I forgot to say at the end . . .to make these dresses nursing friendly, when I am about due I will open up the sideseams under the arms and add 6 in. invisible zippers to the dresses. I didn't want to do that now because I wanted to see if the dresses would even work. . . and also I'm a little rusty on installing invisible zippers so I'm saving that for another day!

I do a lot of charity quilts now. You are very talented and creative adapting your patterns. I enjoy your channel and all the things you do. Congratulations on the new baby. That black/navy floral fabric is called a "French Terry" type fabric. I really like those for joggers or hoodies. 😊
And your dress you did for pictures, it may have been that the fabric was too thick and didn't have a great drape to it, so it stuck out more than the brushed polyester or the French Terry.
French Terry with some modal or bamboo makes excellent cardigans also!

I'm 68, I've always knitted for myself and my family sewed a bit in the past too for my girls and I but when they moved out I perused my career I retired at 63 and first thing husband done unknown to me during my final week working was to transform our smallest bedroom into a craft room for me. I love cardmaking etc. I already owned an antique singer hand crank machine he bought me when we first married after seeing my reactions to it at a flea market. I also owned a state of the art electric machine
I was in town with my friends for lunch one day and when I got home he took me into craft room and there sitting under the window is an old singer treadle machine I'd always wanted one as I had learned to see using my great aunts treadle machine.
I see costumes for church productions etc.
My electric machine has found a new home with my daughter and I'm loving using my new treasure.
I'm planning when the lockdown ends here to begin to make myself something simple like this so go for it not only will you have something that was made by you but that fits you as you want.

“I’m a good distraction!” (So sweet!) What pretty dresses! And personally when I was pregnant I didn’t enjoy clothes that felt too tight so they look so comfy to me, having some space! 😊 This did inspire me to get back to sewing, I usually have to kinda be in the mood. I make most of my dresses and some for my daughters as well. And I need to get to teaching my oldest daughter more about sewing! What a cute space you have to sew in! Thanks for the inspiration! 🧡 ...also, I learned a new thing watching you, how you snipped the fabric to know where the middle is! I usually put a pin in but this feels easier!

And another way to make it nursing friendly with a double bodice is to cut a slit in the under bodice piece and have just the bottom layer attached to the skirt. That way you can lift the top piece up and pull the lining piece down to nurse

I tend to make curry without bought sauces as too much fat/ salt in them. Tin of tomatoes, 2 tbsp curry powder and chopped onions are my base, then we add extra veggies like courgettes (zucchini), mushrooms or green beans. A swirl of natural yoghurt if you like it a little creamy, at the end.

  • @lifethroughhereyes3958
    @lifethroughhereyes3958 3 года назад +1

    Loved it!
    2 quick tips:
    1. try to go for a skirt with an upper measurement of 1.4 times the waist measurement of the bodice. It gives gathers, but not crazy pouf!
    2. Use iron on seam tape to make sure that very stretchy fabrics don’t lose their shape. (If you don’t want the boat neck, for instance) iron it along the line you don’t want to stretch, and then do the stitching through the tape and the 2 layers of fabric, like normal.
I will be off looking at fabric now🙋🏻‍♀️😉

You need to stay stitch the necklines with a smallish stitch just inside the seam line to stop them stretching out, which is what has happened. Also handle as little as possible until the stay stitching is done.
You could also understitch the inner bodice neckline which will also stop it stretching out.

:) I stumbled on your channel not long ago and really enjoy your positive and encouraging outlook--you're helping me transition to a stay-at-home mum. Anyway, I'm settling into this new role and trying to be the best momma I can. Also, I think your hubby left a couple sawdust bits in your hair when he hugged you (lol cute.)

I learned that if you don't gather the skirt on the sides (just in the the front and back) you don't get that 'poofy' look! Worth a try!

My granny - great grandmother use to make a lot of my dresses as a girl and she use to do jut girl shirts or tank tops and sew a skirt on the bottom just fabric from the store-and they were so cute and practical

Love the dresses you made! I sew too but mostly for my kids (hence my channel name). You're right though that is so nice to have a creative outlet to break up the monotony of regular Mum life. Even though it's such a blessing to be home with our kids, sometimes it's necessary for Mum to be the focus

I once made matching Easter dresses for my little girls and a jumper for my youngest. My mom was a professional seamstress and couldn't believe her eyes. I couldn't believe my eyes either! After that, I made curtains for our home (and drapes once). In my 40's I learned to make quilts. Now, I'm into making greeting cards and journals. Cute dresses, Megan. My fav is the black/white dress. But, both are cute. Yes! make a matching dress for Evonnie.

These dresses are beautiful! I'm realizing that so many maternity dresses have low cut necklines or are so short (well above the knee). I would LOVE to make my own so i know it's exactly what I'm looking for, but I'm not quite brave enough yet...This video has helped me see that it's possible and so much less expensive than going to a store any buying a dress! Thank you!! Also, great idea to make it nursing friendly. I'm WAAAAAY far away from being able to even consider putting a zipper in anything, but it's so smart!!

Just stumbled across your channel and how refreshing! You took me back many years to my days of sewing on my dining room table with littles running around playing under the table. I loved to make simple dresses similar to yours and prided myself in making one "in a day" to wear to an event in the evening. I am in a much different season of my life but will continue to tune in from time to time.

I love to sew but haven't really had the time til I retired. Now our guest room serves double duty as guest / sewing room.I'd love to get a murphy bed for in there so I'd have more space when we don't have guests. Now it is pretty cramped.

Instead of adding invisible zippers for nursing, you could just make the same dress with the waistline being able to pull up and some fabric underneath it that you can pull aside (like a lot of nursing tops out there). I find that that’s easier to sew.

Those two dresses came out so cute. I’d love to wear either one of them. I love knits. I’m not sewing clothes much these days. I started quilting and am in the process of making quilts for all of my 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. So far I’ve done finished quilts for 5 of the grandkids and 1 great grandson. I’m getting ready to start the quilt for the great granddaughter hopefully before her baby shower. Then I will just have 6 more to go!
