Jesse and I moved to Idaho to start our homestead a year and a half ago and I have to confess… I don’t actually enjoy the day-to-day life of homesteading. Not the homesteading most people think about… the homesteading that nobody talks about which is what building a house from scratch looks like. However, I continue to do these things anyways. Why? Find out in the video.

Far too many people are afraid of work, it's like it has become a 4 letter word. If the work for someone willing to give them a paycheck they will do it but if they do the same thing for themselves with just the satisfaction of not having to pay someone to do it they back away, I am proud to see that you 2 are willing to get your hands dirty and break a sweat to reach your goals.

I am retired (on disability) and so I have more time than most. I spend some of that time watching RUclips videos more than broadcast TV (and NO CABLE!) I have really enjoyed your videos and tracking your progress. It is a shame that others are trying to tell you how you should be doing what you are doing and how your way is all wrong! If they are so right and know so much, why aren't they doing it themselves? I love your honesty (both of you) and am cheering you on. If I was 20 years younger (and had a willing partner), I might give this a shot, too! Live YOUR dream!

    • @owenprince4823
      @owenprince4823 6 лет назад

A willing partner is the most difficult part of this. This Lady is awesome and not many would be willing to work this hard. Most of the woman I know say this is a mans job but if he said house work is womans work he would be called all kinds of names. They work together side by side and will get a lot done this way. The only thing I would add is that in the old time people would have the community get together to help each other out. It will go faster if you can get your local community to do a barn raising activity.

I think that far from detracting from your femininity, all of the experiences from the projects that are broadening your skills, growing your confidence and continue to help forge you into a more valuable human being, life partner and responsibility bearer on the homestead have enhanced your femininity, too !

I have no desire now, nor have I ever had, to participate in a protest. I have voted in every election since I was 18 and I write to my Congressional members (both state and federal) when the need arises. At my age one learns digression is the better part of valor! I am happy to see you have not given up. The idyllic life portrayed by off grid enthusiasts is pure fiction. Any means of being self supporting is going to be real work and that includes the 9 to 5 grind or any self sufficiency scheme. The real difference is between doing something that you want to do or doing something that you hate, at least I see it that way.
I never much cared for my life as a wage slave even when those wages were quite generous. Now I do what I like to do as a retired person and it makes my life more enjoyable than before. It is not so much that I have lots of time off but that what I am doing is something I choose to do. I have been researching alaskan mills, composting and other subjects that interest me rather than what I did working for someone else.
I am coming to a conclusion that a small farm may be in my future. I cannot eat many eggs due to dietary restrictions but egg production may be a path to get the chicken waste and resulting compost that I will need for my garden. That will force me to branch into egg production on a small scale just so I can do what I want with a garden. No problem for me because farm fresh eggs are always in demand at prices that will pay for the chicken feed. A simple craigs list ad for the eggs should mean that I have my choice of customers on a small scale operation.
I took to heart yesterday's rant on click bait but had no positive results. I signed up to be notified of your new posts but found this one by stumbling on it while doing a search for alaskan mill information. Yes, that makes no sense to me either.

When you build things like a deck or install drywall or sheathing you shouldn't line up your joints in one row. They should be staggered evenly. It provides much greater strength and rigidity. I noticed on the decking boards you have them lined up in a row.

You both inspire many, daily.....keep up the good work. I wish I would've done something like this when I was healthier and could've moved to the wilderness. Now my wilderness is long weekend camping trips, but I'll settle for that, I'm thankful to be above ground! So, keep teaching and learning, and I'll keep watching and learning with you both.

I'm sorry, but that doesn't look like homesteading AT ALL. It just looks like living a DIY lifestyle. I see a tremendous amount of very expensive air tools, heavy equipment, and electric power tools. I think most peoples' idea of homesteading is actually living without all of those things and needing to depend on the power company, the local equipment rental company, or other things that require you to have to be dependent on the outside world to obtain. There's no way that you guys can be just homesteading. You obviously have a more lucrative income or are more independently well off than I think most people are who have the idea of homesteading.

