the entire country other than you sees he’s the only good player they have
Has he finished a full season since he was drafted?
I hate to say it but I remember Chris saying this I think before the season and yes he was right. But so is a broken clock twice a day
I’m a Vikings fan. People
Need to recognize Daniel Jones did that against one of the worst Viking defenses I have personally ever been forced to watch. Donatells defense was HORRIBLE. Our offense dragged that mess to the playoffs. 400+ yards and 31 points to THAT Giants offense was disgusting. But people blame Kirk Cousins. 🤦🏻♂️
Have a question lets say they did what you guys are saying they should have did. 23' looks the exact same... whos at fault then?
Invest in a running game not in a running back. If the giants are smart they will sign a guard instead of paying saquon and draft a running back with a mid round pick.
They wouldn’t be in the situation if they had just picked up Jones 5th year option
I am with Chris big time. I thought they sunk themselves with giving Jones the money.
I don’t understand it either rich
Mistake was made no need to cry over spilled milk. How are you going to fix it??? This is where Joe has to learn from his mistakes. Giants are developing a GM and there will be bumps but hopefully Joe can turn it around. Remember the late George Young took time to develop into a good GM. Lets go Giants.
Look at 2023 stats for SB
He’s no CM
DJ is paid like a middle of the road QB and what is he ?
A middle of the road QB with this o line. Rich…
Your opinion is just an opinion… thats it….
Nothing solid but pure entertainment
But I love your show lol
It’s not long term. There’s an out after this season. And what would have paying Barkley done? The team is not in a good cap situation and can’t afford giving him mccafrey money. The 49ers can because their quarterback makes 800k.
The Giants could give him a Cmac deal, their cap situation is fine. But they didn't & won't bc that would be a dumb move
RB’s are a dime a dozen.
QB’s with playoff wins are pretty rare.
That being said, I wouldn’t have paid Jones.
Tbh, Barkley should've taken the offer from the Giants in the previous year. Had he done that the giants would've known what they could've given jones.
I love you Rich. Stop saying long term. This is DJs last guaranteed year and tou know that's all that matters. Has anyone actually looked at his contract? It's extremely team friendly.
Making one bad decision (giving DJ a big contract) doesn’t justify making another bad decision (giving a huge long term contract to an aging RB).
It sucks for them and it may be fair, but a 27 year old RB who has played 6 seasons in the NFL is on the precipice of falling off a cliff. It almost always happens at age 28…
CMC is the rare exception, and his “late career” success is because of the org he plays for… he’d be nearing retirement as well if he was still in Carolina.
Rich, and a lot of fans, get way too emotional about these things… giving a 27 year old RB a long term contract is almost never going to work out…
Here’s my issue with the RB logic: they base it on what every other back has done, instead of looking at what THEIR guy has done. The 49ers were smart. You’re the Giants, he’s your best player, if you don’t have a real contingency plan you can’t just not pay him. I’d been okay with not signing Barkley, but you don’t give Jones that kind of money and use “but don’t pay RBs” as an excuse for it
And I’m saying this as a cowboys fan. I’ve watched Dallas have many “ hey we can give up this dude and use a committee of players” moments, just for it to fail. Y’all will bring up how paying RBs is bad, but won’t talk about how many teams have fell flat not paying their good RB…and never replacing that production at all.
Its not rocket science giants media and fans. if you fail to draft a clear number 1 wr you lose with barkley the most talented player. Your RB cannot be your most talented player. Every average to good qb has a #1 te or wr #1 except the giants.😂
Cj in a bad division is an outliner.
I think Saquon isn't worth McCaffery money because he's not quite as good. Maybe that's just me though.
Trade both of them in go get your guy in this years draft
Should have paid neither
He had two good years in 5 but he balled out? Wtf lol
i thought i was the only one thinking this. SMH
Rich how many times do people have to tell you the giants tried to pay Barkley first and pay him a lot of money and he still refused multiple offers from the giants before you get it…. Also the giants can get out of the Jones contract after this year so why are you still being obtuse?
They still have an out. Jones only guaranteed one more yr
Daniel Jones is who he is at this point. The biggest problem for giants is their Oline until thats fixed nothing good will come from em
you dont pay RBs. we all know that. Look at the Chiefs
I clicked the like button as soon as I saw the title without even letting the ads finish first😂
As a Giants fan I was all for Daniel Jones getting paid with what he had to work with in 2022 I thought he was pretty good and I’ll never forget or take away that playoff game he was fantastic against the Vikings but yea if we could go back and pay Saquon or even let him walk if we couldn’t work a contract out we still should’ve tagged Jones we are in a mess right now Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen may get fired after 2024 if things go poorly again and even though we can move on from Jones after the 2024 season we’re still gonna have to deal with a cap hit from that so we’ll see maybe the Giants can be relevant again one day
He doesn’t make Christian money because he is no where near as good. What does the media not get? They were the ones saying that they had to pay Daniel.
After this season, Jones can be cut.
Barkley and Henry being a free agent is outrageous I can only imagine their next teams fr giants got problems fr 😂
THE GIANTS PAID DANILES 40 MILLION DOLLARS LAST YEAR AND GOT 2 MILLION DILLAR ANYEAR PRODUCTION AND YET THEY STILL WOMT PAY SAQUAN BARKLEY 12 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR
I BET IFNHE WAS WITH HIS PRODUCTION THEY WOULD HAVE PAID HIM
Shouldve tagged Jones and let barkley walk. Barkley wasnt even that great this year
U guys would have killed the Giants right now if they paid Barkley 16 Mil missing all that time this year & decreased production.
