    Your pov climbing footage is so great.. I honestly get sweaty palms watching this. It's awesome how you get this feeling across the screen.

    Ah, so THIS is the actual use-case of monkey fists! I got here through a climber friend who posted this in our discord; I'm normally over in the martial arts side of youtube and saw people talking about their merits as self-defense tools, and I remember wondering what the heck the purpose of it was, or if it was just some weird self-defense tool fad someone thought up.

    It's basically a free solo at the start and finish.That monkeyfist may have hold your weight on a fall, but the swing from the rope being all around the tree plus the 6-10m? of falling would've slingshotted you into the canopy haha! Very impressive climb on the mental side. Leadclimbing trees seems like fun :)

    Hey Noah, love the videos they’re (imo) the best climbing videos on yt. I was wondering if you could share some info on making anchors? Even just a link to a site or video is much appreciated. Thank you so much, love the content, keep it up!

  • @PlutoniumDG
    @PlutoniumDG 3 месяца назад

    Wow, didn't expect the monkey fist to be your final protection of the route (except of the top anchor, of course)

  • @Antmandominguez
    @Antmandominguez 3 месяца назад

    How do you rappel down at the end? Do you leave a permanent anchor up there or do you just rappel off a strong branch/fork and pull the rope through?

    • @ZerolinGD
      @ZerolinGD 3 месяца назад

      i imagine he leaves an anchor, or sometimes ive seen him downclimb. rappeling straight off the tree would definitely violate his ethics.

      He explained in another video that what he's climbing in the videos is the hardest side of the tree and there's usually something much easier to climb on the other side.

      prolly ascend a static rope up to the canopy and then place the anchor.

    have you considered do a basket hitch instead of a girth hitch around the limbs? I know that a basket would slide more but are there any concerns about how girth hitches reduce the strength of the slings.

    Sandstone climbers usually prefer figure 8 knots and would probably take a bigger diameter rope.
    You can even use three or four strands of the rope to make the slings bigger, probably safer than the monkey fist.
    The monkey fists can compress more than other knots under high forces.

    • @sportenapfeltorten2095
      @sportenapfeltorten2095 3 месяца назад

      Maybe he put something incompressible inside.
      On the sandstone its illegal but on the trees the only restriction is not hurting the tree.
      Right?

    • @RuinerWonkel
      @RuinerWonkel 3 месяца назад

      @@sportenapfeltorten2095 I mean yeah, that's true. But also hard things inside are a safety hazard. Stones or stuff for example could break and crumble under pressure and make the knot pointless. It probably holds, but a figure 8 could be better. Funny enough that the example of the sandstone climber he shows uses a figure 8 knot sling and not a monkey fist.

      You are surely right!
      In the vid by HowNotTo the sandstone climber they interwiew also says they barely use monkey fists, even though they are the ones most people know about.
      :o)

    Why not put a locker on the monkey fist sling? While unclipping is highly unlikely on soft webbing/rope, it feels out-of-textbook climbing to put your life on a single non locking carabiner.

    Theres really no reason not to sling the "dead branch" as well as have the monkey fist. Look at british bold climbing, they are not afraid to place many shit pieces to catch a large fall and neither should you be.

    An incredibly difficult knot to create...in my opinion. I totally suck at knots!
    And sadly my family on my paternal grandfathers side were all swedish fisherman.
    Somehow, knots totally skipped my generation. 🤦‍♀️