We bought acreage outside of Seattle (Poulsbo, WA) . After living in SoCal for most of my life, we couldn't see raising our kids there. While we are not homesteading, we are "roughing it" relative to what we had before and loving every minute with our kids.
Our 3 and 10 year old love it too. Instead of asking for material things and video games, the 10 year old wants to build and explore. That says it all.

Soo Nicely put -- someone that gets into homesteading for the things they like, ...will be challenged to get through all the unglamorous bits. It does take DEDICATION and COMMITMENT. It really comes through in the videos that you do a marvelous job at going for it and trying to learn and to do everything you can. Only a "Loser" would think that there is anything wrong with a person of the female persuasion growing their skills toward mutually reaching a worthy cause. When people, of either gender, put boundaries on what is their 'role' in terms of making a dream happen, then everyone suffers. Keep pushin' On Allysa !
We reached our 5 year anniversary of homesteading documented in the Our Story videos at Relentless Homesteading - and it really has taken relentlessness - one must keep at it, ...whether or not they feel like it at the time. I'm reminded of an old saying --- goes something like this: ...too many people have "wish bone", when they really need "back bone" to get the job done!!!

The thought of Homesteading had crossed my mind a time or 2, but when you are doing a job that makes you feel good, at the end of the day, it's hard to look into the woods for another life. I was a light crane operator building offshore oil rigs in New Orleans. Working 18 hrs a day, 7 days a week was normal. After a combination of being sprayed with Agent Orange for a year, working in several construction fields long hours & long weeks, several auto accidents, ya, my body is messed up too. The only regret I have at 68 yrs old is, not giving Homesteading a go, back when I was still young enough to enjoy it.

WHAT AN AMAZING VIDEO!!! It is scary following your heart and making such a big move but so well worth it. I gave up my corporate job and my home in the city to follow what I truly wanted ... happiness! I am now living in an old airstream and miss all the activities of having a home but the journey is part of the fun. Unlike you I love to build things and bet I can say the same for Jesse. Can't wait to see what you have have in store for 2017. I'm right there with you guys!!!
    Thanks

I literally teared up watching this video... I haven't binged watched a TV series as much as I have your channel.
You guys are an inspiration! I'm so proud of you going for it! Keep up the good work. I will be following you guys from now on.
BTW, I found you because we did a search for Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs)... and your video came up that showed you guys installing the forms and then pouring the concrete.
I've been addicted to your videos ever since.
I will be doing an auto-pay to help support your effort... But in addition to that, I wanted you to know that I compose music for TV shows and would like to offer some of it to you free of charge (no license fees - ever). Whether you choose to use it or not, just know that I love your effort and wish you the very best in whatever you guys choose to do.

Do you have a video that talks about that cash element? I see your videos and exploits and all I think is, "they're gonna be paying for that forever." How do you do it? We are making similar commitments to live a similar lifestyle and cash vs. debt is the biggest unknown. Thanks, really sweet video, not what I expected from the title.

I would like to ask, have you done a video on financing your homestead project? did you have a pretty good savings to start off with? because you had to spend a lot for things like your batteries, water tanks, renting machinery etc. Thank you and I love your videos!

I guess I could go back and see if I can find the answer but my biggest question is how did you afford to build a house, buy a piece of land, buy all the tools and machinery needed and building supplies! Seems like you had enough money to move to a beach Home in Cuba :)

