Great video, I regularly went into Saddams Palace in Basra in 2003 during the Iraq war. It was absolutely beautiful, one of the most amazing places I've ever seen. Maybe I'll go back there one day. Dean, Travelling Veteran.
@@thomaspick4123 Well said squire. They could be making millions if they’d spruced up the palace and charged a small entry fee. As for as Saddam, although he was a tyrant, he was the tyrant that to a degree, was needed.
Iraq sits on top of more than 140 billion barrels of oil, making it the owner of the world’s fourth largest reserves. When the United States invaded in 2003, the Bush Administration promised that oil revenue-according to one report, totaling some $700 billion since the invasion, accounting for at least 80 percent of the Iraqi government budget-would be used to win the war and to rebuild and democratize the country. But fifteen years later, those dreams have been shattered. The economy has flat-lined, millions of people are internally displaced, and institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank have had to provide billions of dollars to the country every year. Where did all the oil revenue go?
In the same breath If you ask majority of the Iraqi’s and Kurds they will tell you life was better under Saddam’s regime. By letting the west invade the locals sold their soul to the devil and now live to regret it.
I was born in BABILON in 1963 , we left IRAQ 🇮🇶 in 1970 went to LEBANON 🇱🇧 and lived there for 2 years until it was time to move to the USA 🇺🇸, it’s a damn shame for anyone in this world to leave their own country,
There’s too many single men from these places invading Europe US Canada etc and bringing a backward mentality with them.I live in Ireland and we have problems with them.
Amazing place... seems so sparce now.... when you went through the door and up the stairs, the area I wanted to know more about was behind that wire and up the passge next to the stairs. Perhaps a basement or rooms many really didnt get to see. Was good you got to go upsatairs though.
Really fascinating. I'd of liked a look roon the Palace in its heyday. In a way its good the locals wreaked the place to show their disgust at the man. Good stuff Callum 👏
fantastic mate, thank you for posting. I was impressed with the ground floor work but to get into the upper floors and see that amazing view, brilliant. Thanks again and yes I've liked and subscribed. Nice one
We used the one (Palace mansion) in Mosul as the HQ for the 101st ABN division. One day a guy came in to meet with Gen Petreus to inform him of Sadams two sons.
Why Don't they (The Iraq Government) Clean and renovate this national property and use it as a holiday resort to generate income for the local area or convert it to a university, Hospital, School or any thing that will benefit the Iraq people 🤔
Amazing series of Iraq content so far, loved Babylon and Saddams Palace seen a few recent vlogs from there but yours so far has covered so much more!! Oh canny take the boy outta Airdrie cutting about wae a JD bag 😂
The Sumerians were before the Babylonians, they were the first to brew beer, Mathematics, Astronomy, the alphabet, etc, good stuff Callum, new sub here. Fascinating. Happy trails!
Great video. Eighty dollars a night for your hotel room actually seems like a real. I’ve seen rooms and surroundings less impressive and much more costly. Going to have to check out more of your vids.
What a great place to visit looks like you had a good time I enjoyed looking round Sadam's palace something I might not have seen whiteout tagging along on your holiday .. I must say I was worried about your safety with that copper following you about but your ok got away without a problem. . well done
Callum - your channel keeps growing! Congrats to you. I remember your first few videos way back with Ben. Hope you two still are friends & one day soon will hook up again for a collaboration
I don't know why RUclips recommended this to me, probably all the architecture videos I've watched, but I totally wasn't expecting a Glaswegian accent.
What is it now, a museum open to the public? It’s the first time I’ve seen so many local Iraqis inside. It was great to hear children laughing and being happy and playful. Maybe getting rid of Saddam was a good thing. Although many Iraqis say not so.
Lots of people visit the ground floor. Some of the graffiti upstairs is original from the soldiers who stormed the place. It’s a beautiful building. Thanks for checking out the video 🤜🏻🤛🏻
How did it get wrecked and graffitied? Like the hand rails up stairs and the walls? Was that during the war or just some vandalism? Great video as always, ur living the dream, trips look amazing!
I’ve been wanting to visit Iraq and experience their culture and see all the amazing places, architecture, food, people, language ect. Is it dangerous as an American?
A guy I used to work with was recently kidnapped and held for random in Iraq , the ransom was paid , but my friend said he was raped daily , he now has to wear a diaper for the rest of his life , he's only 27 years old
Where is all the bomb damage? I was under the impression that the Palace was blown to dust! I didn't even see any bullet holes in the walls.. Maybe I missed something!

Regardless of who it belonged to, I think it’s a shame that people have graffitied all over what is a beautiful palace.
He was a bastard it should be destroyed.

All stolen!! Remember bush saying “ it’s gonna take certain amounts to rebuild Iraq” total lies, deceived the Iraqis
USA took it
@Karl von Bahnhof My sympathy is only for those who found that warm machine invading them. Vets knew they were fighting for Bush family
Even Michael Palin never got upstairs for his documentary 😉
Wow the whole view of the ancient city of Babylon 😮
The security guard was definitely paid out, wish you would have showed more 😊
It’s almost like he’s built it as it would have been in the biblical times , how amazing to see the site of Babylon great video 👌👌👌

Is that the palace where the invaders stole the truck loads of Gold?
The Man sure did keep the Middle East in check.
Is this his Tikrit palace? How much did the extra tour cost? Lol I love that they are dealing with recovering from war pretty well! 🙂
Its the one in Babylon west of Baghdad
How do you finance you travels
That hotel I thought was expensive
They built the palaces and other special regime sites close to historical sites to protect them
I was there in 2006, I did not leave anything, so there is no reason to return.

Scottish accent 😎 similar to Irish tho
Graffiti and the people robbing expensive souvenirs pretty much destroyed the palace. But again it happens every were you go.
I was there Easter Sunday 2004 when it fell to the 101 air borne, Sadam stayed there 1 time then killed the architect because it was two small
I was right there in 2004. the polish soldiers were in that palace, place was a dump then, still looks like a dump.
Quality wee man
There is secret rooms with cash watch guns etc in that palace
Like or not Middle East needed a character like Sadam keep the peace.
Wush theyd repair it and turn it into a government building people could fully tour and enjoy
You see you have to have a Scottish accent to get anywhere these days. ❤️🇬🇧
Decades later and it is still standing. Very American style hotel.

Beautiful!!
Was this place built off the backs of his people??
Great video mate

A bit like Paisley if its not loccked doon it will get stolen.
