The Shocking Truth About Recovery From Bipolar Disorder

  • www.bipolaradvantage.com The current standard of care as defined by the National Institute of Mental Health is to minimize symptoms and accept the high probability of relapse. While many tools have been developed to effectively manage bipolar disorder, there are far too many people who are still living on the edge of relapse and suffering greatly from it. Even for those who achieve a level of remission that is commonly called recovery, they live in constant fear that one sleepless night can send them into another crisis.
Trapped in a vicious cycle of Crisis, Managed, Recovery, and Relapse is the very definition of bipolar disorder and its depressive counterpart unipolar disorder. Even in Recovery, the illness is lurking behind every thought, waiting for the slightest chance to trigger a new episode. It consigns its victims to a lifetime of fear and constant vigilance in an attempt to keep the flow of energy and information at bay.
It is interesting that so many people have a different word than "recovery" for the state where we are limited to the comfort zone of no high or low symptoms. They do not call it "recovery," they call it "bored." It is one of the major reasons that they slip back into the Managed Stage and risk another Crisis. This is why the National Institute of Mental Health says, "in spite of modern, evidence-based treatment, bipolar disorder remains a highly recurrent, predominantly depressive illness."

I used to think that I could "Ride Out" my highs and lows and make the most of them (especially getting things done when I felt good that I could not do when I felt depressed). But over time I came to accept that I was not in full control when I was hyper or manic and that I was not in control when I was overwhelmed with Anxiety and Depression. So I learned to avoid things that bothered me and I learned to avoid things that made me hyper or manic. Now I avoid everything and wonder why I am here.

I've been using a journal to record my thoughts over the long term. Being able to see a month long manic episode plainly in front of you and in your own words is a powerful tool. Its helped me reflect and recognize my limitations, which has helped me curb the outbusts and focus on the more important things. Its also helpful because it lets me unload the stress and confusion that comes with the episodes and I can look back to when I was doing alright and remind myself that it will pass.

My goal is to get from recovery to manage at will... The manage area is by far the biggest advantage of bipolar and make a regular human into a super human...
One day I felt myself going from manage to crisis and I decided to challenge it, I told myself there is no way I will be in crisis. I manage to stayed in that manage stage for a while and what I was able to do as a human being was simply unbelievable...
In that time I've lived the famous quote from Churchill... I was able to see all my past and see what my future would be like and what action I could take to alter my future into the way I wanted to be... The perfect simulation computer where my input in the present showed how it would be like 40yrs from now...
I don't care how powerful a computer is they are no were close to that level of simulation yet...

It is MY brain and I wouldn't want to take away the disorders i have had because they have made me the strong person I am today and I am proud of the person I am becoming.

@AquaCarb We can define flying as the same as swimming too, but the official definition as set by the National Institute of Mental Health is what is in the video. One of the problems with the recovery movement is that they promote the idea that recovery is whatever anyone says it is. With such a definition we have people claiming to be "in recovery" while in the middle of a crisis. Nonetheless, I have never heard anyone claim recovery does not include symptom reduction.

No no no no no... If you are so recovered, you are alot safer than 1 night away from a crisis... It might take several weeks of poor sleep and very high stress.. I do not agree. Knowledge and skills development lead to expertise in resilience. No no no 1 bad night's sleep, that's a load of garbage.

I thought I should share this. It might help you. What people don't realize is conditions like Bipolar, Schizophrenia, etc. can be caused by reaction to certain foods.
I had a friend of mine who had bipolar disorder. But his bipolar disorder was caused by Dairy and Gluten (Wheat, Rye, Barley, etc.). Corn gluten can also be dangerous as well.
When he stopped both, he became a lot better. For example, check youtube video "The Milk Protein Casein and Bipolar Disorder" by Dr. David J. Clark.
There is also a youtube video by Dr. David Clark called "Cheese causes seizures" on how seizure was gone after dairy was eliminated.
Check youtube video "What Dairy Industry Doesn't want you to know - Neal Barnard MD- Full Talk" which will give further details on the deception behind the promotion of dairy.

At first I thought this would be another manic bipolar person trying to tell everyone that psychiatry was conspiracy against the mentally advanced. He actually ended up explaining how it feels to be bipolar really well.

This guy talks as if he has see through my eyes. I hate my bp. Until I die I will be bp. I never know when mania will hit. I've made it 20 of suicidal dreams. I hate you bp, you took everything good, my ship has been shored with many holes of disbelievers of mental health disorders. Can't see it, it isn't there. Right?

I think this presentation is unfortunate. Living with bipolar disorder and working with students with it I can tell you we all don't live in constant fear of relapse. People carve out their own recovery, yes with the reality of knowing that symptoms often come back but these experiences and the anticipation of them can be synthesized into a recovery perspective in lots of ways. I guess I want to talk up people's native capacity to get better and make sense of their lives with our without....

Ben W If it's a rare occurrence, it's probably a psychotic episode or break. Bi-Polar disorder is physiological. It's like having a broken speed regulator in your car, due, at least in part, due to a broken K+ (potassium) channel. It can "go silent" for awhile, but otherwise it's a fairly high frequency thing. Diseases caused by channelopathies do not autocorrect overnight, nor can you talk or think them better. Although some suspect that a long term ketogenic diet may heal it, similar to how it heals epileptics. But that, in itself, is a long road (8+ years). I firmly believe in people's native capacity to get better, too, but with particular disorder you'd need to be quite good at reading & implementing scientific studies, and potentially doing your own n=1 self experiments. Not as hard as trying to do heart surgery on yourself, but not as simple as washing & dressing a wound. I'd be highly concerned that someone prone to mania would think themselves healed when they are not, since delusional thinking is such a pronounced feature.

No one asked for your opinion; and although everyone has an opinion (kind of like everyone has an asshole), intelligent socially acceptable humans know when to publicize or show it and when not to! Also, "nuts" are a type of food. It is usually considered rude, crude, and inappropriate to use "nuts" as an adjective describing another person!