We have to admit, you did pick one helluva snow ⛄️ ❄️ belt area to buy land in. We have a place here like so many in Western Montana that goes like this.
You leave LO LO Montana and drive up to the State line of Washington State. Once you get 7 and a half miles up the road that you have been slowly, but steadily climbing 🧗‍♀️ that really is unnoticeable, all of a sudden BAM!! You run head in long into a wall of snow.
Yet you can stop on this narrow 2 lane paved road and looooooook 👀 👀 back and see its snowing. One bit. That’s the snow belt line as us born and raised locals call it. From there back it will get snow. Sure. But!!! Nothing like inside the line and continuing to head up the road. Lol lol.
We know sooooooo many areas like this. Btw. We have met and come to know several young folks like you 2 in NW Montana and NW Idaho. Good folks that worked in the Portland Oregon and Seattle Area.
All had pretty dog gone high paying salary white collar jobs. Both did. But since both worked for a Company that the job / title demanded they put in 12 15 etc hour days, they didn’t have much time left over just for them to be alone in marriage.
We can’t say we blame them. We couldn’t. Known each other since Junior High:). Been together ever since. Lol 😆 🤣 But we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Alyssa, you've got it right -- together. I climber the ladder in a Fortune 25 company and did very well as we built a $23B company in the 80's. I got bored and retired at age 46 - for four months. My bride was right there with me. That lasted four months and we moved to Ohio to fix a multi $B multi-national foreign owned company. At the end of six years it was done and we moved the company to NC and I walked away - too humid, too hot and the company was fixed and poised to take off and grow. Mt bride was by my side. So I started a consulting firm; it failed but my bride was by my side. Paid the bills, kept the kids in college but no income. At 58, bought an interest in a company in MI, with my bride by my side. Our oldest daughter became critically ill and I "retired again" so we could care for her through four major brain surgeries and being home I restarted a consulting business - this time success! Our daughter survived and is now disabled but married and has a son. But in the interim someone asked me if I wanted to run a large medical practice; I know a lot about manufacturing but not healthcare. But what the heck, at age 61 I took it on which was good since our daughter is rightfully called our million $ baby. And the doctors were great! Explained what she would go through. But by age 72 I had survived three forms of aggressive cancer and it was time to retire - but not exactly. The point in this story is basic: Love is a verb, the CONTINUED direction of one's will toward the continued good of another. That is what I see in your videos and oh is it so good. God bless you on your journey together.

If it wasn't hard it would not be a worthwhile dream! And even if all the plumbing/electrical/machines/etc. are *not* your thing, that's all incredibly useful knowledge. As a little kid I followed my dad around as he fixed things, installed our new septic system, built stuff, repaired stuff, and all the rest that comes from living in the country. Even if we were not technically "homesteading".
And these days when things break I just fix them. I don't call some expensive dude who isn't as smart as me because he works for "appliance repair". Being a computer geek helps, of course. :)
So far I have a good 5 years on the gas stove I repaired, and this coming weekend my refrigerator is having semi-major servicing to extend its life and save me the $1000+ that a new one will cost.
So hang in there. The hard lessons are good ones. And as much as I don't want to be doing what you're doing (I hate snow, for one thing, and moved to Boulder to get away from it) it's lots of fun watching the videos. And I *am* getting some ideas for my non-homestead home. :)

thank you, really needed that, was on my new land this morning, 4 feet of snow up in the Quebec Laurentians, but cool the ground was not that frozen....for my soil test vs septic system, could have meant a 6 000,00$ difference on the choice of system...than the call for survey to tell him to modify home location vs septic system location, will have to redo all my home versus landscape / patio/ garden/ shed plans, etc....need to have all this done by friday march 10...leaving for California / Nevada for 3 weeks..and seeing that the project wont go foward if i am not here....etc...anyway, thanks so much guys...you, even far away, are helping me keeping my dream up....an running..sincerely, Jean-Marc
Bye the way, after a visit of the guy for the backhoe work at a 1000.00$ a day...i went and watch you video with the smaller excavator...yeap..i will have a great week of vacation playing with my Tonka rental...

If you are doing things that are less than ideal now in order to achieve your goals then those aren't sacrifices, they are trades. I am trading a comfy home right now for financial stability in the future. You seem to do the same. I know this "sacrifice vs trade" SOUNDS like a minor thing, but it really isn't. Many people are SACRIFICING their lives, time, money and family in order to have that McMansion with a 50in plasma TV and they don't even know they are doing it. Sacrifice means giving up something of value. Trading means exchanging for mutual benefit. Never sacrifice, and freedom follows.
This took forever to type on my tablet. But i gladly traded that time if even one person learns something from it.

