01 | Winter Cottage Life in the Swedish Forests | Ice Skating on a Big Frozen Lake

- Hi everyone, my name is Elcke and together with my two loved ones I moved from the Netherlands to the beautiful south of Sweden, which is called Småland. By buying a 19th century cottage (a soldattorpet) in the middle of the Swedish forest we made the decision to live a bit more slow and more in line with nature.
In this video I will take you with me when I go ice skating, explore the woods around our cottage, cook on a wood stove and have dinner by the campfire underneath the stars. I will basically show you the winter cottage life in Småland, Sweden and hopefully give you a moment to sit back and relax.
Since this is my first video on RUclips I hope you will be a bit easy on me. Because I like how this video came together I will definitely upload another one soon. Please feel free to add comments or suggestions in the comment section down below. If you have any questions I will be happy to answer those as well.

FOOD
Butternut Pumpkin Soup (Ingredients):
1 butternut squash (pumpkin)
1 sweet potato
1 onion
3 carrots
3 garlic
2 teaspoons of mixed herbs: basil, parsley & oregano
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 liter of water
1,5 spoon of coconut-oil
Some pine nuts
Melt coconut oil in a deep pan and add onion, garlic, salt and pepper. Fry until golden and add the chopped vegetables. Wait a bit for it to cook.
Then pour in the water and simmer until the vegetables becomes tender. When the vegetables are soft you can blend everything. Add some pine nuts for the finishing touch.

I lived in Småland (in Växjö) for a few years, it is a very pretty province and one can often get a real winter there too unlike near the coastline where weather is much milder.
Someday, I would like to visit the Netherlands too. Ik spreek maar een beetje nederlands :)

So nice you lived in Småland and now the province. We live an hour from Växjö and it is really a beautiful over here. The rocks, trees and lakes makes everything magical. I hope more people are going to love this kind of living. It’s is materialistic simpleness, but rich in love from nature.

@@elckeinwonderland In het nederlands is prima hoor, ik ben Amerikaan maar woondde in Amsterdam vier jaren, in de laat jaren negentig. Ik dacht eerst dat jij Zweeds was. Dan zag in een van jouw videos een klein paar klompjes op jouw keychain en ik dacht “er is iets aan de hand hier!” Ik vind het OK te praten maar schrijven is een stuk moeilijker. Nu ga ik want ik, mijn man, en onze drie tieners zijn op een college tour op Eastern Carolina University. Doei!

Leuk eh het schaatsen, ik heb deze schaatsen in een zweeds tweedehandswinkel gekocht. We hebben geen familie in Zweden. We zijn 8 jaar geleden op vakantie geweest in dit land en sindsdien hebben we de wens gehad om hier een leven op te bouwen 🇸🇪 De zweedse taal beheersen we nog niet heel goed, maar beetje bij beetje komen we er wel. Je schrijft de woorden heel anders dan de uitspraak, dus je moet de taal 2x leren in feite, wat het soms wel ingewikkeld maakt met klinkers als ö, ä, å 😅 hihi.
I love your videos! How do you know when the ice is thick enough to skate on?
Thank you, that’s so nice. You can hear the ice cracking when it’s not thick enough when you stand on it and the texture becomes different when it’s good to skate on. Have you ever been ice skating?
@@elckeinwonderland I live in the desert in the U.S. so I have never lived where there is enough ice to skate. I love the cold weather and would love to live in a place where there are real seasons.
@@cherryberry2423 Ahh yes, i can understand that you’ve never had the change to ice skate in such warm climate 😅. Hopefully in the future you can go somewhere on a holiday or maybe live in another place with four seasons to experience this ⛸ That would be awesome 😁
