    In this video we'll explore Saddam Hussein's abandoned palace that overlooks the ancient city of Babylon. Saddam had an entire 175 year old town destroyed in order to make room for a palace for himself. He never visited the completed palace.
    After we check out the palace we're off to Hillah, Iraq - the modern day town of Babylon, where we'll have a massive Iraqi feast for lunch!

    So glad I came across your videos of Iraq! I have been binge watching them lol. You are showing what Iraq is truly like and not like how the media shows it. I suggest for your next visit to Iraq, you should definitely visit the north side. There's way more beautiful views like mountains and waterfalls and a lot more hospitality. 💙

    Saddam Hussein built more than he destroyed, and the life was safer in his regime than today.
    I’m not defending him, he wasn’t perfect, but at least he loved Iraq and protected us from the Iranian poisons.
    Bro, I can talk until tomorrow about this topic, because I have researched a lot about my own homeland.
    Anyways, I love your videos and the way you react about things. All luck to you brother!

      You missed my point about mentioning ‘Quran and Hadith’. I mean, if you wanna be professional, you don’t assume that I’m muslim like you. You get it? Because I don’t care about your religion, as you also don’t care about other’s religions. Respect is what is needed.
      You care about which religion allows me to decide others future after death. I say what I believe or think is right. It has nothing to do with religion.

    This video popped up as something the algorithm thought I would enjoy watching. I was in Al Hilla from June to September 2003. I toured the Ruins of Babylon, walked thru the labyrinth, ate the local food and engaged with the locals. We would spend hours at a time, on our days off, near the palace or eating along the river. I was even stitched up there by one of our medics. Of the several places I had stayed in Iraq, Hilla was my favorite. I always felt safest there. It sure looks like a lot has changed, and changed for the better. It's nice to see what it has become rather than how I remember it when we left the area.

    Doug, what you tried after lunch towards the end of your video was a mix of frankincense and myrrh tree resins.
    In Arabic: علك اللبان أو علكة المر.
    Would’ve tasted very bitter - numerous health benefits.
    What Hussein would’ve had was acacia tree gum (commonly known as water gum).
    In Arabic: علك الماء.
    Again, many health benefits. And pretty much is tasteless like Hussein mentioned. It sort of serves as a dry mouth treatment - saliva substitute. Does almost disable your jaw after a while of chewing it though haha - gets too hard but you still wouldn’t want to chuck it. Quite addictive in a good way, as anyone who has tried it would know.
    You two were just talking about two different gums.
    P.S. Thoroughly enjoyed this series. Kudos to you.

    I love your videos a lot because you show the positive thing in Iraq, unlike some people that only show negative things, especially in Iraq.. A while ago I watched a video on Tik Tok and it was asking Do we have streets? Do we have homes?? They think we live in a desert! All this misinformation is because of the news because they only look at negative things!! Welcome to Iraq. We welcome everyone, love everyone, and help everyone without exception! Thank you very much for showing Iraq beautifully, I wish you good times .
    I LOVE YOU 🦋💕

    Dear Doug the one you’ve tried at counter is not chewy gum or watery gum as they said to you it’s incense the usually use it in churches for a mass . And back in old time as our nations people specially Christian Assyrian of iraq they used use it when someone had tooth pain or a hole damage they used put this incense to fill the hole and to anesthetize the tooth

    @Doug what you had at min 15 which your guide called water gum was actually frankincense (Gum Arabica) its a natural plant product used widely in Iraq and the Mid east…nothing artificial at all. And we call it bitter gum علك مر the water gum one is more chewy and not as bitter. Also i know it tastes bad but honestly if you have an upset stomach or IBS after chewing it you will feel so much better. Thats why people chew it in iraq after food to help with any stomach issues they might get

    CORRECTION - none of the “Saddam palaces” were owned none deeded to himself or his family, they all each and every one belonged, registered and deeded to the people of Iraq meaning NO ONE owned anything, depending on location, all were the property of municipality belonged to the Iraqi people period. T he equivalent of a national monument.
    The man claims 120 houses were levelled to build the palace ! Did you see a street, an electoral outlet, a shop, a bus station, a water pipe, a shop, electrical poles, remnants of where a house once stood, a road way a mosque, a coffee house these are essentials for a city of 120 households , there must be a remnant somewhere right, nothing noticed. I mean 120 homes with a 120 families surely would’ve required some roadway at a minimum. Rest assured no one can produce a document, a registration or a deed of a single dwelling , I mean Babylon ,ur, other ancient cities some built over 5000 yrs ago and remnants can still be seen here and now !
    Truth of the matter is there were only a few “mud huts” inhabited by the “marsh people” that were built on a land not belonging to them is the moral of the story. Iraq is a thousand times worse than it ever has been, drug use and abuse, alcoholism, prostitution, pedos,, kidnappings, rapes, assaults, murders on daily make that hourly basis, theft, pick pockets and I’ve barely scratched the surface none of which existed when Saddam ruled, in all honesty I’m not in defense of him
    Iraq is ruled by several armed militias backed by Iran, Iraq has never been poorer, illiterate, piss poor health care system, hungrier, immoral, lack of adequate housing and CORRUPTION ! at each and every level taking down once a sovereign and prosperous country into oblivion!
    Dude, I enjoy ur content, but pleeeez analyze things from all sides not just one sided view and form an opinion and post incomplete or inaccurate and biased sources,scratch the surface a bit and the truth is way way different. I feel you were mesmerized by the locals friendliness, hospitality so ur opinion may sway causing false info, I realize ur a vlogger and not a professional journalist and therefore can’t hold you to higher standards while some integrity should be practiced. everything is IMHO ✌️

    • @doug_barnard
      @doug_barnard  2 года назад

      that is a silly semantic that they "belonged to the people". saddam WAS the state back then. hence why he had his face and initials carved all over the building? if they were truly built for the people of iraq and not for one dictator, they would have carved images of iraqi heritage on them instead of images of a dictator's face.

    • @doug_barnard
      @doug_barnard  2 года назад

      of course there are no remnants of the village that was destroyed, because a hill was built on the site and then this palace on top of that hill. and even if they were "mud huts" i don't think that in any way justifies the people being kicked out in order to build some dictator's palace. they were still people's homes.
      and to your last point, i'm not trying to come across as one sided. obviously the US invasion caused immense destruction in iraq, the rise of ISIS, etc. but that does not make saddam good or minimize the evils of saddam