One thing I'm noticing: the bulk of the success of teams in the NFL are based on actions taken by the front offices. The decision to trade up for Mahomes, the decision to franchise-tag or overpay a player, the decision to break the bank on a star who underdelivers - the better the scouting the better the end result. And many of the teams like the Giants currently in hell have their own management to blame
I don’t understand the narrative that the Giants chose DJ over Barkley…quite the opposite. They tried to pay Barkley 1st, they offered him $ to be a top 5 RB in the league and Barkley said no bc he wanted Mccafrey $, so the Giants tagged him bc that’s all they could do and signed Jones who just came off his best season ever (1st under Daboll) to a 4 year mid QB $ deal(taking into account the expanding salary cap) with an out after year 2. Wtf else are they supposed to do, they were picking mid 20’s in the draft and ppl were wondering did Daboll bring the best out of DJ at the time. You can’t tag jones bc then they would have no cap space to sign other players like Okereke etc. you need to be able to move the $ around. They tried to get a long term deal done w Barkley twice and he didn’t want to take the very fair offers on the table. It’s easy to play armchair GM after seeing how the 2023 season went but tbh they made the most logical moves at the time. Sometimes things just don’t work out and that is why the 2 year out was built into the contract.
You’re about 2 years late on this take Rich, literally everyone knew this
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
He turned down the 13 mill and also has been hurt and they have a billion other needs and are paying their QB through the end of this year and eating 33 mill of dead cap after this year with the 32nd ranked offensive line and a new DC. What makes you think that paying Saquon is going to do anything.
Why would you sign either? Daniel jones is trash and Barkley would get injured 2 games in. I rather have a running back that stays healthy. And try another qb
I hope he leaves and I am Giants Fan they treated him terribly just don't go to the Cowboys
If I hear this stupid headline one more time I’ll lose my mind!! I will say this a thousandth time! The Giants did pay Saquon, but he turned down the money mid season to take a gamble in the offseason. He was offered a very generous deal! He turned it down and messed himself up. It’s his fault now can we all please just STFU about this!? THANK YOU
no reason to sign danny dimes (worst nickname ever as he is terrible) simply a terribly ran front office, that said, why would you give a RB any money? C'mon rich wake up.
Saquon isn’t a top 5 back anymore. He’s 27 and has had 1 good year over the last 4…that’s why you don’t pay him
Idk why saqun would even want to play for the giants they suck I would be throwing a party because they didn't resign me
And now that Jim Harbaugh wants him for the bolts, it's a very real possibility.
Honestly that surprising playoff season in year 1 for daboll and schoen has been a curse. Instead of leaning into a full rebuild they seemed to think they’re obot a few pieces away. This year showed they could not have been more wrong. Tear it down. And if Schoen makes another pick like Evan Neal then show him the door.
U DONT PAY RUNNING BACKS.. stop being typical media nerd
McCaffery money for SB? Are you daft? He is a four yards a carry guy with an occasional explosive play. Can't stay on the field. Keep your day job...
I don't want to defend Daniel Jones and I'm not a Giants fan, but that was a HISTORICALLY bad offensive line, at least during the first half of the season in the few games I watched. No QB, not even Mahomes, could have done much under that much duress.
They can; just re-structure D.J's; he shouldn't be getting more then $35mil a yr. and pay Barkley $14mil/yr- 4yrs.
You do know that restructures means that you're going to be pushing money BACK right? He already has a 47 million dollar dead cap in 24 and a 22 million dead cap in 25. If the current regime wants to accelerate getting fired then by all means restructure the contract making the situation even worse.
Barkley was an average back last year, so not sure what you are talking about? There is no comparison to McCafrey?
Dude he has no line. Clear as day potential and skill set is there.
The giants will always be a disaster
No. Barkley is way way overrated. Yes look at all the clips and highlights you want of big plays. However the guy is always hurt and those big plays don’t happen on a consistent basis. He isn’t exactly a game changer or a constant threat.
and Jones at 40$ is good deal LOL
@@ekoboyz757 I didn’t say Jones was a good deal bc he isn’t. Unless you meant for $40.00, in which case yes that’s a good deal.
Yeah no line right
Jones is the most overrated QB in the league
And i hate to point things out that are sinister but how long did it take for this organization to start a black QB? What if they decided to nip that in the butt right away and now karma is pegging them instead?
Love the Giants imploding
Hmmm... young black man who showed up and showed out, gets screwed over; white kid at QB who fell upwards, looks "OK" for one or two games, signs for big money and then does nothing... in the NFL? What a surprise!
John Mara is a racist. Odell, Landon Collins and now saquan
Abso-fucking-lutely not. You don’t ever pay a running back, I don’t care who he is. Running backs don’t change the game for the team. You can get similar production out of a committee of 6th rounders.
They never should have even spent that draft pick on the running back. #2 overall for the only position on the field that can be eliminated from the game if you’re losing by multiple scores is insanity to me. And I’m right, because all of Barkley’s years on the Giants were their worst years ever. He obviously didn’t lift up the team around him like a great QB would.
Pete Carrol would agree with that. Who needs a RB to win a Super Bowl