I am in my own homesteading process (although I made a less radical change since I kept my regular job and visit my land on my vacations and I have put in a 500 sq ft new mobile home as my temporary housing), and my main formula for success (although I am only a year into the process) is:
    1) Patience - You did mention this in your video
    2) Courage and determination - I have seen both of you exhibit these traits
    3) Most of all, Flexibility - I went into this with a plan A, B, and C for what I wanted to ultimately do with this raw property. It is good to know what you want, but I think it is also better to be open to (and at least explore) all of the possibilities. I applaud you guys for recognizing your land as a resource for your family.
I just wish I had the courage you did to quit my city job and move out there like you guys did. How did you do it financially? I see you guys buying a lot of things and taking pilot lessons. We have no debt (not even our house or the land and trailer we bought), but I would expect to not be able to afford to build our retirement home myself without our 6-figure combined income. Either you have some secret income trick or you are the bravest people I know of.
    God bless!

Sadly, many of the 'homesteading' videos don't show the work involved, the mental and physical challenges..This is WHY historically 'farmers' have earned the reputation of being the 'workers' of our nation, the backbone, the foundation of our nation because people like yourself do what ever it takes to achieve their goals. "Down and dirty" is what our country was founded and built on. Congratulations for taking a part in that sustaining lifestyle.

  • @DaveSJS4ever

Homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. It is characterized by subsistence agriculture, home preservation of food, and it may or may not also involve the small scale production of textiles, clothing, and craftwork for household use or sale. Pursued in different ways around the world-and in different historical eras-homesteading is generally differentiated from rural village or commune living by isolation (either socially or physically) of the homestead. Use of the term in the United States dates back to the Homestead Act (1862) and before.

Your dream is very similar to mine!! The sacrifices I'm making right now are for a future of not being enslaved to a 9-5!! Stick with it!! When you have reached your goal you will be stronger, experienced, healthier both mentally and physically and you will live longer!! Your relationship will be stronger as well!! Unfortunately the relationship with my lady didn't even make it past the planning stage so I am going it alone. You really do learn alot about yourself and your capabilities when tackling such an endeavor. You guys will be forever happy!! I like your vids and the place looks great so far!!

This might just be my favourite "off-the-grid" video ever! I've been binging on your channel again today and stumbled across this wee gem. Alyssa, I'm so inspired by your attitude and ability to just get in their and get the work done. Both you and Jesse have the most positive attitude to challenges that crop up all the time and I love your ability to either come up with a work around or just commit to getting the work done. I'm gonna be stopping by A LOT in the next while as I plan my own off-grid home (probs a tiny home, tbh and I'm totes okay with that). Love it.

I think it's great that you both work so hard together. I wish that I could find a great woman like yourself, as a companion to build a semi-remote homestead with me on 18 acres with a nice lake in Alaska. I bought 18 acres 9 miles east of Lake Louise near Glennallen; from the State of Alaska in Aug 2016. I currently live on a lake in Louisiana near my family but I have a calling to go Alaskan. Any takers? :-)

As a steady viewer of your videos, I think you two completed several smaller goals during 2016. Building the hot tub is a good example of " Work vs Reward ". You did the work and were rewarded with being able to soak your aching muscles after a long day of work.
Can hardly wait to see what creative Click Bait video titles you dream up.

jessie you are a VERY lucky man :) im sure you know. good looking women are everywhere, but good looking women, who go balls out everyday with a smile is a rare wonderful thing :) i find myself impressed almost every video. i dont mean this in a sexist way, things just tend to be how they are. 100 years ago, everyone had to work HARD for life to go on. today, hard workers are hard to find in both sexes, but men are socially programmed to like the big heavy hard work, and not to complain too loudly about their ache's and pains, their busted backs and their cracked aching feet. i wish we could get back to more people universally, enjoying work, and doing for themselves instead of living in debt.

  • @1timby

Click Bait....Just kidding...lol. It's good to hear that there really is work involved. As some folks are portraying this as a leisurely lifestyle.
The old timers worked very hard to put a roof over their heads and food on the table. And felt privileged to have running water, plumbing, electricity, phone service, and even electricity. Folks forget how hard life use to be on the typical American homestead 100 years ago.

And, what a fine finish to 2017 it is ! In my adopted culture, women would only cook and do laundry. Every time we turn around, we are told, "This is not for woman". I am so amazed that you two have been able to do this and in less than one year. And, I sense that you are quite shy, so much of this is outside your comfort zone. I feel compassion for your blood, sweat, and yes, tears. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, or Eid Mubarak to you all.
